Shafer - Coe Family Tree
(The following information is to the best of my knowledge as of March 26, 2006) Submitted by Stacey Rozell
.
Generation 1:
Diederick Shafer was  born in the year 1740 in Germany and died March 1807 in Orange County, NY.   He married Mary (unknown) who was born in Germany. Diederich was the son of a Diederich Schaeffer born in the early 1700’s in Germany.  Diederich, along with his parents and 2 brothers moved from Germany to Pennsylvania in 1750, then moved to Orange County, New York around 1769.

Generation 2:
George Dederick Shafer was born about 1760 in Pennsylvania and he died March 1841 in New Prospect, Ulster Co., NY and is buried in New Prospect Cemetery, Ulster Co., NY.  He married Catherine Rhinehart who was born about 1757.

Generation 3:
John Dederick Shafer was born November 14, 1788 in New Prospect, Ulster Co., NY.  He was baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church in Wawarsing, Ulster Co., NY.  The date of his death is possibly 1870.  He married Sarah ******* who was born in 1781 and died after 1868.

Generation 4:
John Shafer (Photo at right) was born April 17, 1818 in Orange County, NY and he died April 18, 1886 in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY.  He married Charity Coe who was born in 1820 on the Middle Road in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY and she died in 1887 in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY.  They are both buried in Newton/VanDuzer Cemetery on East Road in Sullivanville, Chemung Co., NY.

Generation 5:
John Shafer Jr. was born in 1854 in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY and died in January 1938 in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY.  He married Ida Chapman who was born in 1855 and died August 17, 1911 in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY.  They are both buried in Newton/VanDuzen on East Road in Sullivanville, Chemung Co.,
NY.

Generation 6:
Charles Shafer was born in 1883 in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY and died in 1954, in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY.  He married Frances Beardsley who was born in 1891 and died in 1982.  They are both buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY.

Generation 7:
Maude Shafer was born August 29, 1915 in Chemung Co., NY and died June  1981 in Elmira, Chemung Co., NY.  She married Linford Jay Turner who was  born November 21, 1903 and died June 1978.  Maude and Linford are both buried  in Maple Grover Cemetery in Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY.

Notes:
Sarah, the wife of John Dederick Shafer is possibly the daughter of John Butters.
The name of her mother is unknown.  John Butters was born in April 1735 in  England and died November 20, 1818.  Names for the children of John Dederick  Shaffer who married Sarah butters all match the children and dates of the children  of our Dederick and Sarah Shafer.  I haven’t been able to get any solid proof for  this information but it is probably correct.  Sarah is found in the 1868 tax roll for
Veteran, Chemung County, New York as Mrs. Dederick Shafer.  So she died after 1868.  The last year that Dederick is found in the tax records is 1869.

Charity Coe, the wife of John Shafer b. 1818 d. 1886 was the daughter of  Sheldon Coe and Sally Parmenter.  The Coe family originated from England.       She was born in 1820 on the Middle Road in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY.   Charity and John had 9 children and only 4 of them lived to adulthood.

Ida Chapman the wife of John Shafer Jr. b. 1854 d. 1938 committed suicide by  setting herself on fire.  Their son Charles Shafer was the one that
found her and he  had nightmares the rest of his life about what he found.  Ida was the daughter of  William and Louisa Chapman.  They are buried in Newton/Sandbank/Van Duzer/  East Sullivanville Cemetery in Veteran, Chemung Co., NY.

Frances Beardsley , the wife of Charles Shafer b. 1883 d. 1954 was the daughter  of David E. Beardsley and Josephine Axtell.  David and Josephine are both buried  in Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY.

Linford Jay Turner, the husband of Maude Shafer b. 1915 d. 1981 was the son  of Thomas Jay Turner and Effie M. Longcoy.   Thomas and Effie are both buried  in Maple Grove Cemetery, in Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY.
