Aug. 16 – Choring and go to Burlington. Business nearly Suspended on account of the war men are enlisting nearly all the time.

Aug. 22 – Our Folks return from york State the Friends there all well, great excitement about the war up there. 40 or 50 men Start from Smithfield Centre for the Seat of war. Among them are C. W. Smith, Horace Smith.

Aug. 24 – attend Church on the Turnpike preaching by Rev. M. Coyl.

Aug. 25 – Commence going to School at Smithfield. Study Common Branches. Board at home the Same as the fall of 1861 the School Small on acct of the war. About 40 Scholars W. W. Rodgers Teacher of Canton.
