AUGUSTITUS Richard
Beloved husband, father, and grandfather
died
on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at Robert Packer Hospital with his loving family
at his side. Born on April 10, 1932 in Hazleton, PA, Richard was a rambunctious
young man who joined the US Navy at the age of 18 during the Korean Conflict.
He spent four memorable years aboard the aircraft carrier USS Tarawa during its
world tour; he traveled to over 27 countries being Shellbacked when he crossed
the equator. Upon his discharge, Richard attended Hartwick College where he
majored in psychology and education; he was the president of his class and the
German Club. An avid bowler who traveled extensively for his sport, he met his
beautiful wife, Shirley Dunn, in Elmira, NY. They were married one year later
at St. Patrick's Church and recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.
He earned his master's degree in education at SUNY Oneonta, several years later
he earned an additional master's degree in counseling at Cornell University.
Richard started his teaching career in Hancock, NY. Moving to Painted Post to
be closer to his mentor, Edward J. Smith, he taught sixth grade at Calvin U.
Smith School. Richard is remembered most for his work as the home-school counselor
in the Corning-Painted Post School District; he touched the lives of children
and families throughout the area for nearly thirty years. A member of the
Corning Elks Club, he, along with his wife, initiated their Christmas clothing
program for families in need, which he continued for 22 years. Richard loved
sports, he was three-time Hall of Famer in bowling and throughout the years, he
bowled three perfect games. After his retirement, Richard enjoyed living at his
home on Hammond Lake with his wife, Shirley, and traveling to see both his
daughter, Anne Ruggiero, her husband, Peter and their children, Nicole and
Gabrielle, and his son, Edward (Chip) and his children, Alexis and Abigail.
Along with his wife, children and grandchildren, he is survived by his brother,
Edward Augustitus (Armida) of Naples, FL; and his sisters, Betty Pintar of
Hazleton, PA, Alice Divigli (Robert) of Voorhees, NJ, and Anna Mae Lyons
(Thomas) of Kitnersville, PA; as well as several nieces and nephews. Richard is
predeceased by his sister, Nancy Burke. Richard will be missed forever, but his
loving kindness will live on in the hearts of his family and many families in
the area. Family and friends are invited to call at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc.,
1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY on Saturday, October 4, from 5 to 7 p.m.
with funeral committal service there at 7 p.m. Deacon George Welch will
celebrate Richard's service. Interment will be at the convenience of the
family. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorials to the Corning

BALOGH John
Loving husband, father, and grandfather, John Balogh, 88, of Gillett, PA, died
on Friday, September 12, 2008, at the Bradford County Manor in West Burlington,
PA. John's family includes his wife, Elvira Balogh; and his daughter, Agnes
O'Rourke, both of Pine City, NY; his son, Arpad (Rose) Balogh of Gillett, PA;
his granddaughter, Renee (Andrew) Husted of Wellsburg, NY; his sister, Anna
Istvan; and his niece, Maria Istvan, both of Budapest, Hungary. Services are
private and at the convenience of John's family. The Roberts Funeral Home,
Inc., 279 Main Street, Wellsburg, NY, has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Wellsboro Agitator - August 13, 1924
Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Cady, of this place; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Cady and Mrs. T. S.
Gleason, of Osceola, attended the funeral of Mrs. Mark Cady, of Wellsburg,
N.Y., which was held at the M. E. church at Canton Center, N.Y., Friday.
Interment was made at the same place. Mrs. Cady was a resident of this
place for several years, where she was well and favorably known.
BESLEY - BRACE, Delores H.
Age 82, of Elmira Heights, NY, died Sunday, October 12, 2008, at the Arnot Ogden
Medical Center in Elmira. Delores was born in Elmira on August 14, 1926 to the
late Kenneth and Irene (Myers) Besley. Survivors include her husband of 61
years, Norton; daughter, Susan Brace of Watkins Glen, NY; sons, David (Joyce)
Brace of Watkins Glen, NY, Robert (Marlene) Brace of Horseheads, NY and Thomas
(Cyndi) Brace of Elmira; grandchildren, Eric, Craig, Matthew and Adam Brace;
brother, Charles (Debbie) Besley of Elmira. Delores was a beloved wife, mother
and grandmother. Her knowledge, sense of humor, laughter, and her good-night
kisses will be sadly missed. Delores' request was that her services be

