When phones were first introduced in the rural areas in the 1890s, local people had to organize and finance the effort. In the 1900 Emerson Smith Diary he tells of the local people cutting the trees and mounting the poles so that the phone company could come along later and string the lines. Subscribers to the service paid dues and even into the 1960s, my grandfather always referred to his phone bill as the telephone Dues. |

Voltus is an obscure and extinct name in Sullivan Township. There was
a post office of that name in the area of Hulslander Road in the
northeastern part of the township. The name is no longer used in the township
and would not be recognized by any but historians.
