JACKSON Alford H. Jackson
Age 89, of Big Flats, died after an extended illness Fri. Jan. 31, 2010 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Alford was born Dec. 20, 1921 in Harvey's Lake, PA, a son to the late Garfield and Fanny (Perrego) Jackson. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy (Roberts) Jackson; daughter and sons, Janice Jackson, also of Big Flats, NY, David Jackson of Spencer, NY and Daniel Jackson of Corning, NY; grandchildren, Tom, Tim and Aaron Jackson; step grandchildren, Mark, Brian and David Bieberich; great-grandchildren, Anna and Alexa Bieberich; brother, Robert Jackson of Benton, PA. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Esther Grey and Dorothy Jackson; and daughter-in-law, Janet Jackson. He and his wife were founding members of the Community Wesleyan Church and active there on their board, singing on the choir and known for making his famous popcorn balls for many years. He was a pilot and veteran of the US Army Air Corps and retired from the Elmira Pattern and foundry as a pattern maker. He was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. He was also an honorary Fire Chief with the Golden Glow Fire Department. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St., Horseheads on Tues. JACKSON - Carlton J. Jackson, 83, of Horseheads, NY and Tavares, Fla., died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1992, at his home in Horseheads. He was born July 1, 1909 in Troupsburg, NY. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, graduated from Mansfield State Teachers College in 1930 and received his MS degree from Syracuse University. He was a former teacher at Elmira Free Academy, Elmira, NY, a former teacher and principal at Wellsburg, NY, and Big Flats, NY. He was a former district superintendent of the South Half of Chemung County. He retired as a secondary supervisor of the Horseheads Central School District in 1970. He was a member of the Big Flats F&AM Lodge and the New York State Retired Teacher's Association. He was a former member of the Horseheads, Elmira and Mt. Dora, Fla. Rotary clubs. He was active in the Elmira Sullivan Trail Boy Scouts of America and a recipient of the Scouting Silver Beaver award. Surviving are his wife, Louise Jackson; two cousins, Wendall Norton of Friendship, NY and Margaret Payne of Jasper, NY; several other cousins; nephew and niece, Charles [Bud] and Laura Link of Big Flats. Rich was born June 8, 1945 in Corning, NY the son of the late Earl and Bessie
V. Goodrich Johns Sr. He was retired from the Ann Page plant after 18 years of
service and also worked at Biggsy's and Sugar and Spice Restaurants. Richard
was a member of the Big Flats Wesleyan Church. He loved Hunting and Fishing.

survived by her two granddaughters, Susan Viditz-Ward of Waxhaw, NC, and
Kristina Smith of Dublin, NH. Predeceased by husband, Perry; and daughter,
Carolyn E. Hunter. Lucille was born in Elmira, NY and was a retired secretary
at Vernon Downs race track in New York. She was recently a First Lady with the
Bahia Shriners in Orlando, and was also a regular vendor at the local Flea
Market where she was kindly referred to as "The Candy Lady". The

Age 95, of Spencer Hill Road in Corning, NY, died Monday, March 3, 2008, at
Florida Hospital in Zephyrhills, Florida. Oscar was born in Corning on February
11, 1913 to Gustof and Dora (Paulsen) Johnson. He married Grace Harrington on
August 9, 1935 at her parent's home in Big Flats, and preceded him in death in
2003. He was employed by Corning Glass Works for many years as a melting
technician. He traveled extensively for Corning Glass troubleshooting melting
problems. After retirement, he consulted for Corning for ten years. He enjoyed
traveling with his family to Canada, Alaska, and Mexico in his motor home, and
enjoyed wintering in Webster, FL. He especially liked spending time at his
cabin in Canada. His survivors include two sons, Maynard (Madho Smith) Johnson
of Gatineau, Canada, and Richard (Marilyn) Johnson of Tampa, FL; two sisters,
Valburg Hammarstrom and Helen (John) Nichols of Corning; a granddaughter,
Michele (Nathan) Howell of Bowling Green, KY; several nieces and nephews. Oscar
was predeceased by his brothers, Hans and Adolph Johnson. Friends may call on
Monday, March 10, 2008, from 2 until 3 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home &

