1960 view of Mansfield High School. Front section , formerly the gym - converted to auditorium, was built about 1927 attached to the old Brick School. In 1939, the Brick School was torn down and the new school built surrounding the central gym. The 1939 section  on left became the Junior High School in the fall of 1959, and the High School is the new part on the right.

BLISS Donald - Mansfield Resident Killed When Struck by Car on Rt. 15
 A certificate of accidental death was issued Saturday afternoon in the case of Donald A. Bliss, 23 of Mansfield RD 3, who was killed at 10:20 p.m. Friday when he was struck by a car on Rt. 15, 1 ½ miles north of the state line near Lindley.  The fatality occurred across the road from the Green Shingles Restaurant.  Donald A. Bliss, 23, of Mansfield, RD 3, was killed Friday when he was struck by a car at 10:20 p.m. on Route 15, in Lindley, N.Y., one a half miles north of the state line.  According to New York State Police at Painted Post, Bliss was killed when he was struck by a car operated by Warren C. Walker, of Elkland.  Police said the northbound Walker car was passing another auto when it struck Bliss, who was standing in the roadway.  Bliss was apparently crossing the highway when he was struck.  A New York State coroner, Dr. Sandor Benedek, pronounced Bliss dead at the scene of the accident.  He said an autopsy performed Saturday morning at Corning Hospital showed that death was caused by a broken neck, skull fracture and multiple internal injuries.  Warren C. Walker, 34, of 201 Buffalo St., Elkland, driver of the car which struck Mr. Bliss, was charged by Painted Post state police with driving while intoxicated.  The defendant was arraigned before Lindley Justice Francil Tobey and was released without bail to obtain counsel.  The case was adjourned on a day-to-day basis.  Born Aug. 21, 1949 in Blossburg, he was the son of Hugh and Mary Erway Bliss.  A 1971 graduate of Mansfield State College, he was a member of the Lambs Creek Bible Church, manager of the Whitey Wilson Ski-Doo Shop at Mansfield, and drove a school bus for the Mansfield School District in the Pickle Hill area.  Surviving are:  his parents, at home; one brother, Dwight of Warren, Mich., one sister, Miss Linda Bliss of Harrisburg, Pa.; and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mazie Erway of Wellsboro.  Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Kuhl (formerly Shaw and Robena) Funeral Home in Mansfield, with the Rev. George Evans, pastor of the Lambs Creek Bible Church, officiating.  Burial was in Tioga Memorial Gardens at Mansfield.

Henry "Ed" Broadfield, age 77, of Catawissa, PA. Survived by his daughter Reba Broadfield, and his sister Elizabeth Broadfield. Predeceased by his parents, Henry and Ruth (nee Baker); brother Richard Broadfield. Born February 8th, 1944 in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial, Ed attended Mansfield Junior – Senior High School and graduated in 1967. Enlisting in the Coast Guard out of high school, Ed was proud of his active service, An avid photographer, winning the 15th Annual Spring Photography Contest from Photographer's Forum Magazine in 1995. He loved to be outdoors, whether he was fishing or going for walks. A longtime member of the Roseville United Methodist Church in Roseville, Pennsylvania. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. SHARON CUMMINGS [SRGP 88201]
Sharon Cummings, age 37, formerly of Mansfield, died at Pen-Taub Hospital in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday, Apr. 1, 1987, following a brief illness.  She was employed as a waitress at the Black Angus Restaurant at Houston.  She was pre-deceased by her mother, Elsie Cummings, in April 1978.  She is survived by her father and stepmother, William and Marjorie Cummings of Mansfield; three brothers, Bruce of York, Allan of Orlando, Florida, and Stephen of Wellsboro; stepsisters, Fawn Short of Cameron, N.Y., and Cheryl Cleland of Mansfield; two stepbrothers, Kelvin and William Cleland of Mansfield; fiance, Thomas Brumback of Houston, and several nieces and nephews.  Interment will be at the Oakwood Cemetery in Mansfield at the convenience of the family.    