BUTTERWORTH - NELSON, Alison M.
Age 67, of Dundee, NY died Friday, September 12, 2008, at Hospeace House, in
Naples, NY. Her family will receive friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. Monday
(Sept. 15) in her home at 7 MacLaren Dr. Dundee, where they will celebrate and
reminisce about her life. The family respectfully requests no flowers, but
graciously asks that memorial contributions be made to the Women´s Study Club,
c/o Dundee Library, 32 Water St., Dundee, 14837; or Hospeace House P.O. Box
343, Naples, 14512. Alison was born September 26, 1940 in Kingston, Ontario,
Canada the daughter of Wyndham and Alison Margaret Dawson Butterworth. She
graduated from Elmira College with a BA in Social Work. On Nov. 25, 1961 in
Clinton, NY, she married the late Jay S. Nelson; he died on January 28, 1999.
She has lived locally since 1972, previously of Charlotte, NC. A self employed,
woodcraft woodworker, she retired in 2004 after working for several years for
Giles Family Store in Dundee. Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Women´s Study
Club of the Dundee Library, Home Bureau, and the Red Hat Society. She was one
of the founders of The Windmill Farm and Craft Market, in Penn Yan, and served
on the Dundee School Board. She enjoyed gardening, woodcrafts, and reading. She
is survived by two sons, Craig S. (Lori Jane) Nelson of Dundee, Kent B.
(Janelle Witmer) Nelson of Harrisburg, PA; a daughter, Alison M. (John) Emmons
of West Grove,, PA; her mother, Alison Hall of Dundee; a brother, George Derone
Hall of Paris, France; two sisters, Marilyn (Jim) Reid of Ontario, Canada, and
Beverly (Gordon) Watson of Burlington, VT; four grandchildren, and several
nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her father,
Wyndam Butterworth who was killed in France during World War II; and her
stepfather, Dr. Robert C. Hall in 1983. Arrangements are entrusted to the Baird

Wellsboro Agitator, Tioga, PA-- Wednesday, June 8, 1927
Marcus M. Cady, aged 73 years, died last Tuesday, at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. Walter Bancroft, at Mosherville, PA. He is survived by 3 sons: Ira J., of
Pine City; Samuel H., of Horseheads; Francis M., of Mosherville; one daughter,
Mrs Bancroft and several grandchildren and also one great-grandchild; 2
brothers, Edwin Cady of Osceola, PA and John Cady of Pine City.
CARNEGIE Paul J.
Age 53, of Elmira, died very unexpectedly, on Wednesday, September 24, 2008.
Paul was born August 15, 1955, a son of Mary Rossi Carnegie and the late Edward
J. Carnegie. In addition to his mother Paul is survived by his daughter,
Victoria Carnegie; granddaughter, Alena Carnegie both of Washington PA; sisters
and brothers-in-law, Marianne Carnegie of Charleston, SC, with her sons,
Jonathan and Michael; Christine and Robert Formeck of Charlotte, NC, with
children, Rob, Dan, and Nicole; Patty and Fred Dales of Columbia, SC with son
Christopher; brother and sister-in-law, E. James and Joy Carnegie of Elmira,
with children, Josh, Trisha, and Sean; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Paul was an avid drummer, playing in several local country bands. Friends are
invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of Water and Walnut Sts., on Sunday,
September 28, 2008 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held

CHILSON Wynn Kemp
Age 74, of 8 Highland Ave., Addison, died Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Arnot
Ogden Medical Center, Elmira. Mr. Chilson was born in Nelson, PA on February 8,
1934, the son of the late Max and the late Leona (Kemp) Chilson. He attended
school in Nelson, PA, and in 1987 married Mary Viselli of Addison, who survives
him. Mr. Chilson owned and operated Chilson Roofing and Siding of Nelson, PA
for over 23 years. He then operated Chilson Logging and Lumber of Nelson for
many years and later partnered with his son, Kevin, in Two Rivers Timber of
Lindley, NY. In 2006, Wynn retired from Commonwealth Plywood Co., Ste-Therese,
Quebec where he had worked as a buyer. He was a member of Osceola Lodge #421,
F. and A.M.; a Life Member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite N.M.J.U.S.A,
Valley of Coudersport; Irem Shriners A.A.O.N.M.S. of Wilkes-Barre, PA; and a
Charter Member of Addison Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 3904. Wynn had
also been a member of the Family Fraternity Moose Lodge 746 of Elkland, PA
since 1969, and he served on the Vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer
in Addison, NY. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary V. Chilson; son,
Jeffrey Chilson and his wife, Sandi of Middlebury Center, PA; son, Brian Scott
Chilson and his wife, Deborah of Nelson, PA; son, Kevin Chilson and his wife,
Karen of Lindley, NY; daughter, Peggy Kay Martin and her husband, James of
Merriam, KS; stepson, Arthur Greenfield of Washington, D.C.; stepdaughter,
Yvonne Coulombe and her husband, David of Woodhull, NY; sister, Paula Barr and
George Myers of Deltona, FL; sister, Jeanette Mendias of Rocklin, CA; sister,
Kay Miller and her husband, Pete of Nelson, PA; sister-in-law, Martha Stiles
and her husband, Ken of Centreville, VA; sister-in-law, Yvonne Roberts of
Elmira, NY; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews,
and cousins. Services will be held Saturday, October 4 at 11:00 a.m. at the

COLLINS Peter M.
Age 64, of Elmira, died at his home, with his family, and friends, by his side,
on Thursday, September 25, 2008. Peter was born January 19, 1944, a son of the
late Jerome F. and Caroline VanAuken Collins. Peter is survived by his wife of
41 years Susan Baker Collins; son, Cameron M. Collins of St. Louis, MO;
daughter, Alexandra C. Burless of Elmira, with daughter, Jaime; brothers,
David, Mike, and Jerry Collins; extended family; and many good friends. Peter
was the former President of the Sullivan Trail Boy Scout Council. He was a
dedicated Scout Master since 1963. Peter's family was the most important part
of his life and he treasured his time spent with Cameron, Alexandra, and Jaime.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, September 29, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at
Trinity Episcopal Church, 304 N. Main Street, Elmira. Donations in Peter's

