Commemorative Plaques & Flagholders
Order of the Shepherds of Bethlehem |
Truth, Hope, and Faith are the mottos of this organization. This was found on the grave of a woman who also belonged to the Daughters of America to give you an idea of her political beliefs (Anti-Immigration-Anti-Catholic, etc.). In fact the two flagholders are on the same "pole" as is common when multiple commemorations are on one grave. This does not mean that the organizations were in any way related. This group was one of a large number of Fraternal Benefit Societies - mutual help. It was founded in Trenton NJ in 1896 but those who wrote the original literature claimed that it began in the Holy Land shortly after the birth of Christ. It was open to people of both sexes and is apparently now extinct. This flagholder was found in Albany County NY. (Source Alan Axelrod, Page 16) |
