BERNARD ASBELL, State College died February 1, 2001. From 1984 until his retirement in 1992 he was an associate Professor of English at Penn State. He is the author of 12 books and approximately 200 non-fiction articles for national publications. His books include Paterno By The Book, which he coauthored with Joe Paterno and When F.D.R. Died, a New York Times best seller. Surviving are his wife, Dr. Jean Brenchley, a professor of microbiology at Penn State and former Canton resident, his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Brenchley, also a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Shirley Brenchley all of Canton. –Canton Independent Sentinel
BAILEY –LOUISE B. WILLIAMS, 87 of 130 Knight’s drive, Bloomsburg, Pa. died at her home on Friday, Dec. 20, 2002. She was in failing health for 10 years. She was born July 13, 1915 in Granville Township, the only child of the late Julius W. and Matie E. (Rockwell) Bailey. She was a 1933 graduate of Troy High School. She had resided in Bloomsburg since 1948 and formerly lived in Troy. She was a secretary in the Athletic Department of Bloomsburg University from September 1967 until retiring in December 1991. She was a member of the English Baptist Church, Troy. She also belonged to the Bloomsburg Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Espy Garden Club. She was a member and past matron of Bloomsburg Chapter 279, Order of Eastern Star, The Bloomsburg Past Matron’s Association and the White Shrine of Jerusalem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert R. Williams on April 2, 1967. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Henry W. (Linda W.) Frew and Jan W. Hemma, both of Danville and four grandchildren. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 24 at 11 a.m. in the Dean W. Kriner Inc. Funeral Home, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg with the Rev. Allen F. BALDWIN –HARRIETT MARIE (CUNNINGHAM) BREWER, loving wife, mother and grandmother age 82 of Troy, PA, died at home on Friday, July 2, 2004 after a lengthy illness. Harriett is survived by her husband, Harland F. Brewer; children, Jackie (Harlan) Press of Millerton, PA, Denny (Bertha) Cunningham of Mainesburg, PA, Mary Jane (Timothy) Wade of Horseheads, NY, Nancy Baldwin Cunningham of Saratoga Springs, NY, Sandy (Ronald) Henry of Horseheads, NY; brother, Charles (Barbara) Baldwin of Troy, PA; grandchildren, Laura Kinney, Michael Press, David Cunningham, Christine Frank, Timothy Wade Jr., Judy Kuhl, Michelle Jamison, Eric Henry, Brandon De Nunzio and Christopher De Nunzio. She was predeceased by her parents, the late Howard Martin and Achsah Granger Baldwin; and her brother, Donald Baldwin. Harriett was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a kind-hearted friend to everyone and touched many people throughout her life. Following her wishes, there will be no calling hours and a private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. ELWOOD L. BLAIR, 74 of Trout Run HC 64 died Monday Sept. 18, 1995 after being stricken at home. He and his wife, the former Ruth E. Foulkrod observed their 46th wedding anniversary Aug. 20. He retired in 1983 from the Montoursville Area School District as a business teacher. He served on the board of directors of Barbours Cemetery Association and was a member of the Trout Run Senior Citizens and Cascade Township Planning Commission. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Wallis Run United Methodist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher and treasurer. Born Dec. 20, 1921 in Cascade Township, he was a son of J. Budd and Rosa Smith Blair. Surviving, besides his wife are; three sons, Wayne E. of East Smithfield, Gary Budd of Montoursville and Randy L. of Bowie, Md.; two brothers, Theron and R. Doyle, both of trout Run; a sister, Doris Smith of South Williamsport and four grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the church, Cascade Township with the Rev. Larry E. Siikanen, his pastor and the Rev. Elwood L. Hollopeter, retired, his former pastor officiating. Burial will be in Barbours Cemetery. BOLT –NELLIE E. PHILLIPS, 83 [SRGP 78881] of Williamsport died Monday, March 19, 2001 in Williamsport Hospital. She was born November 7, 1917 in Fallbrook, PA the daughter of Llewellan and Agnes Stromovitch Bolt. She was a graduate of Canton High School, class of 1935 and was a member of the Ralston United Methodist Church. Surviving are daughters, Judy Minthorn, Ralston and Barbara Miller, Linden, sons, John and James Frey, both of Canton; a step-son, Arthur Phillips, Marshall, TX; and a grand-daughter, Tina Vaughn, with whom she lived; as well as numerous other grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur “Bill” Phillips, who died in 1987, two infant sons, one step-son, and one step-daughter; two brothers and a sister. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23 at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond Street, Williamsport, PA with her son-in-law, Darren Minthorn, a lay minister, officiating. –Canton Independent Sentinel
