During a conversation we had  I mentioned that as part of the process of researching my Cummings line,--Descendants of Silas & Mary R. (Barber) Cummings,--I had accumulated a considerable amount of elimination data,--information on separate and distinct Cummings families (unless future research discloses currently unknown connections) in the SRGP-area as well as other parts of Tioga County.

This listing could act as a Cummings Families Index:
Alexander & Rosanna (-----) Cummings
African-American Cummings line. Alexander & Rosanna appear in Franklin twp. in 1830; Rutland twp. in 1840 and settled in Charleston by 1850. Alexander Cummings was a miller in Charleston when he died in 1857.

Benjamin Cummings, Sr. & Sarah (-----)
Benj. Cummings originating 1788 in Orange co., N.Y. migrated to Tioga co., Pa. descendants settled primarily in and around Mitchell Creek, Lawrence township area.

Daniel & Elizabeth (Colvin) Cummings
Daniel was the renowned Distiller of Deerfield township.

Dwight & Sally (Wormer) Cummings
This Cummings line are descendants of William & Rhoda (Barrows) of Tolland co., CT. Dwight was a 'native of Cayuga co., N.Y.' coming to Tioga co. in 1856, rented a farm in Chatham twp. for a year, then settling in Middlebury.

Jacob & Mary (Franklin) Comins/Cummings
This Cummings line originates with John Comins (ca. 1668-1751) and his wife Mary, of Woburn and Oxford Massachusetts and Windham County, Connecticut, aka 'Woburn John.' This Cummings line is most associated on the Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Site with Wells twp., Bradford co. as identified by J. Kelsey Jones. Jacob & Mary, however, moved into Rutland township by 1840, Jacob died in Rutland April 30th 1844. Daughters of this Cummings line married MOORE, BLY, and OSGOOD.

John & Sally (Covell) Cummings
While I have accumulated a sufficient amount of data to determine that certain individuals belong to this line as opposed to another Cummings line, I believe that Marjorie Oi would be considered the expert of this line.

Miss Mary Cummings, Register & Recorder in Tioga Co.
Miss Mary Cummings was the d/o of James W. Cummings, of the Cummings line descended from Isaac Cummings of Ipswich, Mass. Mr. Barry Moravek of the Isaac Cummings Family Association would be considered the expert of this line.

Silas Cummings, Sr. & Mary R. (Barber) < http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/cummings.htm >
Mary states on Silas' death record that he was born in Orange co., N.Y. the s/o "John & Sallie Cummings." Not the same John & Sallie (Covell) Cummings of Ridgebury twp., Bradford co. who came from Butternuts, Otsego co., N.Y. At this time I have exhausted three John Cummings' in Orange co. without successfully identifying any as Silas' parents.
Attached is a descendants report for Benjamin Cummings, Sr. & Sarah (-----).

Descendants of William Cummings & Rhoda Barrows

Generation No. 1

1. William1 Cummings was born 18 Jan 1761, and died 18 May 1840. He married Rhoda Barrows 19 Feb 1784 in Mansfield, Tolland, CT1, daughter of Jabez Barrows and Martha Stow. She was born 12 Mar 1764 in Mansfield, Tolland, CT.

Notes for William Cummings:
There is apparent confusion/contention regarding whether John and Elizabeth (Whiting) Comins are the parents of this William Cummings (m. Rhoda Barrows) or the William Comins, b. 20 July 1762 who mar. (1) Jemima Wiltsie, (2) Melissa Silliman. This is evidenced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Ancestral File Number: 14R5-P3L, submitted by Thomas C. & Marsha L. Hatch (6032 S Don Carlos Dr., Taylorsville, UT 84118-2714) and Abbott Lowell Cummings, who in The Descendants of John Comins, referring to the fifth child of John & Elizabeth (Whiting) Comins, states:
"William Comins, unrecorded son, b. 20 Jul 1761; m. (1) Jemima Wiltsie, (2) Melissa Silliman. Although the birth has not been found in public recs., he is without question the son of John Comins [17] for the following reasons . . . . extensive investigation of Mansfield recs. does not reveal any connection between William, the subject of this entry, b. 1762, and a Mansfield Cummings fam. which included a contemporary "William Cummings" b. there 18 Jan. 1761, and m. to Rhoda Barrows 19 Feb. 1784, as stated in his Rev. War pension application.[833]

Biographical sketches:
ADELBERT WEST, eldest child of Nathan T. West, was born in Middlebury township, Tioga county, October 17, 1839. He attended the district schools in boyhood, and worked on the home farm until 1863, when he purchased eighty-six acres of his present farm and settled upon it. He followed farming five years, and then went to Warren county, Pennsylvania, where he worked for two years. Returning to his farm in Middlebury, he has ever since devoted his attention to agriculture, with the exception of eighteen months spent in Warren county working for the Buffalo and Warren Railroad Company. He now owns 151 acres of well-improved land. Mr. West was married in July, 1863, to Frances Cummings, a daughter of Dwight Cummings, who bore him two children, viz: Adelbert D., a farmer of Middlebury, and Katie, wife of Frank Pease, of the same township. His second wife was Marion I. Briggs, a daughter of William Briggs, of Warren county, Pennsylvania, whom he married November 23, 1867. Notes for Charles Gurdon Cummings:
Biographical sketch:
CHARLES GURDON CUMMINGS, eldest son of Dwight Cummings, was born in Cayuga county, New York, December 16, 1847. Coming to this county with his parents when about ten years of age, he worked on the homestead farm until his majority, and then began working in the lumber woods in the winter seasons, and on farms in the summer time, which he followed six years. At the end of this period he rented a farm in Middlebury township which he now owns. He worked in on shares for five years, and in August, 1880, bought the property, which embraces 116 acres. He has since purchased 349 acres more in Middlebury, and thus owns 465 acres of land. He erected his present fine home in 1888, and is one of the successful farmers of his township. Mr. Cummings married Emma J. Button, a daughter of Ralph Button, of Middlebury, November 15, 1874. Eight children have been born to this union, viz: Claude G., Earl D., George B., Roy E., Ella J., Lee W., Kate M., and William C., the last of whom died in infancy. In politics, the family affiliates with the Republicans, and Mr. Cummings is a member of the Patrons of Husbandry. He is a good example of what energy and perseverance can accomplish. Twenty years ago he was working as a farm hand, while today he is one of the largest property owners and most substantial citizens of Middlebury township.

Just in case you care about accuracy:
My Grandmother Myrtie Stratton Cummings died at age 97 in 1984. She was never "Myrtle". Her husband Earl Dwight Cummings died in 1953.

If you are not navigating this Tri-Counties Site via the left and right sidebars of the Current What's New page you are doing yourself a disservice. You can get to any place on the site easily by making yourself familiar with these subject and place topics. Try them all to be as familiar with the site's 16,000 plus pages as you can. Stop groping in the dark and take the lighted path. That's also the only way you'll find the search engines for the site or have access to the necessary messages I may leave for you. Make it easy on yourself.
