ABELL - Emerson W. Abell, 84, well respected and much loved resident
of Warren Center died
at his home on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010. A life long resident of Warren Center,
Emerson was born on Feb. 3, 1926, a son of the late DeLeon and Bernice
(Pendleton) Abell. He attended school in Warren Center until the 11th grade and
was a graduate of Vestal High School. On Oct. 8, 1949, he married Alice Allyn
and together they shared many happy memories building Abell Farms. A
hardworking entrepreneur Emerson was the owner of Emerson Abell Construction
which continues to be operated by his son Daniel. Devoted to his community,
Emerson was a long time member of the Warren Township Fire Department where he
served as fire warden for over 50 years. In addition, Emerson served on the
Northeast Bradford School Board, was a member of the Warren Center United
Methodist Church, shared fellowship with his friends at the Warren Center
Independent Bible Church and the Warren Center Senior Center. Always willing to
assist others in need, Emerson was a founding member of HIP a mission group who
assisted Midwest Indian Missions. He also was a committee member for the
Bradford County Republican Committee, a member of the Gideons, and the Union of
Operating Engineers. Emerson was an avid reader of Louis L'Amour books and
enjoyed spending time out doors. His greatest pleasure was found being
surrounded by his loving family. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working
hands at rest. God broke out hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
Emerson is survived by his wife of 60 years, Alice (Allyn) Abell; his six
children: Tom (Mary Kay) Abell, Jerry (Bonnie) Abell, Robert D. (Mary) Abell,
Dennis (Shirley) Abell, Daniel (Sharon) Abell, Mary (Glenn) Wolfe; a brother,
Dee (Anna) Abell, sisters Martha (Bob) Dewing and Grace Dewing; brother-in-law
and sister-in-law Ashley and Cora Allyn; his special grandchildren, Tommy
(Megan), Tyson, Matthew (Missy), Justin (Anna), Jessica, Corey, Todd, Khristina
(Micah), Rindy, Joe, Robert (Christian), Roxanna (Maurice), Pamela, Clyde,
Angela, Nicholas, Jonathan (Becky) Heidi (Nathan), Robin (Austin), Bryan
(Natalie), Anne-Shirley, Denise, Jared, Raeanna (Chris), Daniel, Jacqueline,
Benjamin, Samuel, Stacy and Craig; great-grandchildren Noah, Ayla, Sylas,
Finnegan, Lochlann, Isabella, Joe, Evelyn, Janna, Paul, Matthew, Malachi, Elise,
Lanna, Sara, Ryan, Luke, Hannah, Noah and Addison. Several nieces, nephews and
their families also survive. Emerson was predeceased by his parents DeLeon and
Bernice (Pendleton) Abell; his mother-in-law and father-in-law: Merle and Mary
Allyn; brother-in-law Max Dewing; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Beva and
Milo Wilson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Audra and Ellen Allyn.
Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation and time of
sharing memories from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at the Sutfin Funeral
Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. A memorial service and celebration of a life
well lived will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18 with Pastor Dale
Anschuetz of the Warren Center Independent Bible Church and Emerson's grandson

ALLEN - Donald Dean Allen, 71, of the Colonial Towers, Towanda, Pa.,
died
Thursday evening, Feb. 11, 2010 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. Donald
was born Dec. 5, 1938 in Sayre, Pa., a son of the late Donald Theron Allen and
Susie Leona Gowin Allen. In earlier years, he was employed on the farms of
David Moon in Evergreen, Pa., and Carlton Dibble in New Era, Pa. Donald was
later employed by the Hillside S.P.C.A. in Schuylkill, Pa. for several years.
He was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by:
sisters Susie Kasson of Athens, Pa., Lila Allen of Benton, Pa.; sisters and
brothers-in-law: Beverly and Roy Morris of Bangor, Pa., Kathleen and John Teel
II of Wyalusing, Pa., Melanie and Jody Pysher of Bangor, Pa.; sister-in-law,
Margaret Allen of Evergreen, Pa.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and two
aunts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Duane
Douglas Allen, on Feb. 23, 2009. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on
Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave.,
Towanda, Pa. A private interment service will be held at the convenience of the
family. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions may

ALLMENDINGER - DILLER, Barbara A.
Age 61, of Maitland FL, formerly of Elmira, passed peacefully on March 25, 2010
in Florida, surrounded by her loving family. Barbara was born on July 27, 1948
in Flushing, NY, daughter of the late Robert and Clara (Dawson) Allmendinger.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 40 years, Tom; son and daughter-in-law,
Brian and Allison Diller; daughter Amy Diller all of Maitland, FL; sister, Mary
Rizza of Phoenix AZ; brothers, Robert Allmendinger with Cindy Sullivan, and
Scott Allmendinger with wife Sue, all of Elmira; granddaughters, Tristyn and
Jaelyn of Maitland; brother-in-law John Rizza of Florida; nieces Kathleen Rizza
of Ft. Wayne IN, Kerry Rizza of Payson AZ, Kellee Johnson of Elmira; nephews,
Michael Rizza of Lincoln NE and Michael Allmendinger of Elmira; and special
friend Madixx "Mookie" Burge of Elmira. Barbara was retired from the
Elmira City School District having been a secretary at Broadway Middle School.
Barbara was a very loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and loyal friend.
She will be missed terribly. God bless you, Barb, and rest in peace. Visitation

Road, Winter Park FL on Monday, March 29, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Her