REGINA M. BOUDEMAN age 55 of South Williamsport, Pa. died on Thursday, May 8, 2003. She was born on Sept. 30, 1947 in Sullivan County, Pa. a daughter of the late Kermit A. and Rose M. Calaman Boudeman. Regina was a graduate of East Lycoming High School. Until 1993 she was employed by the Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown, Pa. as a nurses aide, giving 22 ½ years of service. Regina enjoyed time spent knitting and crocheting. She leaves surviving two sisters, Ferna Fetterman of Jonestown, Pa. and Mary Jane Johnson of Birmingham, Ala. and several aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at 10 a.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore with the Rev. James Bechtel, pastor of the Rock Run Church of Muncy Valley, Pa. officiating. Interment will follow in Twin Hills Memorial Park in Montoursville. NED E. BOVIER, 88 of RO-KI Blvd., Nichols died peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 1991 at the Tioga Nursing Facility, Waverly following an illness. He was born on Nov. 14, 1902 in Cresson, Pa., a son of Bernard and Anna Bouch Bovier. He had served in the U.S. Army in Hawaii from 1927 to 1931 and on Jan. 1, 1932 he married the former Florence Leasure in Harpursville, N.Y. In his early years he was a chef with the Delaware and LeHigh Railroad and later worked 26 years as a trainman for the LeHigh Valley Railroad. He attended the United Methodist Church of Nichols and was a life member of Westbrook Masonic Lodge No. 333 F&AM, Nichols, member and past president of the Nichols RO-KI Club; member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Waverly and a charter member of the Honolulu, Hawaii, Moose. He was also a member of the BPOE of Sayre and a member of the United Transportation Union Local No. 810 Sayre. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Florence, he is survived by his two brothers, Don Bovier of Towanda and Coy F. Bovier of Augusta, Ga.; a sister, Cleo Halling of Augusta, Ga.; a half-sister, Clara Wickham of Athens and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Dean Bovier. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 21 at 11 a.m. from the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 82 Main St., Nichols with Rev. John Easton, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Nichols officiating. Interment will be in the Nichols Cemetery. THOMAS W. BOVIER, 61, Boca Raton, FL and formerly of Bradford County died March 12, 2003. Born January 10, 1942 he was the son of Donald Bovier and stepson of Marshall Cole, both formerly of Troy. He was a nephew of the late Coy Bovier. Surviving are his children, Gregory, Jeffery, Kevin and Christina, all of Pittsburgh, PA; seven grandchildren; brothers and a sister, Raymond, Ruth Ann, Gary, Rick, Garth and Brenda; aunt, Eudora Bovier, Big Pond, PA and Augusta, GA. Memorial services were held on March 22 at Allegheny Co. Memorial Park, Pittsburgh, PA.
BRADFORD –ALICE B. JACOBS, 82 [SRGP 27930] of Lansdale, PA die Feb. 25, 1991 in North Penn Hospital, Lansdale. She was born in Forksville a daughter of Dr. Carl M. and Celia Leiby Bradford. She was a descendant of the first colonial governor, William Bradford of the Plymouth Colony and was a member of the Society of Mayflower descendants. Mrs. Jacobs was a graduate of Canton High School and attended Wesleyan College and graduated at the tom of her class at Hahnemann Nursing School in Philadelphia in 1930. Mrs. Jacobs assisted her husband in his practice for many years. After their marriage in 1930 they co-founded a maternity hospital in Lansdale. They lived in the hospital and she cared for patients, planned and cooked meals and served them. After World War II the hospital became Lansdale Clinic and later part of the Lansdale Medical Group. She was active in community affairs including the Auxiliary of North Penn Hospital. