Title:
Viterbo 12th C. Unknown Romanesque House
Description:
Unknown Romanesque House from 12th Century Viterbo, Italy
Title located on front of base "ian Romanesque" (possible Italian Romanesque) - corner chip has removed part of the name.
12th C. and Viterbo located on back and side of base.

This Romanesque building in which the title is unknown since there is a corner of the inscription lost to us with only "___ian Romanesque" visible, is a building in Viterbo, Italy known as the Palazzo Degli Alessandri or Palazzo of Alessandri in the Piazza San Pellegrino. Possibly titled the "Italian Romanesque", it was built in the 12-13th century which was known for being a great time of expansion for the area. Only a few years after its construction, it was threatened to be torn down after abandonment by the Alessandri and Gatti family because they were part of the Guelph, a faction in Medieval times that supported the Pope against the Holy Roman Emperor.
This medieval structure went through several restorations during the last century including the removal of the static plaster that covered the building's facade. Other alterations were made to the building as well like the removal of bricks that closed the first floor windows. This restoration was done in 1908 along with the roof and the internal spaces. It has a total of three floors and a profferlo, which was typical for medieval architecture, within the perimeter wall. The profferlo is an external staircase that is prominent in the San Pellegrino in Viterbo and only the surrounding areas. It is what makes this place so unique. The profferlo of the Palazzo Degli Alessandri is decorated with a star polyhedral. The interior ceiling is made of wood and decorated with coffers. The last level of the building was also lowered and hidden with a parapet, which is a protective wall commonly used in the medieval age.
Today, the building is connected to other buildings within San Pellegrino. It is still in use today as a historical sight and is the place where fairs and events are often held like the San Pellegrino in Fiore. [Jackie Miller, MU]