AYRES - Robert Leroy Ayres, age 64, of Leroy, PA died
peacefully on Sunday, May 11, 2008 at his home with his loving family at his
side, following a lengthy battle with multiple myeloma. Born on May 1, 1944 in
East Smithfield, PA, he was a son of the late Herman Clinton and Hazele Garnant
Ayres. He graduated from the St. Augustine High School a member of the
class of 1962. He married the former Bonnie L. Elchak of Lopez, PA in
Dushore on December 12, 1969. They moved to Florida where Bob began
working in the Ag business as a diesel mechanic. He worked his way up to
become the Farm Manager of Sunshine Biscuit Farms, a division of Frito-Lay, St.
Augustine, FL. He later became the service manager for the Florida Truck
and Tractor Co. of Palatka, FL. In 1972, he started his own business,
Bob’s Manufacturing and Repair, in Elkton, FL and operated it until his health
forced him to retire in 2002. At this time he and Bonnie retired to
Pennsylvania and built a home in LeRoy. Mr. Ayres attended
the East Canton United Methodist Church. He was a loving spouse and
father and enjoyed spending as much time as he could with his children.
He also loved the outdoors and especially hunting and fishing. Surviving is his
loving spouse of 38 years: Bonnie, at home; son and daughter-in-law Robert David
& Rachel Ayres, Jacksonville, FL; daughter and son-in-law, Alison &
Jason Overstreet, Garner, NC; brothers and sisters-in-law: Richard &
Marlene Ayres, Milan, PA; Ronald & Mary Jean Ayres, East Troy, PA; Larry
& Jeanne Ayres, Cotter, AR; sisters and brothers-in-law: Shirley &
Walter Keller, Wellsburg, NY, Waneta Ashley, St. Augustine, FL, Marilyn &
Ernie Shout, Elmira, NY, Joan & Robert Sweat, Green Cove Springs, FL;
brother-in-law & spouse: Nicholas & Judy Elchak, Powell, PA; grandchildren:
Dylan and Emily Overstreet. He was predeceased by an infant sister Miriam,
brother, Duane Ayres and sister Carolyn Knight. Funeral Services were held May

BARRETT - Laura Hartford, 59, of Canton, PA, RR3, died
unexpectedly Friday morning, May 2, 2008 at her home. Born on November 5, 1948
in Meadville, PA, Laura Jeanne was a daughter of the late William and Jeanne
(Hubbell) Barrett. She was the wife of the late Donald “Donnie”
Hartford. Surviving are her children, Jamie Nelson of West Palm Beach, FL and
Cory Tucker of Canton; a grandson, Ethan V. Dieguez; a brother, Richard
(Florence) Barrett of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; several nieces, nephews, cousins,
dear friends and her beloved dog, Baby. In addition to her parents, Laura was
predeceased by her husband, Donnie Hartford on July 15, 1999. Laurie will be
lovingly remembered as an exceptional person, inside and out. She was an independent
and strong-willed woman who cared whole-heartedly about her family. She
enjoyed baking. A memorial service and life celebration will be held 3 p.m.

BERMAN - COHEN, Karen F.
Born on March 30, 1958 in Elmira, New York, died peacefully on March 23, 2010
after a courageous battle with cancer. Karen was raised in Elmira, New York, attended
Syracuse University and for the past 22 years resided in Northern (Woodbridge
and Dumfries) Virginia. Karen was extremely dedicated to her family, caring,
hardworking, thoughtful, lighthearted and honest. Her warm personality and
constant consideration for others earned her countless friends in her community
and through her work for Giant Foods over the past two decades. Karen was
predeceased by her beloved parents Bernard and Lydia Berman and brother Rubin
Berman. She is survived by her daughter Rebecca Cohen, six sisters, four
brothers and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on
Sunday, March 28, 2010 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609

BESANCENEY - MITCHELL, Betty (Besanceney)
formerly of Elmira, NY - Age 83, of Prince Charles Court, Daytona, FL, died
on Friday, March 19, 2010 in the hospital. Born November 15, 1924 in Elmira,
NY. She worked at Remington Rand and then worked for Chemung County as a Clerk.
Ending her working career as the Clerk for the Town of Elmira, leaving in 1980
and moving to Florida. She is survived by her daughters, Betty Jeanne Holleran,
of Elmira, Sharon (William) Michaels, of Winter Park, FL., Roberta (David)
Knickerbocker, of Murfreesboro, TN; son, Douglas (Jennifer) Mitchell, of
Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Beth Ann and Patrick Holleran, Joe, Jeremy and
Kelly Mitchell, Billy and Brian Michaels, Scott Knickerbocker; along with 14
great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Jack Mitchell, of TX.; sister-in-laws,
Mrs. Sidney Mitchell, of NJ and Mrs. Thomas Mitchell, of Elmira. She is also
survived by many other family members and very special friend, Gene Eckles.
Predeceasing her were her parents, Ross and Violet Besanceney; stepfather,
Lewis Clayson; brothers, Allen and Robert; sister, Joyce Weisenflu; grandson,
Douglas Knickerbocker; and son-in-law, Daniel Holleran. Memorial services will

BOECKER Donald L. Boecker - 53, April 5th, 2010 - Donald
L. Boecker, age 53, of Forksville, PA, died
on Monday, April 5, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Towanda, PA. He was born on
March 4, 1957, in Sayre, PA, a son of the late Harry and Norma (Gilbert)
Boecker. Donald was employed as an auto mechanic. He was a member of the
Mildred American Legion Post No. 452, and Evergreen Lodge No. 163
F.&A.M., of Monroeton, PA. He enjoyed working and was always busy and
enjoyed helping others. He especially enjoyed his time spent fishing, hunting,
gardening and farming. He leaves surviving his wife: Debra Boecker, at home; by
his children: Jeremy (Jessica) Boecker, of Forksville, PA, Brooke Boecker and
fiancé Titus Sheets, of Picture Rocks, PA; by his sisters and brothers: Jane
(Jerome) Jimerson, of Omaha, NE; Lora M. (Brock) Deihl, of Danville, PA,
Caroline Hunsinger, of Hickory, NC, Marcille (Robert) McCarty, of Mehoopany,

