MAX I. TEETER, 76 of Albany Township, Bradford County died as the result of a farming accident on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000.  He was born on Aug. 16, 1923 in New Albany a son of the late Joseph and Frances Campbell Teeter.  He was a graduate of New Albany High School class of 1941.  Mr. Teeter was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II.  For his service to his country he was recipient of the Silver Star, the Purple Heart and the European, African and Middle Eastern service medals with three Bronze Stars.  From 1951 until 1984 he resided in Elmira, N.Y.  Prior to his retirement in 1984 he was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service giving 28 years of service.  From 1947 to 1951 he worked with the Erie Lackawanna Railroad giving 20 years of service.  In 1972 he was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Sando Teeter.  Upon his retirement in 1984 he moved to the family farm, where he was born and lived there until the present.  In 1995 he was preceded in death by his second wife the former Mary Gardner Teeter.  His memberships included lifetime membership with the New Albany Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 384 a lifetime membership with the Clarence Oliver Post No. 154 American Legion and membership in the National Rifle Association.  He left surviving three daughters, Mary Ann Teeter of Elmira, N.Y., Michele Teeter Osburn of Elmira and Mrs. Robert (Marie Teeter) Dickinson of Wyland, N.Y.; grandchildren, Melissa Coleman, Joseph James Osburn, Daniel Dickinson and Elizabeth Dickinson; one great-grandchild, Nolan Coleman and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his wives and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Teeter and a grandson, David Dickinson.  Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore with the Rev. Robert W. Martin, pastor officiating.  Interment will follow in St. Basil’s Cemetery, Dushore.  Full graveside military honors will be accorded.  Friends and family are invited to call on Sunday, Aug. 27 at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home from 2 50 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  A military pass and review will be held at 7:30 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to a charity of one’s choice in Mr. Teeter’s memory.  –Towanda Daily Review

PAUL L. TEMPLE, 88, Muncy, PA died May 9, 2002 at Muncy Valley Hospital.  Born March 27, 1920 in Moreland Township, Lycoming County, he was the son of the late George and Blanche Temple Brown.  He served in the Army during World War II and belonged to the Muncy American Legion and the Senior Citizens at Muncy.  Mr. Temple attended Chestnut Grove Schools and was self-employed for 20 years driving a truck for the Daily Express, he also worked many years for the Agway Corp.  He lived 30 years in Towanda and had been at his current address 20 years.  Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Lee Suzanne Alexander, Towanda and Deborah Temple and her fiancé, Peter A. Geanacopoulos, East Stroudsburg; four grandchildren; brothers, Dean Brown, Muncy, Floyd Brown, Hughesville; sister, Lucille Campbell, Muncy.  He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Ruth Gearinger who died February 17, 1996 and his son William P. Temple on April 7, 1997.  Services were held May 13 at Bunnell Funeral Home, Inc., Millville with the Rev. Allen Acor of Strawberry Ridge United Church of Christ.  Burial was in Elan Memorial Park, Bloomsburg, PA.  –Canton Independent Sentinel

MILES A. TERIBERY died on Tuesday, January 21, 1997 at home.  He is survived by his sisters, Tiny Jones of Sayre, PA, Margaret Joynt of Baltimore, MD; brother, Alfred Teribery of Watertown, NY; several nieces and nephews.  Several dear friends including Christine Berger of Sayre, Janet Hemingway of Elmira, Debra McKinney of Florida, Pauline Pardee of Athens, PA.  Miles played bingo, was a member of the Elmira Christian Academy, worked for Thatcher Glass and Meals on Wheels.  Miles was always willing to help those in need.  It was his request that no services be held.  Memorial donations may be made in Miles’ name to the Elmira Christian Center Bus Ministries, 235 E. RALPH E. THALL, 75 of New Albany RR 2 died Wednesday afternoon, June 24, 1992 at Memorial Hospital following a lingering illness.  Born Nov. 29, 1916 in Albany Township, Bradford County, he was a son of the late Joe and Elizabeth Dibble Thall.  He was a lifetime resident of the New Albany area and had been engaged in the farming industry.  He was a member of Evergreen No. 163 F&AM, Monroeton.  On April 5, 1992 he and his wife, Alberta Wilcox Thall celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.  He is survived by his wife, Alberta; son, Bruce and Diana of New Albany and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Carmeta Thall of Canton.  The funeral service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore.  Friends may call at the McHenry Funeral Home Friday from 2 until the time of the service.  –Towanda Daily Review

DONALD L. THOMPSON SR., 67 of Towanda RR 4, Monroe Twp. died Thursday evening, May 25, 2000 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda.  Born April 3, 1933 in Towanda he was a son of the late Lester W. and Florence Chilson Thompson.  Donald was a graduate of Towanda High School class of 1952.  Following graduation he entered the U.S. Army in which he served during the Korean Conflict until 1953.  Upon returning home from the military, Donald was employed by the Daily Review in Towanda and was later employed by the Ingersoll-Rand in Athens for 35 years until his retirement.  He was a member of the AmVets, Post No. 261, Asylum Twp. and was an avid reader.  Surviving are three sons, Mark W. and his wife, Pam Thompson of Wysox, Lee D. Thompson of Monroeton and Donald L. Thompson Jr. of Monroeton; four grandchildren, Brittany Thompson, Kara Thompson, Kodi Thompson and Kolton Thompson; several nieces, nephews and cousins and a special friend, Elaine Thompson of Monroeton.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester R. Thompson Sr. and Ronald Thompson  A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 28, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda with the Rev. Thomas Geiger, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, Towanda officiating.  There are no calling hours.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to the Towanda Public Library, 104 Main St., Towanda, Pa. in Mr. Thompson’s memory.  –Towanda Daily Review

THOMPSON –LIDA E. JACKSON age 103 of RR 2, Box 32, Lacey Street, Laceyville died at her home on Lacey Street Tuesday morning, May 30, 1995.  She was born on June 23, 1891 in Towanda the daughter of Edward and Eva Finney Thompson.  Mrs. Jackson was the wife of H. Ray Jackson who died in 1953.  The Jacksons and their family owned and operated Jackson Farms on Lacey Street for four generations.  Mrs. Jackson was a member of the Skinners Eddy United Methodist Church in Laceyville, Pa.  She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Helen Salsman of Lacey Street, Laceyville and a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Betty Jackson of Lacey Street, Laceyville; also five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Burton Salsman who died in 1988.  The funeral service will be held Thursday June 1, 1995 at 1p.m. at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Laceyville.  Interment will be in the Lacey Street Cemetery.  At. TIFFT –VIRGINIA A. TIFFT SIMPSON age 63, of Meads Creek Road in Painted Post, NY, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, February 16, 2004, at Corning Hospital. Ginny was born in Bainbridge, NY, on December 2, 1940, the daughter of Francis Tifft and the late Gretchen Boughton. She married Leon Harry Simpson on May 4, 1984 in Curtis, NY. She retired from Corning Hospital in 2002 where she had been a technician. As a member of Curtis Baptist Church, she was active in many areas including the Prison Ministry at Cayuga Correctional Facility. Ginny loved music and singing. She served in the United Sates Marine Corps from 1966 to 1968. Survivors include her husband, Harry at home; her father, Francis Tifft of Pine Valley; one brother, Lawrence Tifft of Horseheads; a nephew, Chad (Linda) Tifft of Las Vegas, NV; and a goddaughter, Holly Farrand. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2004, from 10 until 11 a.m. at the Curtis Baptist Bible Church where funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Reverend Dale Ingraham officiating. DONALD A. TILLINGHAST age 72 of 7246 S. Main St., Ovid, NY died February 4, 1997.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Ovid Federated Church.  Friends may call on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Covert Funeral Home in Ovid, NY.  Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Ovid.  Memorials may be made to the South Seneca Ambulance Corps, Ovid, NY.  He was born August 10, 1924 in Jackson Summit, PA.  He retired in 1990 from the Seneca Army Deport, Romulus, NY and had been formerly employed at the Willard State Hospital and Porter-Wright Lumber Co., Lodi, NY.  He was a WWII veteran serving with the US Marine Corps.  He and his wife owned and operated Tillinghast Manor Bed ‘n Breakfast in Ovid, NY.  He was a member of the Knoxville-Deerfield Fire Co. in Knoxville, PA.  He is survived by his wife, the former Blanche Nogle; his son, John (Sally) Tillinghast of Interlaken; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna (Jack) Bishop of Dundee, Rita Cazalas, Tampa, FL and Sandra (James) Ike of Interlaken; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Bettie (Charles) Dunkleberger and Pat (Steve) Billiarakas, both of Dundee, Jean Kreps and MaryLou (Lee) Musser, both of PA, several nieces and nephews.  –Elmira Star Gazette

