Joyce,
Recently I was corresponding with Matt Carl, of the LeRoy Heritage Museum
about the Bradford Co pioneer, Elizabeth OAKLEY Holcomb, who is buried
in the LeRoy Cemetery. I decided to take a look at the cemetery listing
on Tri Co Website and that's when I discovered that there had been an error
on the cemetery listing, I'm not certain that her date of birth is known
but she died in 1801. On page 2 of the LeRoy Cemetery she is listed
as born 1801 died 1932 (which are the dates on the monument that marks
her grave, but that's a memorial to her and not her tombstone). The
1932 date is when the memorial to her was placed in the cemetery and what
that reads should really be included in the reading of the cemetery because
Elizabeth was the first person buried in LeRoy Cemetery.
Thanks, Joyce, I knew you'd want to know.
Linda Mutzer
Elizabeth's monument reads:
1801 IN MEMORY OF 1932

WHO MARRIED HUGH HOLCOMB 1799 OR 1800.
FIRST WOMAN TO SETTLE IN LEROY TWP.
FIRST TO MARRY IN THE TOWNSHIP.

FIRST TO DIE, DEATH TAKING PLACE SHORTLY
AFTER THE BIRTH OF HER SON MARLIN 1801
FIRST TO BE BURIED IN LEROY CEMETERY.
THIS MEMORIAL MARKS HER GRAVE.
THE BEGINNING OF THIS CEMETERY.
SOME STONES IN THIS PILLAR ARE FROM THE
FARM OF HER HUSBAND, THE FIRST TO BE

Thank you so much for the work you have done in setting up this Website. It is truly a labor of love. I am the 5th great grandaughter of Eli Holcomb through Sterling, Harvey, Mahlon Day and Minnie Anna Holcomb. Mahlon was a Civil War soldier who survived Andersonville Prison.
I found that the cemetery listing has Sterling dying in 1830, but it
should read March 22, 1850. If someone would correct that, I would
very much appreciate it. Jan
