NORMAN ALLIS, 78, died unexpectedly, but
peacefully, on July 8, 2020 at Winter Haven Hospital, FL with his
wife Janet by his side. Born on Jan. 29, 1942, in Endicott, NY to
the late Rodney and Marie Allis, he resided in Rome, PA, most of his
younger life. Graduating from Northeast Bradford High School in
1959, he continued his education at Mansfield State College
graduating with a BS in secondary education in 1963. He received a
National Science Foundation Scholarship to purse his master’s degree
in mathematics education, which he completed in 1972 followed by a
master’s degree in accounting from Elmira College in 1974. After
briefly teaching in New Jersey and California, he returned to
Northeast Bradford High School where he taught senior high math from
1964 until 1980. With the encouragement of many faculty members, he
pursued an interest in a fellow teacher, Janet Williams. On Aug. 7,
1965, they were married at Kulp United Methodist Church, Kulp, PA
and would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this year.
The Allises lived in Nichols, NY from 1966-1980. In 1972, Norman
began driving motor coaches during summers and discovered he really
enjoyed it. He and Janet retired from teaching in 1980, and moved to
Elysburg. He then worked full-time for Catawese Coach Lines where he
specialized in charter and company tours locally and around the
United States and Canada, driving over two million miles for
Catawese. For over 20 years, he was the lead driver of 4-7 buses on
a 35-day tour of the USA for Rotary Exchange students prior to their
return to their home countries. Both interested in traveling, they
visited all 50 states, traveling around United States and Canada.
They especially enjoyed taking their grandson, Bryce, on summer
vacations. Norman LOVED to drive, whether his Lincoln, his Ford
Ranger pickup, or “Cochise,” a Catawese motor coach. After both
Norman and Janet retired again in 2009, they purchased a seasonal
home in Haines City, Florida, and enjoyed spending their winters
there. It also provided the opportunity for them to visit their
daughter’s family in North Carolina, as they traveled up and down
I-95 and watch grandsons Grant and Gavin play soccer and basketball.
Norman was a former member of Rome United Methodist Church and a
current member of the Kulp United Methodist Church, where he served
as treasurer for many years. He was a member of Westbrook Masonic
Lodge #333 in Nichols, from 1976 until the lodge disbanded recently.
Norman was a member of the Towanda Gun Club. He enjoyed bowling,
especially with the Farmers team in Danville. A fan of NASCAR, he
followed the Earnhardts and more recently, Chase Elliott. Both he
and Janet loved Southern Gospel music and traveled extensively to
concerts up and down the East Coast. In addition to his wife Janet,
Norman is survived by children: son, Brandon (Tricia Gasdick),

She was a confidant, a secret keeper, an enthusiastic storyteller, a

slow down. She learned to reupholster furniture, crafted beautiful
dolls, picked up other part time jobs, and fully supported and

-YVONNE JACOBS COLE - Those
we hold most dear never truly leave us…they live on in the
kindnesses they showed, the comfort they shared and the love they
brought into our lives...
Yvonne Jacobs Cole, 99, of Nichols passed away
peacefully in her sleep on Monday evening, July 20, 2020. Yvonne was
born on a cold wintry February 3rd 1921 at home in Windham, Pa. She
was one of six children to the late Byron and Frances (Chaplin)
Jacobs. Yvonne spent her youth attending school in Windham and was a
graduate of the LeRaysville High School. For over twenty-five years,
Yvonne and her husband Frank owned and operated Cole’s Service
Station on Main Street in Nichols. Cole’s became a staple to the
area and many would stop by for a loaf of bread, penny candy, some
freshly delivered milk from Pendelton’s or a few gallons of gas. In
1950, a young lad at the age of 13 came a whistling a tune and Frank
and Yvonne hired Jay Dutton to help operate the store. In 1970, the
torch was passed on to Jay and Carol Dutton who to this day both
hold a very special spot in the family’s heart. Yvonne loved her
little community of Nichols where she was a member of the Nichols
United Methodist Church and the Nichols American Legion Auxiliary.
She enjoyed painting, bowling, sewing, knitting her famous Christmas
Stockings and spending time in her garden — although her greatest
happiness was found when family was near, whether at her home,
traveling to see her grandchildren or at their beloved family
cottage in Fair Haven. Yvonne will be missed beyond words by her
children: Rich and his wife Susan Cole; Lori and her husband David
Somers; Carl Cole; her stepson Joseph Cole; her “adopted” son Jay
Dutton and wife Carol; her adoring grandchildren who say she “was
the best grandma ever” Michelle, Brian, Mandy, Richie, Jennifer,
Kathleen and Michael. Her great grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Gabby,
Camille, Danielle, Tierra, Elizabeth, Emily, Zachary, John, Michael,
Anna, Henry, Eleanor and Jane; sisters-in-law Janice (Hutchinson)
Jacobs and Marie (Ayers) Jacobs; and many nieces, nephews. Yvonne
was welcomed into heaven by her husband Frank; Connie Dutton who was
like a second mom to Rich, Lori and Carl; Yvonne’s siblings: N.
Richard Jacobs, William Jacobs, Robert Jacobs, Jeanne Mason and Ruth
Rought. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of
visitation on Tuesday, July 28th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sutfin

