90, of Peachtree City, Ga., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013. She was very meticulous about things and enjoyed family gatherings. She was a secretary for the Penn-Wells Hotel for several years before moving to New York. She was an assistant office manager at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Corning, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her husband George Banker; two brothers, Ward Anderson, Allen Anderson, and a sister-in-law, Lona Banker. She is survived by her daughter Anita and Tom Peterson of Sharpsburg, Ga.; grandson, Christopher and Jen Peterson of Chesapeake, Va.; granddaughter, Laura and Bill Linkous, III of Atlanta, Ga.; eight great-grandchildren; brother Robert and Nancy Anderson of Wellsboro; several nieces and nephews including, Willard Banker of Wellsboro. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m., in the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Peachtree City, Ga. BARRY Mary T. Harvey
age 88, of Dushore, died on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013 at the Highlands Care Center in Laporte. Mary was born on May 10, 1924 in Satterfield a daughter of the late William P. and Martha G. Connor Barry. She graduated from St. Basil's High School a member of the class of 1944. Mary married Martin Elmer Harvey of Kaiserville, and he predeceased her on June 4, 1999. Before her children were born, Mary worked at the former Weldon Manufacturing Co. of Lopez, and also at GTE Sylvania in Towanda. Mary was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She loved to visit her relatives and neighbors and was always willing to help anyone she could. She enjoyed walking and dancing. Surviving are two sons Robert and Donnata Harvey of Wyalsuing and Leo Harvey of Tunkhannock; four daughters and sons-in-law Martina Mapes Post of Sugar Run, Elizabeth and John Meehan of Sarasota, Fla., Rose Harvey of Hanahan, S.C. and Charolette Richlin of Schaefferstown; brother and sister-in-law Francis J. and Sophia Barry of Dushore; sister and brother-in-law Martha and Nartcy Nitcznski of Dushore; brother-in-law Eben H. Harvey of Tunkhannock; 18 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant son, Martin Lewis Harvey and brothers William John Barry on Dec. 10, 1997 and Leo Charles Barry on March 31, 2005. Elmira: Age 58, passed away, Monday January 21, 2013 at home. Philip was born in Elmira on September 1, 1954, a son of the late Thomas D. and Margaret (Gallavan) Bermingham. BIERWILER Clara LaVerne (Bierwiler) (Punty) Griffiths
Age 84 of Mclean, VA died on Saturday, January 26, 2012 at the Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center, where she was visited by family and friends. She grew up in Elmira, and then lived in Hornell, and Rochester, NY before settling in the Mclean, VA area. Clara excelled as a homemaker and retired from her position as a merchandise representative at K-mart, caring for several family members in her retirement. She is survived by her husband of 65 years Wilton B Griffiths, daughter-in-law Barb (Wurz) Griffiths of Blacksburg, VA, two grandaughters and many nephews, nieces, and her brother Charles Bierwiler of Orchard Park, NY. Clara was especially close to her aunt Vanetta (Johny) Baker of Horseheads, NY. Clara was predeceased by her sons Richard Charles Griffiths and John Bradley Griffiths and was the daughter of the late Clarence Charles Bierwiler and Lottie Ila (Dickson) Bierwiler. There will be a gathering at their home in Mclean, VA to celebrate Clara's life on Thursday, January 31 between the hours of 4 pm and 7 pm. Private interment will take place at National Memorial Park King David Memorial Gardens, Falls Church, VA at the convenience of the family. 93, of Genesee, PA, formerly of Confluence, PA, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013 in her home. Born July 9, 1919, in Addison, PA, she was the daughter of Dillon and Carrie Roberts Bisel. She was married to Ronald F. Hayman, who predeceased her in 1992. Surviving are: two sons, Edward (Gerea) Hayman of Kingsport, TN and Barry K. (Deborah Rutkowski) Hayman of Genesee; four grandchildren, Michelle Hayman, Dennis Hayman, Kristen Hayman, and Larkin Hayman; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Leslie of Somerset, PA and Hazel Martindale of Pontiac, MI ; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Glenn Bisel and Arthur Bisel; and a sister, Pearl Twigg. BOINSKI Mary Catherine (Boinski) Shedlawski
88, of Forty Fort, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013. Born on March 21, 1924, in Blossburg, Mary Catherine was the daughter of Frank and Helen (Kirejewski) Boinski. She was a graduate of Blossburg High School, Class of 1941. She was the 1944 class valedictorian from Saint Joseph's Hospital, School of Nursing, Elmira, N.Y. Mary Catherine married Dr. Joseph F. Shedlawski on Nov. 15, 1947. After his death, she began a new career as a kindergarten teacher at the Wyoming Seminary Lower School, Forty Fort. Throughout her 30 year tenure with Wyoming Seminary, Mary Catherine educated hundreds of children. In 2008, she received the Joseph C. Donchess Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her many contributions to the school. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary Catherine was preceded in death by her daughter, Pauline Shedlawski, who died on April 28, 1973; her brothers, Francis, Don, Charles and Paul Boinski; her sisters, Virginia Manikowski and Betty Lupkowski. She is survived by her son, Joseph F. Shedlawski and Connie of Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. BREWER Ronald O.
