Webbs Mills Cemetery

Southport, Chemung County, New York
The Webbs Mills Cemetery is located in the hamlet of Webb Mills in the southwestern part of the Town of Southport, Chemung County, New York. It is situated on an uneven hillside behind the United Methodist Church at the junction of Pennsylvania Avenue (County Highway #69) and the Rolling Acres Road. It is not a churchyard cemetery. The highway department of the Town is responsible for its maintenance, but little is done. There are large areas without stones, depressions indicate the possibility of many unmarked graves. Eight or ten broken stubs mark unknown burial sites. The grounds, still used for burials, measures about 300 feet in depth and 200 feet in width, with the whole enclosed with a wire fence. The grave markers were copied by Joseph & Boris Boyd on September 3, 4, and 6, 1976, requiring about 12 hours to record all readable inscriptions. Any data enclosed in brackets ( ) does not appear on the stones, but has been added for interest. Also, on some entries, as for wives and children, the surname has been added for clarity.
