Elwin F. Howard, son of Mrs. E. A Ruttenbur, who is a seaman on the U.
S. S. Pocahontas, was home last week on a short furlough. He visited
his mother, who is now living in Tioga, and also renewed acquaintances
in Mansfield.
He enlisted as an apprentice seaman and is now a seaman.
The Pocahontas is one of Uncle Sam’s third class cruisers and has
been doing its bit for the war. It has been fired on by a submarine
only once, however, and needless to say the sub did not stay for a fight
at that time. Note: column ends here, not continued
From Elwin F. Howard 08 MAY 1918
Dear Mother:
How is everything at home? I am well nd getting on fine,
and hope you are alal the same. I am now at Newport News, Va.
It is nice here. We just got in today. I have not got my mail
yet. I would like to see you all. Have you moved yet?
I have got a ring a little French girl gave me. I will try and send
it to Leona. It is too light for me She is some girl believe
me. Write to my old address. We go again soon.
Well, mother, do not worry; but we were under fire from six submersible
cruisers once. The shrapnel flew all around us. We had some
fight. We fired forty (40) rounds at them. We rammed and sunk
a submarine on the 28th of March. So I know what it is to face death.
Some of the fellows were hunting for shrapnel during the battle.
Will close now, with love; write soon.
