Hi Joyce,

My grandmother, Norma ELLIOTT Newell, taught school for one year at the Thompson Hill School No. 5, in 1919. She had no formal training as a teacher and she used to say "The only reason they hired me to teach school is because nobody else wanted the job!"

The schoolhouse was located in the southeastern corner of South Creek Township. The schoolhouse is shown on the William Barker map of Bradford County so it must have been built sometime prior to 1858.

I didn't see any photos of the schoolhouse on your website so I thought I'd send some along. I attached to this email two photos from one of my grandmother's albums.

The larger photo shows a group of students and parents standing near the Thompson Hill schoolhouse; this might be a 1919 graduation photo or some other special occasion because everyone is all dressed up. My grandmother is not in the photo so I assume she was the photographer.

The smaller photo shows only the Thompson Hill schoolhouse. I can't say exactly when that photo was taken but it's on the same album page with a couple more photos of students at the school. Probably 1919.

Sincerely,
Paul Newell