Age 82, of Millerton, PA, died Saturday, January 19, 2013, at the Ashton HealthCare Facility in Athens, PA. Ronald was born on April 8, 1930 in Ashland, NY, son of the late Frank and Sarah (Moshier) Brewer. Ronald served our country in the US Army during the Korean War and retired from Thatcher Glass after many years of service. Ronald is survived by his sisters, Beverly (John) Stanley and Selma Randolph, both of Elmira, NY; brother, Vernon (Williemae) Brewer of TX; many nieces and nephews; close friend, Tom Bement. Ronald was predeceased by his sister, Bernice Heatherton; brothers, Welcom, Frank and Dana Brewer. Ronald's wish was that no services be held for him. BULLOCK Mary Ann Bullock Bonavita
age 68, of 8849 SR 3001, Meshoppen, Pa., (Auburn), died Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family after an extended illness. She was born on Sept. 30, 1944 in East Rush, Pa., a daughter of the late Gerald E. (Oct. 3, 1987) and Helen M. Yucas Bullock (Jan. 11, 1997). She was a 1962 graduate of Elk Lake High School and a 1963 graduate of Empire Beauty School. Mary Ann married John J. Bonavita on March 30, 1963. They would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this March. In her early years she worked for Bendix Corp. in South Montrose, Pa. She also had her own beauty shop in Meshoppen. In 1966 she and John purchased a farm in Auburn which is known today as the Jon-Ann Farms, which is still run by the family. Mary Ann also served as a Judge of Elections in Auburn Twp. for several years. Mary Ann is a member of the St. Bonaventure's/St. Joachim's Churches of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parrish. She loved attending 4H Dairy Shows to watch and help with her children and grandchildren at the Wyoming, Harford, Luzerne, and Bloomsburg fairs, as well as at the All American Dairy Show and the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Years ago she enjoyed coaching the Auburn softball and a Bonavita Farm softball team. Most importantly what she enjoyed best of all was doing things with her family. Besides he husband, John, she is survived by her children John J. Bonavita, Jr., Cherie A. Bonavita, Cindy L. Bonavita, Patty L. Bonavita, Chris B Bonavita, Lori M. Bonavita, and Stanley J. Bonavita and his wife Jennifer all of Auburn, Pa.; her grandchildren Alex J., Kyle R., Austin J. and Autumn J. Bonavita; her brother Chuck Bullock of Auburn Center, Pa.; her sister Geraldine Mokris and husband Myron of Auburn Center, Pa.; her extended family Kevin Palmer and Nicole "Nicki" Brooks; both of Springville, Pa., as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her brother Stanley J. Bullock (Jan. 1, 1976). BURGEE Helena J Burgee Heckman
age 67, of Wyalusing, Pa., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the Williamsport Regional Medical Center. Helena was born on Nov. 10, 1945, in Rowlesburg, W.Va., a daughter of the late Virgil and Pearl Mae Pipher Sigley. She met James Heckman in El Paso, Texas, they were married on Dec. 7, 1967, and they recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Helena enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-granddaughter. She enjoyed knitting and was an avid Bingo player. BUTCHKO Stephen T. Butchko
85, of Horseheads, NY and Winter Haven, FL, died peacefully Sunday 20 January 2013, in Corning Hospital, with his loving family by his side. Stephen was born in Nanticoke, PA, on 10 April 1927 to the late Stephen and Margaret (Jacobs) Butchko. Stephen married Marie Maylock on 2 September 1949 in Frederick, MD. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy, on the Franklin Delano Roosevelt aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Theater. Stephen graduated from the Mansfield Teacher's College in 1951 with a B.S. in Elementary Education. He completed his M.S. Degree in Education Administration from SUNY Cortland in 1970. His teaching career began at the Addison School District in 1951 followed by thirty-five years with the Corning Painted Post School District (C-PPSD). Mr. Butchko was a sixth grade teacher at Northside Grammar for numerous years, a Community School Director, a stint as an assistant principal at Northside Blodgett, and finishing his illustrious career as assistant principal at C-PPSD West High School, retiring in 1988. He was a caring and compassionate man who helped more than a few students obtain success through his guidance and dedication. Steve was a high school athlete where he lettered in basketball, football and baseball. Early in his teaching career, he was active as a basketball referee in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, IAABO. An avid golfer, Steve's love of the game led to his creation of the C-PPSD Teacher's Golf League. For years he could be pouring over that week's golf game stats. Other interest included stamp and coin collecting since childhood, as well as carpentry, woodworking and puttering around the family home he built himself in 1963. He also enjoyed travel with Marie going to Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. Another major component in Steve's life was the East Corning Volunteer Fire Department that he co-founded in 1959. For his service and dedication he was honored in 2010 at the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Department along with co-founder and dear friend Ralph Miller. Steve was a member of the All Saints Parish for