This 1890s Photo shows the Hotel French with two stories. Note that
later it had three stories as one was added between the second story and
the roof.
The building now known as the Hotel French was originally
a private residence. When first used for hotel purposes it was known as
the Fuller House. It has had many landlords. In December, 1896, the property
was purchased by M.S. French, for several years landlord of the Allen House,
and was remodeled and occupied by him in the spring of 1897. [1897 History]
Marcus Shepard French was first in Mansfield in 1880 as a brick
mason. His wife was Henrietta Nares who came from a family of brick
masons. They married in New York state in 1873. I imagine that she met
Marcus as an employee of her family's business. Henrietta's niece, Caroline
Nares, lived with them in 1910. In 1913 Caroline married Harry Smith
and they took over the hotel from her aunt and uncle.
Marcus French, son of Henrietta and Marcus, also entered the
hotel business. He ran the Troy House in Troy, for some time, also
Ward house in Towanda, and died of an aneurism in 1919 in the Hotel Langwell
in Elmira where he was employed. [Joyce M. Tice] |
