Betsey Wood and Nathaniel Nichols* had the following children:

    +  2  i.  Polly A.2 Nichols was born 22 MAR 1814.
3  ii.  Sally Mariah Nichols (#74399) was born 1823.  Listed as age 10 on the 1833 list of the township Poor Children.
+  4  iii.  Prudence or Zilpha Nichols was born 1825.
5  iv.  Clymena Nichols (#61923) was born 1826 to 30.

 Second Generation

  2.  Polly A.2 Nichols (Betsey1 Wood) (#251) was born in Connecticut 22 MAR 1814.   Individual flags: Bible.  Polly died 13 APR 1893 at age 79.  Her body was interred APR 1893 in Wood Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

She married Jesse Smith BEF 1832.  (Jesse Smith is #7495.)  Jesse was born 08 FEB 1813 in New York.   Jesse was the son of Silas B. Smith and Milly Wood.  Jesse died 11 APR 1870 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 57.  His body was interred APR 1870 in Wood Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Jesse registered to pay taxes 1833 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   21 wild acres, 1 cow.  Jesse registered to pay taxes 1835 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   4 acres improved land, 67 acres wild land, 1 cow, aluaton $74.00

Jesse was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Polly and Jesse lived next door to her grandparents Jonathan and Elizabeth WOOD, also near her parents Betsey WOOD and Nathan NICHOLS. They had one female and one male under five, and two females 5-10 in their household.

In the Census of 1850, Jesse was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Silas and Milly have one male under five in 1820 census which is close, but not a perfect match, only two years difference if the date I have for Jesse is correct. If Silas and Milly were his parents then he would be cousin to his wife. This would not have been unusual or taboo at that time. In the 1830 census Silas and Milly's boy is between 15 and 20 which would fit the given birthdate of Jesse. It is NOT proven that Jesse is son of Silas and Milly. Children named Julia and Lucinda are also the names of possible sisters which adds evidence to this hypothesis. Identity of this woman from Burr Wood writeup in Presidents Soldiers Statesmen. She and her husband lived next door to her parents, Betsey and Nathaniel, in 1850.  Her family Bible records the birth of her seven children, the death of some, the birth and death of her parents, and the birth and death of herself and her husband. While the Bible gives her parents, it does not, unfortunately, tell us who Jessie's were.

Polly A. Nichols and Jesse Smith had the following children:

    +  6  i.  Hannah W.3 Smith was born 03 AUG 1832.
+  7  ii.  Julia Smith was born 3 JAN 1834.

Smith (#434) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 05 JAN 1839.   Individual flags: Civil War.  Samuel died 31 JUL 1863 in Andersonville Prison, Civil War Prison, Andersonville, Georgia, at age 24.  His body was interred 1863 in Wood Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Co B 101st Regiment Pa. Volunteers died at Andersonville Prison
    +  10  v.  Betsey M. Smith was born 20 MAY 1841.

    +  12  vii.  George W. Smith was born 23 SEP 1852.
    +  13  viii.  Mary A. Smith was born 21 FEB 1855.

  4.  Prudence or Zilpha2 Nichols (Betsey1 Wood) (#11817) was born in Pennsylvania 1825.

She married Darwin Harding BEF 1860.  (Darwin Harding is #11815.)  Darwin was born 6 DEC 1824 in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Darwin   was the son of Joseph M. Harding and Permelia Meletiah Hayden.  He married Lucinda Smith 1855.  Need confirmation that Prudence is actually daughter of Betsey and Nathaniel. A girl her age is present in 1840 census. She is listed as Zylpha, age 8, in the 1833 list of Poor Children in the township on the tax roll.

Prudence or Zilpha Nichols and Darwin Harding had the following children:

This would be the same neighborhood, on the Sullivan-Rutland border, in which Julia lived.