CONFER - Brenda F. Bowers
Brenda F. Bowers, 62, of Marsh Creek Road, Wellsboro, died Sunday, Sept. 7,
2008 at Arnot-Ogden Hospital, Elmira, N.Y. She was the wife of the late
George V. Bowers who died Sept, 3, 1999. Brenda was born March 11, 1946 in
Wellsboro, the daughter of the late Harry C. and Winona Mosher
Confer. She was housekeeper for Soldiers and Sailors Memorial
Hospital for 26 years, a tax collector for 25 years, and building permit officer
for Shippen Township for ten years. She loved her family and friends and
hanging out with the kids. She enjoyed cooking and baking fruit and cream
pies. Surviving are son, Timothy J. (Shelley) Bowers of Wellsboro;
daughter, Tamara S. (William) West of Wellsboro; five grandchildren, Samantha
James, Cody Bowers, Zachary Bowers, Nicholas Bowers, Dakota Bowers; brother,
Willard (Jake) Confer of Wellsboro; sisters, Jean Kephart of Corning, N.Y.,
Sally Weeks of Chester, Va., and Marjorie "Kay" Dennis of Texas. She
was predeceased by brothers, Edward, Richard, Harold and Howard Confer, and
sister, Juanita Baer. Friends and family are invited to Brenda's

CROWLEY Stacey Lynn
Age 16, of Wellsboro, PA, died Friday, September 12, 2008, in Morris, PA Stacey
was born September 30, 1991 in Hollywood, FL, a daughter of Patrick and Uewanda
(Woodward) Crowley. She was a senior at Wellsboro Senior High School. Stacey
enjoyed music, computers, text messaging, and driving. She planned to attend
Mansfield University in the fall of 2009 to become a nurse. Stacey is survived
by her parents, Patrick Crowley, Wellsboro, PA, and Uewanda "Peony" (Woodward)
Crowley, Tioga, Pa.; a brother, Chris Michael Kimbell, Rochester, NY; a sister,
Jessica Evans, Shaverstown, PA; two nephews, Robert Shotwell and Devan Patrick
Evans; several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Marlene L. Hand, 66, of 104 Coates Hill Road, Elkland, died Saturday, Sept. 20,
2008 at Broad Acres Nursing Home, Wellsboro. She was born Nov. 14, 1941
in Wellsboro, the daughter of Leon and Grace Townsend Cruttenden.
Memorial service was conducted Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. at the Elkland
United Methodist Churh, Elkland with Rev. Larry O'Dell officiating.

DAVIS Rev. Dr. Willard L.
78, of Palm Bay, Florida, went home to his Savior on Sept. 10th. Born in
Ambridge, PA, he graduated from Elmira High School in 1948, received degrees
from Shelton College, NYU and Columbia Pacific University. He served as Pastor
of churches in Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Michigan, and Maryland, most
notably Pineview Community Church in Albany, NY, Ward Evangelical Presbyterian
Church in Livonia, MI, and Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD. Rev.
Davis is survived by Rosemary (Tobias) Davis, his wife of 58 years; his
children, Daniel, David, Todd, and Tami; eight grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service was held for Dr. Davis at Fourth
Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests

DelGENIO - BAHR, Anna Marie
Age 91, Went to be with our Lord Jesus on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at
Bethany Manor, Horseheads, NY. Anna was born in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of
the late Frank and Stephanie (Cambria) DelGenio. She lived much of her life in
Elmira Heights, NY. Along with her parents, her husband, Lewis Bahr; and
sister, Mary predeceased Anna. She is survived by her friend, Andrea Roman; her
Bethany Family; and many friends. Anna loved people; she enjoyed lifting the
spirits of those around her. She attended chef school in Buffalo, NY, and
enjoyed cooking for friends when she was able to. Later in life, Anna blessed
His Tabernacle Family Church with her presents. It was Anna's request that
there be no calling hours; family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial
Service on Monday, October 13, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc.,
1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira/Southport, NY. Her Pastor Michael Spencer will

DIX - GREENOUGH, DeLecia Mae
died in Creswell, Oregon, on October 3, 2008 at the age of 86 of age-related
causes. She was born July 6, 1922 in Gillette, PA to Lewis and Hazel (Congdon)
Dix. She graduated with honors from Troy High School in PA two years early and
went on to beauty school to become a beautician. DeLecia married C. Edward
Greenough during WWII and were married approximately 15 years. She was a
homemaker, mother, grandmother and senior companion. DeLecia was a prayer
warrior, enjoyed going for walks, loved to read, and especially enjoyed her
family. She was a member of the Creswell Faith Center, Creswell, OR. Survivors
include her sons, Dale "Happy" Greenough and wife, Janet of Creswell,
OR, and Steve Greenough and wife, Judy of Colville, WA; her sister, Rosalyn
Mark of Atlanta, GA; and brother, Donald Dix of Horseheads, NY. Her brother,
LaRue Dix, preceded her in death. Additional survivors are five grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren. A Life Celebration will be held on Sunday,
October 12, 2008, at the Creswell Faith Center, and Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral
Chapel in Cottage Grove, OR is in charge of arrangements, 866-942-0185.

