WELLMAN - RICHARDSON, Janet Wellman
Age 89, died February 24, 2010 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center. She was
born in Grand Rapids, MI on August 3, 1920 to Louise Meyersahm and Jay
Wellman. She grew up in southern Indiana, Cumberland, Maryland and Grand
Rapids. At age five she attended the Scopes Trial in Dayton, TN, which
was near a veneer mill owned by her father. She had a vivid memory of the
caged monkey on display at the courthouse during the trial and was later
a firm believer in the theory of evolution. She graduated from Simmons
College in 1941 and worked as the executive secretary to the comptroller
of General Radio Corporation in Cambridge, MA. It was in Cambridge that
she met George Wendell Richardson, who was studying meteorology at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as a part of his Army Air Corp Weather
Officer Training. They were married on Memorial Day, May 30, 1943 at Bowman
Field in Louisville, KY. They moved to Corning in 1949 where George worked
for Steuben Glass and Corning Glass Works. He predeceased her in 1967.
Janet was a woman of remarkable grace, intelligence and vision - a natural
leader who generously shared her gifts with a wide array of community organizations.
She was a role model and mentor to many. Her volunteer work in Corning
started with service on the Area Advisory Committee, which studied options
for improving area schools. She then served on the Corning Painted Post
School District Board of Education for 17 years, 14 years as president.
It was during her leadership that Corning Community College was started
under School District sponsorship, the district's Head Start program was
instituted and East and West High Schools were built. She was a director
and president of the New York State School Boards Association and chairman
of the New York State Educational Conference Board. She later served on
the CPP School District Archives committee and authored "A Valley's Decision
Remembered," the story of the consolidation of 61 small rural school districts
into the CPP School District. She served as president of Steuben-Allegany
Board of Cooperative Services, as chairman of the Steuben County School
Boards Association and as a trustee of Corning Community College. She was
a Lifetime Member of the American Association of University Women, including
terms as Corning branch president and New York State secretary. She was
an honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a national sorority of outstanding
women educators. Her other community volunteer work included board service
at Planned Parenthood of the Southern Tier (secretary), the Salvation Army,
Seven Lakes Girl Scout Council, the Southern Tier Association for the Blind
(president), the Memorial Society of the Greater Corning Area, Serenity
Farms and the Steuben County Office for the Aging. In 1975 she was vice
president and campaign co-chair for the United Way. She was an honorary
lifetime member of the Glen Region Sports Car Club of America. She served
as chief registrar for professional racing for the Watkins Glen Grand Prix
Corporation and Watkins Glen International for 32 years and had a particular
fondness for the many Formula I drivers and team managers she came to know.
She was also an honorary lifetime member of the Polish Racing Drivers Association.
A road at Watkins Glen International is named after her. Janet was a member
of the United Methodist Church of Painted Post and served on many committees,
including as chairman of the Administrative Council. She was active in
the church's Women's Connection and the Willing Workers, as well as the