fifty-eight years, served on the Parish Council, as well as volunteered countless hours for the St. Patrick's Saturday night Bingo events. A devoted family man as well as a committed community leader, Steve will be missed for being an incredibly kind and gentle man. Steve is survived by his four children: Stephen T. Butchko, III of Keuka, NY; Sharon Butchko-Goretti of Avon, NY; David Butchko of Syracuse, NY, and Dianne (Daniel) Box of Corning, NY; grandchildren: Matthew (Nicole) Lynough, Andrew (Jessica) Lynough, and Allison Goretti; Jacob Butchko; Margaret and Madeline Box; great-grandson, Michael Lynough; one sister, Margaret Kresge of Mount Vernon, VA; sister-in-law, Joan Martin of Cherry Hill, NJ, and several nieces and nephews. Born on August 31, 1934 in Montour Falls, Marilyn was the daughter of Lewis H. and Naomi (Groom) Clayson. Following graduation from the Odessa-Montour High School, Marilyn moved from the Croton-Millport area to Trumansburg where she fell in love with and married Alan W. Cramer. In addition to many hobbies and interests, Marilyn was a member of the Moose Lodge #426 in Montour Falls. Age 65 of Elmira, NY. He was born April 30, 1947 in Elmira, son of the late Gerard and Kathryn (Cherkis) Cleary and died Sunday, January 20, 2013 unexpectedly. He was predeceased by his brother Robert and is survived by his wife of 37 years Rebecca (Reinhart); sons Jeffrey, Ryan and Aaron; granddaughter Arielle all of Elmira; sisters and brothers-in-law Anna and Harold Jones of Big Flats, Mary and Rod Nordgren of Leesburg, FL; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Michael and Jackie Reinhart, Dianna Reinhart and Patrick and Cheryl Reinhart all of Elmira, Marty Reinhart of Phoenix, AZ, Greg and Courtney Reinhart of Wilseyville, NY along with several nieces and nephews including special nephews Brian Cleary of Elmira and Patrick Cleary of Montour Falls. Joe retired from the Elmira Correctional Facility in 2005 after 33 years as a Corrections Officer. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and was an avid sports fan. age 76, of Corning, NY, died on Friday, January 25, 2013 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira. Born on February 2, 1936 in Corning, she was the daughter of the late Frank and the late Anna (Berry) Buck. JoAnn married John Czado on Sept. 17, 1955 at St. Mary's Church in Corning. She was employed as a dental assistant for Corning Dental Associates, retiring in 1985. JoAnn was an avid reader, landscaper and sewer, specifically making quilts. Her greatest joy was traveling to spend time with her children and beloved grandchildren who were her greatest treasure. JoAnn is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, John Czado; sons, Michael (Brenda) Czado, Shawn (Ann) Czado; daughters, Deborah (Raymond) Gangarossa, Nancy (Steven) Vath, Maryann (Patrick) Brewer; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathleen (Gene) Latham, Rosemary Mixey, Diane Sutherland, Wanita (Henry) Knier; brother, John (Lynn) Buck; brother-in-law, Nicholas Milia; half-sisters, Ellen Gleason, Emma Cruz, Eunice Morse; half-brother, Frank Buck; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Formerly of Horseheads, NY, died at his home in Port Richey, FL at the age of 59. Bruce was born on June 17, 1953 in Elmira, NY to James and Edna (May) Davies. Bruce is survived by his wife Diane (McCommons) Davies, Port Richey, FL; daughter, Denise (Jamie) Baker; son, Brad (Christy) Davies; daughter, Andrea (Brian) Stein; grandchildren, Alyssa Davies, Matthew Baker, Mckenna Baker, Aidan Stein, Alexa Stein; siblings, Alan Davies, Elmira, NY, Eric (Brenda) Davies, Horseheads, NY, Carla (Terry) Garlock, Moss Point, MS. Bruce was predeceased by his mother, Edna Davies. Bruce lost a long four-year battle with cancer. He worked as a general contractor (Davies Contracting) in Horseheads where he raised his family. Bill was born in Elmira Heights on December 8, 1936, the second youngest of 14 children, to William and Lena Forsyth. Bill worked for the Public Works Department in Watkins Glen. He also worked and bowled at Johnny's Lanes and worked as a mechanic at Smalley's Garage. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie (Pike) Forsyth, 12 of his siblings and both parents. Survivors include his four children, Betty Hayes of Montour Falls, Kelly (Arthur) Bennett of Watkins Glen, Susan Williamson of Ohio, and William G. 90 God saw you were getting tired, and whispered, “Come to me”. Ruth L. Dixon 90, of Sayre, Pa., died at home on January 27, 2013. She was born on July 5, 1922 in Wilawana, Pa., a daughter of the late Sheridan and Cora (Kustaborger) Fravel. Ruth was a dedicated mother filling her home with love and happiness. She was a very outgoing person who loved life. She enjoyed fishing, going to casinos with friends and family, painting ceramics, and Yankee baseball. Ruth celebrated her 90th birthday by taking a hot air balloon ride and planned on going zip lining in the future. Ruth was predeceased by a newborn son; parents Sheridan and Cora Fravel; daughter-in-law Janet Swackhammer; grandson: Michael Swackhammer; and all 11 brother and sisters. Ruth is survived by her children: Robert Swackhammer Jr. of Sayre, Donna (Thomas) Limerick of Sayre, Richard (Donna) Swackhammer of Sayre, and Bernice (Wilbert) Reed of Sayre; grandchildren: Michelle (Thomas) Bennett, Randy Swackhammer, Bridget Swackhammer, Amy Swackhammer, and Vanessa Reed; great-grandchildren: Adam Bennett, Emily Bennett, Amanda Merrill Whyte, Brooke Rosh, Faith Swackhammer, Braxton Swackhammer, and Cody Swackhammer; many nieces, nephews, and special friends. 