Joyce,
Attached is an Excel file listing the Bradford and Tioga County students
enrolled in the Pennsylvania Soldiers' Orphan Schools in 1911. This is
taken from the Report of the Pennsylvania Commission of Soldiers' Orphan Schools
1911.
There were only two schools remaining at that time from a high of 42, Chester
Springs School in Chester County and the Industrial School in Scotland,
Cumberland County. On May 31, 1911 There were 157 boys and 98 girls at
Chester Springs; 236 boys and 142 girls at Industrial. This report lists
all enrolled students, date of birth, date of admission, name of father, mother,
whether they are living or not, referring individual, post office address of
applicant, unit information and rank of fathers' service (includes Sapnish
American War Vets as well as Civil War.)
The book contains reports by the Superintendents of each school including
budgets, enrollment, education and vocational reports, a list and count of the
clothing made at each school for student use, and a list of vegetables grown and
consumed at the school with its monetary value. Students in the program
are listed by county. While I have transcribed only Bradford and Tioga, I
will look up others. I will eventually make the entire list available to
the host of the Orphan School site.
I have a personal connection to this. My grandmother, born Mary Sunday,
her two brothers and a sister were students at these schools. Their father
was a Civil War veteran who died in 1909. They were residents of Centre County
at the time. She was adopted from the school at about age 9 but maintained
contact with her siblings. She lived in Tioga County from 1985 until her
death in 1997.
