EVANS Harry W.
Harry W. Evans died in his sleep Saturday, August 14, 2010, at his
home in Interlaken. Born on September 2, 1949, Harry left his wife of 40
years, Susan (Kitchin) his sons Eric Evans (Christina) and Brian Evans,
grandchildren Matthew and Megan Evans, and sister Janet Sue (Al) Rice.
He was predeceased by his parents and his daughter Vickie Lee Evans and
her child John Michael Evans. Harry dedicated his life to his family, his
Union (UAW Local 2300) and his work (maintenance mechanic and material
handler at Cornell University). He also loved playing (when younger) and
watching baseball, hockey, football and car racing, buying and selling
cars, going to auctions and yard sales where he frequently purchased gadgets
and other items; offering advice to anyone he knew or met about anything;
playing with and enjoying his dogs particularly the Chihuahuas; helping
those in need; and eating. His children and supporting his wife and family
meant everything to him. He fiercely protected his kids and worked constantly
to earn enough to support his family and to make sure his wife would be
taken care of. This meant he often had to work more than one job and to
always seek to buy and sell cars or other things to earn extra money. He
was an especially loving grandfather to Matthew and Megan, always looking
out for their welfare, buying or giving them small and large gifts, taking
them to fairs, amusement parks, picnics and meals. UAW Local 2300 was an
important part of his life for 30 years. He played a huge role in organizing
the Union for Cornell service and maintenance workers in 1979-81, and in
its subsequent operation. He served the Union and his co-workers as organizer,
steward, Vice-President, President for five years and for the last ten
years as Peer Counselor. The unofficial Union historian, his activism over
all these years along with a sharp and detailed memory meant that he knew
more than anyone about the details and personalities involved in the Union.
He never lost a minute in "talkin' union" and trying to convince any and
all about the virtues and value of unions. He jumped at every opportunity
to support workers on strike or who otherwise needed actions of solidarity,
and always urged everyone to "Buy American." In recent years he worked
as a Peer Counselor for the Union, cherishing every chance he could get
to help those in need, to give advice and counsel, and to assist individuals
who needed treatment for alcohol or drug dependency. He was always ready
to go the extra mile for these union brothers and sisters who came to him
for help and his work and assistance saved many lives. Born in Ithaca,
and growing up on Cherry Street, he took pride in being a "Rhiner" and
was a football lineman at Ithaca High School. His love of sports continued
after high school. In the 1970s he was a part-owner and active with the
Ithaca Stars, a men's semi-pro hockey team, and also served for many years
as a commissioner with the Ithaca Softball League. Ever the organizer,
Harry also was a driving force in the development of Ithaca's Union Fields.
He actively followed his favorite teams on radio and tv, and sometimes
fell asleep with the radio on his chest while listening to one game or
another. He definitely liked to "wheel and deal," and claimed to have been
the youngest registered car dealer in New York State - when he was 16.
But he liked to buy other things as well, and was never averse to then
selling them - at a small profit of course. He was never what one would
call a shrinking violet. Anyone who crossed his path was quickly engaged
in conversation and in short order Harry would know much about their lives
and they would know much about Harry's. While in later years he tried to
trim down and professed a newly found love of fruits, vegetables and yogurt,
he loved to eat and was never mistaken for the Thin Man. His many years
working and organizing the grill at the annual Labor Day picnic will especially
be remembered for the Delmonico steaks that would materialize after the
burgers and hot dogs were done and which he shared among those who had
volunteered their time with him. He will always be remembered also for
his heroism in the face of adversity, particularly his own illnesses. Calling
hours will be held 4-6:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 18 at the Wagner Funeral
Home, 110 S. Geneva Street, Ithaca. A memorial service will be held 5:00
p.m., Thursday, August 19, at Robert Purcell Marketplace Eatery (3rd floor,
Robert Purcell Community Center), Cornell University. In lieu of flowers
the family requests you consider a donation to either the Robin Fund (c/o
