Dear Joyce, I never knew my grandfather Herman L. Brown. He died in 1963
and I did not start my quest for family until 1969. In 1969 I made a
connection with the National Archives concerning my grandfather's army record.
That led me Bradford County and the discovery of my Brown Line all the way back
to Thomas Brown IV. Here is my grandfather Herman L. Brown at the age of
Twenty-one. He enlisted in the Army July 11, 1900 in Athens, Bradford County,
Pa. during the Spanish-American War. At the time of his enlistment he was
living in Homett's Ferry and he lists Homett's Ferry as his place of birth. He
made his living by working on the railroad as a steam Pumpman. Herman was the
first child of Nelson Brown and Emma Jane Jennings. Nelson shows up a farmer in
the 1900 Wyalusing Directory. As the story continues, after his enlistment was
over, he was discharged at Fort Douglas, Utah, July 10,1903. He stayed in Salt
Lake City for a while and there married a young Swedish girl whose name was
Lovisa. After the birth of two boys the family moved to Los Angeles, Cal. Here
Llovisa died of TB and Herman left his son's in the care of Lovisa's cousin and
left for the East. He did not turn up until 1926 when he returned home to
Wyalusing and his father's home on Lime Hill. Shortly thereafter His father
Nelson passed away and Herman took over the family farm. Here he stayed until
his
death in 1963. Though I never knew him in life, I feel very close him now,
and my regret