Age 80, of Newberry, FL, died
on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at the E.T. York Hospice Care Center in
Gainesville, FL. She was born in Breesport, NY on August 5, 1929. She was a
member of the Breesport Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School classes.
She enjoyed bird watching and flowers and loved to care for her family, to whom
she was a loving wife, and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Inez Rounds, Lila Millard, and
Virginia Coles; and a brother, Edwin Burlew. She is survived by her husband of
61 years, Richard "Dick" Moshier; daughters, Carol (Chuck) Penny of
Gainesville and Kathy (Clate) Mallory of Horseheads, NY; a brother, Larry
Burlew of Breesport, NY; four grandchildren, Randy (Cherish) Brigham, Tracey

Philip L. Butler died Feb 23, 2010. He was born on June 9, 1938; son of the late
Max and Charlotte Butler. He graduated from Wellsboro High School and Mansfield
College. Phil taught at Athens High School for 30 years and was also a building
contractor. His hobbies were Ham radio and woodworking. He is survived by wife,

CHAMBERLAIN - Rose M. (Chamberlain) Perry, age 79, of Tioga, PA, died on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at her home. Rose was born on October 17, 1930 in Susquehanna, PA, the daughter of James and Sara (Carr) Chamberlain. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert Austin Perry in 1967. Prior to her retirement, Rose was employed as a hostess and waitress. Rose is survived by two sons; Robert A. (Tanya) Perry of Berkeley Heights, NJ, Michael R. Perry of Oceanside, CA; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara A. and Antony Stager of Tioga, PA; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Pauline Chamberlain of Waverly, NY; three grandchildren; Ashley Perry of Sinking Springs, PA, Mary and Seth Stager of Tioga, PA; a special niece, Sylvia Tomlinson of Elmira, NY and several additional nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Herbert, she was also predeceased by nine brothers and sisters. A memorial service will be held at a later date. COOLBAUGH - Ethel Marie Coolbaugh 74, of Meshoppen died Thursday, Feb. 11 at her residence. She was born in Washington Twp. on Dec. 14, 1935 daughter of the late Luther A. and Ethel E. Knorr Coolbaugh. Ethel was a homebody. She loved listening to her favorite radio station, WPEL in Montrose, and reading her Bible and the Guidepost devotional. She will be sadly missed by her loving family and numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her brothers Luther A. Jr. and Olen Coolbaugh, and sister Elsie Buckingham. She is survived by her brothers; Gene, of Meshoppen, George I., of Coventry, Connecticut, and Russell J. Coolbaugh, of Wysox, and sisters; Sarah Hartman, of Meshoppen, Maybelle J. COLEMAN Edward J.
Age 64, a lifelong resident of Pine City, died
peacefully Saturday at home in the loving arms of his family after a courageous
battle with cancer. Born on March 5th, 1945 to Charles and Gertrude McCarrick
Coleman, Ed was a talented craftsman who created many beautiful pieces of
furniture that will be enjoyed by many as his legacy. He served six years in
the US Army Reserves, and he also retired after 30 years with Painter's Local
150. An avid outdoorsman, Ed enjoyed a lifelong passion for hunting and fishing.
His knowledge of antiques is legendary and he was a familiar sight at local
yard sales and auctions. Ed is survived by his wife Linda Dailey Coleman, with
whom he would have celebrated 40 years of marriage on June 17, 2010; sons Jason
Coleman with wife Melanie of Pine City and Edward Coleman Jr. with wife Sara of
Elmira; daughters Tracey Riker with husband Hank of Horseheads and Colleen
Dorer of Pine City; son-in-law Randall Dorer; sister Jean Brimmer with husband
George of Pine City; brothers Daniel Coleman with wife Mary Ann of Horseheads
and James Coleman with wife Beverly of Pine City; brothers-in-law William
Dailey with wife Rita of Connecticut and Gerald Dailey of Elmira; sister-in-law
Penny Noll with husband Charles of Big Flats; brother-in-law Rand Murnane of
Big Flats; sister-in-law June Dailey of Corning, NY. 8 grandchildren and one to
be born in March, and many nieces, nephews cousins and special friends. He was
predeceased by his parents, brothers Charles and William Coleman; mother-in-law
Dorothy Dailey and father-in-law Malcolm Dailey; sister-in-law Judy Murnane and

DEMLER - STRAUBINGER Ruth Demler
Age 92, of Horseheads, died Friday, January 22, 2010 at Arnot Ogden Medical
Center. Ruth was born May 29, 1917 in Buffalo, NY, daughter of George Demler
and Elizabeth Krohn Demler. She is predeceased by her husband Joseph P.
Straubinger, brother Norbert Demler, sister and brother-in-law, Marie and
George Bork. Ruth is survived by her daughter Linda R. Roessler, with husband
Barry, of Elmira; daughter Deborah Straubinger, with husband Mark Conway, of
NYC; grandchildren, Adam (Kristen) Roessler, Debra (Sharkee Niemi) Roessler,
Elizabeth Roessler, Alexandra Conway; great-grandchildren, Aidan, Riley, and
Miles Roessler; sister-in-law Mary Ann Demler; along with many nieces and

Thursday, June 3, 2010 at the Highlands Care Center in Laporte. Ann was born in
Towanda on July 16, 1918, the youngest and last surviving of 10 children born
to James and Clara Bird Driscoll. She graduated from St. Agnes High School a
member of the class of 1935. She married Richard L. Holcombe of Dushore on June
15, 1937. They would have celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary next week.
Ann was a homemaker and a loving spouse, mother, grandmother and great
grandmother. She was very active in her community with her church and civic
associations. She was the first Den Mother of the Cub Scouts, Den 1, and very
instrumental in organizing bloodmobiles for many years. Ann was a very active
member of St. Basil's Church, Dushore, where she was a lifelong member of the
Altar and Rosary Society and a very long and active member of the church choir.
She also taught CCD for more than 20 years, preparing the youth for the
Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. She also was a member of
Loyalsock American Legion Post 996 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the
Sullivan County Republican Women and the Laporte Women's Club. Surviving are
her husband, Richard L. Holcombe, Dushore; daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie A.
and Thomas Gorsky, Penn Yan, N.Y.; son and daughter-in-law: Richard J. and
Paula B. Holcombe, Laporte; seven grandchildren, John, Michael and Thomas
Gorsky; Eileen and Benjamin Radencic and Sara and Philip Holcombe; nine great
grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a
daughter, Mary Kathryn (Mamie) Radencic Confar, on July 28, 2006 and a
son-in-law, George A. Radencic Jr. on June 20, 1996. A Transfer Service will be
held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2010 from P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206
Water St., Dushore, and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon at St.
Basil Church, Dushore, with her pastor, Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, presiding.
Inurnment will be in the adjoining parish cemetery. Friends may call on from 9

