BENSON born “Dorthea” Marie Morrow, beloved daughter of John Andrew Morrow and Mildred Clara Eastabrook of Towanda, Bradford County, Pa. died at 9 p.m. Dec. 9, 1999, just 11 days away from her 84th birthday.  She had been living with her oldest son, Charles A. Benson and his wife, Barbara in Tucker, Ga. for the past several years, and most recently at the nearby Briawood Nursing Center.  Dorothea, or Dot as her many friends knew her, had been married to Willis O. Benson, also of Pennsylvania and will join him in the Old Mother Church Cemetery in Robbinsville, N.C. where they resided at the time of his death in 1984.  Dot led an adventurous life and with her husband and sons, lived through several hurricanes, boat wrecks and the Alaskan earthquake and tidal wave.  She traveled extensively in the United States, Canada and Europe and made stops in the Bahamas, Australia, New Zealand and Russia –visiting 25 countries during her long life.  Over the years she set up house in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Germany, Florida, Alaska, Arizona, North Carolina and Georgia.  Dot earned a teaching degree in music and English at Mansfield College, Mansfield, Pa. and years later a degree in librarianship at the University of Puget Sound in Washington State.  She was beloved by her students and was especially fond of those at Lyman High School in Casselberry, Fla. and Kodiak High School, Kodiak, Alaska.  Among her other life’s accomplishments, she was a security guard at the Navy’s Rest and Recuperation Facility at Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pa. during World War II, a member of the famed Bach Choir near Winter Park, Fla., president of the Kodiak, Alaska Chapter and first Alaskan vice president-elect of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, Western District director of the Friends of the Library of North Carolina and president of the United Methodist’s Association, Robbinsville, N.C.  She was active in women’s clubs and churches wherever she lived and shared her beautiful soprano voice in many church choirs.  In recent years she was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Tucker, Ga., where she did volunteer work at the church library.  She also helped out at the Tucker Branch Library and held story hours in the local Tucker schools.  Perhaps most importantly Dot will be remembered for her significant role in helping to raise funds for the Robbinsville Public Library and for the many outstanding musical productions and school plays she warmly and energetically directed.  Her living kindness, faithfulness, forgiving nature and zest for life made her easy to love and very hard to forget.  She never met a person whom she couldn’t befriend and she will be extremely missed by all who knew and lover her.  Dot is survived by her sons, Charles and Bill and their wives, Barbara and Sabine; sister, Mary Helen Waverka; grandchildren, Michelle and Leslie Benson, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Friends of the family are invited to a viewing on Sunday evening, Dec. 12 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Lowndes and McLane Funeral Home, 4320 Cowan Road, Tucker, GA.  A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13.  Interment will be in North Carolina and there will be a short graveside service at the Old Mother Church Cemetery in Robbinsville, N.C. at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 13 followed by an informal reception at the Robbinsville Methodist Church, Andrew Brown, pastor officiating.  –Towanda Daily Review