JONES, age 74 of Hammond St., Big Flats, NY. He was born September 1,
1940 in Corning, NY, son of the late Kenneth and Helen (Branch) Jones and
went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at Elcor Health
Services after an extended illness. In addition to his parents, he was
predeceased by his brother Paul Jones and nephew Kimberleigh Jones. Harold
is survived by his wife of 54 years, Anna (Cleary) Jones; sons Stacey Jones
and Charles Jones; sisters Eleanor Theetge of Horseheads, Charlotte Jacobus
of Brooksville, FL, Barbara Johnson of Clearwater, FL and Kathleen Johnson
of Suffolk, VA along with several nieces and nephews including special niece
Cathy Norgren. Harold played a different role to many people - the role of a
son, a brother, a husband, a father, an uncle, a nephew, a cousin and a
friend. He will be missed by all. Harold was a lifelong resident of Big
Flats, taking pride at living in the same zip code all of his life. He
attended Horseheads High School and received his Electrician's degree from
Williamsport Tech School. He worked as an independent electrician doing many
electrical jobs free for his friends and relatives. His passions were
hunting, fishing, camping and entering his "show" pigeons in competitions
all around the Southern Tier. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter

age 60, of Big Flats, died on Monday, June 24, 2013. He was born on May 15, 1953 in Rome, NY, the son of the late Robert and Gene (Bell) Jones. He married Rene Guild on August 27, 1977 in Auburn, NY. She predeceased him on November 21, 2006. Rick was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He worked at the Schuyler County ARC and especially enjoyed the interaction and friendships he created with the residents and co-workers. Previously, he worked for 30 years as a chef, and he was a member of the Big Flats Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his children, Ryan (Siobhan) Jones of Romulus, NY, Dan (Carrie Evanoika) Jones of Big Flats, and Katherine Alice "Kally" Jones of Big Flats; granddaughter, Rene JoAnn Jones; sister, Candace Jones of Syracuse; brother, Gary E. –CATHERINE LEE WELCH, age 49, of Sykesville, MD, died Saturday, June 20,
2015, at the Carroll Hospital Center. Born August 8, 1965, in Melbourne, FL,
she was the loving daughter of Harley Dean Jordan of Rochester, NY and
Patricia Brewster Jordan of Dunellen, FL. She was the wife of Craig S. Welch
and the love of his life. Cathy had been a homemaker and seamstress. She
enjoyed gardening, sewing, the outdoors, bird watching, traveling to Maine
and the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens. She was very committed to her family
and to helping others who are less fortunate. She was a member of Life Point
Church. Cathy had volunteered with the Liberty High School Drama Club.
Surviving in addition to her parents and husband are daughters and
son-in-law, Becky and Joe Thompson of Phoenix, AZ, Haley Welch and Casey
Welch both of Sykesville; sisters, Linda Anne Rooker of Morriston, FL,
Patricia Michelle Shechter of Rochester, NY and Cynthia Jordan Bachman of

Lillie K. Age 93, of Horseheads, NY, and formerly of Big Flats, NY, died on
Saturday morning, September 10, 2005. Lillie was born July 29, 1912 in Dodge,
NE, the daughter of the late Ludwig and Antonia Vondrachek Kadlec. Lillie
retired as a teacher from the Horseheads Central School District. She enjoyed card
playing, golf, traveling and her family. She was a communicant of St. Mary Our
Mother Church, their Rosary and Altar Society, and involved with the Big Flats
Senior Center Group, Elmira area Retired Teachers, Big Flats American Legion
Auxiliary, NARFE, and Big Flats Historical Society. Preceding her in death was
her husband, Frank S. Ford. She is survived by her nieces & nephew,
Josephine (Robert Sr.) Roemmelt, Joan Kadlec and Vincent (Judy) Kadlec, all of
Horseheads, NY; great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces & nephews.

KAHLER Harry Lowe Jr. Beloved Father and Grandfather Age 80 of Horseheads, NY died very peacefully at home on Sunday August 7, 2005. Mr. Kahler was born in Big Flats, NY on June 18, 1925 the son of the late Harry Lowe Kahler and Florence Gowan Kahler. Harry was a veteran of WW II serving his country with The US Navy as a Pharmacist's Mate Third Class attached to The US Marine Corps as a Combat Medic in The Pacific Theater from 1943-1946. Harry received The American Theater Medal, The Victory Medal, and The Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal upon his honorable discharge from The US Navy. Harry attended Union College prior to entering the US Navy and after his discharge. Harry married his wife, Ann Patterson Kahler, on March 31, 1951. Harry worked at the Dean & Lee Feed Company in Horseheads which his father and uncle founded and ran for several years. He was a member of Clarence R. Oliver American Legion Post # 154 in Elmira Heights, NY . Harry was an Amateur Radio Enthusiast who also enjoyed gardening and fixing televisions. Harry retired from Hardinge Brothers in Elmira, NY as a Shipping Supervisor in 1995. He loved his family and friends and cherished the time he spent with them. Harry was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 47 years Ann Patterson Kahler on July 18, 1998. He was also pre-deceased by his sister and brother-in-law Eleanor & Dudley Roberts; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Rosemary & Bud Longwell; and brother-in-law Walter Patterson. Age 43 of St. Petersburg, Florida formerly of Horseheads, NY died very
unexpectedly on Thursday January 18, 2007. Thomas was born July 26, 1963 in
Elmira, NY the son of the late Harry Lowe Kahler Jr. and Ann E. Patterson
Kahler. Tom was a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Elmira, NY and received
his Bachelor's Degree from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY. He was a
platform manager at Sun Trust Bank in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Thomas was an
accomplished pianist and enjoyed playing his baby grand piano for family and

