Ernest McConnell was in Wellsboro Tuesday for examination before the draft board.
“Shorty” McConnell
– Mansfield soldier who had a unique army career, back at his old job in Cunningham’s barber shop.  Shorty  was sent to training camp last October, won a sharpshooter’s medal, shipped to France on October 25, served as motorcycle orderly during the last battles of the war, was under fire several times, ran head on into a shell hole, and was laid up with a broken ankle, in the hospital at Blois, where he met Howard Dorsett.  Was send home on the Leviathan and reached New York December 15.  Received his honorable discharge in January and is now back at his old job, after having had a whole life’s experience crowded into three months.

Ernest McConnell, Goes Through Experience of Real Warfare, and Is Back in Mansfield In Three Months.

 Ernest McConnell, son of A. N. McConnell, of Mansfield, who is familiarly known to his friends as “Shortly”, was in the boro on a five-day furlough this week. It has been but a short time since “Shorty” was working in the Cunnigngham barber shop, but in

 Ernest McConnell, who has just returned from France, visited his sister, Mrs. Samuel Wells, last week.

  1.  Ernest V.1 McConnell, son of Allen Nicholas McConnell and Mattie Cobb, (#5288) was born in Mansfield, Richmond Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 27 APR 1894.  Individual flags: WW1; Soc.Sec..  Shorty died 22 JAN 1977 in Mansfield, Richmond Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 82.

 He married Marie Schwab.  (Marie Schwab is #5289.)  Marie was born 23 FEB 1898 in Manhattan, Pennsylvania.  Marie was the daughter of Alfred Schwab* and Katherine Stahli*.  Marie died ABT 2001 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age unknown.  Marie was living in Wellsboro in 1997. Shorty McConnell was a barber for many years in Mansfield PA.

      Ernest V. McConnell and Marie Schwab had the following child:

      2  i.  Shirley Ann2 McConnell (#5296) was born in Lawrenceville, Lawrence Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 2 APR 1927.  She married Arthur K. Johnson 21 DEC 1946 in Mansfield, Richmond Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  (Arthur K. Johnson is #5297.)  Arthur was born 16 JUN 1929 in Mansfield, Richmond Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Arthur was the son of Stuart M. Johnson* and Marie Kiley*.  He married Gladys Unknown (Johnson).  Arthur was not listed as a survivor in son, Steven's, 1997 obituary. Shirley was of Mainesburg PA in 1997. She died abut 2000.