Age 65, formerly of Elmira Heights, NY died
October 17, 2009 after many years of respiratory illness. Eddy was predeceased
by his parents, Karlyle M. Gray and Violet E. Gray of Elmira Heights, NY;
brother, Skeet Gray of North Carolina; sister, Paulette Gray of Texas and
daughter, Cara Jean Gray of New Hampshire. He is survived by his daughter, D.
Gray; sisters, Phyllis (Ken) Halstead of Milton, NY, Pamela (Steven) Crandall
of Pine City, NY, Patricia (Robert) Dunn of Horseheads, NY; nieces, nephews,
and many cousins. Eddy attended Thomas A. Edison High School. He left the area
after school and resided in a few different states and died
in North Carolina. Eddy became a long haul trucker and spent long hours on the
road. His CB name was Country Ed. He absolutely lived and breathed country
music and loved to sing and play the guitar. One of his favorite songs was
"You are My Sunshine" which he sang in harmony with his sisters
whenever we were together. Eddy was a large man, with a large heart, and a soft
voice. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. We love you Eddy.-

HAYS Bruce H.
Age 81 of 214 Bowers Drive Horseheads, NY died
on Wednesday March 24, 2010 at home surrounded by his loving family. Bruce was
born November 14, 1928 in the Town of Barrington the son of the late Aaron and
Hazel Martin Hays. He married his wife, Norma Jean Palmer Hays, on October 24,
1947 and she pre-deceased him on January 23, 2001. Bruce was a long standing
member of The Masonic Fraternity having been initiated on January 29, 1952 and
was a member and Past Master of Dundee Lodge # 123 F&AM and a member of The
Kalurah Temple Shrine in Endicott, NY. Mr. Hays was also a longtime member and
Past Fire Chief of The Dundee Fire Department. He had been a delivery driver
for Dairylea Ice Cream for several years and retired from Central Re-Cycling Co-Op.
Bruce loved his family and friends and treasured the time he spent with them
especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mr. Hays is survived by

HERRINGTON - Amanda Kristine Herrington, Captain USAF, was taken from us on Feb. 8, 2010. Amanda was born May 29, 1980 in Macon, Ga. She graduated from Apple Valley High School, Apple Valley, Calif., where she excelled in softball and basketball. She went on to Victor Valley Junior College where she co-captained their championship softball team. She also obtained her pilot's license at Apple Valley airport. She finished her undergraduate education at Cal Poly Pomona where she graduated with honors in applied mathematics. Amanda joined the California Air National Guard 163rd Air Refueling Wing, the "Grizzlies," at March Air Reserve Base, graduated from Officers Training School in 2003 and Air Force Undergraduate Pilot training in 2004. She went on to qualify in the KC-135 tanker. When her unit's mission changed to the Predator UAS, Amanda remained with the Grizzlies, completed training and served four years as a Predator pilot supporting operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Amanda was proud of her unit's role in supporting Army and Marine Corps ground forces and cared deeply about the Air Force Joint Tactical Attack Controllers (JTACs) on the ground with whom she worked during her many missions. Amanda is survived by her mom, Kristine M. Herrington; her dad, USAF Lt. Col., Ret. John H. Bath, NY - A noble lady with a diminutive frame, L. Flo Dewey of W. Washington
Street, Bath succumbed to the ravages of Multiple Myeloma Saturday morning,
February 13th at her home among her loving family. In her 82 years she writ
love large on the tablets of her family's hearts. She was born in East
Mosgrove, PA on December 10, 1927 to the late George and Gertrude Hoak. At age
nine, upon the death of her mother, she was placed with foster parents, John
and Hilda Gazdick (late) of Gaines, PA where she befriended her husband-to-be,
the Rev. Dr. Keith M. Dewey. After graduating with Keith in the same 1945
Gaines H.S. class, (she as valedictorian); she studied piano at Mansfield
University; and made Lamda Mu (a national music honor society). They were
married at the Gaines U.M. Church on June 28, 1947 and went to New Mexico where
her soldier-husband was stationed. Surviving Flo are: two blood sisters,
Lorenza Lecker of St Marys, PA and Faith Williams of New Castle, PA; seven

at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. He was born March 13 1942. He was
preceded in death by parents Melvin and Naomi House Baker and step-father
Clinton Baker. He was also preceded in death by, his daughter, Monica Rae on
Dec. 26, 1975. He is survived by his wife, Ellie and daughters Tammy (Thomas)

Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at home surrounded by family. He was born on Feb. 24,
1946 in Sayre, Pa., a son of the late Henry and Sara Reynolds Johnston. Rick
was a life member of the JE Wheelock Hose Company, an avid NASCAR fan, and
enjoyed stock car racing. He enjoyed hunting and attending auctions. Rick
enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His biggest highlights were his