DURNIN Douglas
Age 71, of Cedarville, Ohio, and formerly of Elmira, New York, died October 2,
2008. Doug was born April 1, 1937 in Harrisburg, PA, the son of James and Reba (Otto)
Durnin. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nan; daughter, Mandi (Brian)
Hanson of Cedarville, Ohio; and son, R. Shawn (Christina Brooks) of Horseheads,
NY. He is also survived by grandchildren, Melanie, Caleb, Brianna and Hayden
Hanson; and step granddaughter, Brittany Cunningham; and step
great-granddaughter, Hailey Pierce. Doug is also survived by sister-in-law and
brother-in-law, Dona and Jack Colberg of Mechanicsburg, PA; and two nieces and
a nephew and their families. Doug graduated from William Penn High School in
Harrisburg, PA in June 1956. He attended the University of Miami in Coral
Gables, FL and graduated from Mansfield University in 1963. He also graduated
from Ithaca College in 1967 with an MS in Music Education. Upon graduation from
Mansfield University, Doug taught instrumental music in the North Penn School
System in Blossburg, PA from 1963 to 1966. Doug taught instrumental music at
Ernie Davis Middle School in Elmira, NY from 1966 to 1992, when he retired due
to disability. Doug was principal trombonist for the Elmira Symphony and
Corning Philharmonic Orchestras for 33 years; Past President of the Downtown
Health Club in Elmira, NY. He played in many groups in the Miami, Florida and
Elmira, New York areas including the Corning Community Band and Family Life
Brass. He was a guest participant with the Cedarville University Symphonic Band
and a member of the Greene County Adult Community Band. He is a former member
of First Baptist Church, Horseheads, NY and Breesport Baptist Church, Breesport,
NY. He is currently a member of Grace Baptist Church, Cedarville, Ohio. He also
played in the orchestras of McGregor Baptist Church in Ft. Myers, FL, Breesport
Baptist Church, Breesport, NY, and Grace Baptist Church, Cedarville, Ohio. Doug
and Nan enjoyed wintering in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made in Doug's memory to the Student Ministries Fund at Grace
Baptist Church, PO Box 12, Cedarville, OH 45314; or a charity of your choice. A
memorial service will be held at Breesport Baptist Church, Breesport, NY at

Elmira, NY, October 3, 2008; Alan is the son of the late Herman and Olga
Petrasek Eberle. He is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Mark and wife, Christa
of North Carolina; stepchildren, Kevin Benson, Elmira, NY; Marc, Kelli and Kyle
Benson, Williamsport, PA; sister, Carol (Jack) Bundy, Wellsburg, NY; many
nieces and nephews. Alan served in the US Navy aboard the USS Ranger and
retired form New York State Dept. of Corrections at the Elmira Correctional
Facility. He was also employed by Holy Family Intermediate School. It was

FARRER - Mary Lou Townsend, age 91, of Mansfield, PA, died Wed., September 24, 2008, at the Green Home, Wellsboro, PA. Mary Lou was born December 31, 1916 in Houghton, PA, a daughter of Philip and Robbie Morris (Key) Farrer. She was a retired Special Ed teacher for Wellsboro Blast Unit. She enjoyed reading, bowling, gardening, flowers, cooking, and spending time with her family. Mary Lou is survived by four sons, Arthur Townsend, Jr. of Springfield, VA, Steven (Nancy) Townsend of Overland Park, KS, Richard (Frances) Townsend of Severn, MD, Neil Townsend and his companion, Floss Ralston of Mansfield, PA; three daughters, Phylis Townsend of Corning, NY, Sandra Hammeken of Tampa, FL, Lorraine Townsend of Mansfield, PA; 17 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Iloe Farrer of Mansfield, PA. FORCE Clifford "Tip"
Age 92, of Town Haven Apartments, Big Flats, died Sunday, September 14, 2008,
at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira. Tip was born in Caton on August 30,
1916, the son of the late Fred and Eva Force. He married Louise White on
January 27, 1979 in Caton, NY. Tip was predeceased by his first wife, Mary
Harder Force on August 28, 1976. Tip attended school in Caton and was a
self-employed dairy farmer in Caton for over six decades. He was a member of
the Caton United Methodist Church and the Caton Grange, and a former member of
the Caton Senior Citizens. Tip enjoyed spending time with his family and
friends, playing cards and traveling to Florida. He is survived by his wife,
Louise; one son, Andy (Kathy) Force of Caton, NY; three daughters, Susie (Pete
Guidi) Palombo of Painted Post, NY, Candy (Michael) Card of Caton, NY, and
Robin (Frank Percic) Force of Caton, NY; one sister, Gladys Gridley of Caton,
NY; one brother, Fred (Ethel) Force of Batavia, NY; stepson, Clifton (Shirley)
White of Caton, NY; stepdaughter, Donna (Gary) Nelson of Big Flats, NY;
grandchildren, Adam, Daniel and Mary Force, Randy and Kyle Palombo, Steven