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Lansdale, the Eastern Montgomery Council of Republican Women, the Friends of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, the DAR and Winterthur Guild. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James (Marilyn) B. Minter of Cody, WY and Mrs. David (Sarah) T. Bryne of Ambler, PA, six grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Paul Bradford of Lansdale. DR. PAUL L. BRADFORD, 84, Lansdale died Thursday morning July 25, 1996 in North Penn Hospital, Hatfield Township. He was the husband of Jane (Snyder) Bradford. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in April. Born in Forksville he was a son of the late Dr. Carl M. and Celia E. (Leiby) Bradford. His family moved to Canton when he was a youth. He graduated from Canton High School in 1929 and was a 1933 graduate of Penn State University. He received his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in 1937 completing his residency in 1938. He was the third generation of his family to graduate from Hahnemann. Dr. Bradford began practicing medicine in Oxford from 1938 to 1942. He entered the US Navy in 1942 to serve during World War II. He also served in the US Navy Reserve, retiring in 1972 with the rank of commander. He moved to Lansdale in 1946 to join his brother-in-law, the late John B. Jacobs and Dr. David Northrup to gin a group practice, the former Lansdale Clinic, now the Lansdale Medical Group. He retired in 1987 after 50 years of practice. The medical group recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. One of its patients was the late Florence Knapp who lived to the age of 114. Dr. Bradford was a member of the Lansdale United Methodist Church. He was a member and past president of the Montgomery County Medical Society and belonged to the American Medical Association. He was a life member of the Retired Officer Association, the Fleet Reserve Association, the Penn State Alumni Association and Fifty Year Club of American Medicine. He was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants and Gov. William Bradford Compact Descendants Society and an honorary board member of the North Penn Valley Boys and Girls Club. He enjoyed playing his tuba with the Doc Band which consisted of local doctors. Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters; Brenda L. Gerhart and her husband Samuel of Port Allegheny, Jane A. Gilbert and her husband, Sheridan of Lansdale and S. Paula Godshall and her husband, Jeffrey of Albrightsville; a stepdaughter, Shirley D. Eastman and her husband, the Rev. John Eastman of Port Charlotte, FL; a stepson, Charles S. Gouak and his wife, Sonia of Golden, CO; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorcas A. (Bitler) Bradford, who died in 1969; a sister, Alice B. Jacobs and a brother, Arthur D. Bradford. Services were held July 29, 1996 in the Huff and Laker Funeral Home, Lansdale. Entombment was in Tower Columbarium, Whitemarsh Memorial Park. The family prefers that contributions be made to a charity of one’s choice. –Canton Independent Sentinel
DEAN R. BRENCHLEY, 73 of Forksville RD died March 7, 1985. He was born Nov. 7, 1911 at Masten, the son of Elsie Brown and Jesse Brenchley. While he spent his early years in this area, he moved to Redman, Oregon when he was 17. He returned to Sullivan County in 1951 and married Edna Bedford on May 20, 1951. He was a lumberman until he retired. A member of the Estella United Methodist Church he taught Sunday school for many years. Surviving are his wife; a brother, Glen of Tully, NY; several nieces and nephews. Four brothers preceded him in death, Howard, Earl, Roscoe and Carl as did a sister, Ada. Funeral services were held March 13 at the Estella United Methodist Church with Rev. William Carson officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, Forksville RD. JAMES EDWIN BRISTOL SR., 83 died October 4, 2003. He was born September 30, 1920 the oldest of eight children of Merle and Susan Bristol of Armenia Mountain near Troy, PA. He served in the U.S. Army and then after formation, the U.S. Air Force for 22 years in both world War II and the Korean War, receiving several medals. After retirement he served in the Civil Service. Mr. Bristol was actively involved in the American Legion, served as a Scout Leader and was an active member of the AARP. He attended Grace Baptist Church in Dill City, Oklahoma. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Ruth of Melbourne, FL; their children, Sharon, Dill City, OK; James also of Oklahoma; Dale and Karen, both of Denver, CO; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Verne, Eatonville, WA; Madeline Sjoblom, Troy, Charles Francis, Granville Summit; Donald, Highland, CA. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Robert and Harvey; a sister, Eleanor and a daughter, Belinda Joyce. Services were held at the Grace Baptist Church in Dill City, OK on October 8th. BROWN –AGNES B. BROWN, 81 – On the afternoon of Sunday July 9, 2000 Agnes Belle Brown a life long resident of Fox Township, Sullivan County, Pa. died quietly at her home after a lengthy and brave battle with cancer. She had just celebrated her 81st birthday the previous day. Born on her parent’s Fox Township farm on July 8, 1919 she was one of eight children in the family of Lester and Elnora (Caseman) Brown. As a child Agnes attended the local one room school house, where she met her future husband, Ellis Brown. It was a romance that blossomed and endured for many years. Shortly after Agnes graduated from Estella High School and on the day of her 19th birthday, she and Ellis were united in holy matrimony. The Browns settled into their new life on a farm just outside of the village of Piatt. Together they raised four sons and a daughter. Agnes was a charter member of the Endless Winds Fire Co. She enjoyed crocheting, raising chickens and caring for the wild birds. Most of all she was devoted to her family and they were by her side when she was called to her heavenly home. Agnes is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ellis Brown at home; sons, Roland and Neda Brown of Shunk, Harry and Dianna Brown of Forksville RR 1, Glenn Brown and friend Ina Capwell of Sugar Run, Jerrod and Marilyn Brown of Forksville RR 1; daughter, Ethel and Albert Krise of Leroy; sisters, Josephine and Kenneth Fitzwater of Canton and Myrtle and Harmon Morgan of Gillett; sisters-in-law, Wilma Brown of Lakeside, Calif. and Janet Brown of Shunk, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by brothers, Roy, Paul and Jim; sisters, Verna and Velma and a granddaughter, Kim. Funeral services will be conducted from the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, 40 N. Center St., Canton on Thursday, July 13 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Herbert Eby officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment will follow in the Brown Cemetery, Shunk, Pa. BROWN –BERTHA BROWN CHAPMAN, 79 El Cerrito, CA formerly of Canton died March 25, 1992 at the Silver Oak Manor in California. Mrs. Chapman was born October 3, 1912 the daughter of the late Elmer and Katie Hunsinger Brown. She was an honor graduate of Canton High School Class of 1931, Arnot-Ogden School for Nurses, reached advanced training at the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, was employed by Arnot-Ogden Hospital until 1941when she moved to California with her husband William Watrous. She was a public health nurse in California and was a school nurse in the Valley El Cerrito area until her retirement. While in California she married Bill Chapman. Surviving is one sister, Dean Brown Allen, St. George, Utah, formerly of Canton, five nieces and five nephews. Mrs. Chapman was predeceased by both husbands, a brother, Charles in 1932; five sisters, Ethel, Hazel, Winifred, Pauline and Mrs. Catherine Morgan. CARL J. BROWN, 75 of Canton RD 3 (Shunk) Pa. died Sunday December 21, 1980 at the Troy Community Hospital. Mr. Brown was born in Elkland Township, Sullivan County the son of Charles J. and Jenny Hess Brown. Carl was a member of the Endless Winds Fire Dept., Shunk, Pa. He is survived by three brothers, Walter of Leroy, Willard of Troy and Emery of E. Troy; four sisters, Mrs. Emery (Dorothy) Bryan of Barbours, Mrs. Edward (Lenora) Snyder of Canton, Mrs. Charles (Ada) Groover of Canton RD 2 and Mrs. Earl (Ida) Preston of Roaring Branch RD 1; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, 40 Center St., Canton with the Rev. Wilma Barker Hoose, pastor of the Grover St. John’s United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Brown Cemetery in Shunk, Pa. CHESTER L. BROWN, 68 of 57 Fassett St., Canton died April 17, 1980 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. Born August 18, 1911 he was the son of Charles and Jenny Hess Brown in Fox Township, Sullivan County. Mr. Brown was a life member of the Innes Hose Co., Canton and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. He was a retired employee of the Remington Rand Corp., Elmira, N.Y. He is survived by his wife, the former Agnes Morgan; one daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Eleane) Roher, Coudersport, Pa.; two sons, Richard Brown, Canton and Robert Brown of Montoursville, Pa.; 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Carl Brown of Shunk, Walter Brown of LeRoy, Willard Brown of Troy and Emery Brown of E. Troy; four sisters, Mrs. Emery (Dorothy) Bryan of Barbours, Pa., Mrs. Edward (Lenore) Snyder of Canton, Mrs. Charles (Ada) Groover of Canton RD 2 and Mrs. Earl (Ida) Preston of Roaring Branch RD 1 and several nieces, nephews and cousins. BROWN –DOROTHY J. BRYAN went home to be with her Lord and Savior on February 24, 2004. Born June 27, 1915 in Shunk, she was one of 12 children born to Charles and Jenny Hess Brown. She always had a very strong work ethic and as a child spent many hours with her mother, Jenny learning the tasks of canning, quilting and baking. She often told of traveling the back roads by horse and buggy while delivering dairy products and other homemade goods. She met the love of her life, Emory and they married in Montoursville on August 18, 1933. The young couple made their home in the Hoppestown area where she enjoyed being a talented homemaker and raising two sons. In August 2003 she and Emory were honored with a surprise 70th wedding anniversary party by their family and friends. In later years, she looked forward to going to the “Mountain” to spend time with her family where they would listen to her many stories of the “old days”. Mrs. Bryan possessed a strong Christian faith and was a member of the former Barbours United Methodist Church. She loved quilting, family, children and grandchildren. Surviving besides her husband are sons, Emerson R. (Gloria), Muncy; Ronald G. EARL RICHARD BROWN age 62 of Tampa, FL died June 12, 1993 at Town and Country Hospital, Florida. He was born in Bucks County, PA a son of Raymond and Mabel Brown, now deceased. Survivors include: his wife Linda Brown, Rochester, NY; children, Dean, Debbie, Denise and Derek Brown; several grandchildren, nephew and nieces; brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brown, Quakertown, PA, Mrs. Richard O. ELLIS L. BROWN – On December 3, 2003 Ellis L. Brown, 86 a lifelong resident of fox Township, died quietly at Memorial Hospital, Towanda. Born June 15, 1917 in the farming community of Piatt, he was the son of Hurley and Blanche (Weaver Brown. He attended the local one-room school, where he met his future wife, Agnes Belle Brown. It was a romance that blossomed and endured for many years and on July 8, 1938, they were united in marriage. They raised four sons and a daughter and shared 62 years until Agnes died in July of 2000. Mr. Brown was a man with a strong work ethic. He seemed to thrive on keeping busy. He was an active farmer for over 60 years, save for the time he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. During his career as a farmer, he actively pursued other enterprises and endeavors as well. He owned and operated Brown’s Store in Piatt for over 30 years, owned and operated a lumber mill, as well as assisting in the operations of various neighboring mills and was employed by PennDot for many years as a supervisor. His free moments, which may have been few and far between, were spent hunting and fishing. He was also a skilled wood worker and enjoyed making cradles to be given as gifts to the newborn members of his family. He also had a great sense of pride in his community and would help with improvements whenever he could. He was an honorary life member of the Endless Winds Fire Co. and graciously donated the land upon which it was constructed, was a good neighbor, a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. ELWOOD L. “TOM” BROWN – On the evening of October 9, 1999 Elwood Leon Brown, 84, Shunk, PA was called home by the Lord following a brief stay at Troy Community Hospital. Born in Shunk on January 29, 1915 he was the son of Hurley and Blanche (Bartlow) Brown. Throughout his life Mr. Brown was known to family and friends as “Tom”. By profession he was a lumberman and had been employed by the various saw mills in Sullivan County, the most recent being the former Bown Mill, which he left due to a disability. During the Great Depression he was a part of the Civilian Conservation Corps working in the vicinity of Sullivan, Bradford, Tioga and Lycoming Counties. Mr. Brown was a man with a great appreciation for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also known for his dry wit and his gift of spinning yarns about