1859 | 10-Aug | O | Ryan, Hon. John 1 | Obituary----Hon. John Ryan, the subject of this notice, was born in the village of Wyoming, near Wilksbarre, Pa., on the 1st day of January, 1787, and died at his residence at Lawrenceville, Tioga Co. Pa., on the 22nd day of July, 1859. The father of the deceased was a resident of Wyoming prior to the American Revolution, and during the War was a soldier in the Army of Washington. He also served in the Campaign of General Sullivan against the Indians on the Chemung and Genesee. He was born in Connecticut, where his paternal ancestor, who was an Irishman, had settled in an early period on Colonial times. Soon after the close of the Revolutionary War, he removed from Wyoming to Southport, on the Chemung. Judge Ryan was one of the early settlers of Tioga Co. in the year 1810, soon after his marriage, he located on the Cowanesque River. His location embraced what is now called Elkland Village, but was formerly know as Ryanville. At that time the territory now included within the County of Tioga, was a w |
1859 | 10-Aug | O | Ryan, Hon. John 2 | It is higher praise to say of Judge Ryan, that this and all his subsequent acquisitions were the results of his own exertions and energies that he had not the aid of fortune or rich friends to commence with. The deceased was well known as a public man and politician—having held at various times, and by appointment and election, positions which brought him prominently before the people----throughout the State of Pennsylvania. At the October election in 1820, he was elected a member of the House of Representatives of this State, and was continued a member during 6 successive terms. He was afterward elected a member of the State Senate and served one term. In the spring of 1829, he was appointed Superintendent of the West Branch Division of the Pa. Canal, and served in this capacity 3 years. On the 29th of Jan., 1833, he was appointed by Gov. Wolf, and associate Judge of Tioga Co., he held this appointment until the 27th of Feb., 1842-----when it was annulled by the limitation contained in the schedule to |

In 1803 he became a resident of Lindsley, N. Y. In 1806 he was married to Maria, eldest daughter of Judge Eleaser Lindsley, and in 1817 removed to Lawrencville. It thus appears that Mr. Ford has been a resident of this vicinity for more than half a century, and of Lawrenceville for 42 years. Here, when the country was new, and when about 21 years old, without means, he began his long and successful career as a business man, and to a good old age shared largely the confidence and esteem of a wide circle of friends. Twice he was called to serve this County, (Tioga) in the State Legislature, and subsequently during 2 terms, from 1828 to 1832, he represented this district in Congress. His was a heart of kindly affection, and now that he has gone, a large circle of children and children’s children, with a widowed wife, mourn as for one whose presence among them shed a mellow ligh |