EDWIN W. TRASK, 84, Mansfield died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004.  He was the son of Maud and Earl Trask.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eleanor Cleveland Trask, daughter Connie (Jack) Baynes of Tucson, Ariz. and sons, Tommy (Debbie) Trask of Leesburg, Va. and Edward (Nancy Trask of Mechanics burg, Pa.  He is also survived by grandchildren, Sharon Baynes Murphy, Alan Baynes, Jeffrey Trask, Michael Trask, Stephen Trask and Scott Trask.  He had seven great-grandchildren.  He was a retired truck driver and diary farmer.  After retiring he enjoyed doing handiwork for neighbors and friends.  He was the owner of the Trask Mobile Home Park and partner in Grammas’ Kitchen restaurant and bakery.  His great delight in life was sharing a cup of coffee with his buddies.  He served in WWII.  He was a member of the VFW and the Canoe Camp Church of Christ (Disciples).  Friends are invited to call at the Buckheit Funeral Chapel, 637 S. Main St., Mansfield on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. to share memories and coffee from Grammas’ Kitchen.  On Saturday morning there will be a viewing at 10 a.m. and the service will follow at 11 a.m.  The Rev. TULE –RACHEL W. NORTON, 91, longtime resident of Shunk died peacefully February 6, 2002 at Williamsport Hospital.  Born December 2, 1910 in Barbours, she was one of eight children of the late John and Ivy Lewis Tule.  She was the wife of the late Harvey Norton.  For over 60 years they lived on their family’s dairy farm in Fox Township.  A hard working and resourceful woman, she raised 114 children and assisted her husband with the daily farming operations.  She was a talented seamstress a skill she not only utilized at home, but also while working for the Sullcraft Company in Dushore for many years.  Mrs. Norton enjoyed being involved in community benefits.  She supported the Endless Winds Fire Hall and the Western Alliance Ambulance Association.  She was affiliated with the Shunk United Methodist Church.  Her hobbies included quilting, crocheting, reading and gardening.  Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Neva and Lawrence Hartford, Shunk, Eileen and Albert D’Onofrio, Mildred, Iva and Earl Ayres, Canton, Artist and Burr Snell, Williamsport, Arla and Roger Pepper, LeRoy, Rhoda and Bernie Delellis, Shunk; Rheda and Larry Baumunk, Towanda; Marcele and Steve Clark, Fort Pierce, FL; sons and daughters-in-law, Malyn and Dotty Norton, Max and Minnie Norton all of Shunk, Galen and Kay Norton, Canton, Darrel Norton and Hal and Sharon Norton all of Shunk; sisters, Dora Tuttle, Elmira, NY, Dorothy Righmire, Ruth Blair both of Proctor, PA; Kathryn Snell, Bentley Creek; brothers and a brother-in-law, Dick Foulkrod, Williamsport, Ernest Foulkrod, Columbia Cross Roads; Ward Norton, Bentley Creek; 36 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  Mrs. Norton was predeceased by her loving husband, Harvey on September 12, 1988; daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Charles Heath; son-in-law, Miles Henry; brother, Ralph Foulkrod; four grandchildren.  The funeral and committal service was held February 11 at the Pepper Funeral Home, Canton with the Rev. TUNSTALL –MELVINA (DINKINS) FITCH age 41 of 1000B Hall Street, Elmira died unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 23, 1997 in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Elmira after becoming ill at home.  Born on January 6, 1956 in Mobile, Alabama, she was the daughter of Katie Petite Turnstall who survives her in Ithaca.  She has been employed with Borg-Warner in Ithaca for the past 3 ½ years and was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Ithaca and also served as an usher.  In addition to her mother, she is survived by husband, Robert A. Fitch at home; her children, Perez Rayvon Dinkins, Lopez Rayvon Whigham, Sonya Nicole Fitch; her granddaughters, Quianna Dinkins and Alicia Beale-Whigham; her sisters, Nancy Petite of Mobile, Al and Venita (C.C.) Smiley of Ithaca; her brother, Gerald Tunstall of Kentucky; her mother-in-law, Sara Fitch of Elmira; sisters-in-law, Denise Fitch and Ramona Fitch of Elmira; a brother-in-law, William (Linda) Fitch of Elmira and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.  Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 29, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church, Ithaca with the Reverend Daris Dixon Clark and Dr. George Fitch officiating.  Interment will follow in Frear Memorial Park, Ithaca, NY.  Friends may call Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Herson Funeral Home 110 South Geneva Street.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church-Usher Board, 507 N. TYLER –RUTH BROTZMAN of Allen Street, Meshoppen died Sunday morning, Nov. 25, 1990 at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock following a long illness.  Born in Auburn Township, Susquehanna County on Feb. 8, 1914 she was a daughter of the late Ray O. and Pearl Benninger Tyler.  She was a graduate of Laceyville High School class of 1933.  She lived at Peet Hill, Laceyville RD 1 for several years where she conducted a business of hosting summer vacationers as well as helping to operate a dairy farm before moving to her present address.  She was a member of the Transue Community Church and its Sunday school, serving as a teacher in the primary department for many years.  She also frequently attended the Braintrim Baptist Church in Laceyville and was a member of its Thursday morning Bible Study Group.  Ruth was also a member of the Transue Birthday Club, the Meshoppen Senior Citizens Club and several craft groups.  She was employed by the Bureau of Aging before her retirement in 1978.  She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Harriette) Bartron of Tunkhannock; a brother, Raymond B. Tyler of Laceyville; two sisters, Mrs. John (Rhea) Bouton of Pharr, Texas and Mrs. Frances Vogt of Elizabethton, Tenn.; two grandchildren; Michelle and Jarrod Bartron of Tunkhannock; a foster daughter, Mrs. Sydney (Elsie) Hall of Laceyville RD 1; five foster grandchildren; 13 foster great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.  Besides her parents she was predeceased by a brother, Francis.  The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Braintrim Baptist Church, Laceyville with the Rev. Reuben Judson, retired and the Rev. Charles Bishop, pastor of the Transue Community Church officiating.  Interment will be in the Jersey Hill Cemetery, Meshoppen RD.  The family will receive friends at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Meshoppen, Tuesday evening from 7-9.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent the Rev. and Mrs. David Stone in care of the Springville Baptist Church, Springville, Pa.  –Towanda Daily Review

DANNY LYNN UPDEGRAFF, 45 of Marsh Hill, died Friday, March 23, 2007 at The Gatehouse hospice.  Danny graduated from the Canton High School in 1980 and received a degree in welding from the former Williamsport Area Community College.  He was employed by I.C.I. in New Hampshire as a welder and boilermaker.  Danny was a member of the Ralston United Methodist Church and the American Legion in Canton.  Born July 10, 1961, in Williamsport, he was the son of Phyllis Gephart Atherton-Ely of Marsh Hill and the late Arthur L. Updegraff Sr.  Surviving in addition to his mother, with whom he lived, are brothers, Thomas (Susan), Wasilla, Alaska, Arthur (Robin) Jr., Marsh Hill and John (Nancy), Winebego, Ill.; sisters, Nancy “Tilly” (Hank) Vroman, Grover, Cynthia (Tom) Eoute, Jersey Shore and Kathy (Thomas) Campbell, Cogan House; four stepbrothers, four stepsisters, 17 nieces and nephews, 18 great-nieces and great-nephews, a special friend, Eve Bidelspacher, and caregiver, Ginny Forestal.  Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave., with the Rev. UPDIKE –DELORES MAE OWENS formerly of Gillett died June 24 in Fairfax, VA.  Born in Gillett on May 3o, 1930 she was the daughter of the late John F. Updike and Lucy Chase Updike.  The family lived in Gillett where she enjoyed climbing the mountains in the Pennsylvania sunshine while her father taught school.  She was active in sports with young people of the village.  The family moved to Falls Church, VA in 1943.  Surviving are her husband, Ralph Owens whom she married on January 1, 1948; four children and nine grandchildren.  A celebration of her life was performed at the Ox Hill Baptist Church, Clifton, VA June 27.  Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, July 17.  –Canton Independent Sentinel

VANCE –LISA J. (VANCE) ROSS age 39 of Cicero, NY died Wed., Oct. 2, 2002 in Syracuse. Born in Troy, Pa, she graduated from Canton High School, Canton PA in 1980 and Williamsport Area Community College, PA, in 1982.  She was an assistant Office Manager for La Valle Research, Syracuse, NY.  She was predeceased by her father Wayne Vance June 1999.  Survivors include; her husband of 18 years, James A. Ross, a daughter, Sara, a son, Joshua, a brother, Ronald Vance of Mainesburg, PA, mother, Rosetta Hemenway Vance of Canton, PA, and her paternal grandmother, Beulah Vance of Wellsboro, PA. GREGORY HOWARD VANDERPOOL, 39 of Towanda, Pa. died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda.  Born June 13, 1964 in Towanda, he was a son of Howard L. Vanderpool and Patricia Perry Vanderpool.  Surviving are his son, Gregory and Michael of Elmira, N.Y.; his mother and step-father, Patricia Perry Vanderpool and Eli Vanderpool of Waverly, N.Y.; his father and step-mother, Howard L. Vanderpool and Phyllis Vanderpool of Towanda; half-brothers, Douglas Vanderpool and his wife Betty Vanderpool of Monroeton, Terry Marshall of Towanda, Harold Vanderpool of Barton, N.Y.; half-sisters, Milissa Humphrey of Waverly, N.Y., Tresa Vanderpool of Daytona Beach, Fla., maternal grandmother, Rose Perry of Waverly, N.Y. ;several nieces, nephews and cousins; a special niece, Danielle Vanderpool of Towanda and his girlfriend, Lisa Beeman of Towanda.  He was preceded in death by a step-sister, Valerie Vanderpool on March 17, 1991 his paternal grandmother, Marie Vanderpool.  Funeral services will be private.  There will be no calling hours.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, Towanda, Pa.  –Towanda Daily Review