75 of Covington, passed on from a long-time illness on Wednesday, Jan.16, 2013. Born on Sept 26, 1937, he was the husband of Ruth (Hills) Frost and the son of Leonard and Irene (Woodard) Frost. Besides his wife, Ruth, he is survived by his three sons, John Frost of Courtland N.Y., Lenny Frost of Millerton, Quincy Root of Sayre; five stepchildren, Pamela Knapp, Alan Knapp, Stephen Knapp, Michael Knapp, TJ Knapp; two sisters, Arlene Williams of Gillett, Loretta Roupp of Columbia Cross Roads; two brothers, Harold Frost of Mainesburg, Clifford Frost of Mansfield; two grandchildren, Gretchen Knapp and Jamison Root. A longtime resident of the Millerton, PA community died peacefully, Sun. Jan. 20, 2013 while residing at Ashton Health Care, Athens, PA at the age of 94. Born on Nov. 7, 1918 in Phillipsburg, PA; Vernice was the daughter of the late, George & Mae Hastings Gearhart. She married the love her life, Clark Bird on Sept. 28, 1933 and he passed April 11, 2003. A homemaker, cherished wife and mother Vernice always put her family first. She loved music and played by ear. She was a longtime member of Hillcrest Seventh Day Adventist Church. Surviving is her loving family; children, Dean (Christine) Bird, Port Saint Joe, FL; Robert (Janice) Bird, Gillett, PA; Trudy (Duane) White, Lawrenceville, PA; George (Jean) Bird, Athens, PA; Larry (Wendy) Bird, Millerton, PA; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and family friends. In addition to parents and husband, Vernice was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Sandra Decker in 1980. Died on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Brooksville Regional Hospital at the age of 85 years old. He was born in Elmira Heights, NY and at the time of death was living in Spring Hill, FL. He is survived by his loving wife and "Angel" of 66 years, Norma Tucker Grover. John was preceded in death by his mother, Iva Grover and father, John Hazelton Grover. His life was blessed with three sons and their spouses, John (Marlene) Grover, Robert Grover, and Richard (Jacalyn) Grover. Along with his children the light of his life was his grandchildren, J.J. (Marisa) Grover, Aubrey (Jeremiah) Badell, Corina (Scott) Smith, Jill Grover, Michelle (Jason) Filer, Kelli (Bob) Sewell; and twelve great-grandchildren. John loved his family and friends dearly and was an avid golfer and fisherman who enjoyed all types of sports. Town of Southport Resident: Was born December 2, 1946 in Elmira, NY the son of the late Frank C. and Helen (Bianculli) Hammond Jr. died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 66. He was preceded in death by his parents and uncle, James Bianculli. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Coleen (Gessi) Hammond; beloved children, John, Cathy (Jeremy) Mazur, Tom (Cherie) and Marty (Lisa); brother, Bob (Cathy); sister, Sue; aunts, Geri Hammond and Marilyn Bianculli; adored grandchildren, Madison; Casey and Hayden; Matt, Taylor, Emma, Joe and Gabby; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Frank was a Veteran of the US Army proudly serving his country from 1966-1969. He retired from Verizon after 30 + years of faithful service as an installer/technician. He was a life member and past Chief of the Southport Volunteer Fire Department. Member of the New York State Association of Fire Chief's and of the Fireman's Association of the State of New York. He was also a communicant of St. Mary's Church. He was a dedicated walker at the Arnot Mall and did so with many of his friends. Frank was an avid/enthusiastic hockey fan to say the very least, and a season ticket holder with the Elmira Jackals Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira/Southport, NY on Saturday, January 26, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:45 PM. In 2002, Frank suffered a severe stroke and was forced into having open heart surgery as a result to prevent any further strokes. 94, died on January 12, 2013 in Mt. Dora, FL. She was born to Carrie Irene Soper and Arthur Clay Harris in Elmira NY on September 15, 1918. She was a retired secretary for the Elmira Board of Education, a member of Elmira Trinity Episcopal Church, St. Edward's Episcopal Church in Mt. Dora, FL, and the DAR. She is survived by children Bernice (Michael) Gordon of Tavares, FL, Diana (Rex) Keeney of Northridge, CA and James E. (Jeanne) Harvey of Moneta VA. Sisters Irene (Joseph) Paggio of Elmira, NY and Patricia Swithers of DeLand, FL. Five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A vibrant, beautiful woman who cherished her family, she found time for myriad activies including birding, sewing, camping, bridge and card playing, crocheting, antiquing, jewelry making, needle work and geneology research. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Edward's Episcopal Church in Mt. Dora, FL on February 7 at 11am. Interment following in the church's Rose Garden next to her beloved husband Leighton P. HOPKINS James Larue Hopkins