LAYLIN - Erma L Clupper, 93, of 436 Clark St., Waverly, died
peacefully on Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at her home. She was born on Mar. 6, 1916,
in Dowagiac, Mich., the daughter of the late Loren and Cora Laylin. A Valley
resident for over 70 years, she was a beloved member of the Waverly United
Methodist Church for over 50 years. Widowed in her 50s, she worked at, and
retired from, Tioga Nursing Home in Waverly. In retirement she continued to
volunteer and serve at her church, Meals on Wheels, Waverly seniors and
visiting shut-ins. She kept active taking up bowling and golf. She loved to
travel visiting friends and her large extended family. As matriarch, role model
and friend she will be sorely missed. She was predeceased by her husband
Donald; son Eugene; brothers Erwin Laylin and Gerald Laylin; sister Zora
Laylin; and great-granddaughters Veronica Greiner and Javina Bumbala. She is
survived by her sons Jerry of Woodbridge, Conn., and Ronald of Waverly;
daughter Lenora Howard of Sunnyvale, Texas; as well as eight grandchildren,
nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A celebration and
remembrance of Erma’s life will be held at the United Methodist Church, 158
Chemung St. Waverly, NY, on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. The family will be receiving

LEE - John "Jack" Lee III, 70, Roaring Branch, died
while surrounded by family on May 19, 2008 at The Gate House, Williamsport.
Born on December 12, 1937 in Ralston, he was the son of Lillian (Jones)
Lee and the late John A. Lee Jr. He was a 1955 graduate of Canton High School
and served in the U.S. Air Force. On August 29, 1959, he married Claudette Berube
in Grand Fals, New Brunswick, Canada. He was the owner of Landon's Tire and
Garage, Canton for many years. Most recently he enjoyed being semi-retired and
remained involved in the business. Mr. Lee was a member of Ralston's St.
Aloysius Catholic Church; a founder and member of the Mill Hill Manor Hunting
Club, Roaring Branch; was also active with the Antique Auto Club, New
Brunswick. Other memberships included the Wheel Inn Club, Roaring Branch and
Canton Moose Lodge No. 429. Times spent with his family were most important. He
and Claudette loved taking many trips in their motor home. He enjoyed hunting,
especially with his grandsons. He also was a big fan of NASCAR's Jeff Gordon.
In addition to his mother, Lillian, Roaring Branch, surviving are his wife of
48 years, Claudette; children, John (Chris) Lee and Renee (Greg) Williams, all
of Roaring Branch; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings,
Shirley Smith, Williamsport and Paul Lee, Texas; several nieces, nephews, and
cousins. He was predeceased by his father and by his brother, Robert Lee.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. May 24 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church

on Thursday March 25, 2010 at home surrounded by her family after a courageous
two year battle with cancer. She was born on August 24, 1949 the daughter of
the late George and Belva (Cummings) Lockner. She is survived by her husband of

MacDONALD - David A. MacDonald, of Corning, New York, passed at age 76 on March 13, 2010 at Buffalo General Hospital, Buffalo, New York. Born 1933 in Delhi, New York to Ernest and Daisy (Beers) MacDonald, he is predeceased by his parents and siblings, Beatrice, Marion, and Robert. Remaining are one brother, Douglas MacDonald of Walton, New York and a sister Augusta Frisbee of Rocky Mount, Virginia. David graduated from Delaware Academy, Delhi, New York, entering the United States Air Force as a welder in 1952. He received Honorable Discharge in 1956 with a National Defense Service medal and a medal of Good Conduct. He married Mary Cobb of Oneonta, New York on March 24, 1958. Together they raised daughters Lorna, Pamela (deceased Dec.1958) and Susan. The MacDonalds moved to Alfred, New York where David attended Alfred University and graduated with an Associate in Applied Science. Later moving to Corning, New York, David accepted an Engineering position with Corning Glass Works where he remained a faithful employee for over 30 years working both in Corning and on long-term projects in Indiana and Pennsylvania. In 1970, the family moved to Buffalo, New York, so David could extend his education at Buffalo State College. After graduating with a Bachelor in Science in 1972, they returned to Corning. David and Mary traveled for Corning to Poland for two years and then to Korea and China. David had a curiosity passed on to his family and a real love for life and a good joke, always with a twinkle in his eye. He was a handyman, played shuffleboard and loved politics. A model citizen, David participated in his community. He and his wife were longtime members of the Moose, Elks, American Legion, and the VFW. His charitable nature, sense of humor, and concern for others made him a beloved friend to many. Surviving are his daughters Lorna Czarnota of Buffalo and Susan (John) Gross of Painted Post, his grandson Victor Gross, and granddaughter Charisse (Geoffrey) Spier, as well as four great grandchildren, Codey, Davin, Mallory and Braydon. His dear wife Mary who passed December 12, 2009 predeceases him. There will be a Scottish farewell service at Haughey Funeral Home, 216 East First Street, Corning NY on March 31, 2010 at 5pm. Pastor Robert Foote officiating and selections on the great highland pipes by piper Fred Peters. Family and friends are invited to share their memories. McMULLEN - Scott E. McMullen - Age 55, of Wellsboro, PA, died on Saturday, March 13, 2010. He was born on November 20, 1954 in Wellsboro, PA, a son of the late Thomas and June (Losinger) McMullen. He was the husband of Kathy L. (Starkweather) McMullen. Scott was an owner/operator truck driver. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; son, Scott A. quietly at Bradford County Manor. She was 83 years of age. Born March 4, 1926,

(Welliver) Mordan. Hilda grew up in the area around
Unityville, and later moved to the Montoursville-Williamsport area. She was
employed for many years as a sewing machine operator at the former Carey-McFall
Co. in Montoursville. In the early 1960s, she moved to Chemung County, N.Y.,
where she volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and 4-H leader. By the mid-1970s,
Hilda moved to Shunk, Pa., where her independent spirit was free to embrace the
beauty and bounty of God's creation. She became the consummate outdoors-woman,
quite skilled at hunting, gardening, canning her own meat and vegetables and
chopping her own firewood. Hilda remained in Shunk until a few years ago, when
health issues necessitated her moving in with her family. Hilda was a woman of
great faith and strove to walk in the Lord's ways. She embraced the teachings
of Jehovah's Witnesses and enjoyed the fellowship and spiritual uplifting of
the Kingdom Hall in Towanda. Hilda is survived by: her son, Norman A.
Guisewhite of Canton; daughters Ileen (and Dan) Burgess of Towanda and Barbara
(and James) Ling of Shunk; sisters Mary Swisher and Jean (and Chancy) Robbins,
both of Unityville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by: brothers Layrou Mordan,