DART, Larry Booth - Larry Booth Dart, age 70, of Wellsboro, PA passed away at his home on Saturday, March 28, 2020. He was born on November 26, 1949 in Wellsboro, PA, a son of H. Douglas and Ellen (Booth) Dart. Larry was a retired veteran of the US Navy, having served 21 years before retiring as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, then working for 17 years in the Human Relations department at Geico Insurance Company at their national headquarters in Virginia Beach. Larry was trained first as a chef and served on the staff at the National War College, fixing meals for military VIPs. He served aboard two aircraft carriers, the U.S.S. America and the U.S.S. Enterprise. He finished his Navy career as a drug and alcohol counselor, serving at the Submarine Base in New London, CT and in Newport, R.I. Larry was a member of Mansfield's Austin-Cox American Legion Post 478 for 23 years and a Life Member of the Mansfield Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served on Operation Seafloat in the Mekong Delta of Viet Nam early in his Navy Career. Larry is survived by brothers Bruce (Nancy) Dart and Timothy Dart, both of Mansfield, PA; sister Sue Ellen Nieland of Rosemont, MN; niece Heather (Tony) Musingo of Ava Maria, FL; niece Jaimee (Jason) Ulmer of Suwanee, GA; niece Chelsey (Jake) Reinhart of MN; niece Shawna (Steve) Krier of Port Washington, WI; nephew Clayton D. Nieland of MN; grandnephews Nicholas and Isaac Musingo and Jacob, Benjamin and Lucas Ulmer. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Stephen Dart. A private family memorial will be held over Memorial Day weekend at the family camp. Memorial contributions may be made in Larry's name to the American Legion Post 478, 83 E. HAFER, Sherry - Sherry H. Courtney, age 72, of Mansfield, PA, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, January 15, 2022. She was born on March 2, 1949, in Williamsport, PA, a daughter of Barry and Mary Lee (Ludwig) Hafer. Sherry was an elementary school teacher for the Troy Area School District for more than 25 years. In addition to her career in teaching, she and her husband also owned and operated The Farmer In The Dell and EsBern Dairy Farms in Mansfield, PA. Sherry was a longtime member of the Mainesburg United Methodist Church where she enjoyed leading worship and teaching adult and children's Sunday School classes. She will also be remembered for her talented singing ability. Sherry enjoyed volunteering at Broad Acres Nursing Home, sewing, gardening, and caring for her adored animals. Sherry was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Harold Courtney, Sr.; her mother Mary Lee Hafer; children, Olivia (Michael) Platt of New Columbia, PA; Charity (David) Packard of Painted Post, NY; and Harold (Rachel) Courtney, Jr. of Mansfield, PA; grandchildren, Caleb Platt, Katherine Platt, and Ruthann Courtney; brothers, Donald (Pamela) Hafer of Sayre, PA; and Barry (JoAnn) Hafer, Jr. of Port Matilda, PA; and a sister, Cynthia Bastian of Mansfield, PA. She was preceded in death by her father Barry Hafer, Sr. and her brother-in-law, Glenn "Skip" Bastian, Jr. Friends and family are invited to call from 10:00 A.M. to noon, on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at the Mainesburg United Methodist Church, 100 Smith Park Rd., Mainesburg, PA. NEAL, Dawn M. - Dawn M. Shellenberger of Philadelphia passed away suddenly on Dec. 3, after a stroke, complicated by pneumonia and Covid 19.  She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Larry Shellenberger; sisters, Darwina L. Neal of Washington D.C. and Marynel N. Somogy of Elmira N.Y. and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her brother, Charles L. Neal (wife Eleanor) of Mansfield and her parents, Darwin L. Neal and Ina Belle Cook Neal of Mansfield.  Dawn was born on April 10, 1949 in Mansfield. She graduated from Mansfield High School, then from Pennsylvania State University with a BA in French, and Drexel University with an MA in Library Science. After that, she worked in library and information services positions at various law firms and other business offices before retiring in 2013. PACKARD, Michael William - Michael William Packard passed away on October 19, 2019. He was born on July 10, 1949 to Jane Jenkins Packard and Stanley Packard in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. Michael grew up in Mansfield, Pennsylvania and graduated from Mansfield High School in 1967. He attended Mansfield State College for one semester before beginning work at Tri-County Rural Electric Cooperative. Michael was trained as a lineman by his father and his mentor, Robert Schwab. On September 6, 1969, Michael