63, of Mansfield, died on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital, Wellsboro. He was born on Oct. 16, 1949, in Wellsboro; the son of Harry E. and Locady A. (Short) Hopkins. James was predeceased by his wife, Shannon Hopkins. James had been employed as a groundskeeper for a cemetery. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran, and served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. James was a member of the Mansfield VFW and the Blossburg American Legion. He lived in Erie, prior to his recent return to Tioga County. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, bead crafts depicting the different conflicts during service in Vietnam, and according to his brother, a great athlete. James is survived by three sons, James Jr., Shawn, Joshua, and a daughter Cassandra Hopkins. He had one brother and sister-in-law, John and Marietta Hopkins of Lakeland, Fla. and several nieces, nephews, and great- nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was also predeceased by four sisters, Marie Butler, Irene Carson, Virgie Knapp and Helen Hopkins. In keeping with James' wishes, there will be no services. JASKOLKA John Joseph James Jaskolka
age 82, died Saturday, January 19, 2013, at his home in Warrensburg, MO. He was born June 4, 1930, in Aliquippa, PA, the son of Joseph John and Catherine (Mencher) Jaskolka. On June 9, 1953, he was united in marriage to Christine Willig in Rudesheim, Germany. John was a 1949 graduate of Elmira High School in New York. In 1950, he joined the U.S. Naval Reserves and then served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1953 during the Korean War and retired as a Staff Sergeant. After the military, John worked as an over the road truck driver and mechanic for Russell Trucking Company in Sandusky, OH, and in 1984 was promoted to Terminal Manager in Wampum, PA. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the Warrensburg American Legion Post #131. John was survived by his wife Christine; two daughters: Elizabeth Hamilton and fiancé David Henry of Coraopolis, PA; and Elaine Guy and husband Dennis of Warrensburg; one brother, Edward R. Jaskolka and wife Roseann of Elmira, NY; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Frank S. Jaskolka; and two grandsons, Daniel and Aaron Hamilton. A private graveside service will be held with full military honors provided by Warrensburg VFW Post #2513, American Legion Post #131, and the Patriot Guards at the Warrensburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Warrensburg, MO. age 85, of Pine Street, Waverly, New York, died Saturday, January 26, 2013 at ElderWood Senior Care, Waverly, New York. She was born June 23, 1927 in Waverly, a daughter of Floyd and Susie (Hoover) Keene. After graduating from Waverly High School, she entered the work force and for the better part of her life was employed by Tioga General Hospital. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an avid bowler – involved for over 50 years - inducted in the Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame and a member of the 600 club. She was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Eastern Star and the Barton Methodist Church. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Millage of Barton, N.Y., in 1952 and her husband of over 43 years Clifford Millard of Waverly, N.Y., in 2009. She was also predeceased by her youngest daughter Patricia Millard in 2011, her stepson Fred Millard in 2004, her daughter in-law Arleta Millage in 2008 and her brother Ed Keene in 2012. —A dispatch was received on Sunday morning announcing the death at San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday night of Mrs. Sarah J. Elliott, wife of Hon. Mortimer F. Elliott, of New York, formerly of Wellsboro. The cause of Mrs. Elliott's death was pneumonia. She had been an invalid for years and had resided in the South for a long time on account of her health. She was about 59 years of age. Sbe was a daughter of the late Israel Merrick, of Delmar, and a sister of Major George W. Merrick, of this borough and Postal Clerk Ellis J. 81, of Tunkhannock, PA passed away, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 at Golden Living Center, Tunkhannock, with her loving family by her side. Born July 6, 1931 in Sayre, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Arlie (Carrington) Mix. Her husband, Harold Otto Schillinger, Jr., predeceased her in 1993. She was a graduate of the Waverly High School Class of 1949. After high school she married Harold Otto Schillinger, Jr. in 1959. They owned and operated Crystella Dairy Farm in Elk Lake from 1959 to 1985 when they bought the Edgefield Court Motel in Wyalusing. Phyllis owned it until 1995, two years after her husband, Harold passed away. She retired to her home in Lake Carey, and in later years became a resident of Tunkhannock. Betty was born on July 26, 1928 in Corning to Charles and Frances (Soich) Morton. She married Gene Carapella in 1948 in Corning and was preceded in death by him in 2010. Betty enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, and playing euchre, pinochle and bingo. For many years she was an avid gardener and was especially proud of her beautiful roses and perennial gardens. Always an animal lover, Betty doted on her family pets throughout the years along with tending to the numerous backyard birds and other wildlife in the yard. Betty appreciated the staff and friends she made at the Bethany Village Orchard View dementia care unit where she called home these last two years. Her survivors include two daughters, Judith O'Connell of Corning and Janice Merola (Jarious Peterson) of Painted Post; five grandchildren: Christopher O'Connell of Corning, Stephanie (Steven) Garner of Corning, Amie (Richard) Bills of Big Flats, Michael Merola (Stephen Santangelo) of Willington, CT, and Scott Merola (Vicki Soper) of Corning; great grandchildren: Nicholas, Alexander, Hannah, Emily, Bryan, Grace and Tanner; several nieces and nephews. She was born on June 16, 1925 in Groton, N.Y., a daughter of the late Floyd and Ida Dutton Murray. Margie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who enjoyed cooking. She is predeceased by her son Dennis Morris in 1995, and a sister Ruth Bell. NAGLE Warren C. “Bud” Nagle