VANHORN –MRS. DOROTHY L. GRADEN, 55 formerly of South Broad St., Hughesville died at 6:10 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 1992 in the LaPorte United Methodist Home where she had resided for the past six years.  Mrs. Graden was born July 30, 1938 in Hughesville, daughter of Nelson R. and Florence M. Secules VanHorn.  She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hughesville and a former member of the Glenn Sharrow American Legion Post No. 35 Auxiliary.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Andrew Willis Graden who died June 13, 1986.  Surviving are a son, Timothy A. Graden, Danbury, Conn.; three daughters, Mrs. Anna L. Jordan, Hughesville RR 2, Mrs. Bonnie Dixon, Towanda and Mrs. Mary A. Pursel, Hughesville RR 3; two brothers, Carl VanHorn of Palaka, Fla. and Robert VanHorn of Muncy RR 4; a sister, Catherine L. Gordner, Hughesville RR 1; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville.  The Rev. George E. HARLAND G. VAN HORN age 89 of Cherry Township, Dushore RR 4 died on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at Memorial Hospital of Towanda.  He was born on Aug. 31, 1914 in Mildred a son of the late William and Minnie Bahr Van Horn.  Harland was a lifetime resident of Sullivan County and prior to his retirement he was a self-employed farmer.  He was a member of Redeemer United Church of Christ of Dushore and a former member of the Hereford Association.  He leaves surviving his wife, Edith Robinson Van Horn at home; a step-daughter, Carol Mann of Dushore RR 4; one sister, Florence Hotchkiss of Wellsburg, N.Y. and one brother, Revilo Van Horn of Penn Yan, N.Y.  Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 3, 2004 at 10 a.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore with the Rev. Robert W. VANNESS –ELLEN ANNA VANNESS MORGAN of Camas, Wash. died Saturday night, July 23, 1994 at Providence Medical Center, Portland, Ore. After a short illness with cancer.  She was the eldest child of the late Ralph M. and Edith Cole VanNess.  She graduated from Towanda High School in the class of 1944.  She married Clarence L. Morgan of Luthers Mills on March 30, 1945.  While Clarence was serving with the Navy she worked for several years in Elmira as a secretary at Bendix until she and her husband purchased the Erskin homestead at Ballibay, Camptown, Pa.  In 1959 she and Clarence moved with their family to Mesa, Ariz.  While there she was employed at Motorola for several years.  In 1966 the family moved to Camas, Wash. where she worked for over 20 years for Crown Zellerback and James River Co.  She retired from there in 1988.  She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donald R. and Sue Morgan of Camas; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Guy Hughes of Vancouver, Wash. and Carol and Lance Smith of Camas, Wash.; a daughter, Susan Gibson of Camas; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Leo Lines of Macedonia; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Lula VanNess of Modesto, Calif.; a brother, L. James VanNess of Monroeton; an aunt, Anna Ridler of Tioga Nursing Home, Waverly and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  She will be remembered by her family and many friends for her kind personality, her friendly smile and her zest for life and love of reading.  The funeral will be held Wednesday at the Brown Funeral Home, 410 N.E. VANSILE –BERNICE L. CARD age 78, formerly of Village Manor Apartments, Painted Post, NY died Thursday November 21, 2002 at Schuyler Hospital.  Bernice was born March 15, 1924 in Rathbone NY, daughter of Erwin and Estella Williams VanSile.  She became the wife of Clinton L. Card June 27, 1942 in Corning, NY, he predeceased her in August of 1993.  Bernice was employed by Corning Glass in the apparatus division from 1950 to 1955.  She had been active in the Corning Women of the Moose, the American Legion Auxiliary, active member in the VFW Auxiliary for 39 years.  Bernice was a very proud volunteer for the Bath Veterans Volunteer's Services in Bath NY for 39 years. Surviving Bernice are sons and daughters-in-law; Duane C. and Linda Card of Painted Post, Roderick and Shirley Card of Arizona, Alan & Patricia Card of Horseheads, Randall L. Card of Virginia; a daughter Gloria Condon of Horseheads; a brother Donald (Miriam) VanSile of Big Flats; a brother-in-law Donald (Jean) Card of Corning, thirteen grandchildren, five step grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, thirteen step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.  Predeceasing Bernice were her husband of 51 years Clinton; half-sisters and brother; Arlene Mapes, Inez Hilton, Margie Sauerbrie, and George Cole.  Friends are invited to call at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. VARGASON –ELEANOR J. EDKIN age 80 of Forksville RR 1 died Tuesday July 4, 2000 at the Dar-Way Nursing Home in Forksville, Pa.  She was born Sept. 26, 1919 in Estella, Pa. a daughter of the late Frank and Laura Birdsall Vargason.  Eleanor was a graduate of Loyalsock High School in Estella.  She had been a lifetime resident of Sullivan County.  Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Sullivan County school system as cafeteria staff, giving 31 years of service.  She was also a cook for the Russ Houk Maple Lake Wrestling Camp for 25 years.  Mrs. Edkin was a member of the Estella United Methodist Church.  On Feb. 1, 2000 Eleanor and John W. Edkin celebrated 59 years of loving marriage.  She left surviving her husband, John W. Edkin at home; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Ann Loose of Hamburg, Pa., Mrs. James (Jane) Hoover of Forksville RR; sister, Mrs. LaRue (Mary) Litzleman of Campbellsville, New Albany RR; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  Friends and family are invited to call on Thursday July 6, 200 at the Russell P. CLAIR F. VOUGH, 77, who was instrumental in bringing IBM to Lexington, Ky. Died Nov. 25, 1988 at St. Joseph Hospital (Ky.) after a long illness.  He was born in Overton, Pa. on April 10, 1911, a son of Ira and Helen Musselman Vough.  He graduated from New Albany High School, class of 1928.  He attended Wilkes-Barre Business College before joining IBM.  Mr. Vough spent more than 40 years with International Business Machines Corp. rising from an employee on the assembly bench to a vice president.  He was involved in the Boy Scouts on a local and national level.  He was a member-at-large of the National Council of Boy Scouts of America and he helped raise money to start Camp McKee Boy Scout Camp where Vough Lake carries his name.  Mr. Vough retired in 1975 as vice president of manufacturing for the office products division and director of world trade manufacturing.  After retirement he wrote a book “Productivity” in which he charted the progress of IBM typewriter manufacturing from 1957 to 1967.  He was active in many business and civic organizations.  Mr. Vough was predeceased by a brother, Lynn M. Vough of Endicott, N.Y.  He is survived by his wife, Lois Vough; a daughter, Audrey Vough of Lexington and a son, Gary D. Vough of Lexington; a sister, Grace Treaster of Dushore; a granddaughter, Heather Vough of Lexington and three nephews.  A funeral service was held in Southland, Ky.  Memorial contributions may be directed to the Kentucky Diabetes Association.  –Towanda Daily Review

VOUGH –EVELYN F. HIGLEY age 72 of Benton, Pa., formerly of Forksville died on Thursday, April 18, 2002 at the home of her son.  She was born on Jan. 23, 1930 in Sayre a daughter of David and Edith Treaster Vough.  In 1947 she graduated from Estella High School.  Evelyn was a lifetime resident of the Sullivan County area.  On Jan. 25, 1948 Evelyn married Donald Ralph Higley in Towanda.  She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Overton.  Her other memberships included; the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce, on which she was the first woman to serve, the Loyalsock Watershed Association and the Pennsylvania Campground Association.  She enjoyed time spent doing crossword puzzles, watching birds and traveling.  She loved birds and nature.  Mr. and Mrs. Higley had owned and operated Higley Campground for many years and she recently owned and operated a restaurant in Benton, Pa.  On July 19, 1971 she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Donald R. Higley.  She left surviving seven children and their spouses; Linda R. and William R. Massengale of Utah, Jack and Karen Higley of Raymond, Maine, Dottie Ann and James Pardoe of Forksville, Ronald C. and Linda L. Higley of Honeoye, N.Y., Phillip W. Higley of Dushore, Michael D. Higley of New Albany and Mitchell Dean and Penny Higley of Dushore; two brothers, Harvey Vough of Dushore and Victor Vough of Athens; a step-mother, Francis Reed Vough of Dushore; a step-brother, Robert Reed of Sayre; by 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Rohe of Overton and a granddaughter, Toni Michelle Higley.  Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 22, 2002 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Overton with the Rev. Robert W. Martin, her pastor officiating.  Interment will follow in the Forksville Cemetery, Forksville.  Friends and family are invited to call on Sunday evening, April 21, 2002 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Russell P. VOUGHT –NELLIE VOUGHT MACCAMLEY, 87 of Troy RD 3, formerly of Binghamton, N.Y. and Towanda died Thursday afternoon, Sept. 21, 1989 at the Troy Community Hospital.  Born July 19, 1902 in Rome she was a daughter of Willis E. and May Meracle Vought.  On Sept. 24, 1927 she married Harry MacCamley.  He preceded her in death on March 7, 1953.  Mrs. MacCamley was formerly employed as a practical nurse at the Jennings home in Towanda for several years.  She is survived by a brother-in-law, Paul K. Marshall Sr., Troy RD 3, sister-in-law, Genevieve Vought of Conklin, N.Y., several nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Florence Miller, Helen Vought and Winifred Vought Marshall and by two brothers, Wilton and Harry Vought.  Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.  Interment will be in Chenango Valley Cemetery, Binghamton, N.Y.  Arrangements are under the directon of the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, Towanda.  There will be no calling hours.  –Towanda Daily Review

