BRAMHALL – Gladys Bramhall Wilner, pioneering aviatrix, archaeologist, dies at 98.  Gladys Bramhall Wilner, who flew air races against Amelia Earhart and later dug for evidence of early human habitation in America, died Friday June 3, 2009.  She was 98.  Mrs. Wilner, who was known as Peggy, was born in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania.  She trained as a nurse and worked in Brooklyn and Manhattan.  In the early 1930’s she learned to fly after only two hours’ instruction.  She held the first Parachute Rigger License ever earned by a woman, number 192, in 1931.  In the early 1930’s she competed in air races and flew air shows, including the all-woman Annette Gipson Air Race in 1934 at Roosevelt Field, New York (Amelia Earhart won).  In 1932 she was recruited to fly nonstop to Rome from Floyd Bennett Field in New York.  The Bellanca airplane to be flown was named the American Nurse, in honor of Mrs. Wilner, who was the only woman available who was a nurse, a pilot, and parachute jumper.  Scheduled to parachute over Florence, Mrs. Wilner eventually declined to participate (the American Nurse was lost at sea during the attempt).  In later years Mrs. Wilner earned degrees in archaeology from the University of Texas and did field work on early human habitation in the Americas, finding possible evidence that humans inhabited North America earlier than the widely accepted date of 11,000 B.C.  Formerly married to the late Albert Wilner, Mrs. Wilner is survived by her daughter Nadine Beezley of Tucson, Arizona, her son, attorney Norwood S. Wilner, of Jacksonville, Florida, and six grandchildren.  The Times-Union, Jacksonville, FL, 8 July 2009.

CHRISTIE Theodore Lamont
Better know to his family as "Teddy" and to his friends as "Chris", departed this life on June 16, 2009. He died at the age of 62 from complications of a stroke that occurred in May 2009. Teddy Christie, son of the late Theodore Christie Sr. and Josie Benson Thomas, was born in Elmira, New York on April 11, 1947. He attended public schools in Elmira and Ithaca, New York. He entered the service in 1969 after the death of his stepfather and assumed the father role in his family for several years. Later, as a civilian, Teddy's affiliation with the military expanded when he joined the Department of Defense through its contractor Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). After many promotions and commendations, he finally retired from DISA with 30 plus years of service in February 2009. Throughout Teddy's life he was well known for his charisma, his meticulous, debonair look and distinctive voice. He was just as much at ease in a suit and tie, sitting behind a desk conferring with the Colin Powell aggregate, as he was with being in his apron, cooking on the outdoor barbeque pit he built from the ground up. That accomplishment reflected two of his favorite hobbies: home improvements and cooking - he loved eating and talking about good food. As a young man he was quite the entertainer. He could sing and dance his way into your heart. He had perfected this skill so well, that while in the army he was assigned to sing for the generals. Upon completion of his tour of duty in Korea, Teddy settled in Maryland with his new wife Edith. This union resulted in the birth of his only child, Theda. He later married Grace Watson Brown who deceased in 2003. Teddy was truly unique; his personality could only be described as "bigger than life" - he could tell a story or joke like no one else and could often be found "holding court" at family gatherings. His ability to give you a crazed "Jack Nicholson" over-the-glasses look when you did something silly was usually lightened by a chuckle, a smile and words of his wisdom; words that usually made you laugh. Teddy was a man that once encountered, you couldn't forget - once experienced, always loved. He leaves to cherish his memory, daughter, Theda; brothers, Gregory, Henry and Willie; sisters, Deborah, Carmen, Vickie, and Henrietta; his "other mother," Ethel Goolsby Futrell. He also leaves the woman who was closest to his real mother and willing to whip him, even as an adult, the infamous, "Aunt Jean" of Elmira, New York; and a host of other relatives and friends.  Published in the Star-Gazette on 6/28/2009