Corning, N.Y. — Robert L. Kies, 78, of Columbia St., Daysprings I, Corning died
Monday, September 14, 2010 at home. He was born March 14, 1932 in Corning
the third of five children of Harvey and Bessie Kies. After working at the Food
Mart through high school, he enlisted in the Air Force and was a Drill
Sergeant. In 1955 he moved to Detroit where he spent over fifty years in
graphic arts. His hobbies included western movies and the Detroit Tigers.
Robert is survived by three children, Christopher Kies of Sterling Heights, MI;
Thomas Kies of South Carolina and Tracey Lawson of Ohio. A fourth child,
Bonnie, died earlier this year. He was also survived by his sister,
Pauline Ambbrosone of Corning, a brother, William (Jackie) Kies of Campbell and
six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, James and
sister, Marie. A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday,

William G. Kelly, 78, of Big Flats, NY, died Friday, December 24, 1993.
Mr. Kelly was born on December 29, 1914 in LeRoy, PA, the son of Sevellon and
Mabel Kelly. He was a veteran of World War II and retired as an electrician
after 30 years at the Bendix Corp. in Horseheads in 1976. He was a
lifelong member of the Civilian Conservation Corp. and a long time member of
the Big Flats Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 50 years,
Madeline; daughters and sons-in-law, Joan (Fred) Stock of Dryden, NY and Debbie
(Wayne) Mitchell of Horseheads; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary (Marsha) Kelly

KENNEDY Brian P.
Age 68, of Easterbrook Drive West in Big Flats, NY, died Wednesday, November 4,
2009, at his home surrounded by his family. Born in Buffalo, NY on May 10,
1941, he was the son of George and Mary (Homa) Kennedy. Brian was a graduate of
Canisius College in 1963. He married Carolyn Gauss in 1990. Brian worked for
over 30 years for the Dresser-Rand Company, and retired from Painted Post in
2006 as a director of trade finance. He was an avid Bills fan, loved to read,
travel, and play golf. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; two daughters, Marty
(Steve) Chenetz of Portville, NY and Molly (Scott) Marsh of Great Valley, NY; a
son, Brian (Ann) Kennedy, Jr. of Elmira; stepchildren, Paul (Amy) Durkin of
Aberdeen, MD, Steve (Jill) Durkin of Painted Post, Sue (James) Sonner of
Corning, and Karen (Phil) Mazzarese of Horseheads; 16 grandchildren; two
nephews, Sean Higgins and Eric Higgins; cousins, Ida Wygant and Joan Melligan;
many special friends, including Tony and Merlyn Cavallaro and Richard and
Carolyn O'Dell; and his dog, Gidget. Brian was predeceased by his sister and
brother-in-law, Christine and Michael Higgins; and a cousin, Ed Wygant. Friends

