While my son Joe and I were visiting several cemeteries in NY and PA during
April 2005 we stopped at the "Stone House" in Farmington Twp, Tioga Pa.
The stone house was contracted by my Great Grandfather James Northrup
Leonard and his brother George Washington Leonard (sons of Justus
Leonard and Nancy Young) with financing help from their uncle James B Leonard
(Justus's brother). The stone was quarried right behind the house. The
stone mason was Eugene Marsh. The year was about 1888. James N bought out
George W's interest. James N and his wife Kate Gee lived temporarily
in a log cabin behind the house where the present addition is located.
James B lived with James N and Kate. He spent many years in California
during the Gold rush era and as a civil war soldier. I have read
where James B tried to get James N and Kate to go to California but Kate
would not agree to it. So James came east and they built the stone house.
Many photo's have been taken by my ancestors at the West wall of the
house. I am happy to include mine. There are several photo's attached including
one of Joe, myself Mary and Stuart Roe.
You will see that the barn was not kept up and has finally collapsed.
I met my second cousin Mary Ellen Wakley and her husband Stuart Roe
at the house. They live nearby and saw me roaming around the property.
Her Mother Ora Everson Wakley is now 85 and ill. She may not return
to the house. It looks like the stone house will not be in the Leonard
family much longer unless someone steps in and saves it.
