WANCK Walter Eugene Wanck
of Naples, Fla., and Saratoga Springs, N.Y., crossed over gently, Sept.
20, 2010 in Naples at age 90 of rapidly progressing pancreatic cancer.
Until less than a month before death he was in his usual excellent health.
Despite the quickness of death, he was able to emotionally and spiritually
prepare himself for it and accept it. He did so in his typical authentic,
friendly and loving style. He was known best by relatives, friends and
acquaintances for his profound loving kindness which he radiated in an
entirely nonjudgmental and embracing manor. He was born at home in rural
northern Pennsylvania where he was raised with his older brother, Bob and
his sister Marg. Although he attended church, nature was his true church
where he said he could most easily find and enjoy the presence of God in
all things. He attended high school in Towanda, Pa., where he met Beatrice
Dewey, to whom he was lovingly devoted in marriage for 66 years until her
passing 3 years ago. One year after her passing he fell in love with Carolyn
who'd been a dear friend of his and Beas for 20 years. Following
his marriage to Bea, they moved around the south before Walt attended the
Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia from which he graduated
in 1949. Partly because of having poor vision himself he followed the calling
of helping others to have improved vision. They moved to Waynesboro, Pa.,
and raised their son Bick while Walt practiced Optometry for nearly 40
years. Their only child, Bick went to college as a varsity swimmer at Penn
State, graduated from medical school and practices Psychiatry in Saratoga
Springs, N.Y., where he lives with his wife Ramona. Walt's family
includes his granddaughters, Kristen Tracy-Wanck and Sarah Tracy-Wanck,
now in their 20s, who he dearly cherished, and loved. He lived in Naples,
Fla., near his loving nephew, Jim and his wife, Claudia and their children,
Nicholas and Robert who were like children and grandchildren to him. Walt
dearly loved all his nephews and niece and their families. His nephews
include Ronald Wanck of Athens, Pa., Deborah Singer of Waynesboro, Pa.,
who predeceased him, Jack McCracken of Forrest Hills, Md., Jeff McCracken
of Waynesboro, Pa., and Raymond and Jeffrey Dewey of the Richmond, Va.,
area. Walt dearly loved all of them and their families. Services were held
Thursday, Sept. 23, at Hodges Funeral Home at Naples Memorial Gardens,

? KNIGHT ean Eleanor Marion
Jean Eleanor Marion Knight died with grace, dignity and courage in
her Bethany Village home on Sept. 29 after a brief but difficult illness.
She was 89. The mother of Margaret Knight of Ballston Spa, NY, and the
Rev. Jonathan Knight of Horseheads, she was the widow of the Rev. John
Knight. In addition to her children, Jean is survived by her sister, Margaret
Schiffert of Hyde Park, VT; grandson, Stephen Mutka; and granddaughters,
Erin Nakamura (Daniel) and Rebecca Flowers (Eric); daughter-in-law, Phyllis
Bishop; three nieces, two nephews, their six children, and countless friends.
Her son-in-law, Bruce Adams (Margaret) predeceased her. The granddaughter,
daughter, wife, mother, and mother-in-law of ministers, Jean's life was
focused on the church and practicing her faith in daily living. She served
as a faithful and energetic pastor's wife for close to 35 years, led Christian
education classes for children and adults, mentored and encouraged friends,
and served on countless leadership committees. Educated at Randolph Macon
and the Univ. of Connecticut, Jean worked as a librarian in the New Haven
(CT), Springfield (MA) and Thetford (VT) Libraries; in retirement she was
an energetic volunteer and member of the Board of the Lanpher Memorial
Library in Hyde Park. She was an award-winning poet whose annual Christmas
messages date to1950. In addition to the miracle of Christmas, much of
her poetry focused on the inspiration she drew from the natural world.
A lover of beauty, Jean created spectacular perennial gardens wherever
she lived. The riot of daffodils that circle the lawns and extend into
the woods of her former home in Hyde Park will welcome spring for years
to come. Memorial services will be held in Horseheads and Hyde Park, VT,
at a later date. She will be buried in Hyde Park. - Elmira Star Gazette,