HAIGHT - Seward Miles "Mike" Jr. 90, of Beverly, MA, formerly of Towanda and Troy, PA, died August 20, 2008 at Ledgewood Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center, Beverly, MA, following a lengthy illness. Mike was born June 9, 1918 in Mountain Lake, Bradford County, PA. He was the seventh child of nine born to Ethel and Seward M. Haight Sr. At the age of five he moved with his family to Luther's Mills, where he attended elementary school. He attended Troy High School and graduated in 1936. During his lifetime he owned a dairy farm, a restaurant, and later in his career he raised and raced standard bred horses. Mike is known for his ownership of Indian Trail Restaurant, a popular place with the locals in Towanda, PA, during the late 1950's and early 60's. Mike was a sports enthusiast and his restaurant catered to the Bradford County high schools' sports teams. He also followed the Wyalusing sports teams, where he enjoyed watching his two sons participate in wrestling. After selling the restaurant business in 1964, he turned his part-time hobby of racing standard bred horses into a full-time business. Mike proclaimed working with the horses afforded him the most satisfying work of his lifetime. During his racing career he traveled from Maine to Florida. He had two hundred seventy-five wins and numerous places and shows. After many years of racing and training, he sold his horses and worked as a Paddock Judge in raceways in Ohio and Florida. As Mike's health began to fail he moved to Massachusetts to live with his daughter, Judy, and later entered Ledgewood Skilled Nursing Center. Mike is survived by his daughter, Judy Manchester of Rockport, Massachusetts; a son, Gene Haight and his wife, Doreen of Horseheads, NY; grandchildren, Jeff Haight, Warren Center, PA, Rae Lynne Powell Stephenson, Athens, PA, Lesha Haight, Warren Center, PA, Brett Powell, Centerville, PA, Michael Haight, Rockville, VA, Philip Haight, Phoenix, AZ, and Matt Manchester, Austin, TX. He has 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is survived by a sister, Anna and her husband, Robert Perry of Sayre, PA; a sister, Doris Morris of Wellsburg, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry in 1987. He was also preceded by brothers, Carl, Merle, Vern, Robert and Floyd; and a sister, Helen. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 29, 2008, at 3 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, PA. HITE - Leone Hite, 54, of Canton, Pa., died while surrounded by her loving family on Saturday night, Oct. 4, 2008, at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. Leone Frances was born on March 31, 1954 in Waverly, N.Y. She was the oldest of seven children born in the family of Frances (Carnwright) and the late Kenneth Hite. A 1972 graduate of Canton High School, Leone received a Bachelors of Science Degree from Elmira College. She later earned a Masters Degree in Special Education from Mansfield University. Leone was a supportive giving person, a wonderful daughter and big sister. She loved being an elementary school teacher for several years in New Mexico and Syracuse, N.Y. Leone was very active in the Linus Program, making over 100 blankets and rag-quilts for needy children. She loved animals, especially cats and was an avid reader. Surviving are: her mother, Frances Hite of Canton; siblings, Lloyd (Beverly) Hite of Canton, Nancy Delgrippo of Alba, Barb (Dave) Groover of Canton, John (Tami) Hite of East Canton and Kenneth (Cheryl) Hite of Canton; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her father, Leone was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Hite and grandparents, Lloyd and Christene (Moore) Carnwright. Services will be private. JONES - Clair L. Jones, 70, of Coudersport, died at his home Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1975 after a long illness. He was born Dec. 1, 1905, in Corbet, a son of Jasper and Ada Jeffers Jones. Jacksonville, Florida. Muriel was born in Elmira, New York on May 30, 1966. She
is a 1984 graduate from Elmira Free Academy and is a 20-year veteran of the
U.S. Navy retiring in 2006. Muriel served as an Aviation Electronics
Technician, Substance Abuse Counselor, and earned her Bachelor's degree in
Human Resource Management. She leaves to cherish her memory and all those
special moments, her loving, devoted husband, Jeffrey A. Mason of Jacksonville,
FL; her loving mother, Sharon Jones of Syracuse, NY; sister, Marlynn of
Syracuse, NY; niece, Brittney of Syracuse, NY; grandmother, Ann R. Jones of

Canton, New York Dairy Farmer - "Dukie" of Caton, NY, died at
his farm on September 20th, 2008. Duane was a United States Navy veteran, who
served his country during the Korean War. For 35 years he and his wife of 52
years Marian Rose, whom predeceases him, operated a dairy farm. He is survived
by his daughter, Keitha Kessler of Red Bank, NJ; two brothers, Doug Kessler of
Pittsford, NY, and Lynn Kessler of Arvada, CO; three sisters, Rose Marie Potter
of Hudson Falls, NY, Linda Allan of Syracuse, NY, Donna Pfendler of Port
Leyden, NY. He also is survived by his special nephew, Eric Kessler and his
family of Pittsford, NY. Duane also leaves behind many other wonderful family