M.D. of Athens, Pa., died peacefully at home on Jan. 20, 2013. He was born on Sept. 4, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pa., a son of the late Dr. Frank O. and Alice Zahm Nagle. Warren graduated from Episcopal Academy, and then joined the U.S. Army. Following his honorable discharge from the service, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College and Harvard Medical School. He interned at Lankenau Hospital, followed by a four year residency in Urology at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. Upon completion of his residency, he opened a private practice in Carlisle, Pa., and then joined the Guthrie Clinic in 1962. Dr. Nagle was appointed Chief of Urology, serving in that position for 24 years, retiring in 1991 after practicing at Guthrie Clinic for 29 years. As a child, Warren spent summers at the family home in Ocean Grove, N.J., and after his retirement, he enjoyed spending time there with his family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to serving in his community upon retirement, he spent much of his time gardening, reading, and traveling to many parts of the world. One of his greatest pleasures was traveling to visit his grandchildren and attending their numerous school and athletic events. Warren was a long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church, Bradford County Humane Society, and Spaulding Memorial Library. He is predeceased by his brother W. William Nagle, M.D. Warren is survived by his wife of 59 years Ardelle Hemmig Nagle, at home; children Warren C. (Joyce) Nagle Jr. of White River, Vt., Sheryl E. Elmira: Age 86, died on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Margaret was born February 4, 1926 in Bergen, Norway the daughter of Cornelius and Martha (Okland) Olsen. Her husband Willis J. Skidmore predeceased her in 1969. Margaret is survived by her daughter Barbara Skidmore, Elmira; son and daughter-in-law, Arthur and Susan Skidmore, Elmira; grandchildren, Eric Skidmore with wife Jennifer and children, Seanna, Samara and Neil, Lowman; Emily Coletta with husband Joel, Elmira. Margaret was a school photographer working in Long Island, NY prior to coming to Elmira to be near her children. Active in the community she was a volunteer with the Food Bank and Community Kitchen. Margaret enjoyed gardening, writing poems, traveling, and walking the beaches in New Jersey. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 4, 2013 at 12:00 noon at Bethany Lutheran Church, 256 S. Walnut Street, Elmira. This day would have been Margaret's 87th birthday. 89 of South Waverly, Pa., died Monday evening, January 21, 2013 at Ashton Health Care in Athens, Pa. Gladys was born in Waverly, N.Y., on December 24, 1923 the daughter of Paul and Hattie (Riley) Reinbold. She was a graduate of Waverly High School and Elmira Business Institute and in early years was employed in personal finance in Sayre for five years. She was later employed by the Kasco Mill in Waverly, which later became Agway Mills, for 25 years until her retirement in 1986. Gladys was a member of the Epiphany Parish in Sayre and was a member of the former St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in South Waverly. Gladys enjoyed serving as a volunteer at the Epiphany School for many years, caring for her dogs, and reading. Surviving are her husband, Leon H. Weaver at home, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Reinbold and sister, Elizabeth Sullivan. A memorial mass will be held at the Church of the Epiphany, South Elmer Ave. Sayre, Pa., at a later date. Interment will be private in St. James Cemetery, Waverly, N.Y. David is survived by his wife, Emma Lou (Ross) Rupert. Prior to his retirement, David was employed in the bridge construction industry. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wellsboro, PA and was an avid golfer. age 80, of Corning, NY died Friday, January 25, 2013, at Corning Hospital. Don was born on December 23, 1932 in Dansville, NY to James and Dorothea (Locey) Sanford. He married Eva Allen in Corning in 1954. He served in the Air Force as an electrician and mechanic from 1952 to 1954. He worked for Corning Glass Works as a machinist and toolmaker, and retired in 1995 with 35 years of service to the company. He was a member of American Legion and V.F.W. in Corning. Don loved woodworking and made cabinets and furniture. He is survived by his wife, Eva; three sons, Donald (Kay) Sanford of Hammondsport, Earl (Angela) Sanford of Campbell, and Dale (Crystal) Sanford of Dixon, MO; sister, Dorothy (Donald) Manning of Branchport, NY; brother, Ronald (Martha) Sanford of Coopers Plains; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Shirley Sanford of Coopers Plains; several nieces and nephews. 74, Wellsboro, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. She was the wife of the late Gerald G. Miller who predeceased her on Feb. 22, 1998. Clora was a member of Morris United Methodist Church. She was involved with her church and community, volunteering for many events. She enjoyed reading and sewing. SHORT Priscilla Ann (Sally) Short Taylor Lott Chabot Haner