SWEENEY -  Thomas H. Sweeney, 77, of Laceyville, Pa., died suddenly on Friday evening, June 26, 2009, at his lakeside retreat near Big Pond, Pa. His beloved wife of 49 years, Marjorie, was at his side.  Tom was born Jan. 26, 1932, in Philadelphia, son of the late Aurthur C. and Marie A. (HAND) Sweeney. He was raised in West Philadelphia, and attended West Philadelphia High School.  After high school he served in the United States Army, and spent a year in Bordeaux, France. He was an expert rifleman and machine gunner.  After returning to the states, Tom married the former Marjorie CLERVAL. They resided in West Philadelphia before moving to Delaware County in 1967, where they raised three children together.  Tom was self-employed as a master plumber, a trade at which he excelled, but his kind heart and generous nature proved to be obstacles that limited his business success. He often befriended his plumbing clients, and would usually charge them what he thought they could afford, rather than the true cost of his services. Some of these relationships led to lifelong friendships, and he spent many years running errands and delivering meals to people who needed his help.  Tom was a man of many interests, and he had an intellectual curiosity and perfectionist nature that caused him to master almost every endeavor that he pursued. He was an accomplished photographer, guitarist, gunsmith, marksman and model-builder. He was also an avid reader, and he preferred books that would expand his knowledge. He would read books of history and reference material with the focus and discipline of one doing research. For pleasure, he once read the dictionary cover-to-cover, and also taught himself to speak French fluently.  More recently, Tom enjoyed the Internet, which expanded his ability to do research, and allowed him to find and contact old Army buddies he had not seen in more than 50 years. Tom also enjoyed cooking for family gatherings, and was particularly proud of his famous mashed potatoes, a closely guarded recipe that died along with him.  Tom also dabbled in philosophy. Found in his personal belongings after his passing was a yellowed index card labeled "Sweeney's Axiom: If anyone can appear at an inopportune moment, they will."   Tom's place of birth, the old Osteopathic Hospital on Spruce Street in Philadelphia, was later purchased by a religious group and was converted to a shrine. Mr. Sweeney was delighted by this turn of events, and he missed no opportunity to point it out to others.  He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, and a member of the Tri-County Sports Club.  Tom will be sadly missed by his wife, Marjorie; daughter, Vivian McLaughlin, and her husband, Thomas, of Swedesboro, N.J.; son, Walter Sweeney of Laceyville; daughter, Marie Wufsus, and her husband, Matthew, of Drexel Hill, Pa.; grandsons Thomas McLaughlin of Gibbstown, N.J., Timothy McLaughlin and his wife, Nicolette, of Swedesboro, and Matthew John Wufsus and his fiancee, Crissy, of Drexel Hill; and great-grandchildren Kaylin and Timothy McLaughlin.  A private memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 4, at the family retreat near Big Pond, a location that he loved.  Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Laceyville.  2 July 2009, Wyalusing Rcoket Courier.