mischievous incidents of his youth. There was nothing that he enjoyed more than the good natured, wisecracking banter with family and friends and a pinch of Copenhagen. In the years which followed his declining health, he resided with his niece and her husband, Ethel and Albert Krise. Surviving are his brothers, Jesse Brown, Clarence “Tuff” (Neva) Brown, Ellis (Agnes) Brown, Aaron “John” (JoAnn) Brown, all of Shunk and Kenneth “Bill” (Marlene) Grown, Grover; sister, Leatha Lewis, Florida; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Brown in 1997. Funeral services were conducted October 12 at the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, Canton with the Rev. Herbert Eby officiating. EMERY L. ‘SONNY’ BROWN, 73 of Troy, Pa. died quietly at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre on Aug. 28, 1997 after a brief illness. Born in Shunk, Pa. on June 22, 1924 he was the son of Charles and Jennie (Hess) Brown. After completing the eighth grade, he worked on the family farm and at various lumber mills in the area. On May 5, 1951 he married the former Arlene Higley. Together they celebrated 46 years of holy matrimony. He continued his dual occupations of arming and working in the lumber mills while raising seven children. Sonny worked for 20 years with L.L. Baumunk in Shunk and 25 years with Cummings in Troy, retiring in 1990. The following year he also retired from farming. Sonny was a man who enjoyed the simple things in life, the great outdoors, hunting, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his dogs, which followed him everywhere. Besides his wife, Arlene, he is survived by sons; Earl and wife, Katie Brown of Troy, Pa., Randy Brown of St. Augustine, Fla., Dennis and wife, Angie Brown of Opelika, Ala.; daughters, Connie Parks and close friend, George Taylor of Columbia Cross Roads, Pa., Donna and her husband, Fred Wrisley of Lima, N.Y., Sandra and her husband, Daniel Hager of Troy, Pa., Kathy Bailey of St. Augustine, Fla. and Karen and husband, Doug Heller of Canton, Pa.; sisters, Ada and husband, Charles Groover of Ogdensburg, Pa., Ida and husband, Earl Preston of Roaring Branch, Pa. and Dorothy and husband, Emory Bryan of Hillsgrove, Pa.; he is also survived by23 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. BROWN –FLOSSIE JANE HOTELLING, 82, 34 Besemer Hill Road, Ithaca, N.Y. died Wednesday May 24, 1989 in the Tompkins Community Hospital, Ithaca, N.Y. She was born March 27, 1907 in Fox Township, Sullivan County a daughter of Aaron and Jane Wilcox Brown. She is survived by her husband Kenneth R. Hotelling, Sr. with whom she celebrated a 62nd wedding anniversary on Aug. 25, 1988. Also surviving are four sons; F. JAMES BROWN formerly of Shunk, Pa and Gillett, PA died Saturday March 16, 1996 at Lakeside, CA where he had lived for the past 30 years. Mr. Brown was born October 8, 1930 in Shunk. He was a field supervisor for 18 years at the Riverview Water District. JESSE E. ‘JUNK’ BROWN age 87 lifetime resident of the Shunk area died Friday evening, Jan. 7, 2000 at the Dar-Way Nursing Home in Estella. Born on Dec. 11, 1912 in Shunk he was a son of the late Hurley and Blanche Bartlow Brown. Jesse honorably served our country during World War II in the Army 692nd Tank Destroyer Battalion. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, Jesse came home to Sullivan County and was employed by various sawmills throughout the area until his retirement. He was a member of the Endless Winds Fire Co. in Shunk. “Junk” as he was affectionately referred to by his family and friends, was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and will be remembered for his wild-game recipes for cooking woodchuck and turtle soup. He is survived by four brothers and sisters-in-law; Ellis and Agnes Brown, Aaron and Joann Brown and Clarence (Tuff) and Neva Brown, all of Shunk and Kenneth and Marlene Brown of Grover; a sister, Letha Warren of Florida; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Brown and a brother, Elwood Brown. The funeral and committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 11, 2000 at the Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Drive, Canton with the Rev. JOHN L. BROWN, 53 of Shunk RD 1 died Wednesday Sept. 13, 1989 at his home following an extended illness. He worked at the former Schrader Bellows Co. in canton for 29 years. While employed there he was a machinist set-up man and inspector. Mr. Brown was a 1952 graduate of the former Estella High School. He was a member of