January 1, 1881 – Thermometer 27 degrees below zero. Mr. Francis Campbell and Miss Jane Brown married Dec. 29th, 1880.

Jan. 7 – Fan bust and threw 2 pieces of ¼ X 12 in square Boiler Iron across the factory and through the side of it.

May 6 – Work in house, finish capenter work. Have been changing stairs and partitions.

May 18 – Isadore & self at Towanda, buy oil & lead to paint home of H. C. Porter. Lead 7 ½ c, Oil 57 c, and freight from NY.

June 6 – Yearly meeting of School directors, re-elect secretary of the Board, father re-elected treasurer

June 11 – Work in mill. A total eclipse of the moon at about midnight.

June 17 – Work in mill & go to Smithfield. Receive on church debt #110.

June 18 – At Towanda, Lee & Cora Riggs along.

June 22 – Work in mill. Have view of House taken, a general view and a family group.

July 1 – Lee & self go to Williamsport

July 2 – We return from WmsPort. Reach home 2 AM the third. Reported today that President Garfield was shot at the Baltimore & Ohio RR Depot in Washington, fears are entertained that it will prove fatal.

July 4 – Isadore-Carrie & self at Smithfield to see Rag Muffins tub race – fire works - & balloon assention.

July 5, 6, 7

July 8 – Visiting Mr. & Mrs. Geo. T. Beach, J. L. King, Mrs. L. T. Adams, Clair, pleasant visit.

July 9, 10, 11, 12, 13

July 14 – At Mountain Lake with Lee fishing.

July 20 – Isadore & Carrie go with me to see Hester, get there at 3:30 PM. Help Bernch (sp?) hay.

July 22 – Come home, stop in Waverly, have photographs taken.

Aug. 21 – (Sunday) Stay at home and fight fire.

Aug. 26 – Miss Olive Keeler and Will Carpenter married.

Aug. 27 – Work on bath tub and at Smithfield.

Aug. 30 – Work in mill & fight fire. Blow the whistle for help. Daniel Bailey died.

Sept. 3 – Work in mill & factory – at Smithfield to caucus in afternoon.

Sept. 7 – Isadore, Carrie and self at Flemmingville, NY, Tioga Co., at marriage of A. T. Wheat and Rhoda Pritchard, pleasant visit. Call on Mr. & Mrs. Clarence & ???? Walters.

Sept. 15 – Take Mr. & Mrs. Wheat to Ulster – work in factory.

Sept. 19 – At Troy for lime to plaster house where Baker lives. President James A. Garfield died.

Sept. 26 – Attend the Garfield Memorial Service at Smithfield, Garfield buried today at Cleveland, Ohio

Oct. 1

Oct. 2 – All at Church and Sunday School. Rev. J. L. King preaches his last sermon for this can(?) year.

Oct. 3

Oct. 4 – Work in mill and at C. B. Brigham. Carrie at N. Waldrons.

Oct. 5 – Give my note to C. B. Brigham due in 6 months at 5 per cent intrest, also give my note to Mrs. C. B. Brigham due in one year at 5 per cent interest.

Oct. 6

Oct. 7 – At Troy with B. Garrison. Buy of J. H. Grant, Troy, Pa, one stem winding open face watch 4 oz silver case, name of movement Stewart No. 51963 adjusted, Springfield Watch Co., Ill. Also father pays Hester for me #350.00, making #700.00 in all—Lee pays her #300.00. Give my note to Pomery Bros fer 50.00 due in 6 months. Note paid to Pomerys on the 20th Oct. 1881.

Oct. 31 – Sell all of my land bought of J. C. Tompkins which I now own (25 acres) for $1000.00, also give Ophelia Brigham my sister a deed of all of land South of road and west from center of Tom Jack Creek to Within 8 feet of Pine Tree, being ---- acres -----perches for $1200.00 which she agrees to take for her share as Heir at law in Mrs. & Mr. D. Bourne Estate. Sell hay in South Barn fer $110.00, watch 25.00, Amt. Due on insurance policy 4.55 = #139.55.

Nov. 1 – At Franklin=dale with W. L. Riggs at Sam’l Gilberts Sackets mills. Hire Miss May Meade to teach our school 3 months.

Nov. 9 – Miss Nettie Riggs & John Parmer (sp?) married.

Nov. 24 – All at S. L. Riggs at yearly family meeting a pleasant time.

Nov. 26 – Work in mill, Mrs. Seth Gustin died.

Nov. 30 – My Sabbath School class here viz: Miss Carrie Beach, Miss Martha Kniffin, Miss Annie Brigham, Miss Minnie Riggs, Mrs. Olive Carpenter & husband, Mrs. Mary Crawford & husband, Mrs. Nettie Parmer & husband, and Mr. & Mrs. W. L. Riggs, Mr. & Mrs. C. E. Brigham, Mr. Ellery Beach, Mr. E. L. Bourne, Mr. Dilbert Riggs. A real pleasant time. Receive a present of a wire book stand from my class, very much pleased with it.

Dec. 8 – At Towanda, Isadore along, get deeds made out for Mrs. & Mr. C. E. Brigham and deliver same. See October 30, 1887.

Dec. 9, 10, 11, 12

Dec. 13 – Work in mill. Justin Morley buried.

Dec. 14, 15, 16

Dec. 17 – At Troy to get Safe, a present of a No 5 Mosler Safe and Lock Co. Safe weighing 1400, costing #100.00. Presented by Father to Lee and I as a firm of Bourne Bros.

Dec. 18

Dec. 19 – Carrie Blakeslee Bookman (sp?) buried.

Dec. 20 – Work on stump lever and in mill. Get the same grade of movement as the other one bought on Oct. 7, 1881 – No 55531 in place of No. 51963, which was returned as it did not run well.

Dec. 24

Dec. 25 – All at Church & Sunday School. Carrie joins the M. E. Church on Probation and Baptized by sprinkling. We have real reason to be thankful for Gods mercies.

Dec. 26

Dec. 27 – Drafting a plan for our new house.

Dec. 28, 29, 30

Dec. 31 – Posting Books.