trips to baseball games in Williamsport. Mike retired in 2018, and

occasion to be with them, Christmas, Easter, birthdays, etc. He
possessed an impressive wit and enjoyed bantering with family and

family gathering, his one liners were usually heard and often
included in text messages. He loved grilled sausages, going to

for a good cup of coffee. There were many things Mike was unable to
do or experience in his life, but he always tried to maintain a
positive attitude. The family wishes to thank so many caregivers and
friends who helped to make his life fuller over the years. It is
impossible to name them all. Special gratitude is extended to Joan

BASIL LEONARD “Lee” SEARJEANT passed
away on July 11, 2020 at the Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in
Sayre, PA. He had celebrated his 88th birthday on May 13. Lee was
preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Stanley and Phyllis
Dorothy (Godbold) Searjeant, and brother Martin of London, England,
and his long-time companion, Eddie Aponte of New York City. He is
survived by a nephew, Bradley Searjeant, his wife Judith and their
children Elizabeth Fogarty and Jamie Searjeant of Wilmington, Kent,
England, and several great-nieces and -nephews. He has also left
behind many loving friends in the Lockwood, New York area, in New
York City and in England. Lee was born in 1932 in Ilford, in
northeast London. After school there, Lee was a member of the Royal
Air Force before working in the film industry on both sides of the
Atlantic. He retired after spending several years as a sales manager
for Aramis, Inc., where he worked at several distinguished New York
City department stores. He attended services at the Grace Episcopal
Church in Waverly, New York and the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe
in Manhattan. During Lee’s childhood he experienced the 1939 – 1941
German bombing of London in World War II. His family spent time in
various fallout shelters during the raids, including days at a time
sheltering in the London Underground, and in a bank vault in a
building that housed his father’s optometry office. He and his
brother Martin devised a war game – after every raid, when the roads
were littered with shrapnel, they would collect metal fragments of
all sizes, and at the end of the day tally up and see who had found
the most pieces, and more importantly, the largest piece. Regardless
of the air raids, he was still able to indulge his nascent love of
movies when his family went to the pictures. Sometimes, because of
the raids, they’d have to leave in the middle of a film and return
later to see the ending, but the films took their minds off the
reality of the war. Mrs. Miniver, starring Greer Garson, was a movie
about ordinary people coping with life during the bombing raids that
Lee always remembered and mentioned when discussing the war. Upon
completion of his O Level exams, Lee joined the United Kingdom’s
Royal Air Force (RAF), where he worked as a cryptographer for four
years. As it was peacetime, he was stationed closed to home and was
able to see his family regularly, and to enjoy an occasional night
out in a London pub. Lee and his parents moved to Toronto, Ontario
in the 1950s, where Lee worked in film production at the Canadian
Broadcast Corporation (CBC). Lee made his first trip to New York
City during that time and vowed that someday he would return. When
his parents made the decision to go back to England to be nearer to
their families, Lee decided to use the skills acquired at the CBC,
back in London. He landed a job in the promotions department of
Columbia Pictures in their office on Soho Square. After his mother
passed away, Lee’s father moved his optometry business to Plymouth,
in Devon on the southwestern English coast. Lee joined him there and
bought a small bungalow he named “Blue Haze”. Lee and his father
enjoyed the proximity to the English Channel and the Atlantic for
many years and he retained a fondness for Plymouth throughout his
life. His ashes will be scattered near Blue Haze. Lee’s wanderlust
and vow to see New York again led him to emigrate there in the early
1960’s. He used his experience in film to land a role at United
Artists, the company founded by Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin,
Douglas Fairbanks and D. W. Griffith, all giants of movie history.
When the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) opened an office on
Third Avenue in New York City, an old colleague from London was
