January 1, 1942

Snowed. Sonny and I went over to Ethel’s. Doris and Johnny and Ada and Andy and Lewis’ folks was there.

January 2. I sent Ross a birthday card and $5.00 to Charles Ross for automobile insurance, and $4.00 to old American Insurance Company.

January 3. Ross brought his car up to the garage and came up here a little while. I baked 2 pies, a cake. I gave Ross a piece of pie. I sent Harriet a letter and Nellie a card.

January 4. We had 5 or 6 inches of snow. I put chains on and we went to church. Then went down to Ross’s to dinner.

January 5. Cold. I washed. Wrote to Lula. Got a receipt from Charles Ross Insurance.

January 6. Awful cold.

January 7. Alfred Finnerty’s birthday. Two years old. Still cold.

January 8. I sent for my drivers license and sent an order to Montgomery. Awful cold.

January 9. Awful cold. Got a letter from Lula.

January 10. Awful cold yet. Sonny went down to the barn and said I had three flat tires. Daryl fixed them for me.

January 11. I didn’t get to church it was so cold and Daryl hadn’t got the tires back on the car.

Ross and Florence came towards night.

January 12. Ruth stopped. Not so cold. I washed. Got a letter from Ruth. Sent Sonny’s artics back. Sent a card to Ethel and Doris a letter to Lula. I fell and hurt my chest.

January 13. I wrote to Nellie. I ironed and patched. Lula and Ada and Clarence came up to see how I was at night. I was awful lame.

January 14. I got a letter from Harriet. I was still lame and sore.

January 15. I got ready to go to Nellie’s with Ruth but she didn’t stop. Still lame.

January 16. I wrote to Harriet and Ethel to tell her I got hurt.

January 17. I baked pumpkin pies and mopped. Sent Jeanette a birthday card.

January 18. We went to church. Lula and Ada and Clarence came up to dinner.

January 19. Jeanette’s birthday. So lame and sore I didn’t wash. Sent Lula a birthday card.

January 20. Lula’s birthday. So lame I couldn’t wash. I sent Nellie and Ethel a card. Lula and Ross and Florence came up toward night. I got a letter from Ethel and one from Ada.

January 21. Nellie came down and ate dinner with me. Rode down with Bertha. I answered Ada A. letter.

January 22. My side was some better.
January 23. Warm. No snow. I went down to Lula’s and stopped got my groceries then came home.

January 24. Warm day. I mopped and swept upstairs.

January 25. Same. We went to church. Ross and Florence and Lula came up. Commenced to snow.

January 26. The ground was white in morning. I washed. Sent Ross a card.

January 27. Warm, the snow all went. I ironed and patched.

January 28. Colder. The ground was white again. I wrote to Nellie.

January 29. I got a letter from Nellie and one from Ethel. I went down to Ernest’s to see the mail man about green stamp. Came home and wrote to Ethel. Went to store.

January 30.

January 31. I got ready to go to Elmira but it rained so hard I sent by Gertrude and came back home.

I got my green stamp for my car. My check came. We went up to Lew’s and got it cashed. Ernest cut Sonny’s hair.

February 1. We went to church. Went up again to the sing. Stopped to Ernest’s when we came back.

February 2. I sent the balance of my car insurance to Charles Ross. Sent Ada A. a birthday card and Lula a card.

February 3. I ironed. Sent an order to Montgomery and got a card from Ada W. Marian’s baby boy was born.

February 4. Betty came up before school to tell me Marian had a baby boy. I sent a card to Ada Ward and Ada A. and Nellie.

February 5. Deep snow. Had to make paths. Got a Valentine Card from Doris.

February 6. I went to Elmira. Ate dinner with Ross. Lula was there. We went to the hospital to see Marian.

February 7. It snowed all day. Drifted my driveway full, road too. Ed couldn’t get up hill.

February 8. Ross and Florence and Lula came up to dinner. Couldn’t get their car only just this side of Vern’s, had to walk up.

February 9. No school. I sent Doris a Valentine Card and Sonny and I fixed Sonny’s snow pants. So cold I didn’t wash.

February 10. I washed.

February 11. I wrote a letter to Nellie. Sonny sent Jeanette and Helen a Valentine and one to Lorraine and Helene.

February 12. Sonny and I got a Valentine Card from Ross and Florence and sent one to Ethel and one to Lula. Went down to the barn and saw I had flat tires again.

February 13. I sent Ada A. a letter and Valentine Card.

February 14. Raymond’s folks came to dinner.

February 15. Lula and Ada and Clarence came up to dinner. He shoveled out my driveway.

February 16. Delano Freeman was buried. I went to the funeral stopped to Ern’s.

February 17. I wrote to Ethel and ironed and patched.

February 18. I got a letter from Nellie, she was worse again.

February 19. Awful cold.