MORRISTON - Helen Dean Mathews, 91, a retired laborer, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001. A native of Cayuga, N.Y., she moved to North Central Florida in 1990. Mrs. Mathews retired from Remington Rand after 20 years of service. She was an active member of Sweet Water Ministries and Coyote Ridge Ranch. She was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Mathews; and a son, George A. Smith. Survivors include daughters, Shirley M. Graham was born June 21, 1922, in Glasgow, Scotland, a son of Gavin and Jean

Gavin. Graham is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly Jacque Pelling;

Age 90, of Newtown Road, Odessa, NY, died at his home on Saturday, October 4,
2008. He was born in Pelham, NY, the son of the late Giacomo and Elisa
(Zambelli) Pevo (Piva). His first wife, Frances Guilmette Pevo; son, Peter
Pevo; granddaughter, Marinda Pevo; sister, Mary Carlisto; brothers, Ben and
Andrew Pevo, predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; daughters,
Jacqueline Romanki (Stephen) and Elisa Millspaugh (Fred); son, Mario Pevo
(fiancée, Molly Fagnan). Mr. Pevo retired from Westinghouse as a Glassblower
and was a lifetime member of the Pelham, NY Fire Department. At Jack's request,

POLINIAK - NOVACK, Anna A.
Age 83, of Big Flats, NY, formerly of Shamokin, died Friday evening, September 26,
2008, at Arnot Ogden Hospital, Elmira, NY, January 1, 1925 in Library, PA, she
was a daughter of the late Andrew and Katherine (Soubik) Poliniak. Anna lived
the early part of her life in Shamokin, and was a 1943 graduate of Shamokin
High School. For the past fifty years she was a resident of Big Flats, NY. On
December 16, 1944, at Camp Springs Army Base in Virginia, she married Theodore
Novack, who survives. She was a homemaker and also worked as an aerobics
instructor. She was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Elmira
Heights, NY, Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church, Shamokin, PA, and the
St. Anna Society. Survivors in addition to her husband Theodore, include four
daughters and two sons-in-law, Andrea and Larry Taylor, Big Flats, NY, Daria
Berlin, Corning, NY, Marina Novack, Big Flats, NY, and Claudia and Bill
Hopkins, Pine City, NY; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Divine
Liturgy will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic
Church, Shamokin, with Rev. Mark Fesniak as celebrant. Burial will follow in

REED - Jeanette M. Maliszesky, age 87, of Big Flats, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, October 8, 2008. She was born on December 1, 1920 in Gibson, the daughter of the late Ross W. and Edith M. (Hall) Reed. She married Joseph J. Maliszesky on October 11, 1947 at St. Vincent de Paul Church. son of the late Henry Earl and Isabell (Randall) Shaul and died Saturday,

parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Earl Shaul; and sister, Jessie Hall;
and is survived by his wife, Darlene (Kinner) Shaul; children, Robert, Julie,
Carrie, Mike and Tammy; brothers, Edmond Faulkner and Lawrence; sisters, Vena

80, of Storrs, CT, wife of the late William Weideman, died Wednesday, October
8, 2008, at her home. She was born April 25, 1928, the daughter of the late
Efisio (Tony) and Rosie (Caporale) Simola. Jacqueline was a loving wife,
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was very active in her church,
St. Patrick's Church in New York. She had a special fondness for St. Theresa
because of her love of flowers. She was active in the Elmira/Corning Ballet Co.
Jacqueline loved to cook and bake for her loved ones. She also enjoyed sewing,
and volunteered for various charitable organizations, including the USO. She
was loved by all, and is survived by three daughters, Bonnie Baumgartner of
Storrs, CT, Cheryl Meir and husband, William of Somers, CT, and Jackie Ann Gunn
and husband, Adam of Moyock, NC; two sisters and a brother, Lucille Ritchey of
Aurora, CO, Katy Dole of Lonetree, CO, and Ted Simola of Cheyenne, WY; nine
grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her

Lawrenceville Man Dies from Injuries Received in Crash
A sixty-one year old Lawrenceville man died at Blossburg State Hospital Monday
morning following a motor accident occurring on Rt. 15 near Tioga on Saturday
evening. Francis L. Slocum of Lawrenceville RDr 2 was a passenger in a
car driven south by his wife Nora and which crashed head-on with a vehicle,
northbound, operated by Wilfred Mayo, 48, of Tioga. With Mayo was Theodore
Tedder, 33, of Tioga, Bernard Hall and Benjamin Mosher, Tioga Twp.
police, who investigated the accident, made the report. Mrs. Slocum
suffered a fractured left hip, left knee and right ankle and possible internal
injuries. Tedder received right leg and arm fractures and a dislocated
shoulder. Mayo sustained fractured ribs and cuts on leg and chin.
Francis Slocum is survived by his wife and two brothers, Carl of Wellsville, N.
Y. and Harold of Corning. Funeral services will be held at the Scureman
Funeral Home in Tioga at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (today), the Rev. John Chorney

