Died Robert Roy died last
Wed. at the residence of his son in this borough. He was born in Warwick,
Orange Co., NY on the 13th of May 1884, and was in his 58th year at the
date of his death. His parents who were sturdy Scotch stock, moved to Elmira,
then called Newtown, when the boy Robert was four yrs. old. As the youth
grew in age he became desirous to acquire a collegiate education so that
he might fit himself for the Christian ministry; but while preparing himself
for college and for a theological course he took a hard cold and suffered
for six years from inflammatory rheumatism. He was thus prevented from
pursuing his contemplated studies. On measurably recovering his health
he studied medicine and learned the drug business, entering the drug store
of Mr. William Ogden, of Elmira, for that purpose. Having learned the trade,
he came to this borough in 1848 and opened the first store exclusively
devoted to the sale of drugs and medicines in this county. For about 2

Died news from Chatham
dated Nov 25th 1881. Mr. Robert Saxbury, who lost his life by being thrown
from his buggy at Shortsville, of which mention has been made theretofore,
was born in the vicinity of Painted Post in the year 1808. At the age of
about 6 yrs., his father moved into Pennsylvania, living at one time on
the farm owned by Dwight Cummings, on Crooked Creek. About the year of
1841 or 2 he purchased the farm where he lived at the time of his death,
and built a house and cleared some of the land. In 1843 he married Miss
Fidelia A. Howe, a very estimable lady from Otsego Co., NY. By their united
labors they cleared up the land, erected buildings, kept out of debt and
raised their little family to two children. Both lost their lives by one
accident, leaving a will executed last May bequeathing to their children
about equally about $3,500 worth of property real and personal. Both were
members of the Baptist Church |

at his residence in Liberty on Wed., the 16th inst., aged 65 yrs 11 mos
and 23 das. "Uncle Joseph" as he was familiarly called, was the tenth of
a family of sixteen children born to John and Susannah Shaffer. At the
age of 20 he went to Newberry, Lycoming Co., to serve an apprenticeship
at the tailoring trade. At the expiration of hjis time he returned to his
native
place, and for nearly 40 yrs., he worked assiduously at the trade of his
choice. He was born the 23d of Nov 1815, and was the first male child born
in Liberty twp. He leaves a widow and 6 children, 23 grandchildren and
2 great-grandchildren |

Mr. John Shoff of Elkland died on the 15th inst., aged about 80 yrs. He
was a native of Charleston, S. C., but removed to New York, and while there
became one of the original stockholders in the Erie Railroad, losing nearly
$100,00 (?) by the failure of the company that built the road. He then
removed to Elkland, where he resided until his death. He built a considerable
portion of Elkland, and during his residence there he was largely engaged
in lumbering. He leaves a wife, 1 son and 3 or 4 daughters. (No names given) |