February 20. Awful cold. I wrote to Nellie.

February 21. Colder. Daryl came up, I sent by them for groceries. Betty and Pauline brought them up.

February 22. Raymond’s folks came to dinner. Couldn’t get my car out so didn’t get to church. Daryl came up and opened up the driveway. Ernest came up about an hour at night.

February 23. Mail didn’t come. I washed.

February 24. I sent an order to Montgomery and my insurance to Charles Ross. I got a letter from Mr. &

Mrs. Knight.

February 25. I got a card from Jeanette that Nellie was worse.

February 26. I wrote to Nellie, sent a card to Ethel.

February 27. I mopped and did my Saturday work so I could go to Elmira on Saturday.

February 28. Went down to Ernest’s and got my check and went to Elmira to Lula’s to dinner. Got my groceries and came home. Got a letter from Jeanette, one from Ethel. Nellie wasn’t any better.

March 1. Sunday. Went to church came home to dinner then went over to see Nellie, she wasn’t any better. Ada and Lula came over there. Lula rode back with me and Ada came just as we got back.

March 2. I washed. Took the car down for Ernest to fix spark plugs.
March 3. No school. So much snow. There came about 1 foot of snow and still snowing. I went out and made paths. Sent for my license plates and wrote letter to Ethel.

March 4. No school. Betty brought the mail up. I got a letter from Jeanette, Nellie wasn’t any better.

March 5. No school. Betty brought the mail up. We shoveled a path to the barn. Warmer.

March 6. Betty brought the mail up. I got a card from Nellie, she was better.

March 7. Betty’s birthday. Betty brought the mail up. I mopped and swept upstairs. Warm—thawing.

March 8. Another warm day. We walked down to Ernest’s rode up to Corners to church. Rode back with preacher. Lula and Ada and Clarence came up. Daryl and Clarence shoveled out the driveway.

March 9. I washed. Went down to Ernest’s to see the mail man, he had gone. Sent for my license plates. He came back down the hill the first time in a week.

March 10. Colder. I went down to Sam Brastard’s with Meryle and Bessie to have a deed made out for the land across the creek but didn’t get it done.

March 11. Sent an order to Montgomery.

March 12. I got a letter from Ethel. I went up to Eliza’s to the Women’s Meeting.

March 13. I got a letter from Nellie, she wasn’t any better. I done my Saturday work so I could go over and see her.

March 14. We went over to Nellie. She was a little better.

March 15. Ethel’s birthday. We went to church. Raymond’s folks came just as we got home.

March 16. My license plate came. I washed. Sonny didn’t go to school, he said he was sick but he wasn’t. The first time he didn’t want to go to school.

March 17. I put my new license plates on the car. Got a letter from Lula. Went down to Ern’s a little while. Gladys and Bill came up towards night.

March 18. Sonny came home sick. Lula and Ada came up a while in the evening.

March 19. Sonny didn’t feel like going to school. I read most all day. I got a letter from Ethel, Lewis had moved back.

March 20. I did my Saturday work.

March 21. We went to Elmira and went over town with Ada W. I got a letter from Nellie, she was a little better.

March 22. We went to church. Lula and Ada and Clarence went up to see Nellie. They called when they went back. Awful blustery.

March 23. Awful blustery. I took Sonny to school and washed. I sent an order to Walter Field.

March 24. Cold. I ironed and patched. Ernest came up after he had his supper but someone came after him as usual

March 25. Nice day. I went down to Ernest’s a while at noon.

March 26. I wrote to Nellie and Ethel. Got a card from Nellie, she wasn’t so well. Gladys and Margaret came up a while in the afternoon.

March 27. I baked cookies. I sent a card to Nellie that I would be over there Sunday and I sent Lula a card.

March 28. Gladys’ birthday. I mopped and washed windows. Went to the store, stopped to Ern’s sent for groceries by them.

March 29. We went to church then went over to see how Nellie was. We got back Ross and Florence and Lula was to Ernest’s. They came up here a while. It snowed most all night.

March 30. The snow was all gone by night. I washed. Gladys came up a while after school, I gave her birthday present.

March 31. Snowed most all day. I got a letter from Ethel. I sent some Valentine Cards. Jerome Eighmey

died.

April 1. The ground was white with snow again. I sent Easter Card and letter to Nellie and one to Ethel.

April 2. I went down to Lula’s we went over to Ada to dinner. I got my groceries, came back and stopped and got two bags of coal.

April 3. Jerome Eighmey was buried. I went to the funeral and sent Doris and brother Andrew an Easter Card. Went up to Lew Smith’s got gas and sugar.

April 4. I baked pumpkin pies and mopped. Got a card from Ada that they would be up Sunday. Raymond’s folks came in the afternoon a while.

April 5. Easter Sunday. We went to church then Ada and Clarence and Lula came up to dinner. We went down to Sam Brasteds with Ernest to get his birth certificate. Betty and Gladys stayed up here all night.

