January 1, 1878 – Laying stone for cistern in cellar. Who can tell what may happen before this year shall close. May we be at all times ready for any change.

Jan. 2

Jan. 3 – Draw stone for cistern. Kill hogs – 2 spring pigs and weighed 273’ the other 274’ and no extry pains taken with them, the best we ever done with spring pigs.

Jan. 4, 5, 6

Jan. 7 – Take mother & Lee up to Elmira, NY – also go to Horseheads, NY, very cold. Lee commences school at Elmira. Father at Towanda, Pa. As auditor. This is his last year as Co. auditor.

Jan. 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15

Jan. 16 – Help Smith Nichols cement cistern.

Jan. 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24

Jan. 25 – Laertus (sp?) Langford taken to the Insane Asylum at Danville this state. Edwin Blakeslee & father go with him to help Mr. Geo. Langford.

Feb. 15 – Cutting ice under mill. Trade horses with H. B. Haight. Trade off the black mare for a bay mare 8 year old last Aug.

Apr. 23 – At Smithfield Pa. Looking after poor a/c. Mr. William Pierce, Christapher Pierce’s brother died, and Mr. Ely Hyatts daughter buried.

May 2 – Old Mr. Plynn Phelps buried.

May 25 – Over 20 teams here drawing the Tompkins Steam Mill away. Sold by Job Morley to a Mr. Taylor of Tayler Huddle in Granville.

June 24 – Deliver School duplicate to A. J. Stanton and Bonds & warrant, and see J. W. Wrisley also see C. H. Phelps and settle with him.

July 3 – Lee & I start for Elmira, NY at 3 am, at C. B. Brighams a dog scares my horses, result a run away. Lee not hurt. I have my ankle sprained, the wagon not much damaged, harness --?—horses not much scared. Lay a bed rest of day.

July 4 – Lay abed & around house. Uri Philips struck with lightning & killed while cultivating corn. Funeral tomorrow. Hear that the lightning cut a hole through his hat on the right side and tore off his boot heel.

July 5 – In house writing, can step on my foot a little.

July 10 – Mow some and chore around mill. Sell my daark bay mare to Job Morley for #100.00 cash.

July 11, 12, 13, 14

July 15 – Work in hay. Wesley & Hester and family come visiting.

July 21 – Calvin Cranmer died.

July 22 – Calvin Cranmer buried.

July 26 – Birth Day – So swift times go I can’t hardly tell how old I am.

Aug. 4 – All at Church & Sunday School. I go over to the Presbyterian Church and hear C. H. Phips preach. Carpenter buried.

Aug. 17 – Hester & family go to Mr. John Smith’s. Wesley not feeling well.

Aug. 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23

Aug. 24 – At caucus to elect delegates to County Convention to nominate Co. officers. Father trying for the nomination for Representative.

Aug. 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31

Sept. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Sept. 10 – All go to Elmira, NY to attend State Fair. Lee goes with us. Stay at Wesleys.

Sept. 14 – Thads (?sp) receives a telegram that his father was killed yesterday.

Sept. 15

Sept. 16 – Thads (may be Thaddeus?) gets back and found that his father was killed with a horse last Thursday and was buried on Saturday at 11 am.

Sept. 17, 18

Sept. 19 – At Troy to see in regard to selling butter. Contract same to Mr. Bailey fer 18 cents per lb.

Sept. 20 – Deliver butter to Troy, Mr. Bailey spoke of it as being very fine.

Sept. 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30

Oct. 1 – At Troy with B. Garrison. Receive deed of him fer all the land he owns South of road – 59 acres more or less – also receive release of Pomery Bros. On S???? – pay down $500, give note of $500 due 1st day of March 1880 and 1 note of $1000.00 only a lien on the land bought today to be paid in 3 payments of $333 1/3 first of March 1881, $333 1/3 first of March 1882, $333 1/3 first of March 1883.

Oct. 2, 3, 4

Oct. 5 – Collecting a/c’s in Smithfield Twp. Get $160.00.

Oct. 6 – All at Presbyterian Church. Communion day, first time I ever was at a Communion except at my own church.

Oct. 7

Oct. 8 – All at Troy, pay Pomery Bros. $250.00 on land, go to Uncle Samuel Riggs.

Oct. 9, 10, 11, 12, 13

Oct. 14 – Father & Mother, Isadore & self at Towanda, agree with J. F. Bender to paint Father & Mother pictures to be done in 3 months, agree to give $12.00 each.

Oct. 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23

Oct. 24 – Sell Marilda (sp?) Bourne land conveyed to me by deed by Benegar Garrison & wife on Oct. 1st 1878, date of deed Sept. 26, 1878. Terms of payment $500.00 down, $250.00 + interest per year until paid, to then give a good deed. See article of agreement of this date.

Oct. 27 – Mrs. John Wheeler died.

Nov. 1 – Meet School Directors at West Burlington, accept School House at West Burlington. Rec’d of Marilda Bourne $650.00 to date to apply on contract. See October 24, 1878.

Nov. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Nov. 7 – Work around mill. Mr. Abram Cary & Mrs. M. M. Langford married.

Nov. 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25

Nov. 26 – Help Wm. Riggs fix School house.

Nov. 27 – At Stewards (Troy district) Meeting at Towanda as Steward. Albert Scott goes with me. Rains hard most all day. Presiding Elders Salary put at $1800 by a vote of 8 to 7, I voting against the am’t.
