Preface.

The annual meeting of the Lilley family since 1897 has been a source of pleasure, resulting in the preparation of a family history and genealogy. Although not as complete as may be desired, yet, it has required much persistent effort to secure names and dates necessary to an approach to what we all want, a complete family record. If errors are made to appear, deal with them gently, believing your Historian has done the best he could with the names, dates and facts that have appeared to him. His mistakes may be the stepping stones for others "to step to the front" and "build anew," if so, the family ties should lead to encouragement along that line. Knowing the high esteem with which Great-Grandmother Smith is remembered by the Lilleys, it is deemed best to add a brief history and genealogy of Ebenezer Smith and descendants to this work. The expressed desire on the part of some of the descendants of Great-Uncle Dummer Smith is believed will be cordially reciprocated by all of the Lilleys, and an invitation will be extended to all living descendants of Ebenezer and Polly Smith to meet with us at our next annual reunion in 1903.

Lilley Genealogy and History

Lilley is of Anglo Saxon origin and is spelled :--Lily, Lyly, Lilly, Lille, Lilley, Lillie and Lilie. The last is the Anglo Saxon spelling. The first learned of the Lilleys is "that they are said to be of Norman descent and sprung from Sir Robert and John De Lille, who came over from Normandy to England in the army of William the Conqueror in 1066." Their descendants spread throughout England, Scotland and Ireland, and thence westward throughout the United States. As among the most noted, in the annals of English history, may be mentioned William Lilly, an eminent grammarian, who was born in 1468 and died in 1523. By direction of the King, his Latin grammar was used 100 years in the English schools. John Lilly, or Lyly, an English dramatist, born in 1553, died in 1600, and William Lilly, an English astrologist, born in 1602, died in 1681. The genealogy of one branch of the family sets forth that "one George Lillie came from Scotland about 1650 and settled in Connecticut, and his descendants are traced throughout the Eastern and Middle States," and another branch sets forth that "one George Lilley came from England and settled at Reading, Mass., in 1654 and the descendants are traced westward." Our branch of the family so far as definitely known, commences with John Lilley, who was born in Ireland of English parentage. A record says he was born in "Parish De Mammon, Roscommon county, Province of Conneaught," Ireland. His [page 3] parents died when he was a mere child, and he was cared for by an uncle who was a great lover of horses. Beside caring for his uncle’s horses he learned the trade of weaver. At the age of fifteen he was pressed into the British service where he as one of the king’s soldiers aided in suppressing the Irish rebellion. While in this service he received two bullets which he carried till his death. After several years’ service in Ireland he was transferred to Canada, where he served a considerable time. Tiring of serving the king, he with four others sought independence by leaving the British flag and escaping across the line into New York at Ogdensburg, from which place he went to Vermont. Being in a strange land and unacquainted with pioneer life, he worked a few years among the farmers, learned to quarry and polish marble and boated on Otter creek. He married Nancy Smith, a girl of fourteen, who was born in Warner township, Merrimac county, N. H. She was a daughter of Ebenezer and Polly (Mary) Smith. In the winter of 1812 with his wife and children, John, Polly and Robert, together with his household goods and the pork from a four hundred pound hog, he started from his home at Middlebury, Addison county, Vermont, with horses and sleigh. In three weeks he reached his journey’s end at what was known as Oak Hill. At first he moved into a double log house occupied by Amos Himes and David Taft on a farm near Long’s Mill, one mile from Troy, now belonging to the heirs of the late Alonzo Long. In 1815 he bought 39 acres of land in Columbia township of James C. Fisher [page 4] of Philadelphia, for $117.80. In 1819 he bought lands of Samuel Baldwin and also of Oliver Besley. He finally settled on Basket Street in Columbia township, where he lived until death. He became a good farmer. He was a Whig in politics, yet a great lover of Jefferson. He always enjoyed the militia trainings and prepared the trimmings for the parade dress of the Columbia Artillery company. He was a member of the Disciple church and was immersed by Rev. Silas E. Shepard. His death was caused by pleurisy followed by abscess. He was buried in the cemetery near by his residence. Record :--