April 6. Raymond’s folks came before breakfast to fix his car. I took him to Elmira after parts.

Betty and Gladys stayed all night.

April 7. I washed. Gladys and Betty stayed up here all night.

April 8. I went over to Ethel’s, got a letter from Nellie. Couldn’t get my car in gear. Had to call Raymond

before I could come home. Betty and Gladys stayed all night again.

April 9. Ironed. Sonny came home with the measles. I wrote to Nellie.

April 10. I wrote a card to Ethel.

April 11. Raymond’s folks came about 12 and stayed all night.

April 12. Sunday. Raymond was here so we didn’t go to church. Lula and Ross and Florence came after dinner. Raymond’s went home.

April 13. Raymond’s folks came again to fix his car. I washed.

April 14. I went to Elmira with Ruth and Nellie. We ate dinner with Lula. I got Sonny’s shoes—high.

April 15. I went down again with Ruth and Nellie after Nellie’s glasses.

April 16. I went up to Corners to watch airplanes. Came back went to Seeley Creek after coal.

April 17. I raked off my posie beds and carried over a lot of wood from the creek.

April 18. I mopped and cleaned pantry shelves.

April 19. We went to church. The preacher didn’t come, we had Sunday School. No one came here.

April 20. I washed. Lewis McClure came, said he had an accident. I sent a line down by him to Lula.

April 21. I ironed and patched, wrote to Ada A. and sent a card to Dorothy in the hospital.

April 22. Warmer. I fixed my coal bin. Wrote to Ethel but the mail went before I got it wrote.
April 23. Margaret and Gladys and Betty came up, brought me two pair of shoes. Sonny had the earache all night.

April 24. We went down to Lula’s then went down to Ross’s to dinner. Got some groceries. Went over to Ada’s then came home.

April 25. Mary’s sale, we went after dinner.

April 26. We went to church then came home, ate dinner, then went down to Lula’s. We all went up to Andy’s. Raymond came while we was gone, broke the door open.

April 27. I washed. Henry stopped and said Nellie was worse and had to go to hospital to Sayre.

April 28. I went over to see Nellie. I sent a card to Ethel and one to Lula.

April 29. I ironed, got a letter from Ethel that they had to move.

April 30. My check came. I fixed my chair cushion. Ruth and Gene stopped and said Nellie wasn’t going to the hospital now.

May 1. I went to Elmira with Ruth and Nellie and Gene. Got my check cashed, got Sonny some clothes and me a dress.

May 2. We went up to the Corners to a church meeting.

May 3. We went to church. Raymond’s was here when we got back. Mrs. Baker went with us.

May 4. I washed.

May 5. I ironed and patched. Took the matress off the spare bed upstairs, put my new one on. We mowed the lawn the first time this year. Went down to the hall to register for sugar. I got a letter from Nellie.

May 6. I washed the kitchen windows and pantry. Carried hay from the barn to put in the straw bed so could give Ethel the mattress. Picked some pie plant for the first.

May 7. Went down to Ross’s to dinner. Stopped to Ada’s, she wasn’t home. Got some groceries. Got a card from Doris, wants me to go over to Allie’s to meet them.

May 8. I wrote to Ross asking them to wait till the next Sunday so I could go over and see Doris. I wrote to Nellie.

May 9. I mopped and went to store to get sugar. Stopped to Ern’s. Meryle dragged the garden, I planted some of it.

May 10. I went to church then went over to Ethel’s to see Doris. Took her mattress over and pillow.

Mrs. Baker went to church with me. It froze ice at night.

May 11. I washed, Ada came up a while in the morning.

May 12. I ironed and finished planting my garden.

May 13. Went to Millerton to register for gas; got 8 gallons gas to Dick Smiths.

May 14. Wrote card to Ada W. that we wouldn’t be down till Saturday. Went up to Corners to watch airplanes. Went to the women’s meeting. Ross and Florence came up at night brought some ice cream. Sonny was sick all night.

May 15. Sonny was sick and didn’t go to school. I was sick too, I had the grippe.

May 16. We went to Elmira. Went to Ada’s she wasn’t home. Went over to Ross’ a while then went over town.

May 17. We went to church. Raymond’s was here when we got home. We went down to Ernest’s after they went.

May 18. Sonny didn’t want to go to school; bawled and the teacher thought he was sick and sent him home. Made him go to bed. He knew he wasn’t sick. Delos and Ernest came up at night, he run and played every minute. Mowed the lawn again, Delos helped me.

May 19. My coal came. Sonny didn’t want to go to school again; I told him to go to school or go to bed. He went to bed again. Delos’ birthday. I got a letter from Ethel.

May 20. Sonny commenced to bawl again, didn’t want to go to school. So, I told him I would pack his clothes and take him down to his mother. I come inside to pack them and he went.