among the staff and asked Lee to join as a film editor, a job that
Lee enjoyed for many years. Looking for a new challenge, Lee was
intrigued to learn that Estee Lauder was starting a new company with
products targeted to men, named after one of Alexandre Dumas’ Three
Musketeers, Aramis. Lee’s job was to make Aramis a household name in
America by leading the company’s sales efforts in some of the most
famous New York department stores. including B. Altman & Co., Lord &
Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman, from which he
retired after several years of dedicated service. He enjoyed
engaging with people, and the new job allowed him to do that all
day. He met many a famous person in the shops; two favorites were
Claude Rains and Anthony Perkins, who asked him to lunch and
after-work drinks. Lee met his long-time companion, Eddie Aponte, in
New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, where they both lived. They would
see each other in the area when Eddie walked his dog Spike. They
found that they shared many interests and complimented each other in
many ways. Each became a part of the other’s family and circle of
friends, and they always spent holidays with family at the Jersey
Shore, in New York City, or in England. Over the years, Lee and
Eddie indulged a love for sailing and took at least one cruise every
year. They sailed mostly to the Caribbean, where they always looked
forward to spending time in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. They also
cruised in the Mediterranean, especially enjoying Greece. They
travelled often to England to visit the Searjeants and family
friends in London and Plymouth. Once on a ship to England, Lee met
Judy Garland, who was traveling to perform in London, and her then
husband, Sid Luft, who invited him to dine with them on the ship,
and gave him tickets to watch her show at the Palladium theatre in
London. Lee had a lifelong devotion to the star, and in the last
year was mesmerized by the 2019 biopic, Judy, which won an Oscar for
Renee Zellweger, whose uncanny performance as Garland was a constant
topic of conversation for Lee. One day in the late 1980’s, Lee saw
an advertisement in a real estate brochure for a charming 1895 house
in upstate New York. He phoned the agent, who promptly flew Lee up
to Lockwood to see the house and he made an offer on the spot. The
house became his happiest project. Lee spent as many days in
Lockwood every year as the rent control agreement on his New York
City flat would allow. He loved taking care of his garden, mowing
the large lawn and watching the spring turn to summer and then to
fall every year. Lee and Eddie hosted numerous friends from New
York, and English relatives, who loved the landscape of the Southern
Tier and seeing the sights: the Finger Lakes and New York wine
country; plentiful antique markets; Watkins Glen State Park, with
its numerous waterfalls; local theatrical productions in Owego and
Elmira; the Tioga Downs raceway; the Corning Museum of Glass. Lee’s
lifelong passion was movies. He grew up steeped in old Hollywood and
the studio system stars. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of films
from the 1940’s through the 1990’s – he could recall the directors
and stars of nearly every film and could tell stories about the
people and facts on the making of most every movie. Nearly every
situation he encountered sparked recall of a film, as his friends
can attest. He searched the flea markets upstate to add to his
collection of thousands of VHS and DVD movies, and met his favorite
bootleg film dealer in NYC’s Union Square every weekend he was in
the city, weather permitting, to fill in his library of classic
movies. On a lucky day he would be able to get copies of the
Oscar-nominated shows, prior to the awards ceremony, for $1. Lee
loved nothing more than sharing his movie expertise and insight with
friends. In recent years, Lee began capturing his reminisces on
paper. At the closing of his memoir of living through the London
bombing as a child during the war, he wrote: “World War II proved
not to be the war to end all wars – far from it. They are given many
other names, but the killing continues. Peace in our time? Let’s
hope so.” This lovely, kind and gentle man will be remembered fondly
by everyone whose lives he graced. A memorial service to honor Lee’s
life will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at
Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, New York with Rev.
Benjamin Lentz officiating. -Sayre Morning Times 8/1/2020