Dummer Lilley (2) was born at Troy, and when twelve years of age went to live with Stephen Fowler, a celebrated physician, who promised to school him in his profession. He enjoyed three years’ schooling at Dr. Fowler’s and then returned to his father, because Dr. Fowler had decided to settle in Ohio. His father told him he was too fond of books to make a successful farmer and consented to his learning the printer’s trade. He soon commenced work on the Bradford Settler, a paper published by J. P. Bull. In 1830 he engaged in the anti-Masonic Democrat office at Troy, remaining until the paper was discontinued two years afterwards. In company with G. W. Kinney, he printed the Troy Argus for a short time. In 1834 he became a member of the firm of Utter, Kinney & Lilley, publishers of the Bradford Argus, the first number being dated Feb. 4, 1834. At end of first year he sold his interest to Utter, but one year later became sole proprietor. He continued the paper until 1840, when he sold to Elhanan Smith. He soon after purchased a farm in Canton township, now owned by Hon. L. T. Manley. In the fall of 1856 he was elected County Commissioner of Bradford county, Pa. In 1862 he was elected as Representative to the State Legislature and was re-elected the following term. In 1838 Governor Ritner appointed him Register of Wills and Recorder of Deeds. Before 1850 he purchased the old homestead on Basket Street, Columbia township, where he resided until death. He was the first president of the [page 13] Troy Grange Mutual Insurance Company. During the gold excitement of 1848-9, he went to California with many others from Canton and Alba. The last house he built before going is now owned and occupied by Henry Palmer, two miles east of LeRoy, Pa. As to his California history, his son George’s wife says: "He was a contractor for some of the finest buildings of his time, among them the Normal School of San Jose (his home), the employes of which presented him a very fine gold watch, which George still uses and prizes very highly. In politics he was a Republican, and was elected assessor twice in succession and was school trustee for two terms. At the time of his death he was superintendent of a large lumber company, which conveyed lumber from Santa Cruz to Felton, via of a flume. He went one morning to inspect this flume. He slipped and fell 93 feet, breaking his neck. He was very popular in San Jose, and his funeral was one of the largest ever seen in the city. Rich and poor, high and low, all came to pay him their last respects. He was a member of Garden City Lodge, I. O. O. F., but not a [page 27] member of any religious sect. He was a jolly, light hearted man and the life of any social gathering. Fast horses and fine bred stock were his hobby, and he owned and drove some of the best in the county." Record:

History of Ebenezer and Polly (Pattee) Smith

:---

Ebenezer Smith at an early day was a resident of Vermont. He was of English descent, and had a brother Burley, who was a sea captain. Ebenezer was a shoemaker and farmer. Very little of his history is known. He owned and lived on lands afterwards owned by the Cornells of Columbia township, Bradford county, Pa. He married Polly Pattee, a daughter of Capt. Asa Pattee, who served in the French and Indian war, and settled at Warner, N. H., at the close of the War of the Revolution. Polly had a sister Ruth, who married Jacob Currier of Warner, N. H. Their mother died Oct. 18, 1841, at the age of 87 years and 8 months, and was buried at Warner, N. H. The following inscription was placed on her tombstone: "She has gone to the grave like a shock of corn fully ripe." Her funeral sermon was preached by a Universalist. In a letter dated Jan. 26, 1842, and directed to Ebenezer Smith, Sylvania, Columbia township, Pa., she calls her sister Mary instead of Polly, and also says her mother was a pensioner. The Pattees were of French descent. Ebenezer Smith lived to be 71 years [page 33] of age. One day as the family returned home from a short absence, he was found dead by the side of a back log that he had been trying to put on the fireplace. No one could tell the cause of his death. His son Dummer resided in Columbia township, and was an expert drillmaster on training days, as well remembered by some old people. He was a carpenter by trade and lived at Sylvania for some years.
