Joyce's Search Tip - January 2008
|
Do You Know that you can search just the
Obituaries
on
the site by using the three County Specific Obituary selections
in the Partitioned search engine at the bottom of the Current
What's New Page? You can narrow your search by including a key
word in the cemetery name or a township name in addition to the surname
you search. Then select the Find All Words option.
You'll also find obituary and other newspaper clippings using Clippings
partition. Additional clippings can be found in the Birth, Marriage,
and some other partitions. |

Reading a series of obituaries from a single
cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational
history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular
time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives
and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade"
or business.
All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH.
Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname
can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries.
Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries.
If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email
or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. Tice (JoyceTice@aol.com) |
Hi Joyce,
Many years ago, post 1972 flood, I copied the cemetery stones at the
Breesport
County Home Cemetery. They circle a hill and the small stones
only contain a number and the initials of the person buried. I have
searched for years for a copy of internments for this cemetery. I
was told by the Chemung Co. Dept. of Vital Statistics that a record did
exist at one time but was lost in the 1972 flood. I had someone check
the death records on file in Albany and they have no burial records for
this cemetery. The only way someone will find who is buried there
is to read obituaries unless family members know they have someone buried
there. I did find one one obituary but there are a couple of stones
containing the same initials.
I also have the names of all who resided at the County Home from census
records. I can also provide that information by year. Not all
who lived and died here are buried here. Many died at the County
Home but were buried in family plots in other cemeteries.
Joyce, If you would like this information for your web site, I will
gladly send it by email.

Elmira Gazette, January 19, 1882. How It Is Done At
The Poor House.
In some communities an idea prevails to a certain extent, that when
a pauper died in a poor house, the remains are placed in a box, loaded
on a stone boat, and dragged away to the potter’s field. That is not the
way it is done in the Chemung County Poor House. There was buried from
the county house last Tuesday Mary Howard, who was over ninety years of
age. She had been in the home for many years, and was of German descent.
The funeral was in charge of Rev. S. W. Lindsley, and was quite largely
attended, the inmates of the house and others being present. The remains
were interred in the burying ground connected with the institution, and
were reverently borne thither.

JOHN SHAKESPEAR DEAD. Oldest inmate of the Chemung County Poor House.
About forty years ago John Shakespear was found wandering about the streets
of Elmira, and he was taken to the county poor house at Breesport. He was
dumb but not deaf. He has ever since been an inmate of that institution,
being the oldest one, his name heading the list. He died at midnight Saturday.
His relatives, if he had any, were never known by the officials.