90, of Owego, NY, died on Sunday, September 28, 2008, at Elderwood Tioga, in
Waverly, NY. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Gerald Hollenbeck; her
daughter, Ann Corson, Owego; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Don McCormick,
Mebane, NC; her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Shirley Hollenbeck, Owego;
her five grandchildren and spouses, Jerry and Jodi Corson, Lisa and Cliff
Sherwood, Rodney and Jill Stevens, Traci and Steve Ilardo, Michael Hollenbeck;
11 great-grandchildren; her brother, Donald Soper, Waverly; and several nieces
and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother, Florence; her father and
stepmother, Chauncey and Helen Soper; her sister, Gladys; brother, Richard; and
her son-in-law, Bill Corson. Jane was born in Elmira, NY on July 28, 1918.
After high school, she graduated from the Robert Packer Hospital Nursing
School, and worked there as a Registered Nurse. Jane was also a lifelong
devoted member of the Owego United Methodist Church. She cherished the
friendships made on Senior Citizen trips, and spending winters in Florida for
the last 22 years. Jane was a member of the Owego Garden Club, and beyond her
passion for flowers, she lived her life as a caregiver to family and friends
and her sincere concern was always for the care of others. A funeral service
will be held at the Owego United Methodist Church, 261 Main St., Owego, NY 13827,
on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Alan Jagger, Pastor,

Age 67, of 203 North Buffalo Street, Elkland, PA, died Monday, September 29,
2008, at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira, NY. He was born October 19, 1940,
the son of Floyd and Flossie Kibbe Steadman. He retired from Dresser-Rand in
2002. Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Army who was honorably discharged April
10, 1972. He was a member of Elkland Moose Lodge #746, V.F.W. Post #6753,
Knoxville, PA, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Addison, NY, River Valley Country
Club and Cowanesque Valley Rod and Gun Club. Richard was an avid sportsman,
golfer, hunter and enjoyed all sports. He is survived by his sisters, Mrs.
Carol Schriner, Lawrenceville, PA, Mrs. Eugene (Arloine) Beebe, Knoxville, PA;
brothers, Robert (Bernice) Steadman, Knoxville, PA, Ronald (Gerry) Steadman,

STURZEN - David Sturzen, beloved husband, father, grandfather and
well-known Towanda businessman, of 11 Watts St., Towanda, Pa., died

1955. Dave was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. Some have even
called him their hero. His actions spoke volumes about his character: He was an
honest, caring, loyal, generous, hardworking and loving man who touched the
hearts of so many people. His family and business, Sturzen Furniture, were the
light of his life. He was a self- made businessman who saw his dreams realized.
Aside spending time with his family, he also enjoyed being an active member of
the community. He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years — Annette
Sheehan-Sturzen; his sons and their wives — Joseph and Mary Sturzen, and Daniel
and Patty Sturzen; grandchildren — Melinda and Mike Cheresnowsky, Joseph
Sturzen Jr., James Sturzen, Daniel and Jeannie Sturzen Jr., Jeffrey Sturzen and
Kory Foster; great-grandchildren — Shelby, Daniel III and Vanessa Sturzen;
siblings — Ralph Sturzenegger, and Marie and Edsell Ayres; loving friend, Tina
Turner; and special neighbors Les and Elaine Sheridan, and Betty and Paul

TRYON Donald Lee
October 5, 2008, Age 72, of Scranton, PA, and formerly of Elmira, NY, joined
his beloved wife Ramona Faye Tryon peacefully with many of his children by his
side. Known by his family and friends as "The Speaker", Donald was
born January 15, 1936 in Elmira, NY, son of the late Mildred E. Comfort and
Clifford J. Tryon. After graduating from Southside H.S., Donald began his
passionate and dedicated career in the soft drink industry starting with Seven
Up, Pepsi Cola of Elmira/Binghamton and retiring with over 20 years as Sales
Manager for Crystal Soda Bottling Co. of Scranton, PA. Donald is preceded in
death by one son, James F. Tryon. Surviving are his children, Cynthia Tryon and
husband, Phil Allen of New Milford, PA, Jacquelyn Tryon and fiancé, Rodney
Axtell of Orange, NY, Donald Tryon and wife, Julie of New Milford, PA, Scott
Tryon and wife, Kristin of Lancaster, PA, Nicole Tryon and husband, William
Donaldson of Horseheads, NY, Todd Tryon and wife, Julie of Batavia, NY,
Christopher Tryon and wife, Kim of Denville, NJ; seventeen grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his

Age 53, of Gillett, PA, died on Monday, September 15, 2008, at home surrounded
by his loving family. Michael was born on June 10, 1955 in Elmira, NY, a son of
Earl W. and Patricia M. (Talada) Walker. He was married to Debra M.
"Debbie" (Bellows) Walker. Michael had been employed as a machinist
with Purolator in Elmira Heights, NY. He was a member of Coryland Church and
enjoyed spending time with his children and grandson, hunting, shooting and
horseback riding. In addition to his wife and his parents of Gillett, PA; he is
survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Christopher Michael and Tonya
Walker of Columbia Cross Roads, PA, Jeremi Jon Walker of Iowa City, IA; one
grandson, Curtis Michael Walker; a brother, John Walker of Gillett, PA; four
sisters and two brothers-in-law, Sharon and Phil Brown, Sandy Wolf, and Rita
Walker, all of Gillett, PA, and Anna and John Moretz of Millerton, PA. Michael