FRANCIS W. (JAKE) WALDRON of Dushore RD died April 18, 1984 at his home.  He was born in Dushore December 15, 1912 a son of Thomas and Florence Broschart Waldron.  He attended local schools.  He married Kathry A. Cook of Dushore, October 6, 1935.  She died in 1981.  During World War II he served in the U.S. Army, was wounded twice and was awarded the Purple Heart with oak leaf clusters.  After the war he worked as a plumber for several years and was later employed by Berlinger Silk Mill in Towanda as a textile mechanic.  Still later he was employed at the Dushore silk mill and the Warshow Textile Corp. of Montoursville.  He retired in 1976.  He was a member of St. Basil’s Church, Dushore and its Holy Name Society.  He was also a member of Loyalsock Post 996, American Legion, Dushore.  Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. H. Rodney (Lorrain) Detrick of Cortland, NY; Mrs. John (Kay Frances) Finn of Gardner, NY; two brothers, Martin of Dushore and Leonard of Lopez; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Duran and Mrs. Agnes Bernatavitz, both of Dushore; also seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held Monday, April 23 at 9:30 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, Dushore followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Basil’s Church, Rev. Eugene R. BERNARD WILLIAM WALSH age 91well known former Sullivan County Commissioner died on Monday, January 23, 200t at the Highlands Care Center in LaPorte, PA.  Bernie was born May 27, 1914 in Murraytown, PA a son of the late James and Evelena Bonci Walsh.  In 1920 he went to work in the Murraytown mines as a breaker boy and later worked on the shaker chutes.  He graduated from the three year Lopez High School in 1931 and from Dushore High School in 1932.  Following graduation, he took a business course at St. Basil’s.  For a short time he worked at Elmira Bridge and for the state as an equipment clerk.  Bernie went to work at Fitzpatrick & Connelly in 1945.  He was there when it became Fitzpatrick & Lambert and retired in 1978.  He served on the Cherry Township election board as judge of election.  He also served as Sullivan County Commissioner from 1960-1968 and 11972-196.  He also served on the Sullivan County Board of Elections during his terms as commissioner.  Bernie later served with other retired commissioners supervising the election process when the commissioners’ office was on the ballot.  He joined the Dushore Fire Company in 1958 and served as fire police captain for many years and began driving the ambulance in 1978.  Bernie drove the ambulance for many years and continued through his retirement years, almost on a daily basis until his 90th birthday.  Bernie became a member of the Sullivan County Board of Assistance in 1998 and retired from that post earlier this year.  He was an active member of St. Basil’s Church and belonged to the former Holly Name Society.  He and his family have baked beans for the St. Basil’s and St. Francis (Overton) Picnics for over thirty years.  On June 26, 1943 he married Rosemary Gainer of Dushore.  They are the parents of four children; Mary Lou Meehan, Wyalusing, Jim Walsh, Dushore, Eileen Walsh, Denver, Colo. and Peggy (Bill) Black, LaPorte.  The have six grandchildren and two great-grandsons; a sister, Martina Cavanaugh of Concord, NC formerly of Elmira Heights, NY and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by four brothers, Joseph Walsh, Lewis Walsh, Mark Walsh and James Walsh.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at 10 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA with the Rev. Bert S. PHILIP M. WARREN – During the early morning hours of Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004 the Lord called home Philip Martin Warren after a courageous battle with cancer.  He was 73 years of age and at the time of his passing was surrounded by his beloved family in the same Canton residence where he was born Feb. 19, 1931.  Philip was one of four children in the family of Leslie and Doris (Furman) Warren and after graduating from Canton High School he pursued a career as a self employed industrial electrician.  He was employed for several years in Elmira, N.Y. before moving to the Philadelphia area where he worked for over 30 years.  After retiring in 1997 Philip returned to his Canton roots and was a familiar face behind the counter at Baldwin’s Hardware Store always willing to go out of his way to assist a customer.  He was a tall, soft spoken gentleman with an ever present smile.  In his spare time he was a avid reader and in earlier times he enjoyed working with horses.  Although he enjoyed the quiet, solitary side of life, Philip was a man who could always be counted on to lend a helping hand to all in need.  He was a man who truly knew his Lord and a member of the Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) in Canton.  Philip is survived by his brother, David (Dorothy) Warren of Big Flats, sister, Ruth Ward of Canton, RR4, sister-in-law, Marlea Warren of Minneapolis, Minn., aunt, Katherine Furman of Sayre as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard in 1973.  In accordance with Philip’s expressed wishes there will be no calling hours or services.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Morse & Kleese Funeral Home, Inc., 40 N. WATKINS –NAOMI STAHLNECKER, 99 died at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at her residence in Rose View Manor.  She was born the daughter of Thomas and Ina Mays Watkins in Blossburg, where she spent her childhood with 11 sisters and five brothers.  As a young adult she moved to Williamsport and spent the rest of her life there.  She was the widow of John Stahlnecker and was also preceded in death by her first husband, Edwin Matson and a son, “Buddy”, 14 siblings and her beloved friend and hunting and fishing companion, Herb Hull.  Naomi was a world traveler.  She was very proud to have been a woman pilot at a time when there were few and cherished her membership in the 99’s, the International Association of Women Pilots.  She flew in air races in the 1950s and 60s.  She was an avid hunter and fisherman.  She loved the sporting seasons in Pennsylvania and also enjoyed hunting in Canada, Alaska and Africa.  In her 70s she made two safaris to Africa where she took a rare black-maned lion out of Kenya.  She is survived by a brother, Kenneth Watkins of Morris Run, sister, June Draxler of Pine City, N.Y., a nephew, Arthur Watkins of Liberty and other nieces and nephews.  At her request there will be no visitation or funeral.  A private memorial service will be held at a later time.  –Williamsport Sun-Gazette

WILLIAM H. WAUGH, 59 of Williamsport died December 16, 2000 at the Williamsport Hospital.  Born July 15, 1941 in Marsh Hill, PA he was the son of Harry and Evelyn Brady Waugh.  He and his wife the former Constance A. Mosier celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on August 20.  He had worked for Eastern Wood Products, Williamsport.  He was a member of Heilman United Methodist Church and was formerly a member of the Marsh Hill United Methodist Church.  He served in the United States Army.  Surviving besides his wife are; daughters, Margery L. Schammel, Baldwin, MD, Julie E. Fernsler, Montoursville, PA; brother, John Waugh, Marsh Hill; sister, Laura Waugh, Millville; four grandchildren.  Friends will be received Thursday, December 21 at the Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, PA from 10 to 11 a.m.  A memorial service will immediately follow with the Rev. WEBB –BARBARA A. BRYINGTON age 60 of Horseheads, died September 2, 2002 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center.  Barbara was born December 10, 1941 in Horseheads the daughter of the late Leslie and Emily Kimble Webb Sr.  She married Clyde Bryington on December 30, 1973 in Big Flats. Barbara attended the Full Gospel Church of Catlin Center.  She enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, dogs and animals, and living on a farm.  Surviving Barbara is her husband Clyde, daughter and son-in-law Michelle and Raymond Wright of Dundee, brother and sister-in-law Leslie and Sandy Webb Jr. of Big Flats, sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Edward Novick of Horseheads, five grandchildren and very special friend and loving companion, Richard Johns of Horseheads.  In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by a granddaughter.  A Memorial service will be held at Hill's Funeral Home, 69 Main St., Big Flats on Friday, September 6, 2002 at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Larry Parker officiating.  Memorial donations in Barbara's name should be directed to the American Cancer Society, 1316 College Ave., Elmira, NY.  –Elmira Star Gazette

