1878 12-Sept. D Sofield, James M. Died—Mrs. A.J. Sofield (reports) that her son, James M. Sofield, died on Friday. The dec’d was 23 years of age and was the 2nd son of the late Capt. Alfred J. Sofield, who was killed at Gettysburg. The funeral was held at the residence of his mother on Main Street.

1878 6-Jun. D Vermelyea, Mr. H. C. Died—Horace Clark Vermilyea was born in the village of Otego, Otsego Co., N.Y., April 10, 1853, [sic] where he spent the early part of his life. In 1846 he and his family moved to Tioga boro, this Co., where he engaged in the lumber business until 1855, when he moved to Gaines, where he has resided for the last 23 years. Most of the time he has been engaged in the hotel business. Mr. V. was known by every citizen in Tioga County as “Uncle Hod,” of the Izaak Walton House. On Thursday last he was attacked with apoplexy - Tuesday, at 11:30 p.m. he sank quietly to rest. Mr. Vermilyea leaves a wife, 2 sons and 2 daughters. The funeral took place at Gaines this a.m., after which the remains will be brought to this place for interment.

1878 18-Apr. D Wilcox, Mrs. C. L. Died—Death of Mrs. C.L. Wilcox, between 4 and 5 o'clock on Monday morning she breathed her last from an apoplectic stroke. Mrs. Wilcox’s maiden name was Hannah L. Bartle. She was born in Chenango Co., N.Y., in April, 1828, and was nearly 50 years of age at the time of her death. She married Mr. Wilcox in 1863; one son was born to them, who with the husband mourns her loss. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church. The remains were brought home on Tuesday and the funeral was held at the residence on Main Street yesterday, Rev. J.F. Calkins officiating.

1878 18-Apr. D Williston, General Horace Died—The Elmira Bazoo contans the following - “General Horace Williston, of Athens, Pa., died Saturday morning, of heart disease. He was the son of the late Judge Horace Williston. He was Athen’s most prominent citizen. He leaves a wife, 2 daughters, and a son.” The sad news reached Wellsboro on Saturday. One of the daughters of the dec’d, Miss Catherine, was visiting her cousin, Miss Mazie Robinson - - General Williston was a brother of Judge L.P. Williston, his wife is a sister of Mrs. Chester Robinson.

1878 7-Mar. D Wynne, Rev. Father John Died—News was received here on Sunday that Rev. Father John Wynne of Blossburg, was dead. He was formerly of Scranton, Pa., and we understand that he was born in this Country. Six years ago he was assigned to the Blossburg parish. On Wednesday he was seized with a violent attack (hemorrhage of the lungs) which resulted in his death Sunday p.m. His remains were taken to Scranton for interment. Father Wynne was 30 years of age.