TYLER - On July 3, 2009, Ray Tyler of Lacey Street, Laceyville, Pa., closed his eyes on this evil world and entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Ray had been a resident of Golden Living in Tunkhannock, Pa., for about a month.  Raymond B. Tyler was born June 7, 1920, in West Auburn, Pa., the son of Ray O. and Pearl BENNINGER Tyler. At an early age he moved to a small farm in South Auburn, where he grew up. He graduated from Laceyville High School in 1937.  In 1939 he married Annis Grow and moved to Laceyville. Annis predeceased him in 1995. He married Mary KIMBLE in 1999 and had recently celebrated 10 years of marriage with her.  Ray's first job after high school was transporting for a rendering company. He often joked that he got 50 cents per animal with his best day earning $2.50. He soon was hired by Whipple Brothers in Laceyville, working in the old sash mill. As a young boy his father had given him a woodworking plane, which he loved to use. Once at Whipples, he soon became proficient with the tools and his love for wood blossomed. He often would do small projects of his own during their off hours.  Facing a layoff at Whipples, he walked next door to G.L.F. (later Agway), where he was hired and worked most of his adult life. He did a variety of jobs, but the one he liked best was driving the lime spreader.  Ray and Annis owned and operated the Laceyville Hardware from 1966 to 1972. Ray was well-known as a hard worker. Following retirement he still worked whenever needed at Agway.  Ray and Annis were very active in Laceyville and in politics. In the community, they did whatever was needed (from street sweeping to cutting brush, etc.) to make Laceyville a better place to live. In politics, they often went door-to-door registering voters or campaigning.  Ray was an active member of the Braintrim Baptist Church, serving as head usher and Sunday School secretary for many years. He was saved at the age of 9, under the instruction of Reuben Judson, at Sunday School. Ray was not only a member of the church; he lived his life using the Bible as his guide.  Ray served on town council for more than 28 years, as president for a term when in his 80s. Prior to that he was water superintendent and continued helping with the water company so long as he was able.  One of Ray's favorite hobbies was woodworking. After a full day's work he loved to go to his workshop. He made many, many items to be sold at the Oldest House, as well as gifts for family and friends. He made hundreds of rocking horses for children, starting with a pattern but adding his own ideas to make a truly unique toy. When asked to make something without a pattern he had only to be given the suggestion.  Ray will be remembered for his sense of humor, his easy-going manner, his willingness to help, and his humble, godly spirit.  His survivors are: his beloved wife, Mary; his sons, Derwood "Woody" and wife Tina of Greenfield, Mass., and Ray O. and wife Pam of Turbotville; his daughter, Dolores "Dodi" and husband Steve of Bridgeton, N.J.; his grandchildren, Melanie and husband Terry Miller of Barton, N.Y., Tara and husband Jake Berry of Franklin, Mass., Dottie and husband Ben Cruzan of Bridgeton, Debbie and husband Ward Bond of Bridgeton, Jennifer and husband Chris Devore of Mansfield, Pa., and Jeremy Tyler of Atlanta, Ga.; stepsons Timothy and wife Sharon of Spring Hill, Daniel and wife Querly of Apalachin, N.Y.; stepdaughter Kristie Cobb of Irvine, Calif.; five step-grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sisters Rhea, and husband John Bouton of Albuquerque, N.M., and Frances Vogt of Elizabethton, Tenn.  Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 6. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7. Both are at the Braintrim Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Lacey Street cemetery. Pastor Tom Davis, Pastor Dave Faulkner and Pastor Mike Shanks will officiate.  The family will provide flowers. Death of a Pioneer
NOAH WILSON, A WELL KNOWN IDA COUNTY PIONEER
Many an old time resident of Battle Creek was painfully grieved Tuesday morning when it was reported that Noah Wilson had died that morning.  His death was sudden for he was laid up in bed only a few days, and it was only about a month ago  that he returned from a  trip to Kansas where he was visiting one of his sons and returned home feeling first--class for an old man, as he put it to a Times reporter.  The deceased was a well respected citizen of our town as anyone knew in town, he loved to chat to anyone who passed by.  The deceased was born June 5, 1826 at Troy, Pennsylvania and departed this life May 3,1904, making him 77 years, 10 months and 28 days old.  He moved with his parents to Linn County when a young boy and was married in the year 1847 to Miss Mary House to which union was born six children; Silas and George of Coyville, Kansas; Iram of Onawa, IA; Charles, Mrs. Lillie  Stewart and Mrs. Captolia Ruggles of Battle Creek, Iowa. Mr. Wilson moved with his family to Missouri and from there to Wilson County, Kansas, living there until 1860 (?) when he moved to Battle Creek, Iowa.  For about a year before his death his health began to fail and heart trouble with the aid of pneumonia caused his death. Funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday at 10 o'clock with the remains being laid to rest in Mount Hope Cemetery.  This is the Obituary for Noah Wilson, son of Iram, Son of Noah