the Shunk United Methodist Church. He was a charter member and past fire chief of Endless Winds Fire Co., Shunk and a member of the Canton Moose Lodge #429. He and his wife the former Margaret Warlock celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary March 17, 1989. Mr. Brown was born Nov. 18, 1935 at Shunk, Sullivan Co. the son of John Lewis and M. Anna Bartlow Brown. BROWN –NELLIE BROWN HEESS –On the morning of September 17, 2000, Nellie Brown Heess, 86 a life-long resident of Sullivan County died quietly after a brief stay at Memorial Hospital of Towanda. Born on her parent’s farm just outside of Shun June 6, 1914 she was a daughter of Liston and Anna Stull brown. Being a part of a farming family taught her the value of hard work and the satisfaction derived from a job well done. On November 7, 1930 at the age of 16 she was united in marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Kermit L. Heess. Together they raised a son and five daughters and operated a dairy farm. They shared nearly 40 years together until Kermit’s passing in 1970. She was well-known for her sewing and crocheting but most of all her cooking. She was always happiest when she had a large crowd to feed. For more years than most folks can remember she ran the dining hall at the Sullivan County Fair. No one ever had to ask her twice about volunteering for this cumbersome task. She served as cook for many years at Camp Brule Scout Reservation and worked as a cook for 15 years at Our House Restaurant south of Canton. Mrs. Heess was a woman of faith, anchored to her Christian convictions. She was a lifetime member of the Lincoln Falls Wesleyan Church and served for many years as secretary of the Sunday school. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Janet Heess, Shunk; daughters, Shirley Wilson, Forksville, Ella Ruth Rryan, Williamsport, Betty Lou Boxman, Sandra and Dallas Bown, Forksville, 17 grandchildren 21 great-grandchildren, numerous nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by brothers, Hiram and Chester Brown; sister, Mamie Randall and a daughter, Terry Lynne Heess. BULLOCK –HARRIET –Mrs. John C. Wyle the former Harriet Bullock died on Dec. 1, 1973 at the Columbia Hospital, Milwaukee, Wis. Born in Canton March 27, 1910 she was the daughter of the late Howard and Elnora Griffin Bullock. She was the widow of John C. Wyle, also formerly of Canton. She graduated from Canton High School and William Woods College in Missouri. She was active in her church and civic organizations. ALFRED WAYNE BUMP, 69 of 32 Watts St., Towanda died Tuesday morning, Sept. 19, 1989 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda following an extended illness. Born Dec. 15, 1919 in New Albany, he was a son of Paul O. and Blanche Capwell Bump. Mr. Bump was a veteran of World War II having served the U.S. Army stationed on Ascension Island and in the European Theater. On February 8, 1946 he married the former Lillian Wood in Towanda. He was employed by the estate of Reuder and Duvall for over 42 years until his retirement in 1987. Alfred was a lifetime member of the Franklin Steam Engine Company, Towanda and was a member of Towanda American Legion Post #42. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and making home improvements. He also enjoyed his family and grandchildren. WALTER BUMP SR. 63 of 14 North Main Street, Towanda died Sunday evening Jan. 25, 2004 at Memorial Hospital. Born March 21, 1940 in Sayre he was a son of the late Clifford E. and Lottie Heeman bump. Walter was employed by Robert Hettich Construction in Towanda for 20 years and was later employed in construction projects in the state of Maine. BESSIE M. BURGESS, 77 a resident of Bradford County Manor died Wednesday evening, Dec. 18, 1991 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda following a linger illness. She was born in Mill Plain, Conn. on Jan. 15, 1914 the daughter of the late Allen and Agnes Abel Burgess. Bessie has been a resident of Bradford County for many years and had attended the Wyalusing United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Omar. BURGESS –CARRIE E. BURGESS BORGIA, 58 of Wyalusing died Thursday evening July 22, 2004 at her home following an extended illness. Born Sept. 28, 1945 in Waverly, N.Y. she was a daughter of Paul “Pete” and Marjorie Chubb Burgess. Carrie was a graduate of Towanda High School class of 1963. She was employed by Osram Sylvania in Towanda for 29 years where she enjoyed the friendship of those with whom she