DEUEL –JEANNE MARIE (DEUEL) HATCH, 78, of 101 Ferry St., Athens, was called by God on Sunday, June 5, 2005. As all babies are a gift from God, he called on the best provider for help. Jeanne was not only the very proud mother of five naturally-born children, she nurtured and opened her heart to several family members. Throughout the 1960s, Jeanne offered and provided a safe haven for foster children. She, independently, ran a day care from her home for more than two decades providing adoring love and safety to over 100 Valley children. All she ever asked from life was to marry a farmer and have a dozen children. Her life was full so long as she was surrounded by “her kids.” Now she will be encircled by all of God’s gifts.   Born July 24, 1926, at home, she was the daughter of the late Margaret Bernice (Murray) and James Leland Deuel. She was predominately raised by her grandparents, Minnie and William Clark, Sr., to whom she affectionately referred to as Ma and Dad. Jeanne married Norman Hatch on Nov. 29, 1947. At the time, she was raising Dorothy Jeanne Clark, the first of “her kids.” Norman and Jeanne successfully operated a series of farms for a number of years throughout the Valley and Ridgebury areas.   Jeanne is survived by: her husband of 57 years, Norman Hatch of Athens; six children, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren – Dorothy Jeanne (Clark) Embrey and her husband Wallace of Lockhart, Texas, their child Lawrence of Austin, Texas, and his children Dylan and Phoenix; Abby Lorraine Embrey-Higgenboth and her husband, Neil, their children and great-grandchildren Harper, Hayden and Colin of Bastrop, Texas; Curtis Mitchell and his wife Jeanna, their children and great-grandchildren Amanda and Christina of League City, Texas; Norman James and his wife Carol of Wellsburg, their son Michael James and his wife Jennifer and their children Landyn and Rylee of Pine City, N.Y., and their daughter Debra Ann (Hatch) Rafferty and her husband Earl and their children Brionna and Shane of Elmira; Leland Francis of Brazoria, Texas, and his daughter Heather Adell Hatch of Las Vegas, Nev.; Lyndz Rae and Lee Michael Hatch of LeRaysville, Pa.; Thomas Randall Hatch and his son Dakota Lee of Oyster Creek, Texas; Laura Yvonne (Hatch) Kelsall and her husband John of Sayre, their children Dana Yvonne Kelsall of Johnson City and Devin John Kelsall of Sayre; Barbara Jean Hatch of Corning, her child Quay Marie (Hatch) Wells and her husband Aaron and their child Caleb; Seth Edward Hatch of Corning; and Brittany Rae Hatch of Corning. She is also survived by: her sister, Dorothy (Deuel) Kulman of Sayre; nephew, Daniel Lee and his wife Roxanne of Bastrop, Texas; sisters-in-law, Jane (Elmer) Hatch of Burlington, Pa., and Lowella (Gussie) Rogers of Canistio, N.Y.; and numerous special nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and cousins.   She was predeceased by: an infant son, John Arthur Hatch; two sisters, Marsha Jane (Deuel) Skellon and Margaret (Deuel) Cocoran; great-granddaughter, Gracie Hatch; sister-in-law, Winifred (Hatch) Cole; and three brothers-in-law, Melvin Kulman, Donald Hatch and Elmer Hatch.  Family and friends may call at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home, Athens, on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Donald Anderson, pastor of the Athens First United Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial will be in the Centerville Cemetery.  –CQ News, June 6, 2005.  Contributed by Carol Brotzman.