JAMES A. STRANGER, 59 of Rochester, N.Y.
(formerly of Lowman, N.Y.), passed away of pancreatic cancer on
Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He
was the youngest son of Elmer L. and Phyllis M. (Topp) Stranger,
born April 22, 1961, in Elmira, N.Y. Jim was predeceased by his
parents Elmer L. Stranger and Phyllis M. (Topp) Stranger of Lowman,
N.Y.; his step mother Violette M. Stranger of Elmira, N.Y.; paternal
grandparents Robert B. Stranger Sr. and Ruth M. (Northrup) Stranger
of Lowman, N.Y.; maternal grandparents Edward J. Topp and Gladys M.
(McFarlane) Topp of Muscoda, Wis.; his brothers-in-law LaVerne D.
Schmidt of Gotham, Wis.; Gerald H. Morgan of Gillette, Pa.; and
Merrill D. ‘Mike’ Aumick of Chemung, N.Y.; sister Sharron K.
(Stranger) Schmidt of Gotham, Wis.; sister-in-law Gabrielle M.
(Kruger) (Heitauer) Stranger of Lowman, N.Y.; nephew Dennis J.
Heitauer of Elmira, NY; niece Christina L. Bingham of Reidsville,
N.C. (formerly of Lowman and Chemung, N.Y.); and several very
special aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his brothers
David (Rhonda McCleod) Stranger of Anchorage, Alaska, and Robert
(Kathy) Stranger of Lowman, N.Y.; sisters Donna L. (Stranger) Morgan
of Rochester, N.Y., and Susan C. (Stranger) (Bingham) Aumick of
Chemung, N.Y.; and a very special, kind and compassionate niece,
Machelle Shorey of Rochester, N.Y. who helped take care of Jim
during his last few weeks of life and is helping the family deal
with his final affairs; plus two very special cousins, Nancy and
George Ziegler, who have been loving and supportive and instrumental
in helping the family with the needs and final wishes of Jim and his
siblings during this difficult time... along with so many other
wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who also loved and
cared about him too. From birth to adulthood, Jim grew up in Lowman,
with his parents, two brothers, three sisters, and his paternal
grandparents. He attended elementary school, middle school, and high
school in Elmira, N.Y. and graduated high school from the Elmira
Free Academy. After high school, Jim became a ‘ jack of all trades.’
He loved working outdoors. He enjoyed landscaping and gardening and
did that for most of his lifetime. He also did repair and
restoration work, such as painting, roofing and siding jobs on
peoples homes, and even mowed lawns in the summer and shoveled snow
in the winter, for people who couldn’t do it for themselves. When he
was a young man, he worked for many of his neighbors doing odd jobs
that they were unable to do for themselves because they were
elderly... and since he had the ‘gift for gab’, those folks who were
alone, enjoyed having him around and listening to his stories. He
had a heart of gold and would help anyone, at any time if they
needed him. Jim also had a stubborn streak in him and liked to do
things his way, but he had a drive to get things done... and he
did... at his own pace. He was quick to jump and do things for
friends and neighbors before tackling his own chores at home...
BUT... that’s the way it is with most kids... especially if they are
getting paid! Hahaha! Well, now that Jim has taken his journey home,
his family and friends hope that someday, in heaven, they’ll find
him doing all of his favorite things, like riding his bike, or
eating Grandma Stranger’s sugar cookies and Mom’s homemade bread, or
planting flowers (especially gladiolas, peonies, and lilacs, which
were some of his favorites)... and going to church with his Mom and
Dad. Jim had always liked going to church. He was baptized at the
Lowman United Methodist Church when he was two months old and he
attended Sunday School and then church thereafter, for most of his
life. He believed in God with all of his heart and accepted Jesus
Christ as his Lord and Savior. So until we meet again, our dear
beloved brother, we pray that you’ll Rest in Peace in the loving
arms of Jesus, your Lord and Savior. God bless your sweet soul. We
will miss you Jimmy and we pray that God will allow us to join up
with you again, in heaven, some day. With All Our Love, your Family.
Jim’s family would like to thank all of his caregivers, including
his Drs., nurses, social workers, hospice, friends, and family who
helped care for him and thank you to Dierna Funeral Home, 2309
Culver Rd., Rochester, New York for handling his cremation and to
the wonderful people at the Morning Times for running his
obituary. A private prayer and committal service will be held at a
later date at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at
the Riverside Cemetery in Lowman/Chemung, N.Y. Memorial
contributions can be made to the Jacob Lowman Free Christian Church
in Lowman, N.Y., in memory of James A. Stranger. -Sayre Morning

If I should die before the rest of you
Break not a flower nor inscribe a stone
Nor, when I’m gone, speak in a Sunday voice,
But be the usual selves I have known.
Weep if you must.
Parting is hell.
But life goes on.
So sing as well.
