Note the separation of girls and boys on the listing. It was customary
at this time to list the
boys first and then the girls. you will see separate doors on old schools for girls and boys, and the custom even extended into the listings. Educational opportunities were very limited for all children in rural areas at that time, but even moreso for the girls, whose education was considered less important. This is reflected in the listing. |