STEPHEN D. WEBSTER, 77 of South Plainfield, N.J. died Friday, April 1, 1988 at the Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield, N.J.  He was born in Powell, Pa.  He had resided in Towanda, Pa. before moving to South Plainfield 44 years ago.  He was employed as a trainman for the Lehigh Valley Railroad of Perth Amboy, N.J. for 41 years before his retirement in 1975.  He was a member of Towanda Elks Lodge No. 2191 and the Towanda Eagles Club.  He was also a member of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Association, the American Association of Retired Persons and South Plainfield, New Jersey Senior Citizens Club.  Surviving are his wife, Elsie Austin Webster; two daughters, Margaret Allen of New Albany and Betty Lou Lewis of Monroeton, Pa.; three sons, David Austin of Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., Douglas Austin of Edison, N.J. and R. WEBSTER –SUSAN N. MORGAN, 96 a long-time resident of Shunk, died peacefully November 21, 1999 at the Dar-way nursing home in Estella.  Born October 10, 1903 in Jackersville, PA she was one of nine children born to the late Merton and Rose Brown Webster.  In earlier years, she attended the former Masten School.  On December 3, 1921 she married Alex D. Morgan in Williamsport.  As a young woman she was employed by various businesses in Masten including the general store, Post Office and train station.  In 1925 Alex and Susan moved by way of horse and wagon to make their home in the Shunk area.  Together they established an auto garage in Shunk where she assisted her husband in the office until their retirement in 1964.  Mrs. Morgan was a dedicated member of the Shunk United Methodist Church.  She started teaching Sunday school in 1927 and taught until the mid 1980’s, served as the church’s treasurer for over 50 years and also played the piano for Sunday school and church services, served as secretary of the ladies aid, an office held for many years.  She was a 62 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Canton Lodge No. 71 and received a 30 year service award from the National Weather Service for her participation in gathering weather data.  Susan also was active with the Civil Air Patrol during WWII.  Throughout life, Mrs. Morgan’s main interest was her home and family and the love they shared.  She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, gardening and reading.  She always gave of her time and self to many church and community affairs and will be remembered for her willingness to help out where ever needed or just to offer a comforting word.  Surviving are: a daughter, Ina Mae Bagley, Shunk; five grandchildren, Drew and Regina Bagley, Zane and Rebecca Bagley, Craig and Jamie Bagley, all of Shunk; Vickie and Denis Boyd, LeRoy; 15 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins, special friends, Leona Frey and family.  In addition to her husband, Alex who preceded her in death March 20, 1967 after 45 years of marriage, Mrs. Morgan was also preceded by a son-in-law, Walter Bagley; her siblings; Frances Hofper, Helen Haus, Fannie Warner, frank, Eugene, Fred, Leon and Clinton Webster; and a special friend, Lawrence Frey, Sr.  Friends may call 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24 at the Shunk United Methodist Church.  The funeral service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. WEIGHTMAN –FLORETTA JEAN NORTON, 83 of Harveys Lake, Pa. formerly of Elkland Township died Saturday, April 13, 2002 at General Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.  She was born May 21, 1918 in Williamsport a daughter of the late Charles and Saide Weightman.  Prior to her retirement she was employed by Sull-Craft Manufacturing in Dushore and Reynveld’s of New Albany.  On Feb. 21, 1972 Floretta was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon L. Norton.  She was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Elkland.  She was a 60 year member of the Bethel-Estella-Forksville Club and a 16 year member of the Craftsmen of the Endless Mountains.  Floretta loved crafting, doing ceramics, crocheting, playing piano and square dancing.  She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Wilson of Harveys Lake; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Aileen Norton of Montoursville; brother, Robert Whiteman; half-sister, Sue Allen; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2002 in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore with the Rev. Robert W. WEISBROD –ANNA MARY TRICK, 85 of Dushore, Pa. died at her home on Thursday, Sept. 14, 1995.  Born on Feb. 7, 1910 in Cherry Township, Dushore, Pa. she was the daughter of the late Walter and Martha Streby Weisbrod.  In 1928, Anna graduated from Dushore Public School.  On Oct. 31, 1941 she became the bride of Augustus Harvey Trick Sr.  It was a loving marriage that last 48 years.  In 1931 Anna graduated from the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.  Her employment included Weldons, in Lopez, Pa. until its closing, Commonwealth Telephone Company and Stopyra Nursing Home.  Mrs. Trick was the first nurse to work for the LaPorte Medical Center, retiring in 1979.  She was president and member of the Dushore Quilt Club since its beginning, she was a member of Redeemer United Church of Christ in Dushore, she was treasurer and member of the United Church of Christ Women’s Guild, was a member of Consistory of the United Church of Christ, was a member and past treasurer of the Craftsmen of the Endless Mountains, Inc. and was secretary for Peace Cemetery Association.  Anna was an avid quilter and displayed her quilts and other handcrafts at the Railroad Street Shoppes in Dushore for the last nine years since its opening.  She and her daughter, Pauline and granddaughter, Paula often displayed their crafts together and were featured as “three generations of crafters.”  She enjoyed her garden and preserving the foods from it for herself and members of her family.  She loved making things for her family whether it was a special pie or other food whenever someone came home to visit.  Anna was always willing to help out wherever needed.  She left surviving sons and daughters-in-laws; Walter and Marie Trick of Haymarket, Va., Dale and Charlotte Trick of Adamstown, daughters and sons-in-laws, Mary Ann and Lawrence Bachman of Watsontown, Pauline and Raymond Kelley of Dushore, daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jean Trick of Seattle, Wash.; 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Anna was preceded in death by her husband, the late Augustus Harvey Trick Sr. in 1979 and their son, Augustus H. Trick Jr. in 1987.  Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 18, 1995 at 11 a.m. in Redeemer United Church of Christ in Dushore with Rev. Robert W. Martin, her pastor officiating assisted by Rev. KURTIS ROBERT WEISS, 30, Monroeton died early January 31, 2003 at the Robert Packer Hospital Sayre as a result of injuries sustained in an all-terrain-vehicle accident.  Born June 27, 1972 in Sayre, he was a son of Robert J. and Wanda Isbell Weiss.  He was a graduate of Towanda High School class of 1991.  He was employed by Craftmaster, Inc., Wysox.  Mr. Weiss was a social member of Beirne-Webster V.F.W. Post No. 1568, Towanda.  He enjoyed hunting, racing, animals, the outdoors and playing guitar.  Surviving are his parents, Robert and Wanda Weiss, Monroeton RR2; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Lisa Weiss, Monroeton RR2; his paternal grandmother, Gertrude Vough, who is a resident of the Bradford County Manor, Burlington; his maternal grandmother, Isabelle Isbell, Monroeton; his loving companion, Sherri Weiss, Roaring Branch; step-sons, Thomas, Roaring Branch and Randy of Florida; nephew, Frankie Weiss, Monroeton and his dog and best friend, “Buddy”.  A memorial service was held February 3rd at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral home, Towanda with David Zozza officiating.  The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Bradford County Humane Society, P.O. GERALD F. ‘GIBBY’ WELCH, 86 of 134 Mcduffee St., Sayre died at the Robert Packer Hospital Thursday, April 5, 2001.  He was born Dec. 4, 1914 in Towanda, the son of Bernard and Charlotte Strange Welch.  For 50 years he had been a member of the local congregation of Jehovah Witnesses.  He was a presiding overseer for the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in South Waverly for many years.  An avid Bible student, he had been an ordained minister since September of 1951 and remained very active in the ministry and pioneered for over 20 years.  He was always ready to help others in need.  He was predeceased by a sister Margaret Luther and a brother, Thomas Welch.  He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ester at home; daughter, Jeannette “Jeannie” and Gene Wilcox of Ithaca, N.Y.; grandchildren, Ester Louise and Rodney Sams of Flower Mound, Texas, Neil J. and Rachael Wilcox of Ithaca, N.Y. and Gerald G. and Tammi Wilcox of Baltimore, Md.; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Rasmussen of New Jersey; numerous nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Robert Luther of Athens and a sister-in-law, Thelma Welch of Sayre.  Per the family’s request there will be no calling hours.  A memorial service will be held Monday, April 9, 2001 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, 62 Pitney St., South Waverly, Pa. with Roby Boothby officiating.  Burial will be in Resurrection Park, Lansing, N.Y.  Memorial donations may be directed to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, 62 Pitney St., South Waverly, Pa.  –Towanda Daily Review

ROY MAXFIELD WHELDEN JR., 83 a resident of the Inn at Deerfield (New Hampshire) assisted living center died September 7, 2003 following a steady decline over the past year.  He was born April 2, 1920 in Cumberland, ME to teacher and biologist Roy M. Whelden, Sr. and wife Leonora Dyer Welden.  He graduated from Alton High School in 1938.  A series of part-time jobs followed that included picking apples and blueberries and working on a road crew.  When World War II drew the US in, Roy interrupted his college training and enrolled in the Army.  Over the next four years, he served as military police and then as meteorologist.  Following the war, Roy was introduced to an Alton High School teacher named Evelyn Merritt who loved mountains, adventure and the outdoors as much as he did.  They soon married.  Upon Roy’s graduation as a geologist from the University of New Hampshire, the Wheldens found themselves in New Mexico and Montana pursuing work with various mining companies.  They had three children, Roxanne, Roy III and Lynne.  Roy eventually found work with New Hampshire Department of Employment Security for whom he worked until his retirement 30 years later.  Roy had many interests.  He formed the Polton stamp collecting business with attorney Vin Yeaton that lasted half a century.  He loved to hike and ski and climb.  In 1985 he was awarded the 4000 footer certificate from the Appalachian Mountain Club for having climbed all 4000 peaks in the White Mountains.  Another outdoor activity he pursued with vigor was cutting firewood.  He was also an avid outdoors photographer as well as a collector of coins, books and antiques.  He is predeceased by Evelyn Whelden by 34 days and their daughter Roxanne Whelden.  Surviving are both sons, Roy Whelden III and Lynne Whelden and a sister, Evelyn Bradshaw.  –Canton Independent Sentinel