of Nichols, joined her soul mate, Marvin Haner, on January 25, 2013. He was waiting for her with Barney their faithful companion by his side. Born Jan. 20, 1939, to Lewis Francis and Naomi Grace (Llewellyn) Short; she was nicknamed Sally by her big sister, Vivian. Sally never followed the easy path, but rather enjoyed blazing her own trails. A friend of Bill W. for 31 years, Sally went to college late in life, choosing Addiction Counseling as her final career path. She had found her passion and she was sought after by many organizations. She worked for Clifton Springs Alcohol Rehab, Chit-Chat is Westfield, Pa., and The Dick Van Dyke Treatment Center in Willard, N.Y. It was at Willard that she picked up her last nickname, “Cocaine Sally,” because she worked with the cocaine addicts. Many lives were changed for the better because of her passion. Sally is survived by her children Donna (Dan) Martin and David Taylor; her grandchildren: John (Crystal) Martin and their children, Emily, Hannah and Gideon of Lake Placid, Ashley (Peter) Martin and their children Micah and Abigail of Cortland, and Christopher Witty of Cortland; and her sisters, Vivian Settel and Caroline Smith; along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her loving brothers: Alan, Lewis, Douglas, Frederick, Thomas, Gary and Danny Short; and several nieces and nephews. STEWART James "Jim" Stewart
longtime Towanda area resident, died unexpectedly at the Robert Packer Hospital on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2013. Jim was born Jan. 4, 1946, in Norristown, Pa., a son of the late Ardemus and Inez Stewart. Jim graduated from Central Bucks High School in Doylestown, Pa. in 1963. He then attended Kutztown University through his junior year. Following his college years, Jim was employed as a cabinet maker in the Philadelphia area. During this time, he also moonlighted as a musician for various bands. In 1973, Jim relocated to Towanda where he was employed as a salesman for Rynone Industries for a number of years. In 1980 he entered into business as Kitchens by Jim Stewart on Main Street, Towanda which he owned and operated for three years. He was subsequently employed by Harvey Chernosky at Superior Paints in Towanda until 1994 and later by Fairchild's Hardware until his health began declining. Jim was active in the Towanda community having helped to organize Summerfest, which later became Riverfest. Jim was also active in the Towanda Business Association and served as an officer for several years. Jim is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Cullen J. Stewart and Kimberly Stewart of Portland, Maine; grandson Rory Stewart of Portland, Maine; brother and sister-in-law John S. and Wendy Stewart of Doylestown, Pa.; his constant companion Murphy; and his family friends at the office of Joseph Cama MD; Cookies Canteen; and the Red Rose Diner. After retiring in 1991 as a registered dietician, she and her husband returned home to operate her family's business, Swisher's Country Store. WALKER Suzanne L. Walker Kleckner
of Painted Post, N.Y., went home to her Lord on January 14, 2013. Born on December 6, 1941, in Waverly, N.Y., to James (Jimmy Tex) and Marjorie Walker. After marriage in 1964, she resided in Ithaca, N.Y., until moving to Painted Post in 1999. She graduated from Waverly High School in 1960. Although educated as a radiologic technologist, she chose to be a homemaker and raise her family. She drew faith through her church communities of St. Luke Lutheran Church and later Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The bulk of her energy expended outside the home was spent caring for others. She was dedicated to her church and community, sharing her talents as a Sunday school leader, Scout leader, and class mother, among many other contributions of her time. She touched many lives with her courage and faith. She was predeceased by her parents and brothers, William and David Walker. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Thomas; children William (Paige) Kleckner, Michael Kleckner, Kathryn Kleckner Lawson and Thomas (Megan) Kleckner; beloved grandchildren: Kyle Keri, Nicole, Casen, Aubrey, Brevin and Max; and her brothers James, Robert and John (Janet). Sue was a loving and compassionate wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend who will be missed dearly by all whose lives were touched by hers. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the St. Luke Lutheran Church, 109 Oak Ave., Ithaca, N.Y. The family will have a private committal service. 58, of South Waverly, Pa., passed away Friday, January 25, 2013 at home, following declining health. Cheryl was born February 8, 1954 at Straights Corners, N.Y., the daughter of Robert A. and Ruth Esther Adams Warfle. She was formerly employed by the Animal Care Sanctuary in East Smithfield, Pa. Surviving are her sons, Jeffery Scott Smith and his fiancé Amanda Holton of South Waverly, Willard Kenneth Smith Jr. of South Waverly; grandson, Willard Kenneth Smith III of South Waverly; sisters, Jean Kinsley of Sayre, Karolyn Smith of New Albany, Kathleen Hunter of Quicks Bend, Ruth Warfle of LeRaysville; brothers, Lawrence (Phyllis) Adams of Bath, N.Y., John Warfle Sr. and companion Betty Rought of Wyalusing; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and her companion, James Hall of South Waverly. 