I wrote to Ethel. Raymond’s folks came stayed all night.

May 21. Raymond’s went home, I washed windows up stair in the spare room and cleaned it. Rained all day.

May 22. Rainy day again. I sent Ada W. a letter. Cleaned my bedroom and washed windows. I got a card from Lula saying they would be up Sunday to go to Mansfield Cemetery.

May 23. I baked two rubarb pies and mopped and cleaned the other room.

May 24. Ross, Florence, Lula came up, we went to the cemeteries, the went to Bloss, then went to see Nellie, then came home.

May 25. No school. I washed.

May 26. I ironed and patched. Ada and Clarence came up for me to go and sign a birth certificate. Came back and went up to Lew Smith’s for gas and sugar.

May 27. I sent Helen a card.

May 28. Helen’s birthday 7 years old. I went to the Corners to watch airplanes but didn’t have, so I helped clean the church. Stopped to see Marian and Billy.

May 29. I washed windows in the parlor, cleaned it. Cultivated my peas.

May 30. Decoration Day. I washed windows and mopped. Raymond’s came to dinner.

May 31. We went to church. They dedicated the trees we set out and the Sunday School room. We went down to Ernest’s after dinner.

June 1. My check came, I washed, cultivated garden, mowed some of the lawn.

June 2. Ada came up early. Said Clarence was drafted. Raymond’s came after some money. I planted some more corn. Cultivated my potatoes.

June 3. Wrote to Ethel. Got a birthday card from Helen, a letter from Nellie. I ironed the curtains and put them up. Got Sonny’s rubbers ready to send back.

June 4. We went down to Ada’s. I went over town with her, ate dinner with her, then went over to Ross’ a while. Then went to Lula’s stayed all night. Looked for Raymond but he didn’t come as he said he would.

June 5. Took Lula to her work then went to Ross’. Stayed till after dinner then went back to Ada’s got my groceries came home. Got most up to Pine City and my car stopped. I called Ernest to come and get me.

June 6. Ernest fixed the car and brought it up. Cost me $8.30.

June 7. Ernest cut Sonny’s hair. We went to church and went down to Ernest’s after dinner. Gertrude and Lewis, Margaret, Daryl, Delos went to Auburn to see her Aunt Jen.

June 8. I washed.

June 9. I ironed and patched, mowed some of the lawn.

June 10. Nellie and Ruth and Helen came over to dinner. I cleaned this cupboard and cabinet.

June 11. Cultivated my garden, went up the to Corners to women’s meeting afternoon.

June 12. I washed the blankets of Sonny’s bed and mine. Changed sleeping places.

June 13. We went over to Roseville to Sunday School Convention.

June 14. We went to church. Went down to Ernest’s and Ross was there; they came up a while.

June 15. Washed, wrote a letter to Ethel and Lula. Cultivated my garden.

June 16. We went over to Nellie’s and stayed all night.

June 17. We came home towards night.

June 18. Ross brought his car up the garage and came over here and ate his dinner. I baked pie and cake and mowed the lawn.
June 19. Sent a card to Ethel.

June 20. We went down to Ada’s, she wasn’t home. We went over to Ross’ and rode around with him to deliver clothes. Ate dinner with them, went back to Ada then went and got our groceries and went to Lula’s, she came home with me.

June 21. Ross’ folks came up to dinner. Thought they was coming early so we didn’t go to church. They stopped to Ernest’s didn’t get here till after two o’clock. Ross fixed his brakes.

June 22. I washed, cultivated some garden. Sent for my $5.00 stamp for my car.

June 23. I ironed and patched, got my stamp for my car.

June 24. I hoed my corn. Went over to Ethel’s stayed all night.

June 25. Went over to Harkness’ afternoon, stayed to see Raymond. He said he would be over Saturday night. Mowed the lawn when I got home.

June 26.

June 27. Raymond’s came, we all went to Tioga Junction. They stayed all night.

June 28. Raymond’s was here so we didn’t go to church, we went down to the Park after dinner. Then we went up to Andy’s to supper. Then went to the picture show then came home. They stayed all night again. They went to Elmira, got a job on a farm to Westfield. They went Monday towards night.

June29. I washed. They went to Elmira and got a job on a farm to Westfield; went that night.

June 30. I ironed. Sawed the limbs off the pear tree. Took up some flowers. Got ready for the coal man but didn’t come.

July 1. Went down to Ada’s to help her clean house, stayed all night.

July 2. Went over to Lula’s toward night, got my groceries and came home.

July 3. I wrote to Ethel and Nellie. I sent $6.00 for my paper for one year.

July 4. No mail. We had a hard shower towards night.

July 5. We went to church and Raymond’s folks came to dinner. We went down to Ern’s, Ross was there, they came up here a while. We had a hard shower in the night.