WELLS –ELLA W. ‘PEGGY’ SMITH - Southport Resident age 86 of Bartholomew Road Pine City, NY went home to be with her Lord, Sunday, January 12, 2003 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center.  She was born September 20, 1916 in Snedekerville, PA the daughter of the late Frank and Clara (Oldroyd) Wells. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James S. ROBERT H. ‘BOB’ WHEELER, 74, well known Canton resident died at home November 27, 2004.  Born on July 8, 1930 in Williamsport he was the son of the late Arthur and Leona (Hannan) Wheeler.  Soon after graduating from Williamsport’s St. Joseph’s Catholic High School he enlisted in the U.S. Army.  He was a veteran of the Korean War and felt honored to have served with the Presidential Honor Guard for President Truman.  On March 19, 1949 he married the former Dolores “Dolly” Curchoe.  Together they were blessed with five children and shared 51 years of marriage.  Dolly preceded him in death on October 26, 2000.  Mr. Wheeler was employed by Curchoe’s Food Market in Williamsport for many years.  In 1975 the Wheelers moved to Canton and purchased Bob & Dolly’s, IGA Grocery Market.  Later in 1978 he acquired Wheeler’s Restaurant and Lounge where he worked as owner and operator for over 20 years until his retirement.  He was a member of the Morris Run American Legion and held life memberships with the Canton V.F.W. and the Canton Volunteer Fire Company.  Mr. Wheeler loved his family, possessed many friends and especially enjoyed sharing times with them.  He was an avid fisherman, sports enthusiast and golfer.  Surviving are children and spouses; Robert Jr. and Glenda Wheeler, Cheryl and James Walter, Stanley Wheeler all of Williamsport, Darlene and “Mac” MacDonald, Canton and Ernest Wheeler, Montoursville; 10 grandchildren; Shawn Walter, Robert Wheeler, III, Erik Walter, Jennifer Hampton, Heidi Walter, Misti Mead, Richard Wheeler, Michael Fox, Booby Mead, Aaron Walter; great-grandchildren; Bradley and Emily Walter, Cain, Cierra and Justice Wheeler, Oden Burdick and Bailiee Fox; a brother, Charles Wheeler, Williamsport; special friends, Bob Stoeffer, Mary Breeze and Ann Machmer; several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.  In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by an infant son John Wheeler and infant granddaughter, Amber Rose Walter; brothers, Arthur and James Wheeler.  The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 Saturday, December 4th at Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Drive, Canton.  A memorial service and celebration of his life will be at 3 p.m. with Deacon William Graham officiating.  Military honors will be accorded by the Canton V.F.W. LYNN R. WHIPPLE of R.R. Wellsboro age 73, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, in his home.  Born November 19, 1930, on Whipple Hill, he was the son of Lewis and Esther Wright Whipple. Mr. Whipple was a veteran, serving with the US Air Force in the Korean War. On July 15, 1952, on Whipple Hill, he married the former Lois Gregg, who survives.  He was employed by Linofilm in Wellsboro for 23 years and Bendix in South Montrose, PA, for 10 years, retiring in 1992.  He was a faithful and active member of the Pine Creek Valley United Methodist Church in Gaines. He served as a Deputy Wildlife Conservation Officer for 29 years and as a Forest Fire Warden from 1950 until his death.  He served as a Justice of the Peace in Shippen Township for several years.  He was a founder of the reconstituted Pine Creek Sportsmen Club. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman.  Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Paxton (Kirsten) Whipple of Lawrenceville, PA; a daughter, Pamela (James) Vaiana of Bellefonte, PA; seven grandchildren, Lorelle Whipple, Lynette Whipple, Cody Whipple, Curtis Whipple, Maribeth Vaiana, Joseph Vaiana and Anthony Vaiana; two sisters, Elsie Clark and Carolyn Hazelton, both of Wellsboro; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Wesley, Arnold and Irving. WHITE –ANNA R. FULMER, 85, Dushore died November 18, 1999 at the Highlands, LaPorte.  Born in Dushore, January 1, 1914 she was a daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Gaughn White.  She attended local schools and married Harold E. Fulmer of Dushore on May 10, 1935.  Mrs. Fulmer and her husband farmed for several years before moving to Dushore.  She worked for many years at the former Sull-Craft Manufacturing Co., Dushore from which she retired.  She later helped many local families with child care services for several years.  Memberships include: St. Basil’s Catholic Church, Dushore and its Altar and Rosary Society.  Surviving are a grandson, Robert Fulmer Boyd, Canton; brother-in-law, Elmer Fulmer, Dushore; sisters-in-law, Veronica White, Buffalo, NY and Laura White, Dushore, several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her husband on July 11, 1959; her son, Robert L. Fulmer, June 8, 1972; sisters, Agnes Farrell and Mary Sweeney, Dushore; brothers, James White, Buffalo, John White and Francis “Nick” White, Dushore.  The funeral service was held November 22 from the P. WHITELEY –ZETA BURGESS KAST age 86 of Forksville RR died Saturday, April 8, 2000 in the Dar-Way Nursing Home.  She was born Aug. 26, 1913 in Elkland Township, Sullivan County a daughter of the late Roy and Fannie McCarty Whiteley.  Zeta was a scool teacher most of her life, she taught in the Hillsgrove and Bethel schools and later retired from the Loyalscok and LaPorte elementary schools.  She was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ of Elkland and played piano and was organist for more than 60 years.  Zeta was a former member of the Canton Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.  Zeta had been married to the late Roscoe Burgess of Elkland, and they raised two daughters.  She later married William Kast of Dushore who also preceded her in death.  She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Sondra Kaufhold of Lancaster, Pa. and Mr. and Mrs. Roy and Dawn Zimmerman of Forksville, Pa.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Michael, Terry and Christpopher Minnier of Lancaster, Pa., Christine, Tony and T. J. WIGGINS –KATHLEEN WIGGINS OSTRANDER, 73 of 107 ½ N. Elmer Ave., Sayre died Friday, May 10, 1991 at the Robert Packer Hospital.  Born March 24, 1918 in Catatonk, Tioga Co., N.Y. she was a daughter of the late Harry D. and Della Norton Wiggins.  She was employed at the Smith-Corona Corp. in Cortland, N.Y. for 17 years until her retirement.  Mrs. Ostrander was a member of the Waverly American Legion Auxiliary.  She is survived by two sons, Bud Ostrander and Park Snider both of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren; a twin sister, Katherine Schimmelsing of St. Petersburg, Fla. and two sisters, Agnes Morean of Endicott, N.Y. and Flora Lutz of Sayre.  She was preceded in death by a brother, John Wiggins of Owego in 1958.  Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, Towanda.  There will be no calling hours.  The family suggests donations may be made to the charity or organization of one’s choice in Mrs. Ostrander’s memory.  –Canton Independent Sentinel

