The house in this photo is in the Elk Run area of Sullivan, just north
of the bridge. Gus Welch, born 1896, and Grant Fethers, born 1893, are
the boys in the photo. That dates it at about 1902 or 1903. This house
belonged to Phoeba SMITH "Palmer" who deeded it to her daughter Minnie
PALMER "Fethers" in 1892, Phoeba died in 1899. Min PALMER "Fethers" is
the woman standing on the right. The sitting woman is probably her first
cousin, and Gus' mother, Ella SMITH "Welch" Both Min and Ella were grandaughters
of Arad SMITH and Margery GENOUNG of Sullivan. In 1912, Gus, Grant, and
my grandfather, Lee Tice, went to Sodus Point in New York State to pick
apples for the season. Lettters back to Lee's "best girl," Mildred Mudge,
tell of Gus sewing Grant's pant legs up at the bottom so he could not get
them on. |
