1833-1983 South Creek Sesquicentennial
Reprinted on Tri-Counties site with permission of June SMITH
Mickley
ReTyped by Paul Newell
Although South Creek was inhabited sometime prior to the turn of the nineteenth century (Its first permanent settler of note being Jesse Moore in 1804) the major influx of settlers into the township occurred during the 1830’s. The first recognized settler was Deacon Asa Gillette, after whom the village of Gillett was named. The year 1833 is fixed as his arrival into the area. It is in remembrance of that beginning that 1983 has been chosen as a commemorative year for the celebration of the Sesquicentennial of the founding of settlement in the South Creek area. It is worthy of mention that Philo Fassett emigrated to the area in 1834 and Eben Dunning started lumbering here in 1837; so proximity in time and place have inspired both the festivities and this book.
Credit should be given where it is due and therefore the creative and dedicated efforts of June Mickley and Collette Roberts merit special note. Without their persistent nurturant care the book would have died in infancy. This is not to diminish the contribution of Edward P. Ballard, who was both resourceful and judicious in contributing his effort and advice; and in procuring the township’s financial support. Nor do we wish to overlook the assistance of Jennie Culver. And thanks to Barbara Spotts for her typing of most of the copy.
As for myself, I found that working on this project was an experience that was both challenging and rewarding. Best of all, I acquired a feeling for the heart of this community which expressed itself as people caring for and sharing with each other. It was pleasantly surprising to see people freely giving of their time, resources, and monies to make this project work. This was truly a town effort.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed time and resources. We only wish we had the space to incorporate it all. Materials were selected to remain as comprehensive and impartial as possible. If we overlooked something or slighted anyone it was unintentional and we’re sorry. We hope that you enjoy the book; we enjoyed making it.
