School at Durell, nearly 100 years old, destroyed by Fire.

Copy of photo was given to me from my mother-in-law.  Daily Review article, dated February 11, 1948 reads:

Fire which broke out at about 10 o’clock yesterday morning destroyed the two-room school house at Durell.  None of the 62 pupils in the building at the time the blaze was discovered was injured in any way, being conducted from the structure in an orderly manner by their teachers, Mrs. Stephen R. Neiley and Mrs. Kenneth Kerrick, both of Durell.  The origin of the fire is not known for certain.  The blaze was first noticed by Mrs. Mary L. Taylor of Standing Stone when she arrived at the school to conduct music classes.

The Wysox and Towanda Fire Departments responded to the call for help but were unable to save the old, tinder-dry structure.  Water was pumped through two lines of hose from Bennett Creek nearby.