NAYLOR - Terry F. Naylor - Age 63, of 148 Naylor Lane, Painted Post,
NY, died
Thursday, March 11, 2010, at home in Painted Post surrounded by his loving
family. Terry was born in Corning on October 2, 1946, the son of the late Merl
and Evelyn (Burley) Naylor. He married Mary L. Galligan on June 16, 1966, in
Sonora, NY. She survives him. Terry attended school in Campbell, NY, and served
with the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. He was employed as a machinist with
Ingersoll Rand Company for thirty-three years retiring in 2003. Terry enjoyed
country music, playing cards, and going to the casino. He also loved hunting
and being in the outdoors. He was a member of the Tioga American Legion, Tioga,
PA. He had formerly been a Justice of the Peace in Bradford, NY. He is survived
by his wife, Mary; and three daughters, Dawn Naylor of Brooktondale, NY,
Theresa (John) Sornberger of Painted Post, NY, and Heather (Dale) Stalbird of
Savona, NY; two sisters, Merlyn Cavallaro and Darlene Murphy; three brothers:
Merl Naylor, Nathan Naylor, and William Naylor; eleven grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received

with his Lord, February 15, 2010, after a courageous battle with surgical

unexpectedly Feb. 13, 2010 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Bonnie was born
in Corning, NY on April 17, 1938, daughter to the late Myron and Mary (Furney)
Prosser. She was predeceased by her husband, Ermen Paulo in 2006. She is
survived by daughter, Linda (Dillon) Kaulkhurst of Altamonte Springs, FL; sons,
Larry Wood of Elmira, NY, Ronald (Beth) Wood of Horseheads, NY, Roger (Rose)
Wood of Horseheads, NY, Timothy (Janet) Wood of Elmira, NY; and 21
grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Tina (Greg) Potter of Corning,
NY, Linda (Richard) Steve of Tennessee; brother, Myron Prosser of Corning, NY;

Bonnie was a self-employed Beautician working from her home for over 55 years.

RANSOM - Erma Eileen Ransom Brown, 93, of 332 Cessna St., Sayre, Pa.,
died
early Saturday morning Feb. 13, 2010 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
"Eileen" as she was known by her family and friends was a daughter of
the late Col. T. William Ransom and Grace Gillette Ransom. She was a graduate
of Towanda High School and the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing class
of 1939. Eileen joined the Army Medical Corps. during World War II, having
served as a first lieutenant in the European Theatre in England, France and
Germany. She ended her nursing career as an employee of Sylvania Electric in
Towanda, Pa. In 1955, Eileen married Thomas N. Brown. The couple resided in
Montour Falls, N.Y. for a number of years and spent their retirement in Good
Samaritan Village in Kissimmee, Fla. She is survived by: a son, Thomas Michael
Brown of Montour Falls, N.Y.; a step-daughter, Patricia Ann Brown of Kissimmee,
Fla.; step-mother, Freda Ransom Shipley of Bethlehem, Pa.; eight grandchildren;
several great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Kunes of Kissimmee, Fla.; three
sisters-in-law, Hilda D. Brown with whom she resided in Sayre, Frances Potter
of Johnson City, N.Y., Martha Covey of Gillett, Pa.; and several nieces and
nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by

ROSENCRANCE - Kenneth E. Rosencrance, 61, of Troy, born April 24,
1948, died
Feb. 17, 2010, at Robert Packer Hospital following a battle with cancer. Ken
was a beloved elementary school educator for more than 35 years with the Troy
Area School District, where his love of learning and his passion for teaching
enriched the lives of more than 700 children. Ken served in many leadership
roles, including president of Troy Area Education Association, liaison for Troy
Public (Allen F. Pierce) Library and the Bradford County Public Library, and
building coordinator at Springfield and East Troy elementary schools. He is
survived by: a brother, Daniel B. (Mary Ellen) Rosencrance of Cogan Station; a
sister, Phyllis J. Rosencrance of Laceyville; nieces Wendy, Caryn, Jennifer and
Rachel; and several cousins. Ken was predeceased by his parents, I. Boyd and

SAAR - Robert Saar, Jr., 47, of Ralston, died
while surrounded by family on April 24, 2008 at the Williamsport Hospital. They
say a man doesn’t measure his wealth by the monies he has, but by the quality
and number of friends he has. If that’s the case, Robert was a very
wealthy man. Born on August 21, 1960 in Blossburg, Robert Jr. was the son of
the late Robert Raymond and Myrtle (Miller) Saar. He married the former
Alice Austin on Oct. 5, 1979 in Williamsport. Bob was employed as an
inspector with American Lumber Co. in Williamsport for 23 years and was a
co-owner of Cascade Lumber Co in Bodines for 10 years. Earlier he worked
for Troy’s Cummings Lumber and Ron Baltzley Hardware in Mansfield. He was a
member of the Ralston United Methodist Church; served with the Ralston
Volunteer Fire Company for many years and was a lifetime member of the
NRA. Other memberships included Lycoming Creek’s Anglers & Sportsman
Clubs and Robbins Run & Bear Left Hunting Clubs. Bob lived his time here to
the fullest; blessed with a loving and supportive family and many dear
friends. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, shooting
bow, playing softball and bowling. Surviving are his beloved wife Alice;
daughter, Rose (Lewis) Frederick, Canton; sisters, Judy Lach, Pauline Lucas,
Connie Simcoe, all of Williamsport and Roxanne Castle, Troy; many nieces,
nephews and cousins. Calling hours are Saturday, May 3 from 3 to 5 at the
Ralston United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m.,
May 3, at the Ralston Church. Donations in his memory may be made to the