July 6. I washed . Ada and Clarence came to dinner, Gene’s folks stopped while they was here. It rained awful hard.

July 7. Real cool, some frost in the morning.

July 8. Ross and Florence came to dinner; he took his car over to garage. Margaret and Daryl picked his (Daryl’s ) peas.

July 9. Gertrude and I went to Nellie’s to paper. I stopped and gave Alta and Mrs. Doty a quarterly.

July 10. I got a letter from Ethel that Allie had another bad spell.

July 11. I went over to Millerton to register for gasoline then went up to Winners to get my car inspected. Waited to Eliza’s.

July 12. Went to church and went over to see how Allie was. Stopped to Ernest’s when we came home.

July 13. I washed. Forget to send Helene birthday card. Newman Benson died.

July 14. Helene’s birthday. I sent her a card and went down to Ernest’s and got 5 gallon of oil and went to the store.

July 15. Swept upstairs and wrote to Marie and Horace. Newman Benson was buried.

July 16. Washed these windows, Betty and Ernest came up a while.

July 17. It thundered and rained most all night. We went down to Ada’s then went to Ross’ to dinner. Went over to the plant with Ross. We went to meet Lula, then got our groceries and came home.

July 18. I mowed the lawn and mopped and read.

July 19. We went to church and Sunday School. Ada and Clarence and Lula came up to dinner.

July 20. Monday. I washed. Got a card from the coal man that he would be here August 1.

July 21. I ironed and patched and read.

July 22. Read most of the day.

July 23. I got a letter from Nellie and one from Ethel; answered them both.

July 24. Marian came down home. Betty brought Billy up. Sent Ethel and Nellie a letter.

July 25. I read in the paper Ross’ name that he was drafted in the Army.

July 26. Went to church. Ross’ folks came to dinner. We all went down to Ernest’s a while.

July 27. I washed. Sent a card to Nellie and one to Ethel about Ross being drafted. Mowed the lawn.
July 28. Ross went to Binghamton for examination. He didn’t pass. I went down to find out, stopped and told Ada and took Lula home.

July 29. We went over to Nellie’s.

July 30. I got a letter from Ethel.

July 31. I sent a card to Ethel. Mowed the lawn again. Ernest and Gertrude was up a while.

August 1. I mopped, got ready for company. Betty brought little Billy up.

August 2. We went to church. Lula and Ada and Clarence came up to dinner. We went down to Ernest’s after they went home. Raymond’s came while we was to church but didn’t stay.

August 3. I washed.

August 4. I ironed and patched.

August 5. I wrote to Ethel.

August 6. Freddie’s birthday. Ruth’s baby was born. Nellie called me, I went over and stayed till Saturday afternoon.

August 7. Was to Nellie’s.

August 8. Came home from Nellie’s. Picked my cucumbers and mowed lawn.

August 9. We went to church. Went down to Ernest’s after dinner to see Marian and Billy.

August 10. I washed.

August 11. I ironed. Got a letter from Ethel and $5.00 from Lewis McClure.

August 12. I wrote to Ethel. Sent a card to Lula.

August 13. Raymond’s folks came to dinner. We all went over to Allie’s a while. Came back and stayed all night.

August 14. They went down to the employment office, came back, stayed all night.

August 15. Hazel went to the hospital about 3:30. The baby was born in the p.m. I went down with Raymond after breakfast to see how she was. Lula came home with us.

August 16. Raymond and Lorraine and Lula was here so we didn’t go to church. Raymond went down to see Hazel. Lula went down home with him.

August 17. I washed. Raymond and Lorraine went down to see Hazel, they ate dinner with Ross.

August 18. I ironed. Raymond helped Vernon thrash after dinner; we all went down to see Hazel after supper.

August 19. I washed out some things for Raymond and Lorraine.

August 20.

August 21. Sonny’s birthday. Raymond had to go to Elmira to get a piece for the car. We went with him, drove my car. Ate dinner to Ross’.

August 22. Ray Ayers was buried. Raymond and Lorraine left. I wrote to Ethel.

August 23. We went to church. Raymond and Lorraine came back Sunday night about 11 o’clock. Gene’s folks was all here to dinner. Ross and Florence came after dinner.

August 24. I washed and Raymond worked for Vernon.

August 25. I ironed and patched. Raymond worked for Vernon.

August 26.

August 27. Nellie and Jeanette and Freddie came to dinner.

August 28. I paid my road taxes and got ready for company.

August 29. We didn’t go to church. Gene’s folks and John came over to celebrate our birthday.

We went down to Ernest’s to see Marian’s baby after they went home.

August 30. No meeting. My birthday. We all went down to Ross’ to dinner, I was sick all day.

August 31. Didn’t feel good, so I didn’t wash. School commenced. My check came.