Mrs. Wolcott, Descendant of Pioneer Family, Dies
Mrs. Mary R. Wandler Wolcott, of 22 West Fourth Street, descendant of
Revolutionary families which pioneered the Pine Creek region, and for many
years genealogist for the Lycoming Chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution, died at her home at 1:10 o'clock Wednesday morning, Jan. 12,
1944. She was born in this city on May 25, 1857, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. John Wandler who then resided at Sixth and Pine Streets. Her closest
relatives are two cousins: Mrs. Lucy Knapp, of Snedkerville, N.Y. (s/b
Snedekerville, PA), and Mrs. Etta B. Flook, this city. She was a
life-long resident of Wiliamsport and a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church
for more than 55 years. Mrs. Wolcott was the widow of Albert B. Wolcott,
and was the descendant of three Revolutionary Soldiers: James English,
Claudius Boatman and Daniel Callahan. One of her ancestors was Rebecca
Boatman, who was scalped by the Indians in the Penn's Creek massacre of
1755. The ---and brother of Rebecca were killed in the same Indian
outbreak. For a period of time, as a young woman, Mrs. Wolcott published
the "Susquehanna Zeitung", a German language newspaper which she
inherited. She also wrote on historical subjects and for the last 23
years was genealogist of the Lycoming D.A.R. Chapter. Funeral
services will be held at 1:30 o'clock at the funeral home, 125 East Third
Street, with the Rev. J. Ray Houser, pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran Church,
officiating. Interment will be in Williamsport Cemetery.

A long time resident of S. Creek Township, PA died Monday morning, October 13,
2008 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following an illness at the age of 79.

WATSON Arthur S., Jr.
85, of Galeton, PA, died on Thursday, September 25, 2008. Born October 25, 1922
in Ridgway, PA, he was a son of the late Arthur S. Sr. and Anna (Walker)
Watson. Mr. Watson was a Veteran, having served with the United States Army
Corps of Engineers in New Guinea during World War II. On July 12, 1946 in
Bradford, PA, he married the former Wilhelmina Devling, who survives. After
returning from the war, Art worked for South Penn Oil Company in Bradford and
then retired from Devling Brothers, Inc. in Galeton. He enjoyed hunting,
fishing and bowling. He was proud that he had bowled a 300 game at the Galeton
Moose Lanes. Surviving, besides his wife, are a brother-in-law, Robert (Betty
Jo) Devling, Galeton; sisters-in-law, Patricia Klotz, S. Williamsport, PA, Mary
and Betty Devling, Galeton; a cousin, Ruth Perantoni, Woolrich, PA; nieces,
Wendy Warren, Gainesville, FL, Patricia Gleason, Queensbury, NY, and Cheryl
Ross, Ocala, FL; a nephew, Michael Watson; special nieces, Barbara (Dennis)
Smoley, Susan (David) Karvonen, and Holly Klotz; special nephews, Stephen
(Brenda) Devling and James (Madonna) Devling; and great-nieces, Megan and
Melissa Smoley, and Ashley and Sophia Devling. In addition to his parents, Art
was predeceased by a brother, Jack Watson; and a sister, Betty Chitester.

WHITE - J. Laurence White, 70, of Harrison Valley, PA, RD, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1975 in the Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, PA, where he had been a patient for one day. He was born April 6, 1905 in Troupsburg, NY, the son of James and Jennie Sweet White. He was married in Coudersport Oct. 20, 1928 to the former Emma Church who survives. WOLCOTT - Virginia G. Sheridan, 84 died Monday evening, Sept. 1, 2008 after an extended illness. Born Feb. 16,1924 in Sayre, Pa. she was the daughter of Earl and Margaret (Muir) Wolcott. She was predeceased by her loving husband Harold Sheridan in 1971 and by her brothers Lehman Eckenstein, Woodrow Wolcott, Charles Wolcott. Of Elmira, New York, and most recently of Hobe Sound, Florida, died September
18, 2008, at the age of 87. Signing her name with a J hand shape rolled over
the heart, she was well-known in the deaf community in Elmira and Williamsport,
Pennsylvania. Working throughout her adult life as a domestic, as an assembler
for Capabilities, Inc., and later for Winchester Optical, she was a proud
mother and a hard worker. She is the cherished mother of Catherine, Harry, Mary
and Richard Longenberger, and grandmother of Rick, Donna, Terry, Paul, Robert

Age 71, of Van Etten, NY, went home to be with the Lord on October 6, 2008.
Theresa is survived by her loving husband of over 50 years, Fred Maki Sr; her

(Bradley) Thomas. A resident of Van Etten, NY, Theresa was devoted to her
extended family which included many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She