PHYLLIS WILBER, 61 of the Highlands Nursing Home in LaPorte, Pa. formerly of the Canton, Pa. area went home to her Lord and Savior on Sunday morning, June 11, 2006 at the Towanda Memorial Hospital.  Phyllis Rose Wilber was born on April 21, 1945.  She was a daughter of the late Alfred and Myrtle (Kelley) Wilber.  The Lord guided Phyllis’ life and she was a devoted member of the Wheelerville Mennonite Church.  She also enjoyed times spent with family and her loving pet cats.  Surviving are a sister, Velma (Donald) Spencer of Wellsboro, Pa.; four brothers, Elwod (Barbara), Cecil, LeWayne (Marilan) and Gary Wilber all of Canton; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.  In addition to her parents, Ms. Wilber was predeceased by a brother, Lewis and an infant sister, Dorothy.  The family invites friends to call 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 14 at Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Drive, Canton.  The funeral service will follow with the Rev. WILCOX –MRS. JUNE M. TRUSEDALE, 84 of RR 3, Box 3426, Laceyville, Pa., formerly of Washington Street, Meshoppen, died on Tuesday evening, Aug. 3, 2004 at the Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Pa.  Born on Sugar Hill, Bradford County, on June 8, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Ephraim and Mildred Fenton Wilcox. Mrs. Truesdale was the wife of the late Raymond Truesdale, who died on Jan. 18. 1993.  Mrs. Truesdale was a graduate of the Wyalusing High School, class of 1938. She later worked as a seamstress at clothing factories, retiring from Meshoppen Manufacturing in 1992, after being employed there for 23 years.  She was a member of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church, secretary of the W.S.C.S. for 35 years and a member of the Meshoppen Senior Citizens Club.  Surviving are a stepson and his wife, William and Carolyn Truesdale of Ft. Worth, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Nelda Truesdale of Ft. Worth; a brother, Fenton Wilcox of Towanda; four sisters, Betty Marbaker of Retta, Pa., Mary Shatinsky and long-time companion Pete Brozonis, with whom she lived, in Laceyville, Charlotte Anderson of Wyalusing and Lil Jayne of Laceyville; five grandchildren; and 21 nieces and nephews.  Besides her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a stepson, Wyoming County Sheriff Robert Truesdale; a sister, Ruth Startzel; and four brothers, Oliver Wilcox, Ephraim Wilcox, Louis Wilcox and Fayette Wilcox.  Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 7, at the Meshoppen United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sandra L. Yerton of the church and the Rev. LOUIS WILLIAMS ‘LOU’ WILCOX, 76 highly regarded Towanda resident of 10 Ward Ave., Towanda died Wednesday morning, Oct 18, 2000 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda.  Born Oct. 13, 1924 at Sugar Run he was a son of the late Ephraim and Mildred Fenton Wilcox.  Louis was a graduate of Wyalusing Area High School in June of 1943.  He then worked on a farm until January of 1944, when he entered the U.S. Navy during World War II.  He served on the U.S.S. Ticonderoga (CV14) and was later stationed at Pearl Harbor.  Following his honorable discharge from the Navy in June of 1946 he returned home to become employed by the Commonwealth Telephone Co.  On Jan. 4, 1947 he married the former Evalee Walters of Stevensville.  Louis was employed by the Commonwealth Telephone Co. for 43 years until his retirement in June of 1989 and in recognition of his community service, Lou received the company’s first President’s Award.  Lou dedicated his life to serving his community.  In early years he served as a Cub Scout leader and as manager of a Little League Team in Towanda.  Louis was an active member of the Towanda First United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees and head usher and assisted in various groups and meal preparation activities within his church.  He was a past president and served as a driver for the Towanda Ambulance Association for 38 years, receiving the Outstanding Driver Award in 1987 for his years of dedication.  He was a lifetime member of Franklin Steam Engine Co. No. 1, Towanda, lifetime member and past commander of Towanda American Legion Post No. 42, past president and treasurer of Towanda American Legion Post’s World War II Last Man’s Club and was a lifetime member and past commander of Beirne-Webster V.F.W. Post 1568, Towanda.  Lou served as exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 2191, Towanda for two terms and was the recipient of the Elk of the Year Award for 1983-84.  He currently served as membership chairperson for the AARP and enjoyed bowling with his friends.  Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Evalee at home; his children, Barb Bouse and her friend, Joseph Zak of Towanda, James Wilcox and his wife, Deborah Wilcox of Towanda, Rebecca Wilcox of Towanda, Jeffrey Wilcox and his wife, Dorothy Wilcox of Towanda, Joseph Wilcox and his wife, Betty Jean Wilcox of Wysox and Robert “Bob” Wilcox of Indiana, Pa.; nine grandchildren, Karen Bouse and Greg, Gary, Jenny, Kimberly, Michael, Joleen, Chad and Brittney Wilcox; three great-grandchildren; Conner, Micah and Jordan Wilcox; a brother, Fenton Wilcox; five sisters, June Trusedale of Meshoppen, Mary Shatinsky of Laceyville, Charlotte Anderson of Wyalusing, Betty Marbaker of Lawton and Lillian Jayne of Lawton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Startzel and three brothers, Al, Oliver and Fayette Wilcox.  The family will receive friends on Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. t6o 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral home, 217 York Ave., Towanda.  Towanda Elks Lodge No. 2191 will hold a memorial service Friday evening at 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home.  The funeral and committal service will be held Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. WILHELM –GERTRUDE M. UPDEGRAFF, 85, formerly of Williamsport died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003 at Valley View Nursing Center.  She was born in Northumberland, Jan. 31, 1918 a daughter of Daniel and Marybell Hines Wilhelm.  She was a nurse’s aide at the Williamsport and Divine Providence hospitals.  She also donated much of her time to the Salvation Army.  She enjoyed crocheting and reading.  Her husband Grover predeceased her.  Her survivors include 11 children, 26 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.  Gertrude’s “Life Celebration” will begin with a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Maneval Funeral Home, “A Life Celebration Home,” 500 W. ROBERT S. WILLIAMMEE SR., 82, Gainesville, FL died Feb. 7, 1990 at his home.  Mr. Williammee was born April 28, 1907 a son of John T. and Lulu Williammee in Hoytville, Tioga County, PA.  He was a graduate of Yeagertown High School and Millersville State College and taught school in Stoney Fork, Steelton and Mount Joy, PA.  He was a member of the Danville Moose Club and the Steelton Episcopal Church.  Surviving are his wife, Helen; a son, Robert Jr., Steelton; a daughter, Steva Reese, Gainesville, FL; two brothers, John T., Canton and G. CURTIS C. WILLIAMS – On the morning of February 11, 2001; a tragic accident took the life of Curtis Carlyle Williams, 46 as he was returning to his home in Canton Borough.  Born December 2, 1954 he was the son of the late Carlyle Williams and Leora (Ellis) Williams Wilcox.  He was a graduate of Canton High School class of 1972 and the Philco-Ford Institute in Philadelphia.  Although life was not always kind to him, he somehow managed to circumvent his bad breaks and move forward with his head held high.  From 1974 to 1978 he served his country most honorably and diligently in the United States Army Special Forces as a black Beret Ranger in Airborne achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.  He served in the DMZ in Korea and earned the parachute badge, Ranger Tati, Expert Infantryman Badge, Senior Parachute Badge, Rifle Expert and Grenade Launcher Marksman medals.  In civilian life Mr. Williams was never lacking when it came to work.  He had been employed as a roofer and as a Quality Control inspector for Ward Manufacturing.  In the 1980s he worked as an off shore oil rigger in the Gulf of Mexico.  In more recent years he was employed by Canton Manufacturing as a mould setter.  As a sideline he and his wife, Donna operated a carpentry business called Lake Hill Restoration.  He was a member of American Legion Post #167 of Morris Run.  Mr. Williams was a big hearted man with a desire to help others.  He had no need for hobbies his recreation and relaxation came from keeping busy with some form of work.  His greatest joy in life was to be with his beloved grandchildren.  Surviving are his wife, the former Donna Blymiller at home; mother and step-father, Leora and Ralph Wilcox, Canton; sons, Tommy “T.J.” Williams, and his friend, Lori, Titusville, Steve (Heidi) Williams, Mt. DEAN E. WILLIAMS, 81 a lifetime resident of Shunk, PA died unexpectedly at his home October 30, 1999.  Born February 27, 1918 in Shunk he was one of 11 children born to the late Otis and Ellen Shadduck Williams.  In earlier years, he attended the Shunk School and worked on his father’s dairy farm in Shunk (Fox Twp.).  Mr. Williams would later acquire his family’s farm, making him the third generation to see to its daily operations until his retirement in 1983.  Throughout life he was no stranger to hard work.  He possessed an earthly quality that he utilized during his many years of farming.  Mr. Williams was also an avid horseman and enjoyed raising horses and attending pulls and auctions.  Memberships included the Shunk United Methodist Church and the Endless Winds Volunteer Firemen’s Company.  Surviving are four daughters and a son-in-law, Flenia Williams, Shunk, Ella Ruth Howee, Montoursville, Alyse Porter, Jupiter, FL and Louise and Donald Isaacs, Serf City, NC; three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Dean and Leesa Kay Williams, Hillsgrove, PA, Otis and Sharon Williams, Shunk and Kevin and Julie Williams, Wake Forest, NC; a sister, Velma Becker, Williamsport; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Elvina Snell Williams, June 28, 19998 and by his siblings, Myrtle Knerr, Ester Little, Minnie Baumunk, Geraldine Osman, Claude, Lynn, Donald, Fran and an infant sister, Mildred Williams.  The funeral was held November 2 at the Shunk United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Eby and Rev. DYLAN MICHAEL WILLIAMS, infant son of Jeanie (Fennell) Williams died very unexpectedly at his home on Troy Street in Canton March 7, 2002.  He was born November 22, 2001 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira, NY.  In addition to his loving mother, Jeanie, he is survived by a brother, Jesse Williams at home; special friend, Michael Scott Lehman, Canton; grandparents, Thomas Fennell, East Smithfield and Juanita Fennell, Canton; great-grandfather, George Bulkley, Canton; aunts, Jen Lehman, Julia and April Fennell all of Canton; uncle, Nicholas Fennell, Canton and many dear friends.  The memorial service was held March 9, 2002 at the Pepper Funeral Home, Canton with the Rev. RONALD LEE WILLIS SR., 59, Canton, formerly a resident of Cedar Ridge Apartments died unexpectedly April 7, 1997 at the Bradford county Manor following a period of declining health.  Born March 23, 1938 in Rochester, NY he was the son of the late Roy E. and Jessie Burham Willis.  He was a truck driver most of his life until his retirement in the early 1990s when a disability no longer permitted him to continue.  Mr. Willis enjoyed riding motorcycles and working on engines.  In earlier years he was an avid hunter.  Surviving are his wife, Rosemarie Derrig Willis at home; five children and their spouses, Patricia Arif, San Francisco, CA, Ronald Jr. and Michele Willis, Ephrata, PA, Joseph Derrig, Williamsport, Kimberley and Daniel Zimmer, San Diego, CA, Rodney Willis at home; five grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Willis, Tampa, FL; an uncle, Harry “Skip” Willis of Webster, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins.  A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 12, 1997 at the Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Drive, Canton with the Rev. HAROLD L. WISE –HAZEL E. BASTIAN, 96 of Cogan Station RR2 died Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at Sycamore Manor following a brief illness.  Her husband, Jacob Harold Bastian died Nov. 26, 1980.  Hazel was a homemaker and attended the First Lutheran Church in Mifflinburg.  Her greatest passion was spending time with her family and she enjoyed listening to classical music and reading poetry.  Born July 23, 1906 in Cogan House Twp., she was a daughter of Truman L. and Jennie E. Griswold Wise.  Surviving are a son, David C. of Grand Rapids, Mich.; daughters, Diana Getz of Mifflinburg and Sandra E. Losieniecki of this city; sister, Helen Campbell of Marietta, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  A daughter, Dolores Millard preceded her in death in 1992.  Nine brothers and sisters also predeceased her.  A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Salladasburg Cemetery, Salladasburg RR2 with the Rev. EARL E. WOOTTEN –Founder of Canton Independent Sentinel Dies in Montrose.  Earl E. Wootton, 60 of Montrose suffered a heart attack at his home at 30 Lake Avenue, Monday afternoon, Nov. 4, 1974 and succumbed the same evening in Medical Arts Hospital, Montrose.  He was managing editor and publisher of the Montrose Independent and the Susquehanna County Press, two Susquehanna County newspapers published by the Montrose Publishing Company.  He was also founder of the Canton Independent in 1941 and shortly thereafter, The Canton Independent-Sentinel following the purchase of the Canton Sentinel from the Newells.  Mr. Wootton changed the newspaper in Canton from a handset newspaper to a complete machine typesetting plant.  His wife, the late Alburta Andrea Wooten died on August 19, 1974. A sister, Mrs. Ida Perkins, also preceded him in passing on March 25, 1974.  A younger brother, Ray Wootton died in January, 1946.  In April 1923, Mr. Wooton began learning the printer’s trade in the mechanical department of the Montrose Democrat, where he worked as a printer for three years.  When the Montrose Democrat and the Independent Republican consolidated in 1926, he became advertising manager for the newly named newspaper, the Montrose Independent.  He had been a part of the Montrose Independent since its inception.  At this time he also became salesman for all types of commercial printing including the manufacturer of calendars for the Montrose publishing firm.  At this time he also became salesman for all types of commercial printing including the manufacturer of calendars for the Montrose publishing firm.  In 1950 he bought out the entire interests in the Montrose Publishing Co. In 1963 he obtained the Susquehanna evening Transcript and The Weekly Ledger and merged the two with the Susquehanna Press to fill the need of the people of the north-eastern section of the county for a newspaper.  His business acumen developed the newspapers into the outstanding newspapers in northeastern Pennsylvania.  Two of his associates, Henry W. Felton, editor of the Montrose Independent and William A. Aiken, a former editor, who worked with Mrs. Wootton for 40 years and 50 years, respectively, wrote glowing tributes which appeared in last week’s edition of the Montrose newspaper.  He is survived by two sons, Earle Andre Wooton at home, and a member of the Montrose Publishing Company and Robert Ray Wootton, currently attending Oxford University in England.  He was a director of the County National Bank and a member of Warren Lodge, F&AM and a member of the Montrose Methodist Church.  Funeral and committal services were held Friday, November 8 at the Robert A. Bartron Funeral home, Montrose with the Rev. George C. Kramer, Jr. and Henry W. WRIGHT –BESSIE W. BROWN of Forksville Rd. died on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1996 at the Dar-Way Nursing Home at the age of 91.  Bessie was born in Forksville, Pa. on March 25, 1905 the daughter of the late Edward B. and Nettie Glidewell Wright.  She was a graduate of the Estella High School and attended the Houghton College of Lima, N.Y. and later married Warren D. Brown of Forksville who preceded her in death in 1943.  An active member of her church, the Millview Wesleyan, Bessie taught Sunday school and belonged to the Quilting Society.  She was a community volunteer for many years.  She helped at the Sullivan County Fair, the Bow Hunters Festival, the Forksville and Elkland Cemetery Association and also spent years helping with the Molyneaux Genealogy.  Mrs. Brown is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lorene Rinker of Montoursville, Pa.; three sons, Dudley Brown of Shunk, John Brown of Forksville and Stanley Brown also of Forksville; 25 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14 in the Millview Wesleyan Church at 10 a.m. with Rev. WYLIE –ELIZABETH MACALLUM WYLIE MOST, 79 of 13 Little St., Canton died Friday, Aug. 7, 1992 at her home.  Born Dec. 20, 1912 in Trenton, N.J. she was the daughter of James and Isabelle King Wylie.  Mrs. Most was a graduate from Trenton High School and the School of Nursing Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1934.  On Sept. 19, 1936 she married William R. H. Most who predeceased her on Nov. 20, 1985.  Together with her husband, they owned and operated the Most Rexall Drug Store in Canton from 1941 to 1976.  Mrs. Most was employed for many years as a school nurse by the Canton Area School District.  She was a member and ordained Elder of the Canton Ecumenical Parish.  Mrs. Most was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America and was the first woman awarded the Silver Beaver award by the Sullivan Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  She was a Past Worthy Matron for the Canton Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.  For over 40 years she served as chairwoman for the Canton Area American Red Cross Bloodmobile.  She also served in the Bradford County Cancer Society and was a lifetime member of the Village Improvement Association.  Mrs. Most belonged to numerous other local and charitable community organizations.  Surviving are two sons, William J. (PhD) of Gillette, N.J. and Robert K. (PhD) of Mansfield; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Katherine Smith of Albequrque, N.M., numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Benjamin A. (PhD) on Nov. 10, 1986.  The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9, 1992 at the Canton Ecumenical Parish, Center Street with the Rev. Ronald Beistline and Rev. David B. YAGGIE –LILLIAN CHRISTINA MORGAN, 69, Okeechobee died July 11, 2002 at her residence.  She was born on October 18, 1932 in Jersey Shore, PA.  Mrs. Morgan had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1976.  Surviving include her loving husband of 51 years, Audley M. YOUMANS –ARLENE YOUMANS WEBSTER age 70 of 699 Haben Blvd. #209 Palmetto, FL died on Monday May 26, 2003 in the Manatee Memorial Hospital in Manatee County, FL following a brief illness.  Mrs. Webster was born November 10, 1932 in Corning, NY the daughter of the late Calvin and Florence Youmans.  She was pre-deceased by her husband Frederick Webster in 1977; her son Freddie Webster in 1974; brothers: Dick Youmans in 1988 and Calvin Youmans in 1995. Arlene is survived by her son: John A. ROBERT E. YOUNG, 73 of Franklin Avenue, Tunkhannock died at Memorial Hospital, Towanda on Friday, Jan. 5, 1996.  He was born in Wyalusing on Jan. 25, 1922, son of the late Loren and Ethel Vought Young.  He was a graduate of Wyalusing High School class of 1939, Danville School of Nursing class of 1944 and received a B.S. in Education from Temple University in 1971.  During his professional career, he taught and worked several administrative areas at Temple University and several other hospitals in the Philadelphia area retiring from Parkview Hospital in Philadelphia in 1990.  He attended the Osterhout Bible Church in Tunkhannock.  He is survived by his wife of 21 years, the former Elizabeth Moses and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral and committal services will be held from the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock on Sunday at 1 p.m. with Victor W. Decker, pastor of the Osterhout Bible Church officiating.  Interment will be in Brackney Cemetery, Brackney.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from noon until the time of the service.  –Towanda Daily Review