September 1. I washed and got a letter and Ruth’s baby picture in it from Nellie.

September 2. I went over to Ethel’s to help Dorothy clean Ethel’s kitchen after they plastered. Louise went to the hospital. I got a birthday card and breast pin from Ada Ward. Got my check cashed.

September 3. Louise’s baby boy was born. I got a birthday card from Nellie and Ruth and got a letter from Ada and Andy. I fixed some pickles and mowed the lawn.

September 4. I got a card from Lula.

September 5. We went over to Nellie’s.

September 6. We went to church and went up to Raymond’s towards night. Stayed to supper.

September 7. I washed. Margaret and Ernie came up a while.

September 8. I ironed and patched. My coal came.

September 9. I canned chunk pickles and little cucumber pickles.

September 10. I went up to the Corners to the women’s meeting.

September 11. I got a letter from Ada W. and one from Ada A.

September 12. We went down to Lula’s to dinner, then we all went down to Ada’s and then to Ross’, then came home, got my groceries.

September 13. Commenced revival meetings. Miss Brained preached. We went to church. Mrs. Baker went with us.

September 14. I washed. Margaret and Ernie was up a while.

September 15. I ironed and patched. Went to church at night, Betty went with us.

September 16. I wrote to Ada A. Got a letter from Ethel they would be here Sunday. Raymond’s came down a little while so we didn’t go to church.

September 17. I answered Ethel’s letter and got a letter from Ada W. Gene’s folks stopped when they came back from Elmira. We went to church. Margaret and Ernie was up a while.

September 18. I finished digging my potatoes. Went to church at night.

September 19. Got ready for company. Margaret and Ernie was up a while after noon. Went to church at night.

September 20. Had company. Ethel, Allie, Doris, Johnny, Ada and Andy was here to dinner. Raymond’s came down after some stove pipe and cans. Afternoon we went to church.

September 21. I wrote a card to Ross to come up and fix my back steps. We went up to Raymond’s after school. Ross and Florence came while we was gone.

September 22. I wrote another letter to Ross telling him not to come Sunday to fix my steps. I emptied the big oil can to send down to Ross. We went to church at night.

September 23. I canned tomatoes and got up to Raymond’s. We went to church at night. Raymond was down helping fill Vernon’s silo.

September 24. I wrote to Lula. Cut some of my sweet corn.

September 25. They finished filling Vernon’s silo, I cut the rest of my sweet corn.

September 26. Mrs. Gardner died. I baked 3 pumpkin pies and an apple cake. Daryl’s birthday.

September 27. We went to church. Miss Brainard’s last Sunday. Raymond’s folks came down to dinner. Rained all day. We went to church at night.

September28. I washed. Went down to store. Paid my taxes.

September 29. I ironed, went to Mrs. Gardner’s funeral and visited the school.

September 30. Picked up scrap for the war.

October 1. Went down to Lula’s then we went up to Andy’s to see him about fixing my back steps. Got Sonny’s trycicle.

October 2. I wrote to Ada Ward and fixed a plank in my back steps.

October 3. We went up to Raymond’s after dinner. I got a letter from Ethel. I got two jugs water, my valve went bad.

October 4. We went to church then went down to Ernest’s. Raymond called and I went down below Pine City and towed them home. They drove my car home and left theirs here.

October 5. I washed. Raymond’s came down at night but didn’t get his car fixed; had to drive mine home again. Nellie brought me a valve but it was too small.

October 6. Daryl couldn’t get a valve to Millerton so I didn’t get any water yet. Nor Raymond didn’t get his car started yet.

October 7. Andy and Ada and Lula came and fixed my back step. Ernest got me a valve to Elmira. Daryl put it in the pump. Raymond couldn’t get his car started yet.

October 8. Raymond’s folks came down in the morning and got their car started and went to Elmira. I went up to the Corners to the women’s meeting.

October 9. I fixed my steps wider.

October 10. I mopped. Cut the hollyhocks back of the house. Canned some pears.

October 11. We went to church. Went down to Ernest’s got Sonny’s hair cut. Raymond’s folks came so we went home.

October 12. I washed, canned some pears.

October 13. I ironed and patched, then went to the Corners. Mrs. Sedinger and I went to see Bertha Webster and made some other calls.

October 14. I went to Elmira and went to see Lula about an hour. Got a letter from Nellie.

October 15. I picked up some more scrap. Ada and Clarence came up and paid me $5.00. I got a letter from Ethel.

October 16.

October 17. Went up to Corners Church to Sunday School Convention. Sonny went up to Raymond’s.

October 18. Went to church, Raymond’s to dinner. We went down to Ernest’s after they went. Ada’s birthday.

October 19. I washed. Marian’s birthday. Margaret and Ernie called.

October 20. I ironed and patched. Mrs. Barnes and Johnny called. Got a letter from Ada A.