KLEESE –WANDA MAY (KLEESE) ROGERS, age 90, of Clearwater, FL and formerly a long time resident of both Pine Valley and Airport Rd. in Big Flats and Spencerport, NY, died Monday, August 1, 2004 in Florida. Mrs. Rogers was born in Huntersville, PA on May 16, 1914. She was graduated from Huntersville High School in 1932 and later Expert Training and Business School in Williamsport, PA in 1935. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Rogers, in 1985; and is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles P. and Jean Rogers of New Port Richey, FL and Brockport, NY, Ronney R. and Carol Rogers of Palm Harbor, FL; grandchildren, Steven Rogers, Faith Rogers-Aubel, Karen Pina, Ronney A. Rogers, Randy H. Rogers, Scott, Sherri and Stephen Barkley; along with eight great-grandchildren. Together with her husband they owned and operated Newton’s Restaurant in Pine Valley from 1949-1953. Having baked well over 5500 pies per year, she was affectionately known at the “Pie Lady”. From 1969 until their retirement in 1979 they owned and operated Rogers Floor Maintenance, Inc. in Big Flats. Locally she was a member of the American Baptist Church in Big Flats and more recently in Florida, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Safety Harbor and active in the Women’s Group there. She was also a 50-year member of O.E.S., Order of Eastern Star and Rebecca’s in Corning, NY. Wanda was also an avid NY Mets Fan who enjoyed crocheting and writing letters. HERBERT KLING of this city (Corning) died at the home of his aunt, Mrs. F. Grossman near Big Flats yesterday afternoon (Sept. 11, 1905), aged 15 years. He had been ill for nearly a year and recently went into the country to live for the benefit of his health. His father died some four of five months ago. He is survived by two brothers, William and Louis and one sister, Minnie. The funeral will be held from the home of his aunt on Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, the Rev. George B. KNAPP –MRS. FLORENCE GRACE PHILLIPS, 52 of Beaver Dams, RD 2 died at her home at Post Creek at 8:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 1942. She had been ill for two and a half years and about three weeks ago was removed to her home from St. Joseph’s Hospital, Elmira where she had been under treatment. Surviving are her husband, John Phillips; two uncles, John and Ernest Knapp, both of Hornell. The funeral was held at the Phillips Funeral Home, Corning Saturday at 2:30 p.m., the Rev. H. S. KNAPP –MRS. HAZEL MULLEN age 82 of 3109 Sing Sing Rd., Horseheads Sunday, October 23, 1988 at the Arnot-Ogden Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Mullen was born in the Town of Big Flats on January 14, 1906, daughter of John and Nellie Crandall Knapp. She was a life long resident of Big Flats and a graduate of Elmira College. In 1952 she was predeceased by her husband Raymond. Survivors include; son, Ross of Big Flats; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Chester Wawrzyk of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Michael, Raymond and Patricia Wawrzyk. Hazel was very devoted to her family and took a great deal of pride in her home, where for many years she cared for countless foster children, she had also been employed by several restaurants in the Big Flats area. JOHN KNAPP – The funeral of John Knapp, 55, late of Big Flats was conducted at the family home today at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. Mrs. Lillian Chapman of the Presbyterian Church. Age 89 died on Saturday, October 12, 2013 surrounded by his family at his beloved home of 50 years on County Road 64 in Big Flats, NY. He was born September 21, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY to Dorothy and Edward Kramer Sr. and is survived by his sons and daughters: Peter Kramer of Elmira, NY; Douglas Kramer of Winchester, VA; Barbara Kramer of Horseheads, NY; Laura (Drew) Frye of Vienna, VA. Predeceased by Peggie (McCarthy) Kramer, the love of his life for 60 years. Survived by grandchildren Tyler Kramer, Hayden Kramer, Valerie Kramer, Jessica Frye and great-grandson Nolan Sullivan. Also survived by brother Raymond (Marlene) Kramer of Westminster, VT, sister Dorothy (Michael) (Kramer) Stasko, Levittown, NY. Predeceased by brother Donald Kramer. Graduated cum laude from Columbia University in 1950. Proud WWII Army Veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart during the Battle of the Bulge. Employed by Corning Inc for 30 years, he retired in 1985 from the Electrical Products Division where he was a member of the President Sales Club for many years. He enjoyed entertaining family and friends as Captain of the "Moomba" on Seneca Lake. Magnificent piano player and story teller who had a fantastic turn of phrase. Most of all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and "Pampa." His hobbies consisted of feeding and watching the wildlife, classic cars, and dedicated crossword puzzle aficionado. Maria H. Classical Pianist Known as Mitzi, she was a devoted and loving wife,
mother and friend. Maria age 91 of 66 Main Street, Big Flats, died Tuesday,
September 25, 2001 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. She was born April
2, 1910 in Vienna, Austria the daughter of Henry and Hermine Krotenthaler. She
married Dr. Otto Lederer on September 3, 1938 in Vienna, Austria and emigrated
from England to the United States in 1940. She was a member of the Hillview
United Methodist Church of Big Flats, the Elmira Rotary Anns, the Corning
County Club, and a founding member of the Big Flats Women's Club. Maria was a
classical pianist and tutored students both in piano and the French language.
Her passions included playing Bridge with friends and completing crossword
puzzles. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Otto Lederer; two sons
and daughter-in-law, Dr. G. Peter Lederer of Big Flats, Dr. Thomas H. and Caren
Lederer of Olney, MD; two grandchildren, Eric T. Lederer and Kristina S.
Lederer both of Olney, MD. Her sister Friederike Karner predeceased her in
1997. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 2:00 PM in
the Hillview United Methodist Church in Big Flats with the Rev. Dr. Edward
Kennedy officiating. Interment will be in Rural Home Cemetery, Big Flats at the
convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made in Maria's name to
the Chemung County SPCA, Route 352, Elmira, NY 14903. Arrangements are with