WILLIAM PACKARD YOUNG, 78 died peacefully Jan. 12, 2007, at his home in Naples, Fla.  Born in Towanda, Pa., to Kenneth and Adeline Young, he graduated from Towanda High School and Mansfield University, where he was very active in sports.  He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. After beginning his career in elementary and special education, he retired as assistant superintendent of schools in Arlington County, Va., where he pioneered nationally recognized programs in continuing and career education.  Mr. Young was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman who enjoyed his membership at South Mountain Hunting Club.  He is survived by: Marilyn Daron Young, his wife of 54 years; his son, Daron; his daughter-in-law, Heather; his granddaughters, Ellie and Claire; his brother, Dr. Jerome K. Young; his sisters, Olive Williams, Gwen Bretcher and Patricia Goodwin; his brother-in-law, Richard Goodwin; his brother-in-law, Walter S. YUCAS –MRS. HELEN M. BULLOCK age 80 of RR 3, Box 76A, Meshoppen, Pa. (Auburn Center) and Cresent Lake died at her home Saturday evening, Jan. 11, 1997 after a long illness.  Born on June 25, 1916 in Duryea, Pa. she was the daughter of the late Simon and Tillie Kristunas Yucas.  She graduated from Duryea High School in 1933.  In 1943 she married Gerald E. Bullock and moved to Susquehanna County to the family farm.  Before retiring in 1982, she worked for Allied Signal (Bendix Corp.) in South Montrose for more than 30 years.  She was a member of St. Joachim –St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Churches for 54 years and its Altar and Rosary Society.  She was also a member of the Tyler Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald E. Bullock in 1987; a son, Stanley J. Bullock in 1976 and a brother, John Yucas in 1973.  Surviving are a son, Charles R. Bullock with whom she resided for the last 13 years of Meshoppen; two daughters, Mrs. John (Mary Ann) Bonavita and Mrs. Myron (Geraldine) Mokris, both of Meshoppen; nine grandchildren, John, Cherie, Cindy, Patti, Christopher, Lori and Stanley Bonavita and Steven and Gary Mokris, all of Meshoppen; one great-grandson, Alex Bonavita of Meshoppen; brothers, Joseph and Edward Yucas, both of Duryea; sisters, Beatrice Yucas of Duryea, Mrs. Edward (Eleanor) Bonini of Torrington, Conn., Mrs. Joseph (Marie) Rompala of Meshoppen and Mrs. Edward (Alice) Kutsko of New Bern, N.C.; aunts, Helen and Evelyn Kristunas of Tunkhannock and Nellie Kovelesky of Bloomfield, Conn. and several nieces and nephews.  The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997 at 10 a.m. at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Meshoppen with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at the St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church in Auburn with the Rev. ?. –MRS. FLORA KNIGHT –Services for Mrs. Flora L. Knight, 71 of 22 Tioga Street Canton were held Aug. 23, 1967 at the Canton Church of Christ, the Rev. Duane Taylor and Roger Spencer officiating.  Interment is to be in Forest Grove Cemetery, Knoxsville, Tenn., where memorial services will be held.  Mrs. Knight died Aug. 21, 1967 at Troy Community Hospital.  She was the wife of the Rev. Ralph R. Knight of the Canton Church of Christ and the North Union Christian Church.  Mrs. Knight was born in Knoxsville and was a member of the Church of Christ, Canton.  Survivors include her husband; daughter, Mrs. John Sway of Weedsport, N.Y.; son, Ralph Edward of Salem, Va.; four grandchildren; sister, Madge Caldwell of Knoxsville; several nieces.  –Canton Independent Sentinel
