January 1, 1876 – Choring and run engine to grind 30 bushels chop. Hope that the New Year which commences rather unfavorable may yet prove to be a profitable one both Spiritualy and financialy. A very pleasant day, farmers ploughing. Thermometer 70 in the shade, one comfortable in their shirtsleeves.

Jan. 2

Jan. 3 – Take father down to C. Campbells who takes him to Towanda, one of the Co. auditors. Get Jack screws and raise up the grist mill. Warm and pleasant.

Jan. 4 – Mr. Lantie Campbell & Miss Clara Gerould married.

Jan. 7 – The sale advertised to come off today adjourned to the 17th of this month.

Jan. 8, 9

Jan. 10 – Make stump boad and draw off stumps. Father at Towanda as Co. auditor.

Jan. 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 – Build stump fence

Jan. 16

Jan. 17 – Attend Sheriff sale of Fathers personal property. Bid in for father the following things—

1 Bay mare at 56, 1 summer wagon at 75, 1 Set D Harness 13.75, 1 Buggy at 40, Bob Sleds at 4.75, 1 Cutter at 6.75, 3 cows at 3.00, 1 yearling at 1.00, Stump machine at 51.00, ????? at 1.00, Shingles at 150.00, total 402.25. The things that were sold went very high. Am’t realized from sale 900.00 to 950.00. Remaining Buy ½ interest in Stump machine of J. C. Tompkins.

Jan. 18 – Choring and get chains mended. Sell my interest in lumber (Fathers interest) sold to Judson Blackman yesterday for the amt he bid on oxen, viz 87.00. I now own the whole of the oxen.

Jan. 19 – We all attend my sister Ophelia Wedding, who is married to Clarence T. Brigham of Smithfield.

Jan. 20 – All at Mr. Horace Brigham’s at the ??? a pleasant visit. Mr. Allen Langford died at about 1 oclock this morning.

Jan. 26 – Burn off root heaps. The sheriff today advertizes 1 pair steers, 1 Mowing machine, farming tools and a quantity of Pine logs for sale Feb. 1, 10 am.

Feb. 16 – Receive notice that I was elected auditor for 3 years.

Feb. 17 – All at Geo. T. Beaches visiting. Go with cutter, first time of the season. Horace Keelers & wife there. Mrs. Augustus Phelps died.

Feb. 18, 19

Feb. 20 – Start for Church & break spring to wagon and come home. Tim C. Wheelers son-in-law Wakefield died a day or two since.

Feb. 21, 22, 23

Feb. 24 – Buy at sheriff sale all the things advertized for 400.00. Pay the same by letting J. S. Blackman have 100,000 No 1 shingles. See bill. At sale of P. P. Burns everything sold in house and out doors of personal property for $718.00.

Feb. 25, 26

Feb. 27 – Orville Gerould died

Feb. 28 – At West Burlington as per notice to attend auditor meeting. A new law, new officers do not come into office until the first Monday in April. Good sleighing.

Feb. 29 – Visit with Jay McAffee wife & sister in evening all at Uncle Alfred Riggs. Good sleighing.

March 12 – Ira Bullock buried on the turnpike

Mar. 13 – Run circular saw & break belt.

Mar. 14 – Go to Troy after belt, could not get any. Very rough and cold. Ed E. Loomis of Troy failed, Liabilities 35,000.00, assetts about 15,000.00

Mar. 15 – Run engine and go with Clarence to see Amos Killey as to horse trade.

Apr. 2 – At Church & S. School, funeral of Mr. Tompkins baby. Get Bro. Crow who preached the sermon and take him home. Very muddy.

Apr. 8 – At Troy to see Pomeroys in regard to land, ride up with J. C. Tompkins.

May 8 – Clarence & I at Troy to see Pomeroys in regard to land, they offer to throw off $1000 if we will pay their claim by the first of Sept. 1876.

May 9, 10

May 11 – More Hog Pen, Buy one 5 year old cow of J. C. Tompkins for $75.00 pay the cash down. Geo. Kellogg buried.

May 12, 13, 14, 15, 16

May 17 – Centenial Exhibition opens at Philadelphia 250,000 people present.

May 18 – Augustus Phelps died aged 80 years.

May 19, 20, 21, 22

May 23 – All at Troy, sell 1 tub Butter 25 c 48? $12.00. Sign a agreement with Pomeroy Bro. To take ½ of fathers Real Estate. See copy of agreement in memoranda & Centenial Notes at end of this book.

May 24 – Work at sprouting potatoes and give one load to D. J. C. Tompkins – potatoes worth about 20 c a bush. Visit with Uncle Samuel Riggs who is getting better, can just drive a horse and get around a little.

May 25 – Plant corn & potatoes for Clarence ½ day. Philip Diltz died.

May 26 – Cut logs for Bill of Timber for J. Hains.

May 30 – All at Decoration at Smithfield

June 1 – Help finish surveying land Sev Plot, and fight fire until 11 p.m. for Wm. Campbell.

July 22 – Work in hay, bridge across creek (Framed) goes down while I am on it with a load of hay & yoke of oxen, the load tipped on me but escaped with a few slight bruzes. See steroscopic view of Bridge, the brudge broke near where Mr. Tompkins sits in the picture.

Aug. 19 – Work on wall ½. At caucus Delegates Elected to county convention in favor of father for Representative.

Aug. 21 – Start for the Centenial Exhibition at Philadelphia from Towanda Pa – in Co with C. W. Smith – leave Towanda at 10:05 PM Fare to Philadelphia & return $9.15

Aug. 22 – Arrive at Philadelphia at 6:30 AM. Board at Richard Prices on 1705 Willington Street at 12/ per day. At the Exhibition most of the day. Father got 32 votes in the Republican convention at Towanda for Representative lacking 14 of a majority therefore failed this time.

Aug. 26 – Arrive in Towanda at 5:30 AM – Very tired & sleepy

Oct. 13 – Paint and send butter to Gotchins A Wood, 103 Park Place, New York – 4 firkins – 2 tubs

Nov. 9 – Reported that the Republican candidates are elected, Hays & Wheeler

Nov. 10 – Report that the Small Pox has been brought from the Centenial (which closes today) and that Mrs. Ed E. Loomis of Troy has died with the same. News of yesterday of Election contradicted.

Nov. 11 – Report that Tilden & Hendrix are elected by 4 electoral votes.

Nov. 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17

Nov. 18 – Arrive home from S. Riggs at 1 PM. Plane remainder of day with planer. Hear that Henry B. Wilhelm died yesterday (the above should be yesterday the 17th) Sort apples today, rotting very badly.

Nov. 19, 20, 21, 22

Nov. 23 – At Towanda with Clarence, buy 1 suit of clothes for $14.00.

Nov. 24, 25, 26, 27

Nov. 28 – Buy 1 set couble harness of Abram Morly, silver plate oak taned. Pay cash

Nov. 29 – Get horse shod at Duberts in afternoon.

Dec. 19 – At James Nichols to look at a span of horses.

Dec. 21 – At Towanda. Lead home one mare 3 years old last July, Belonging to Mr. A. Snell – to try her out to return if I don’t like her within 2 weeks.

Dec. 23 – At Mr. Hocombs to see horses, not at home

Dec. 24 – All at church & Sunday School preaching by Rev. W. Slatham. Byran Wood and Miss Rosa Brown married in church.