October 21. Raymond’s came down and went to Elmira and Painted Post; got a job in a creamery. Stopped when they came back.

October 22. Sam Allen was buried. Ernest came up and got the car and fixed it.

October 23. Sonny and I went up to Raymond’s. Helped Hazel pack her dishes and fruit cans. Stayed till supper.

October 24. We went over to Nellie’s. Raymond’s folks was down at night.

October 25. We went to church. It was Ernest’s and Gertrude’s wedding anniversary. We went down there to dinner, Ross and Florence and Lula came up to dinner. They came up here towards night.

October 26. I washed. It rained and turned to snow. I sent a card to Ethel.

October 27. Cold. I ironed and patched. Ernest came up a few minutes and said he got my spark plugs. Warren Stevens came after him to fix the school bus.

October 28. The school kids had Halloween Party. I went down to Ernest’s to get spark plugs put in the car.

October 29. We went up to Raymond’s then over to Ethel’s and Doris’.

October 30. I wrote a card to Lula and Ross that I couldn’t come down Saturday being it was Halloween. Raymond sent word for me to come up. They come and got his car. He wanted mine to get some groceries.

October 31. Raymond and Lorraine came down to Big Flats to see about getting a job.

November 1. It rained. We went to church. Went up to Raymond’s after we got home to dinner.

November 2. I washed. Wrote a letter to Nellie.

November 3. Election. I ironed and patched and wrote a letter to Ada A.
November 4. I took Raymond’s folks to Elmira to look for a job. Saw Lula a few minutes; Raymond drove the car home.

November 5. Lawrence Smith tax assessor called.

November 6. I went up to Raymond’s then we went to Elmira. Had my tooth pulled. Ray got his job drawing milk.

November 7. Raymond commenced work. Rode down with Floyd Sheive. I took Hazel and kids and things down.

November 8. Lewis and Daryl moved Ray’s things down here. I didn’t go to church, was sorry I couldn’t. November 9. I washed.
November 10. I ironed. Went down to Raymond’s, took him to Troy.

November 11. Armistice Day. No mail. I drawed the water out of my car and put in Prestone.

November 12. Cold. The ground was white with snow. I wrote to Ethel.

November 13. I wrote to Marie and Horace, sent Daryl’s picture. Got a letter from Ada A.

November 14. We went down to Raymond’s to dinner then went over to Lula’s. Then we all went down to Ross’ a while; I got groceries and came home.

November 15. Cold. We went to church. The car wouldn’t start again, had to pour hot water on it again.

November 16. I washed. Gene’s folks came over in the evening.

November 17. I ironed; washed the kitchen windows.

November 19. Ada and Andy came a while towards night after the big kettle.

November 20.

November 21. We went down to Raymond’s; Sonny stayed there. I went to Lula’s a few minutes, I stayed with baby while they went over town.

November 22. Rollin Gaige was home on furlough. We went to church, went down to Ernest in afternoon. Made out my paper for gasoline.

November 23. Went to Elmira with Ernest and Gertrude, got some pails so I didn’t wash.

November 24. I washed. Sent my tire numbers to Wellsboro. Sent a card to Ross.

November 25. I ironed and patched. Got a Thanksgiving card from brother Sam.

November 26. Thanksgiving Day. WE went over to Lewis McClure’s for dinner. Ethel and Doris and Johnny was there; they give us some squirrels.

November 27. I sent Sam and Myrtle a Christmas card. Cut out me an apron and made it.

November 28. I baked pie and cake and mopped. Betty came up and said Ernest wanted me to come down Sunday and eat dinner with him. Sunday was his birthday he was 46 years old.

November 29. Ernest’s birthday. We went to church then went down to Ernest’s for dinner.

November 30. I washed. I bought stamps; 10 of Sonny, 5 of Delos, and 5 of Betty. Sent my tire paper back to Wellsboro.

December 1. I went up to Lew Smith’s got my check cashed and stopped and paid Lewis $22.50 for coal. Lewis was hunting so paid it to Margaret.

December 2. Awful cold. I put the roofing on the screen door to the kitchen.

December 3. I wrote to Ethel and Ada W. Cleaned and straightened the parlor.

December 4. Cold. I swept upstair.

December 5. Some warmer. We went down to Raymond’s then went over to Ross’ for dinner; then went to see Lula a while. Then came back to Raymonds and came home.

December 6. We started to church met Gene’s folks and came back. Went down to Ernest’s got Sonny’s hair cut. Our preacher felt bad because Hamilton’s didn’t ask him to preach their girl’s funeral sermon.

December 7. I washed. Ada Ward came, stayed to dinner with me; Clarence was hunting.

December 8. Lewis’ birthday. I ironed. Margaret and Ernie came up a while in afternoon. I covered the cellar hatchway and put the roofing on the other room door and the parlor door.