worked. Carrie was greatly appreciative of all the cards and support she received from her family and friends during her illness. She loved all species of animals. She especially loved horses, owning and caring for several over the years and Siamese cats. Carrie always liked to keep her hands busy by building projects and woodcrafts, sewing, needlework and painting. BURGUESS –NELLIE E. CLARK, 69, Allentown died April 10, 1991 at Lehigh Valley Hospital Center. Mrs. Clark was born in Troy a daughter of Ira and Mary Barrett Burguess. A. LYLE BURLINGAME age 70 died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 1978 in a hospital in Tucson, Ariz. following a long illness. Born in Sayre March 20, 1908. He resided most of his life in Canton. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture as a milk sanitarian. He was a life long member of the Canton Church of Christ and most recently a member of the Green Valley Community Church in Green Valley, Ariz. He was a member of the Canton Lodge No. 415 F&AM, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Towanda, the Consistory Valley of Williamsport, the Sabbar Temple, AONMS, Ariz., the American Polled Herford Association, a life member of the Texas and Block House Fish and Game Club, Honorary member of the New York State Association of Milk and Food Sanitarians, Associate member of the National Wildlife Association. Among his survivors are his wife, Doris Preston Burlingame; a daughter, Mrs. Ann Yawney of Burlington, Vt.; a sister, Mrs. Irene Gleckner of Canton; three grandsons and two nephews. A Masonic memorial service was conducted preceding the religious service at the Green Valley Community Church, Friday, Dec. 8 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Edwin P. Sheppard officiating. ADOLPHEUS (AL) W. BURR age 70 of South Clinton, Iowa died Wednesday Jan. 13, 1982 at Jane Lamb Hospital, Clinton, Iowa. Mr. Burr was born in Canton on July 7, 1911 a son of Allen W. and Pearl McCaslin Burr. He attended Canton area schools and was a member of Canton Moose Lodge No. 429. He was a WWII veteran. Mr. Burr moved to South Clinton, Iowa in December 1958 and was formerly employed as a foreman at International Paper, Clinton, Iowa. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Fulkerson, whom he married on Aug. 15, 1936; one brother, Howard M. Burr, Phoenix, AZ; and a niece, Mrs. Sterling (Sally) Swingle of Monroeton. Funeral services were held Monday at the Clinton Memorial chapel of the Clinton Memorial Funeral Home, Clinton, Iowa. Burial was in Clinton Memorial Park Cemetery, Clinton, Iowa. RAYMOND W. BUTCHER, 78 of Bull Run Ave., Osteen, Fla. died Friday, July 8, 1994 in South Seminole Hospital, Longwood, Fla. Mr. Butcher was born Feb. 21, 1916. He was a self-employed farmer. He was born in Rutland, Pa. Mr. Butcher moved to Florida in 1965. He worked in agriculture for 24 years, from 1941 to 1965. He was a professional driver/owner/operator form 1965 to 1976. He was a member of the Moose and the Grange and was an avid bowler. He is survived by: sons, Jack Butcher, Buffalo, N.Y., Rodney D. Butcher, Osteen, Fla. and Vernon K. Butcher, Sanford, Fla.; daughters, Sharon B. Foster, Troy, Pa. and Pamela D. Wright, Sanford, Fla.; brothers, Harry, Harold and Bob Butcher, all of Pennsylvania and Bill Butcher of Deland, Fla.; sisters, Hazel Toothacher, Ruby Tanner and Mary Rusin, all of Deland, Fla., Carol Morrison, Sanford, Fla., Phyllis Houser, Harrisburg and Blanche Gregory and Lillian Chamberlin, both of Deland, Fla. He was preceded in death by; his parents, Henry Glenwright Butcher and Ruby Inez Smith; his wife Agnes B. Gates and son, Charles “Bub” Butcher in December 1966 and Roger Butcher. HARRY L. BUTTERS, 71, Williamsport, May 12, 1969 in the Coronary Care Unit of the Williamsport Hospital. Mr. Butters was born Jan. 3, 1918 in Roaring Branch a son of William and Minnie Good Butters. Mr. Butters was retired from Anchor-Darling Valve. He was a member of the Cogan Station Christian Church, a veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion Post 882 and a member of Bottle Run Grange. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, the former Leona Porter; a son, Robert D., Williamsport RD 1; a brother, Emery, Canton RD 1; a sister, Mrs. Pearl Sechrist, Liberty and two grandchildren. The funeral was held Monday at Sander’s funeral Home with Rev. Harry R. Yoder officiating. Burial was in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery, RD 2. –Canton Independent Sentinel