SAMUELS - Jeanne S. Gerard of Elmira, NY was born November 30,
1920 in Sayre, PA, died
peacefully on Sunday, March 14, 2010, at her home surrounded by her loving and
caring family. Her survivors include: daughter, Barbara Gerard of Elmira, NY;
son, James M. (Anne Stevenson) Gerard of Penn Yan, NY; daughter, Elizabeth
(Liz) Gerard of Corning, NY; along with 5 grandchildren. She was predeceased by
her son, John R. "Bobby" Gerard; daughter, Deborah Gerard White; and
parents, Adrian and Mable (Hurst) Samuels. Richard R. Gerard Jr. also survives
her. Jeanne volunteered with the Arnot Ogden Medical Center over a 20-year span
accumulating 11,000 hours. She retired from Newland and Associates as an
Executive Assistant after several years of dedicated service. Family and

Ave., Elmira/Southport, NY on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A

SMITH - Mrs. Dorcus E. Greenley, 77, of RR 2 New Albany, Pa., died
at her home in Albany Township on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 17, 2010. She was
born in Swoyersville, Pa., on Aug. 4, 1932, the daughter of the late George F.
and Margaret V. Jackson Smith Sr. Mrs. Greenley was the wife of the late Carl
E. Greenley, who died
on Aug. 9, 2005. Growing up in Scottsville, an area of Mehoopany, Pa., she was
a graduate of the last graduating class of the Mehoopany High School, class of
1951. For many years she was employed at various clothing factories in Black
Walnut, Pa., and at the shoe factories of Tunkhannock and Mildred. She was also
employed at the Rynvelds Wreath Factory in New Albany, and for a year at
Procter and Gamble Paper in Mehoopany for the Philadelphia Cleaning Co.
Surviving are: her son, Warren E. Greenley of Wilkes Barre, Pa.; her two
daughters, Kimberly Hochberg of New Albany, Pa., and Carla M. Greenley of
Wilkes Barre, Pa.; her three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; her
sister Violet June Perugini of Delaware, Pa.; and two brothers, David E. Smith
of Trenton, N.J., and Myrl A. Smith of Strawridge, Tenn.; as well as many
nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death
by two sisters, Thelma Grogesky and Alice Goodwin, and her three brothers,
George Smith Jr., John Smith and Ralph Smith. Memorial services will be held at
a later date at the convenience of her family. Interment will be in the
Sunnyside Cemetery in Tunkhannock, Pa. Arrangements were made through the

SNOWBURG Alan L.
Age 54, of Horseheads, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at his home, with his
loving family by his side. Alan was born June 9, 1955 in Elmira, NY, the son of
the late Holly Sr. and Ann Vanderpool Snowburg. He is survived by his wife of
35 years, Pamela (Heatwole) Snowburg; children, Chad (Sarah) Snowburg of Big
Flats; Michael (Cherie) Snowburg, of Holly Springs, NC; Alana Snowburg and
Jarrid Storch of Elmira; Nicole (Christian) Schiller of Elmira Heights;
grandchildren, Anthony, Joseph, Lilian, Bella and Jace; brother, Holly Jr.
Snowburg of Williamsburg, VA; sister, Christine Snowburg of Geneva, NY; in
addition to his parents, Alan is predeceased by his brother, Paul Snowburg.

THORNTON Hubert Fred
Hubert Fred Thornton died February 13, 2009, at age 95 in Bryan, TX, after a
long, full life. He was born on March 11, 1914, in Spencer, NY to Emily Austen
and Harry Eugene Thornton. He grew up in Van Etten, NY as the fourth of five
children. Growing up in a small town, he knew everyone and was surrounded by a
large extended family. He graduated from Van Etten High School where he played basketball.
In 1932, he married Gertrude Aho and the couple had three children. He worked
in the commercial construction business his whole life, serving as project
manager on projects throughout upstate New York. He was active in the Masons,
served as a volunteer fireman and loved hunting, fishing and boating on Lake
Cayuga in his cabin cruiser. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling the US and
around the world. A favorite trip was a cruise through the Panama Canal. After
moving to Bryan in 2006, he enjoyed spending time with his family and new
friends from Waldenbrook Estates. He is preceded in death by his parents; his
siblings (Rocelia Doanes, and Kenneth, Ronald and Claude Thornton); wife,
Gertrude; children, Hubert Richard "Dick", Lyle Eugene and Carol Ann;
and second wife, Doris (Hall). Survivors include daughters-in-law, Shirley
(Steffens) Thornton of Bryan, TX and Barbara (Snyder) Thornton of Pinellas
Park, FL; grandchildren, Lyle Edward Thornton of Pinellas Park, FL, Cheryl
(Thornton) Frost and husband Jon of Coppell, TX, and Scott Thornton of Bryan,
TX. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Alec, Austin and Alyssa
Frost, and Ben and Jack Thornton. A graveside service will be held in Van

