HOW TO SUBMIT OBITUARIES TO THIS SITE - Typed obituaries may be submitted by email to Joyce M. Tice either in the text of the email of by an attached file. PLEASE put OBITUARY SUBMISSION in the subject line of your email to help me sort the several hundred emails I receive weekly. Give your file an eight character name - do NOT call it OBITS or it will overwrite someone else's file. Make sure your full name is included so I know whom to credit. Submissions will be arranged alphabetically by SURNAME AT BIRTH, so make sure I know the correct birth name if you know it. KELLEY –STELLA K. COLEMAN, 96, a resident at Dar-Way Nursing Home in Estella (formerly of Mildred), died on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1993 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.  Born on Jan. 31, 1897 in Adams, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Dennis and Lola Nichols Kelley.  She was the wife of the late Emil Coleman of Mildred.  Mrs. Coleman enjoyed knitting, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles and had many memories of an eventful life earlier in this century.  At the age of 16, Stella Kelley moved from her family’s big farm to Watertown, N.Y. to work in a silk mill, where she learned to weave and ran three looms and earned $12 per week.  After she worked a while and had saved some money she bought a Ford four-door touring car.  A garage man in Watertown taught her to drive and took her to get her license, which required filling out a paper and taking a road test.  In 1926 she and a friend drove to California, where they lived in Los Angeles.  Stella worked in Hermosa Beach in a silk mill and her friend worked in a men’s clothing factory.  The friend married and stayed in California, but Stella returned to Watertown where she continued working in silk mills as a master weaver.  She worked in a defense plant in Elmira, N.Y. during World War II.  She married Emil Coleman, a widower in July 1945 and worked as a sewing machine operator in the pajama factory in Lopez.  According to Stella; “The pajama factory was not a silk mill.  In a silk mill you walked around your looms and were able to move around a lot.  In the pajama factory, you sat as a sewing machine and sewed seams for far less money.”  Stella and Emil decided to start their own business, “an ice cream store,” built at the corner of Charles Street and Route 487 in Mildred.  Shortly after they added a luncheon business, groceries, magazines and gas.  Emil died in 1970 and Stella closed the store and retired in 1978.  She left surviving two sisters, Jennie Cropsey of California and Marie K. Murphy of Staten Island, N.Y.; three stepsons and their wives, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Coleman of Horseheads, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. Francis W. Coleman of Silver Springs, Md. and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Coleman of Dushore and six step-grandchildren, Diane Coleman, Pamela Vilis, Valerie Tomlin and Kenneth Coleman, all of Silvers springs and Todd Coleman and Matthew Coleman of Dushore and two great-grandchildren, Drew Tomlin and Natalie Tomlin of Silver Springs.  The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, 1993 at 10:30 a.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore with the Rev. Joseph Cotner, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church of Mildred officiating.  Interment will be in the adjoining parish cemetery.  Friends and family are invited to call on Friday evening, Nov. 12, 1993 at the McHenry Funeral Home, Dushore from 7 to 9 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to any Sullivan County ambulance association in her memory.  –Towanda Daily Review
