Mary Elizabeth Smith, like three of her siblings, became a homeopathic physician. Prior to that she taught school. One of her brothers, Dr. Augustus Smith,  practiced medicine in Pittsburg and he and others sent their tuberculosis patients to the Smith Family Sanitarium in Sullivan Township for the cure. Patients came into Columbia Cross Roads on the trains and traveled the few miles through Austinville to the sanitarium just west of the Bradford County - Tioga County boundary. To this day the hill is called Sanitarium Hill. Doc Mary, as she was called locally, ran the sanitarium until her death in 1926

Wellsboro Gazette, June 17, 1903
The Smith Sanitarium has been removed from Pittsburg and will be reopened July 1st in Sullivan township on the homestead of the late Northrup Smith. His children were nearly all physicians and such a use of his home seems highly fitting.

The original sanitarium building, shown in this picture, burned to the ground and was replaced by a smaller building which remains as a residence to the present day. The earlier building had many rooms and two stories of wrap around porches. Mail was delivered to the Austinville road below the sanitarium and was pulled up via an arrangement of pullies. A well was in the basement of the building making it unecessary to go outside for water as was required in most dwellings of the day.