WAYNE - Mildred A. "Peggy" Smith, age 87, of Montour Falls,
formerly of Wayne, NY died Wednesday July 3, 2002 at the Seneca View Skilled
Nursing Facility in Montour Falls, NY.Friends are invited to call today from

on Nov. 28, 1986. A loving mother and grandmother she has lived locally since
1967, previously of Galeton, PA. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Wayne American
Legion Ladies Aux. and a former member of the Ladies of the Moose in Galeton,
PA.She is survived by 2 sons Chester (Dawn) Cratsley of Bergen, NY, Frederick
(Sonja) Cratsley of Wayne, NY; 5 daughters Lucy Force of Elmira, Mary Lou
(Basil) McCutchen of Harrison Valley, PA, Shirley (Durell) Houghtaling and Jane
(Bill) Putnam both of Savinsville, PA, Sharon (Jeff) Dencenburg of
Hammondsport; a sister Margaret (Harry) Hoffman of Westfield, PA; 35
grandchildren; 78 great granchildren; 12 great great grandchildren; several nieces
and nephews.
WETHERUP - BEAUDIN, Wilda W.
Age 84, a lifelong resident of Welland, Ontario died
Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Elmira, New York, with her
son George and granddaughter Deborah Templar by her side. She was born March 18,
1926, the daughter to the late William and Florence (Miller) Wetherup. She is
survived by her husband of 15 years, William Beaudin and family of Smithville,
her sister Evelyn Britt of Port Colborne, her son George A. Wetherup of Delray
Beach, Florida, granddaughter (caregiver) and her husband Deborah (Clayton)
Templar of Elmira, New York, granddaughter and her husband Tammy (Sean) Wu of
Coral Springs, Florida, great-grandchildren Timothy (Nikki) Kelly II of Pine
Valley, New York and Brittany Templar of Elmira, New York,
great-great-granddaughter Aurora Kelly of Pine Valley, New York and many nieces
and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her late
husband Donald Elsie, her son Gary Baker, eight sisters, one brother and one
great-grandson Brennan Templar. She was a lifelong member of the Welland
Brethren-In-Christ Church and also attended the First Church of the Nazarene,
Corning, NY and Calvary Nazarene Church, Elmira, NY. Earlier in life Wilda
operated an automotive body shop with her late husband Donald Elsie in Welland
and Fort Erie and later operated her own convenience store Wilda's Variety
store on Broadway Avenue in Welland, as well as numerous other endeavors.
Friends are invited to visit the family at the H.L. CUDNEY FUNERAL HOME, 241
West Main Street, Welland on Sunday, March 28th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral
service will be conducted on Monday, March 29th at Welland Brethren-In-Christ
Church, 50 Lincoln Street, Welland at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Zion

WOOD - SAVEY Kathleen A.
Age 49 of Horseheads, NY died
on Wednesday February 17, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. Kathleen
was born January 18, 1961 in Elmira, NY the daughter of the late Richard and
Nancy B. Doner Savey Wood. She had worked at Toshiba Corp. in Horseheads, NY
and Emerson Corp. (Morse Chain) in Ithaca, NY. Kathleen loved her family and
friends and treasured the time she spent with them. Kathleen is survived by her
son James D. Savey and her daughter Meghan Savey both at home; father: Jim Wood
of Columbia Crossroads, PA; sisters and brother-in-law: Debbie & Conrad
Martin of Huntsville, Alabama and Sue Savey of Elmira, NY; nephew Nicholas

WOODRUFF Mrs. Ruby E. Shaffer, formerly of Lovelton, died
peacefully on Feb. 12, 2010 at Olde Knox Commons Nursing Home in Huntersville,
N.C. with family at her side. Born in Sayre, Pa., on March 5, 1922, she was a
daughter of the late Howard and Florence (OLIVER) Woodruff. For over 30
years, Mrs. Shaffer and her husband ran Shaffer's General Store in
Lovelton. In 2007 she was inducted into the Wyoming County Voter Hall of
Fame, and in 1999 received a citation from Pa. Sen. Charles Lemmond honoring
her 51 years of service to the North Branch Township Election Board, most of
those years as Judge of Election. Ruby's kind and loving spirit earned her a
host of friends whom she treasured and enjoyed visiting with. She was well
known for her talented canning, cooking and baking abilities, and if anyone
ever needed a helping hand, she could be counted on to be there for them. She
was well loved by her adoring family and friends, and will be greatly missed
and lovingly remembered by many. She was a member of Lovelton Bible Church and
Mehoopany VFW Auxiliary. Surviving are three children and their spouses:
a son, Gary Shaffer and his wife Terry of Greenfield, Wisc.; a daughter, Connie
Knolles and her husband Tom of Huntersville N.C.; a son, Richard Shaffer and
his wife Sue of Media, Pa. Survivors also include a sister, Marie Hicks of
Sayre Pa.; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her
husband of 49 years, Stanley F. Shaffer in 1992, and two brothers, Edward
Woodruff and Richard Woodruff. A memorial service to celebrate Ruby's
life will be held at a date to be announced. Interment will be in Colley

Falls, NY. Mrs. Hall is survived by her daughter, Anna Mae (Bill) Langley of

Larry (Connie) Goodrich of Littleton, CO; daughter in law: Sharon Thompson of
Montour Falls, NY; Stepson, Larry (Judy) Hall of Benton, KY; 15 grandchildren,
21 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews & cousins. Her first
husband Earl Goodrich, second husband Amos Hall and her son Floyd Goodrich predeceased
Mrs. Hall. Mrs. Hall was a life member of the Excelsior Southern Light Chapter

? HOFF - Marion E. Hoff - Elmira NY, a longtime resident of Elmira, and retired teacher of Nursing in the Corning Painted Post School District, died Friday, March 12, 2010. Born in Chicago Illinois, Marion graduated from Northwestern University, was an Alumni of Evanston Illinois Hospital School of Nursing, and a member of AAUW. She served as Associate Director of Nursing at Arnot Ogden Memorial Hospital in Elmira. Marion is survived by her husband, Paul Hoff; son, Glenn, and his wife, Kathie, both of Rochester NY, and their two sons, Scott and Jon; daughter, Barbara and husband, John Snyder, who live in North Carolina. She has four grandchildren, Danielle, Kristine, Jessica, and Nicole Snyder. Active in the community, she enjoyed the arts and classical music serving as a volunteer Docent at the Rockwell Museum in Corning NY; was member of the Eastern Star and served in many leadership roles at First Presbyterian Church in Elmira.
