I came across this photo that my father, Elton Goodwin had. Elton was
born and lived on Spring Hill. I beleive that this postcard is a school
picture from that area but don't know for sure. I believe that the girl in
the back row third from the left might be my great aunt, Anita Hulbert (born 14
July 1883) who was a school teacher. Im guessing the vintage of the photo
might be 1895-1900. Would appreciate it if you could circulate this picture to
see if anyone recognizes it.

Halltown School |
This photo comes to me from Martha Walker in California. She sent it to me along with Marbaker family photos found in an album belonging to Almeda Wage Marbaker Gibbs (1846-1927). The Hall Town school was on the former Cecil and Pearl Brotzman Repsher farm on the Board Road, Tuscarora Township, Bradford County. There was, and still is a HUGE oak near where it stood. The family of Edward and Almeda Wage Marbaker lived in the house we used to live in just off the Board Road. Almeda and her second husband Russell Gibbs moved out about 1902 when Elisha and Rose Culver Brotzman purchased it. My guess is that this photo might have been taken while her children attended that school. I have no proof.
A little history regarding the Halltown school according to Gerald Shumway (1891-1991) who penned a history regarding the schools in Tuscarora Township. The contract to build the school was given to LeRoy Lacey in 1873. The total cost was $798.00. It was to be constructed on the lands of the "Widow Hall". That would be the former Caroline Ruger Hall (1829-1903). She was the widow of Theron James Hall who passed away in the Civil War at Newbern, North Carolina on April 1, 1863 of Typhoid. The school opened and closed several times according to Mr. Shumway. It finally closed for ever in 1917. Cecil told me the children were told to walk on over the hill to the Clapper Hill school on the Culver property. The Marbaker children would have been about half way between both.

School House for Sale
The school board for Tuscarora Township will offer for sale the school house
known as the Hall Town at 2 p.m. on Saturday May 26, at C. B. Culvers.