December 9. Went down to Elmira, stopped to Raymond’s. Went over town and got 5 quarts of milk and a lot of groceries.

December 10. I wrote a letter to Nellie and a card to Ethel, one to Jeanette. Was sick all day. Ernest and Gertrude came up at night to see how I was.

December 11. Charles Ross came and insured my car again. I went up to Winners and got my car inspected. Went down to Mosherville had the tires inspected; Winner didn’t do it.

December 12. Lorraine’s birthday. I baked an apple grunt, a mince pie and mopped. My automobile insurance policy came.

December 13. We went to church. Only had Sunday School. Wrote Christmas cards afternoon. When we got up we found a lot of snow on the ground.

December 14. Cold. Sonny had such a bad cold he didn’t go to school. I didn’t wash. I sent 10 Christmas cards.

December 15. I washed. Sent some more cards to Lula and Ada. Sonny didn’t go to school.

December 16. I ironed. Made Nellie an apron. Sent Horace and Marie a Christmas card.

December 17. I went up to Corners to the women’s meeting. Stopped to Ernest when came back. Had to open up the driveway before I went; put on chains. I got a card from Ethel and Allie and brother Sam.

December 18. Sonny didn’t go to school. Got a letter and card from Lula and Myrtle, a card from Mary.

December 19. We went to Raymonds, then to Lula’s then over town. Couldn’t get gas.

December 20. So cold we didn’t go to church so I done up Christmas presents. Awful cold.

December 21. I washed, sent some Christmas cards and a box to Nellie and Dorothy. Got some Christmas cards, one from Ada and Andy.

December 22. I ironed. Got a package from Nellie and a letter saying she was sick again. Got a card from Ross and Florence and one from Lewis and Margaret and one from Helen.

December 23. I wrote to Nellie and sent a birthday card and sent one to Ross. Got card from Mr. & Mrs. Knight, Blanche Sheive and Maude Eighmey, one from Ada and Clarence, one from Betty Lou and Lula and Hazel a postal card about coming Christmas.
December 24. Nellie’s birthday. I went down and got Raymond’s folks. Stopped and got 6 gallon gas.

December 25. We just got through breakfast and Ross and Florence and Lula came for breakfast. Raymond was mad but they rode down home with them.

December 26. Ada and Clarence came up to dinner. I sent Ruth a birthday card.

December 27. Ruth’s birthday. We had our Christmas exercises up to the Corners. Betty went up with us. Ross was to Ernest’s when we came back; he came up here to dinner. It rained all night.

We went down and got the rest of my kerosene oil to Shopes.

December 28. I washed. It rained all night again. I sent Raymond a birthday card.

December 29. Ray’s birthday. Still raining. I wrote to Ethel. The mail went before I got it ready.

December 30. Still raining. I went down to Ernest’s to see about sending my oil paper back so as to get more kerosene oil.

December 31. No school. Betty and Delos and Ernie came up a while. Delos shoveled out the driveway.

THORP –MARIAN ALICE THORP AVERY, 74, of Burlington, Troy RR 3, formerly of Daggett, Pa., left the loving arms of her family to be with the Lord early Sunday morning, Jan. 22, 1995, at her home.  Born the second of six children Oct. 19, 1920 in Wells Township, Bradford Co., Pa., she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Gertrude Wells Thorp.  Marian devoted her life to her family.  She enjoyed gardening in earlier years and quilting for her children and grandchildren until the time of her death.  She is survived by: her devoted husband of 55 years, William G. Avery Sr., at home; a son and daughter-in-law, William and JoAnn Avery Jr. of Gillett; three daughters and sons-in-law; Catherine and Rodney Clark of Neshanic Station, N.J., Alice and Leon Mosher Sr. of Laceyville, and Carol and Steven Jenkins of Columbia Cross Roads; a daughter, Connie Huckle of Troy; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty Lou and Donald Wright of Elmira, N.Y.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Delos and Ethel Thorp of Gillett.  Also surviving are Laverne and Beverly Parmenter of Milan; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; Margaret Thorp of the Green Home, Wellsboro and Carolyn Thorp of Millerton, Pa.; an aunt, Ruth Myers of Elmira; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was preceded in death by: two brothers; Lewis and Daryl Thorp; and a sister, Gladys Kliner.  The funeral and committal service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 24, 1995, at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Allen Hulslander, pastor of the Towanda United Methodist Church, and Rev. Kermit Shrawder, pastor of the Burlington United Methodist Church, officiating.  Interment will be in the Roseville (Watson) Cemetery, Roseville, Pa.  There are no calling hours.  Flowers will be provided by the family.  It was Marian’s request that memorials be directed to: The Geisinger Medical Center, Hematology Department, Danville, Pa., Guthrie Hospice, Towanda, Pa. or The House of Care, Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Pa in her memory.  –Towanda Daily Review.
