Deerfield Cemeteries by Eugene A. SEELEY
"It was not uncommon, in rural areas, during the 19th century, to bury the dead on the homestead or in a plot.
HOWLAND Cemetery is one of these, started on land of Joseph HOWLAND. It is now, on the former Fred MERRICK farm, owned by Mrs. Ernest SMITH of Elkland, Pa.
James HOWLAND was killed in Civil Way, dying in Virginia, Feb. 5, 1864 at the age of 17. He was a member of the Second Pa. Cavalry, Co. L.
On Jan. 15, 1886, twelve members organized the G.A.R. Post no. 508, at Academy Corners. It became known as James HOWLAND Post.
Credit is due to descendants of these people and the Butler Hill Sportsman's
Club, for keeping the cemetery in presentable condition."
