Title:
Betsy Ross House
Description:
Betsy Ross House Philadelphia, Pa. 1700
WPA District 15 on shield.
Title located on the top of the base.
The Betsy Ross House is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The house was built over 250 years ago and was actually a two-part build. The front of the house was built around 1740 and the rear section along with the stair hall was added to the foundation 10 to 20 years after the front's completion. The structure of the house is a type of "bandbox" style house. This type of house has one room per floor with a winding staircase from the highest level of the house to the cellar. The house has an ideal layout for businesses. The Betsy Ross House served as a place of business and it was also the residents of many skilled craftsman like shoemakers for more than 150 years.
In the many years of constantly changing residents, it is believed that Betsy Ross lived in the house from 1776 to 1779. After Ross, German immigrants lived in the house and ran various businesses out of it like a tailor shop, cigar store, and even a tavern. In 1876, the house was recognized as the living place of Betsy Ross and also the place where the first flag of the United States was made. Around the start of the twentieth century, the American Flag House and Betsy Ross Memorial Association was established to safe the house from being torn down like what had happened to most of the colonial houses in the surrounding area. After much fundraising and restoration work, the house became a historical landmark and museum in 1937 and has been supported and funded as one ever since.
