FAITH D. MAYNARD – In the early evening of Thursday, July 12,2001 the Lord called home the soul of His devoted servant, Canton-area resident, Faith Diane Maynard after a long, brave battle with cancer. She was 49 years of age. Born October 12, 1951 in Filmore, N.Y., she was the daughter of the Rev. Carroll Maynard and Verna Merrick Maynard. Faith had a lifelong devotion to the Lord and at an early age prepared herself for a career in education. She was a studious pupil, graduating from Gouverneur, N.Y. High School with the class of 1969 and attending Houghton College. Situations arise that necessitated the postponement of her educational goals and she worked as a legal secretary for a total of 21 years. As time and finances would permit, Faith continued her education on a part time basis while holding down a job. She worked in New York State for awhile and then moved to San Antonio, Texas for several years. But her heart was set on teaching and being closer to her parents, who were now residing in the Beech Flats area. She was living here in 1998 and was employed by Paper Magic when she learned of a teaching position at the Cornerstone Christian Academy in Remington, Va. Faith had so much to offer when it came to children’s education and ministry. She was gifted musically and was fluent in sign language. Faith returned home in June of this year with the hope of filling a teaching position at the Son-Shine Christian School, but her illness would not permit it. However, true to her name, her faith was unshakable. Her life had always revolved around church and family. She was a member of the Heritage Free Methodist Church in San Antonio, but in recent years she found a spiritual home in the Canton Mennonite Church, its members becoming part of her extended family. Even during her final days on earth, Faith was still reaching out to souls in need and through the peace that shone in her eyes, led them to the love of Jesus. Faith is survived by her mother, Verna at home; brothers, Michael (Linda) Maynard of Windsor, N.Y. and Gregory Maynard at home; sisters, Allire (Stephen) Bascom of Warrenton, Va., Laurel Maynard of Ruckersville, Va. and Michele Ayling of Gouverneur; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, the Rev. Carroll Maynard. A time of visitation will be held Sunday, July 15 from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at the Canton Mennonite Church, North Center and Union streets, Canton. A celebration of Faith’s life will follow at 7:30 p.m. with the Rev. Doug Graybill and the Rev. Michael Maynard officiating. Interment will be private. Professional services are entrusted to Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, Canton. –Towanda Daily Review 7/14/2001

DUSTIN ‘DUSTY’ MCNETT, 16 – During the early morning hours of Friday, Dec. 29, 2000 the Lord called home the soul of one of the Canton area’s most beloved young people, Dustin Jay McNett, while he was visiting family in Pine Valley, N.Y. He was 16 years of age. Known to family and friends as Dusty, be was born June 8, 1984, the second of three children in the family of Wesley and Teresa (Campbell) McNett of Roaring Branch. Dusty was the epitome of courage and forbearance. Although he suffered from a progressively degenerative disease which prohibited his going about life in the usual manner, he did live life to the fullest measure. Dusty was an eleventh grade honor student at Canton Area High School, participating in class room activities by way of a special television hook up. He had been a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and recently was inducted into the National Honors Society. He enjoyed watching films and enjoyed reading. Thanks to the ingenuity and loving care of his family he was able to pursue these activities on a regular basis. Much to the amazement of his instructor Dusty managed to meet all of the requirements of the hunter safety course, including marksmanship, with pinpoint accuracy. Modifications to his wheelchair enabled him to hunt and fish with great success. He was a shining example of how all things are possible if you believe in yourself. Dusty was also known to be a gourmet cook and connoisseur of fine coffees. He especially enjoyed surfing the Internet. His computer brought the whole world right to his fingertips and he would diligently embark on a campaign of comparison shopping if someone he knew was about to make an important purchase. Dusty was blessed with a loving, devoted family and they in turn were blessed by him. His charm and unique sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him, especially his teachers and fellow students. Earlier this year a class constructed a picnic area behind the high school which they dedicated to Dusty. This very special young man will live forever in the hearts of the people of this community. JAMES B. PACKARD, 77, West Covina, California died January 23, 1999. Born on a farm in East Canton, August 31, 1921, he was the son of Niles and Maime Packard. He had two older sisters, Beth and Lillian and an older brother, Raymond. He lost his mother to cancer when he was 13 and his father died from a stroke when he was 21. Mr. Packard attended Canton Schools and married his childhood sweetheart on Dec. 24, 1942 and promptly joined the Navy where he served as a gunner first class during World War II. Three years later, he was discharged on December 13, 1945. As children, he and Betty planned to go to California to live. They bought a little house in Bell where their daughter Gayle was born. In 1952 they bought a new and larger home in West Covina, CA where their son, Lee was born. It has been their home since then. Mr. Packard was gifted with many talents and abilities. After his discharge from the Navy, he worked as a heavy equipment operator and in 1966 he became an ironworker and welder. In 1954, both he and Betty came to know the Lord and accepted Him as their Savior. They joined Bethany Baptist Church. Mr. Packard served for some 39 years as an usher. He also served on the Board of Deacons and he became a “permanent” member of the property commission. He enjoyed driving the church bus for the youth activities and took the young people on numerous youth outreach programs. His greatest enjoyment in life was his children and grandchildren. Camping, dune-bugging and boating were things the whole family enjoyed together. He loved music and often played his guitar and harmonica and he encouraged his children to develop their musical talents. When he retired in 1984, he and Betty joined the Merry Twirlers in Glendora and started square dancing again, something they had enjoyed all during their dating years. They bought a motor home and traveled all over the United States, including Alaska, Canada, the great west territory, Prince Edward Island and New Foundland. They also went to Hawaii, Mexico, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and Jamaica. To celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, they toured 13 countries in Europe and Great Britain. On March 14, 1993 he suffered a massive heart attack and three days later he had a stroke which left him unable to speak and paralyzed on his right side. He received complete healing on Jan. 23, 1999 when he died.