73, of Albany, died Friday, January 18, 2013 at Albany Memorial Hospital. Joan was born in Elmira, NY. She retired as a Clerk for the NYS Department of Labor. Predeceased by her husband, Randall Dayton in 2008; a sister, Barbara Jackson; and one granddaughter, Alicia Hoover. Joan is survived by her two sons, Mark (Roberta Clark) Hoover and Michael (Wendy) Hoover; her three brothers, Michael Watach, Jack Watach and James Watach; two grandchildren, Joshua and Daniel Hoover. WHITAKER Louise Converse
79, of Westfield, PA, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013 in the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, Wellsboro, PA. Born February 12, 1933, in Genesee, PA, she was the daughter of Preston A. and Lucy P. Gardner Whitaker. On September 11, 1951, in Genesee, she married Vernie H. Converse, who predeceased her in 1996. She was a school bus driver in the Northern Potter and Northern Tioga School Districts for 25 years, retiring in 1990. Surviving are: two sons, Wayne Converse of Westfield, PA and Dean Converse of Leola, PA; a daughter, Diane Patton of Philadelphia, PA; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Deidre Newberry; and a daughter-in-law, Tina Converse. 76 years old, of Elmira, NY, died on January 26, 2013. The calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2013 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm and 4:00pm to 6:00pm at Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Ave, Elmira NY. The funeral services will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 11:00am at Olthof Funeral Home and will be officiated by Minister James Radford. Ronald was born in Elmira, NY on September 15, 1936. He graduated from Edison High School in Elmira Heights, NY. Ronald was married to Linda Stanton on March 23, 1963; they were married 49 years. Ronald was a Veteran of the US Air Force and worked as a Bartender for Moretti's Restaurant in Elmira, NY for more than 20 years. He enjoyed playing Euchre, putting jigsaw puzzles, together, drinking a cold beer and spending time with his family. After his retirement he was actively involved in volunteering his time with RSVP where he and his dog Baily would take people to their Doctors appointments in the local community, and he performed deliveries for Meals on Wheels for a number of years. Ronald is survived by his loving wife Linda; his sons, James (wife Carol), Keith, Mark (wife Patty), Eugene (wife Tina); 9 grandchildren, Alan, Stephen, Brandon, Jennifer, Mark, Bryan, Dominick, Hunter, Aiden and 1 great grandchild, Michael. WOODHOUSE Lois Phillips (O’Brien, Woodhouse)
72, died at her home in Bath on Tuesday January 22, 2013 after an extended battle with cancer. A retired nurse, she graduated from Corning Northside in 1957, and Arnot Ogden School of Nursing in 1959. Lois would shortly after marry Robert O’Brien. Lois worked as a nurse and later head nurse at Arnot Ogden Hospital from 1959 until 1979 and at the Bath Veteran’s Administration from 1979 until 1998. She later earned her BSN at Elmira College in 1992. Lois was a member of the Harvest Baptist Church and Kings Daughters and Sons; she had a strong faith in God. Lois and her husband Dewaine, wintered at their home in Winter Haven, Florida. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gospel concerts, reading, cooking, gardening, shopping and traveling and had visited the Caribbean, England, Israel, Alaska and Vancouver, B.C. while her health still permitted. Lois was predeceased by her husband Robert in 1999, son Timothy in 1968 and her parents Fred in 2000 and Margaret in 2004 Woodhouse of Wayne, NY. Lois is survived by her loving husband Dewaine of Bath, NY., her daughters Pamela (Bret) O’Brien Paige of Campbell, NY., Ann (Dennis) Taft of Beaver Dams, NY., her sons Patrick O’Brien of Pulteney, NY., and David (Ken) O’Brien-Davis of Palmyra, NY., step son Craig of El Segundo, CA., her sisters Joyce (Larry) O’Brien of Jacksonville, FL., Susan Woodhouse of Alden, NY., and brother Donald (Kathy) Woodhouse of Hemlock, NY., as well as nieces and nephews, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Lois was a woman of great compassion, hospitality, humility and strength. She will be missed sorely by those whose lives she’d touched. Age 81 of Thurston St., Elmira died Saturday, January 12, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband, James McMasters in 1978. She is survived by her sons, Jim McMasters of Springfield, VA, Dale McMasters of Elmira, NY; and daughter, Dorothy (Curt Anderson) McMasters of Elmira, NY; grandchildren, Timothy, Jennifer, Andrea and Alex; great grandchildren, Nick, Kaden and, Kayleigh; numerous nieces and nephews; siblings, Nellie, Isaac, Mary, Bob, Rich and Lucille. She is also predeceased by her mother, Emma; grandchild, Andy; and brothers, Tom, Will, Don, and Bert. Mildred was a waitress at the former Nicks Restaurant in Horseheads. She was a member of the American Legion and VFW Ladies Auxiliary and also an avid bingo player, as well a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and cousin to all.