married Paula Sue Rogers at the Muhlenberg College Chapel in Allentown, Pennsylvania. This September they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family gathering in Port Aransas. In June of 1975, Michael and his family moved to Colorado so Michael could work as a lineman for Intermountain Rural Electric Cooperative and attend college in the evenings. While in Colorado Michael completed an associate degree in mathematics at Arapahoe Community College. He attended the University of Colorado for one year and began his lifelong fascination with computers. After three years working at Finley Engineering in Lamar, Missouri, Michael returned to rural electric utilities at Dickens Electric Cooperative in Spur, Texas as Operations Manager. The Packard family moved to Victoria, Texas in 1983 and Victoria Electric Cooperative where Michael stayed for eighteen years. In 2000 Michael left VEC to become Assistant Manager at South Texas Electric Cooperative in Nursery, Texas. In 2014 he retired after serving STEC as General Manager for 11 years. Michael's most treasured work memories were the 14 years he spent with the great STEC employees, including his son John. Michael is survived by his wife Paula and two children, Amy Packard and her husband Chris Jowaisas and John Packard and his wife Amber Packard. Michael is also survived by five grandchildren: Henry, Catherine, and Elizabeth Jowaisas; and Sophia and Hannah Packard. He is survived by a sister, Jeanette Nicolaisen and husband Ian of Madison, Wisconsin, and a sister-in-law, Linda Buonagurio and husband Mike of Leander, Texas. Michael was a great father to Amy and John. He played endless homemade games, helped with school projects, and made up silly jokes. Michael loved the visits every time Amy arrived from Seattle with her children and every time he saw John's children, so he could make the jokes and play the games all over again. Since retirement Michael enjoyed growing flowers in his backyard, controlling every device in his home with computers, playing with his dogs Ike and Tanner, and hitting as many golf balls as possible. Paula was his golf partner as well as his life partner. There will be a private burial service for Michael at the Sullivan State Road Baptist Church cemetery in Mainesburg, Pennsylvania. WILSON, Wayne R. - Wayne R. Wilson, age 68, of Mansfield, PA, died on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA. He was born on March 19, 1949 in Wellsboro, PA, a son of Richard and Colette (Maige) Wilson. Wayne was the husband of Peggy (Thorpe) Wilson. He retired from Ward Manufacturing on October 31, 2017. Wayne was a US Veteran having served in the Army National Guard. He was an avid tractor collector of Wheel Horse. Wayne enjoyed gardening, tinkering and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jessica Wilson of Mansfield, PA; a daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Jeremy Turner of Mainesburg, PA; six grandchildren, Taylor, Robert, Nathan, Ryan Turner, Raegan, Brycelynn Wilson; a brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Cindy Wilson of Mansfield, PA; a special niece, DeLecia Plouse of Ridgebury, PA, a special dog, Bruty. BAKER, Sonya L. Weed
Age 59, died Thursday, September 11, 2008, at the Highlands Care Center in LaPorte, PA. Sonya was born September 12, 1948 in Lock Haven, PA, the daughter of the late Dr. Charles E. and R. Eleanor Bitner Weed. She is survived by two brothers, William D. Weed, Williamsport, PA, and Stephen C. Weed, Wellsboro, PA; one sister, Brenda (David) Kohler, Middlebury Center, PA; and three nieces, Danielle, Alexandra and Brooke Kohler. Interment will be at Mt. Bethel Cemetery, Mill Hall, PA, at the convenience of the family. Services will be private. Arrangements are entrusted to the Dean K. William H. Youmans, age 72, of Mansfield, PA passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 24, 2021. He was born on April 21, 1949 in Blossburg, PA, a son of Raymond and Helen (Higley) Youmans. William and his wife, Donna (Barnes) Youmans, celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on June 8, 2021. He enjoyed doing yardwork.
William is survived by his wife, Donna; a daughter, Tammy (Raymond) Frost of Covington, PA; a son, William R. Youmans Sr. of Freeland, PA; four grandchildren, William R. Youmans Jr., Raelyn (Derek Bell) Frost, Ashley (Matthew) Zuercher, and Tiffany Frost; a great granddaughter, Isabella Bell; two brothers, Raymond "Ray" (Lula) Youmans of Muncy, PA, and Harold (Nancy) Youmans of Waco, TX; and two sisters, Edith R. Youmans of Wellsboro, PA, and Ethel House of Morris, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Sara Prince.
