Temperance NILES born in Connecticut in 1796, daughter of Russell NILES and Irena RUSSELL, died after 1870, probably in Rutland Township. She married Tiimothy BRACE 12 MAR 1814. She is buried in the Lawrence Corners Cemetery in Rutland Township. This photo was photographed in the 1960s by Edward SMITH and stored as a slide. His son, Dave SMITH of Dryden NY, recently found the boxes of his father's slides and brought them to me. I projected this on screen and photographed it with a digital camera. Temperance is the one with the dominant genes in this pair. Those of us who have lived in the eastern Tioga County area know many people living today who look very much like their ancestor, Temperance.
Lydia ORVIS was born 20 MAR 1764 in Norfolk, Connecticut, daughter of Hannah NORTH and Eleazar ORVIS. In March 1788 she married Russell ROSE as his second wife. His first wife had been her sister Phoebe ORVIS who died in 1786. In 1807 Lydia and Russell moved their family to Sullivan Township where they lived out their lives. She died 3 JUN 1857 and she is buried in the State Road Cemetery. Martha BELL Orkins of Ohio sent this photograph, probably of a painting of Lydia.
Hannah PEET - Born in 1772, Hannah PEET married Benoni WATKINS before 1795. She was the mother of Betsey, Sally, Delighta, Grandason, Abel, Daniel, and Nicholas. Her descendants still live in great number in the Tioga / Bradford county area where she was a pioneer settler. She died after October 1850 probably in Rutland Township - Possibly even in the house where I obtained this photo on November 1998. - a house built by her son Grandason.
Rebecca ROSE was born in Litchfield, Connecticut 11 OCT 1795, daughter of Lydia ORVIS and Russell ROSE. In 1807 she migrated to Sullivan Township with her parents and siblings. On 30 JUN 1814, she married John PACKARD and they farmed in Sullivan. He die din 1842, leaving Rebecca with a family of eleven children which she raised alone. She died May 1901 in Covington at the age of 105. She is buried in the Mainesburg Cemetery in Sullivan Township. It is notable that she lived in three centuries. Martha BELL Orkins of Ohio provided this photo.
